We recently hosted a large reception (around 60 people) in honor of my Cuban-born mother. The food, ambiance, and service were absolutely fabulous. Whether you're grabbing a coffee and guava pastry after a day of shopping or planning your next large event, I highly recommend Havana Grill. It's sure to taste good and be a crowd pleaser. To start, the food was amazing. The owner, Sandra, helped me plan a menu that would be satisfying and popular with all of the guests, but also within my budget. We settled on chafing dishes with arroz con pollo, frijoles negros, rice, lechón, ropa vieja, croquetas, plátanos maduros, and Cesar salad, and guests were able to add beverages, deserts, and any special dietary requests. Everything was a HIT. A week later, I'm still hearing how wonderful the food was-- even from guests with food restrictions and a relative who runs her own Cuban food business in another state! The atmosphere was perfect and the service was impeccable. Sandra, her Operations Manager (Markley), and the staff were fantastic to work with on the planning and preparation, as well as on the day of the event. The restaurant music and decor is already warm and inviting with an indoor tree, high ceilings, and a large dining area, so not much was needed to make it festive. Still, I wanted to place some photographs and memorabilia around the various tables to personalize it. The staff made it super easy to drop things off the night before, taking steps to communicate with each other and make sure nothing got lost. The next day, I arrived to see that they had set it up beautifully-- even adding flowers at each table. On the day of the event, service team (including Bree, Ramon) were attentive and friendly. We were treated like family, and it was wonderful. Havana Grill really knocked it out of the park for me and my family. I was so sad to hear that the Clairemont location had closed and had never been to this location before, but I will definitely be back. Highly recommend! read more

I was saddened to hear that their Clairemont location closed but happy to learn there is another restaurant in Mission Valley. So on a visit to San Diego, since I no longer live there, Havana Grill was on the top of my dining list. The sampler plate had everything from their appetizer menu. The Giant Papa Rellena is a sight to behold! A fried potato dumpling with delicious beef filling inside but in XXL size, it is a definite shareable for the table. Yuca fries were freshly made and perfectly tender inside with a crispy exterior. Tostones were also freshly made, tender and crispy. Ham croquettes had a good smoky ham flavor. Mariquitas and the plantains were equally well prepared. The appetizer plate came with their delicious mojo de ajo sauce for dipping. Their Lechon is still the best that I have ever had so I ordered that. It was tender, very flavorful, and came with black beans, rice, and plantains. I always order extra portions of their mojo de ajo to accompany my meal. The Lechon was, as always, very delicious. For dessert, I tried the Cuban Coffee Tres Leches cake. This was light in texture and not too sweet. The cake was soft and moist. There was a some coffee flavor but that could have been stronger for me. Nevertheless, this was a delicious ending to a very fine meal. Staff were efficient and friendly. I like the dine in format at this restaurant. The dining room is bright and airy with high ceilings. Very comfortable seating. Parking is plentiful in the adjoining lot but may be difficult depending on the time of day. read more

Really disappointing takeout experience. I ordered the El Cubano sandwich, and it was so dry. The bread had a nice crunch on the outside, which I liked, but unfortunately that was about the only good thing I can say about the sandwich. I also paid extra for the Cuban fries because the description mentioned mojo garlic sauce, but when I opened my order at home, they were literally just plain fries. So I basically paid extra for regular fries, which was pretty ridiculous. The empanadas were decent, but nothing special. Overall, the entire meal was dry, underwhelming, and definitely not worth what I paid. I was really looking forward to trying this place, but based on this experience, I definitely would not return. read more

I was craving Cuban food and went Friday 08/07/26 around 630pm it was a busy Friday evening . A man greeted us and said the front table is the only thing open and we said that was fine . He did not hand us a menu . A thin Caucasian girl passed us twice and the same person that greeted us passed us , no one checked up on us . 20 minutes later I was flagging the same waitress . We had eye contact I can tell she saw me but looked right at me and gave me the meanest dirtiest look & ignored me . We were waiting no one has come up for over 20 min . I have no plans of staying there longer and not get any service . I told the bartender that came up near our table , she said she will tell someone . Finally another male waiter came up he was nicer and took our order . The same mean thin Caucasian lady came up brought our iced tea but only brought 1 , we ordered 2 She came back and brought the second iced tea gave us the meanest stern look and plopped down the second iced tea . I said thank you and she gave me the dirtiest look . She was bizarre and weird as can be . She looks like she hates her job and there is no reason for being mean . The food was 8/10 and portions were good but the bad treatment makes it not worth it to go back . We dine to have a nice enjoyable experience and I can't see spending my money to be treated mean by the staff . I won't be coming back anytime soon . read more

