Empanadas are stuffed turnovers, originally from Spain and Portugal, and eaten widely across South America, including Argentina, Paraguay and also eaten in Mexico, Puerto Rico and the Phillipines too. They are a delight and delicious! This spot is an Argentinian place and I got 3 empanadas. They have many different stuffed options and I chose a beef, mushroom and spinach as my three. I asked how spicy the spicy beef one is and the very nice lady working said it was about 5/10, so I passed. She said it wad spicy, unfortunately, I cannot handle too spicy. So far, I have eaten the beef and spinach one and like them both. I was given chimichurri sauce, but I dont think I like this version, its a little too lemony for me. I like a more parsley forward chimichurri and this one too sour for me. For 3 empanadas, it was about $11, which isnt too bad! FL and baked empanadas are everywhere and usually were $1.50 each (now maybe $2.00-$2.50) so it does bug me to pay $4.00 for an empanada. Clear 5 stars! I don't understand when people give only 4 stars but don't say anything about why they took off one star. Argentinian empanadas are my absolute favorite! I strongly prefer the baked method to other styles. This is a small spot at the UTC Westfield mall. It's best to order food and then go find a place in the plaza to sit and eat. We went on a Saturday afternoon and there was no wait. Empanadas are warm and ready instantly and they have complementary sauces. The amount of VEGETARIAN/VEGAN options made me feel like a normal human being. Like is this how the meat eaters feel?? Must be nice ! So glad they have this many options! I have tried quite a bit of them and have never been disappointed. The rajas one has pretty earthy and chille flavor. It was so creamy and cheesy I could eat 5! The jackfruit one is very good too, the filling kind of reminds me of shepherd pie, I like how it's not trying to imitate a meat flavor but shines as its own flavor. Paraná used to be one of my favorite spots, but unfortunately something has changed. We recently spent about $66 on two drinks and 18 empanadas, and the experience was disappointing from start to finish. The matcha latte tasted watered down, and several of our favorite empanadas...the mushroom, rajas, and margarita were bland and lacked the flavor they used to have. These were always our go-to choices, so the difference was very noticeable. The only thing that seemed unchanged was the sauce, which is still excellent. Unfortunately, the food quality no longer matches the prices. We kept hoping each empanada would be better than the last, but that wasn't the case. Even our pup liked the pastry, my only negative was the shrimp empanada was okay, I should have stuck to my tried and trues but I was feeling adventurous, the cashier had mentioned that if I liked ginger I would like it but you could not taste the ginger and the shrimp itself was not appetizing, but that was my fault for getting that filling. I've heard San Diego has the most consistent weather anywhere. Not too hot never too cold. The same is true of Paraná. This legendary fixture in the Liberty Public Market offers some tasty empanadas, some questionable. I really enjoyed their signature salsas. To me the biggest reason to come here. My BIL explained to me that these are traditional Argentinian empanadas and as such, I have no idea what I'm talking about (respectfully). So take this with a grain of salt. I haven't much exposure to true Argentinian fare. I'm just used to these being more flaky with more filling. A must try is the Alfajores. A cookie sandwich filled with dulce de leche. We came in on a very busy Saturday evening. The market was packed. We had to wait in a short line. We ordered a dozen empanadas we had to wait 10 or 15 mins for some to come out of the oven which wasn't surprising considering how busy it was. We went and got some donuts while we waited. I loved the jackfruit, but I think I'd have to say mushrooms was my favorite. Lots of flavor in both of them and I would happily get them again. I've been walking by this spot for months and finally checked it out and was not disappointed! This is a very cute spot just a couple of blocks from Pacific Beach. I was pleasantly surprised by the space itself. From the outside it looks like a rather small shop but they have a beautiful patio out back. Despite that, they came to us hot and crispy. We got 4 empanadas, the Margherita, Raja, Malbec Beef, and Mushrooms.