This actually pains me since this was one of my favorite restaurants. I came here with a few friends. Food came out remarkably fast, especially the paella, since it had a disclaimer that it may take 15 mins to prepare. First off, I got the Chicken Pollo. This was dry :(. I also ordered my favorite, Yuca Fries, which were noticeably smaller than before, about half the size! Although they tasted the same, the amount was definitely less than before. My friends shared the paella and it was dry as well. One of friends asked the waiter, "How is the food prepared? Is it all premade and stored in a warmer?" To finish off, we got the Cuban Coffee Tres Leches cake, which super soft and moist. My friends loved this dessert. I still love the ambiance of this place as it reminds me of being on vacation. Visit July 2026: Came here with some family at their recommendation. It was still World Cup time so quite a crowd. Despite that, service was pretty quick and friendly. Typical restaurant/bar. Not that I've been to Havana but I didn't feel like I was transported anywhere exotic in terms of decor. Our family ordered a plate of empanadas to start. Great crust! I forget the exact combo but one of them was cubano and thst was my fave. Ropa Vieja. Interestingly the only time I had this dish was at Flama Llama. While Havana Grill's take had juicy braised beef, I felt there good have been more seasoning. It came white rice and black beans. I liked the beans. One daughter got the same dish and felt the same. Probably says something that we both didn't finish the beef. I kept picking at the empanadas. (Our mains came out surprisingly quick right after the empanadas). I was dissappointed that the plantains that came with it were a bit small. Vaca Frita was chosen by my other daughter. Crispy flank steak. She liked it. Didn't take a bite of hers so can't comment on taste. Arroz con pollo for my wife. Tried her chicken which was cooked well. Juicy. I stopped by mall today to get coffee and Cava. So decided to try the online ordering again and take the chance that the items would be ready when confirmed. Maybe it was a lucky day or they hear customers but today was a totally different experience. The hostess was so helpful and she was the one who went behind the counter to find my order which was already bagged and ready! I couldn't believe it and thanked her so much for her help. We came here for lunch in a great, welcoming and bright restaurant. There is plenty of close parking which is convenient. We love their awesome empanadas and their entrees like the citrus chicken. Empanadas with a side of garlic sauce is irresistible. The chicken breast was perfectly cooked and juicy. It came with sautéed onions, flavorful black beans, rice and plantains. Yum! Ever since I heard about their original clairemont location closing, I suddenly remembered about this restaurant and wanted to try it again as I had always remembered it being delicious. Although I haven't been in a long time, the quality of the food seems to remain the same from when I initially tried it years ago. We ended up trying yuca fries, their arroz con pollo and the vaca frita which were all items I don't remember ordering from my first time coming. Yuca fries: crunchy on the outside and fairly starchy on the inside which is to be expected. It was seasoned well and the mojo sauce it comes with is good but I'm not really sure if it's worth the price (it was worth a try though) Vaca Frita: I wasn't expecting this but parts of the beef were thin, charred and crispy which was a pleasant surprise. Super enjoyable and the plantains and congris it comes with are good as well (about what you expect from caramelized plantains and rice/beans). Arroz Con Pollo: this was also a surprising banger simply because I didn't expect the golden rice to be so tasty but you can definitely tell it has been stewing in all of the spices,chicken and peas/raisins imparting a delicious flavor. The chicken pieces were also moist and not dry at all. Food came out quick and service was good, no problems there. Price wise it is a little up there but for the quality of food and portion size (besides I'd say the yuca fries) I would definitely give Havana Grill a visit if you're looking for good Cuban food in San Diego! read more

I went recently to get some coffee and pastries after watching a World Cup game at the nearby Novo Brazil. Very nice decor, ample space, easy parking, all pretty...yet the Cubano coffee was too sugary, overly sweet. I understand it is sweet but in my opinion was too much and the pastry was kind of hard. I did not feel welcome to the restaurant, to be a supposedly Cuban there was no warmth and felt it was run by teenagers. Also, I didnt like to be charged extra with the excuse to pay the workers for the medical insurance. That should be at the cost of the employer not the customers who are already paying tips. It's been a few months since we've been here and from our last visit things have changed. Entree portion seems smaller. The side yuca fries were cut smaller and with fewer pieces. Sandwiches are gone from the dinner menu but you can still order them. Dinner is full service. Customer service went downhill. We came at 8pm and they couldnt sit us inside the main dining area even though there are open tables. They were reserving it for a larger group of people in case there is a rush of people 1 hour before closing time. They sat us near the entrance. Then While we're still eating about 30 before closing they are already cleaning ane lifting the chairs around us. Almost signaling us to hurry up with our dinner. I still like my Ropa Vieja but after this experience I don't think we'll come back anytime soon. read more

The food is just as good as always but their new model in service is not that great. So now you don't order at the counter and take a seat. Now you wait to be seated and they do full service. It takes a bit for them to bring you your check etc etc. Plus they don't have the sangria by the pitcher and need to do glass by glass. We wanted to sit in the main dining area but they wouldn't seat at at a table that was for more than 4 because there was only 3 of us and they were saving it for a larger group but was less than an hour before closing. Plus the lunch and dinner prices are different. And they don't have the sandwiches listed on the dinner menu and so you need to ask for them if you want one for dinner. It just seems more inconvenient and more of a hassle with the new menu and pricing etc etc. and I get the impression that ordering by the glass, Waiting to be seated waiting for the check is an excuse to charge more than they did before by attempting to making it more fancy. Idk. Could be wrong but that's the impression I got. The service was ok but I guess I just preferred the old way where you order at the counter pay and they bring the food to you and so I'm when you're done you don't have to wait and look around for a server to get your check. It's alwaysss a fun time at Havana Grill! If you're ever in the mood for some Cuban food, Havana Grill is the place to be. On the particular night we stopped by, they had a live band and dancing! It was such an upbeat crowd just enjoying the food, music, and each other's company. The Vaca Frita is my go-to! It features braised flank steak seared with onions, Spanish rice, fried plantains, and a small salad. Every element on this plate is SO GOOD! It feels really like someones mom made it for you. I thoroughly enjoyed all aspects of my lunch at Havana Grill. The restaurant is located in the outskirts of the mission valley mall and has plenty of parking and is easy to find. It is super cute, and has a fun, airy, bright feel. Service: Our server, Sydney, was great and explained a number of food items to us without even being asked. She was helpful in making good recommendations as well. Food came out fast and we were checked on often. Food: We ordered three empanadas: picadillo, yucca, Cubano with buttery mojo sauce. These empanadas were excellent! The crust was flakey and buttery and had a lot of filling. They are a pretty decent size. The pork and yucca and picadillo were my favorites that we tried. For my entree, I ordered the Ropa Vieja, which was delicious. It came with brown rice, black beans and two sweet plantains - all super tasty. First time dining. In my travels to Miami for work, Ive had some of the best Cuban around ie Versailles - authentic as it gets and the mojitos are amazing. So my comparison is to what I have had. The star of our meal was the empenadas!! Pack w filling and several different types! I would come back for these! Next was Seafood Paella and Roasted Chicken. The Paella was good in general. But it does not stand up to what Ive had recently. LOTS of rice filled the platter. More mussels than shrimp, calamari and fish. Rice heavy dish. Nothing scream cuban flavor to me but again a good Paella. The Chicken also lacked true Cuban spices/flavors. A bit overcooked, but in general was good. The Mojo sauce has a hint of Cuban spice. The plantains were great! Like a dessert, so sweet and caramelized. Guava cheese cake to end the night. The cheesecake was good but the guava seemed like it was not fresh made. Almost like they used Guava paste as a based. The food here is good. I do recommend anyone wanting Cuban food to try Havana Grill! But compared to legit Cuban food Ive had in Miami, this does not rise to those flavors. But I would have to say its the best Cuban we have in SD. I will be back to try their Cuban Sandwich. We felt bad but sent it back. All 4 of us had cold food. One of the servers made some comment that it was cause of the fans- which was absurd. This is the second location for this iconic Cuban restaurant. We were formerly regulars at the Clairemont location, which closed recently. So we decided to try Havana Grill Mission Valley and we weren't disappointed. The ambiance of this location is much better with lots more space and legitimate table service. Attractive restaurant located in the Mission Valley mall. We stopped in for a quick lunch, trying 3 different empanadas and a beer. It took a while to be served the empanadas at the 'bakery' counter and right before we paid, the server went to serve someone at the outside walk-up window. Uh, hello...?! We sat at at the bar where the service as well as the empanadas were luke warm. The bar tender was wearing one earphone and obviously taking a phone call while 'working'. It was difficult to get her attention between her prepping limes, her phone call and her disappearing every so often. We could have easily walked out and not paid for our drink, but we were honest. YES YES YES!!!! If you have not been to Havana Grill, get in the car right now. I'm serious - grab your keys and DRIVE! My family is Cuban and we have struggled some to find true authentic Cuban Food recently, but we struck absolute gold with this place. Their drinks are so wonderful - the margaritas, the Havana mojitos & the Old Cuban are top contenders. You really can't go wrong with any drink order though. I definitely have my favorites when it comes to their food items - the vaca frita (#1 oh my gosh I could eat it daily) and the fricase de pollo are so wonderful. The baked empanadas along with anything from their bakery section is going to be a win as well. Whatever you order just ask for more mojo! There is a takeout/pick up bakery/cafe counter that you can order from if you are not dining in, a bar, and inside and outside dining. The food we ordered was amazing. It's so great to have a good Cuban sit-down restaurant in San Diego! Their Cuban sandwiches are as good as the ones we get in Miami. The Crazy Cuban is my favorite. Their tostones are great. I had lunch here with some friends. It was my first time at Havana Grill. I ordered the Citrus Grilled Chicken Breast that came with sweet plantains, brown rice, and signature black beans. I thought it was just ok, the chicken was a bit on the dry side. My favorite part of the dish were the sweet plantains. I had a taste of my friend's Arroz con Pollo. This dish was more flavorful than mine. They used dark meat for this dish and the way it was cooked left the chicken very tender and full of flavor. We also tried the Cubana empanadas--not recommended. The Yuka fries were good. Overall, I enjoyed the food but felt the service was a bit off. Food was delivered to our table within a good turnaround time; however, I had to wait quite a bit for my utensils. The server miscounted and didn't have enough at the table. Service was ok, not the best. The restaurant wasn't busy when we visited, but we had to flag down other servers since ours wasn't available. She was sweet, just not very attentive. The restaurant is very clean and nicely decorated. When you walk in, there's a beautiful display of baked goods. The food wasn't bad, it was perfectly edible, but it lacked the bold, deeply seasoned flavor I expect from authentic Cuban cooking. The meat needed more juiciness & seasoning, and even the beans, rice, vegetables, and pastries tasted muted. I have been to the Havana Grill in Clairemont and was so excited to see that they had a new location in the Mission Valley mall. First, there is ample parking, the parking at the original location is a little hard to come by. I wasn't originally getting anything to eat at Havana Grill but when we saw the line at Cava, I opted to get a drink and a little snack to tide us over. I ended up getting the guava lemonade which was super refreshing especially because it's been incredibly hot lately. Then I opted for a little snack and got a lechon empenada, the dough was super flaky and flavorful and that lechon was so tender and juicy. The parts with the yuca was more mashed potato-y which was perfect with the lechon. Not sure if they offer sauces but I definitely wanted to douse it in some sort of sauce. I ordered from the outside, so I didn't have to go into the restaurant itself but the inside from looking in was beautiful. If you're at Mission Valley I would highly recommend checking them out, for either a full meal or a light snack! read more

"I've been wanting to try Havana Grill for ages, so I finally made it there yesterday--and wow, it delivered one of the best meals I've ever had! I started with the Vaca Frita, their signature crispy fried flank steak. It's braised flank steak seared super crispy with sautéed onions and mojo sauce, served with rice, sweet plantains, and I added a side of beans that paired perfectly. The meat had this amazing texture--like burnt ends but even better--mixed with garlic butter (or that garlicky mojo vibe), so flavorful and crispy in every bite. Then I sampled the Havana Chicken Sandwich: a crispy bun loaded with chicken breast, caramelized onions, cilantro, and garlic aioli--basically a lighter, chicken twist on the classic Cuban sandwich, and it was spot-on. I also tried the Havana Royale Burger (or whatever that tasty burger is called on the menu), which came with this incredible house-made sauce I couldn't quite place--maybe that signature guava aioli?--but it was so addictive I couldn't stop eating it. Finally, the Arroz con Pollo was a standout classic: tender hormone-free chicken with rice, peas, red peppers, and spices in a rich, saucy broth that made it way more flavorful than your average chicken-and-rice dish at other Latin spots. What went well? Everything! The restaurant was beautiful...a clean outdoor vide without being out doors...bright and festive, trumpet based music over the speakers (not loud just right). Our server Jake, knew the menu backwards and forwards and had a detailed explanation of everything which I needed not being Cuban or having visited many Cuban restaurants. My colleague who suggested we visit this restaurant is Cuban and was impressed with everything from the ham croquettes and yuca fries to the Lechon congris to the "materva", a soda from his childhood, to the mojito...he loved it all, high praise coming from someone who was born and raised in Cuba! For me the restaurant offered more than just great food but also a kind of experience...love it all and when I return to San Diego, I'll remember this restaurant. read more

The Osso Buco Encendido (Beef Shank) was served with grass-fed Beef Shank which was slowly braised in wine , and spices and garnished with red and green bell peppers!!
