YES YES YES!!!! If you have not been to Havana Grill, get in the car right now. I'm serious - grab your keys and DRIVE! My family is Cuban and we have struggled some to find true authentic Cuban Food recently, but we struck absolute gold with this place. Their drinks are so wonderful - the margaritas, the Havana mojitos & the Old Cuban are top contenders. You really can't go wrong with any drink order though. I definitely have my favorites when it comes to their food items - the vaca frita (#1 oh my gosh I could eat it daily) and the fricase de pollo are so wonderful. The baked empanadas along with anything from their bakery section is going to be a win as well. Whatever you order just ask for more mojo! We have been fans of HG since they first opened in Clairemont. Over the years, service wasn't as friendly and the prices became so high (not including their mandated service charge on top of tip). I was going to be working in area and decided to place an online order (before noon) for some of their pastries for a 1:15p pickup. Ordering and payment was easy online (their app was down). Parking was pretty bad Fri July 3 at the Mission Valley Mall. Understandable as the revamped mall is really quite nice and welcoming. HG is located by Cava and Mendocino Farms. The restaurant itself is so pretty with full service if you eat there. The bar had several tvs playing the World Cup game. It wasn't too busy that Friday afternoon but still a decent amount of customers. There's a cashier area next to the pastry display. The girl working wasn't busy and seemed disinterested when I told her I was there just for an online pick up. I noticed there were plenty of pastries in the showcase that she could have just packaged up for me . She looked at her screen and said it wasn't there so she had to ask kitchen. She came back and said it wasn't ready. No other explanation was offered. I assumed maybe they were making a fresh batch of their guava pastries so ok, no worries, a few min more would be ok. It was past 1:15p at this point. So i walked to get coffee nearby. When I came back around 140p, the same girl was there and never acknowledged me. I was trying to make eye contact with her as I didn't want to bother her but it was apparent she had forgotten the order. I asked another server for help and he spoke to her. She finally just grabbed a box and packaged up the pastries that were sitting in display case THE ENTIRE TIME. No apologies just an excuse how it didn't show up on her screen. I get it sucks to work on July 3. I did too but gosh, attitude can go a long way you know? What should have been a two min transaction turned into a 30 min ordeal where I lost time trying to rush home with fresh pastries. The guava pastries were good just not crispy or warm as they were probably made at opening. The filling was still delicious and comforting. I do hope this place succeeds as their Clairemont location seems to be permanently closed now :( read more

First time dining. In my travels to Miami for work, Ive had some of the best Cuban around ie Versailles - authentic as it gets and the mojitos are amazing. So my comparison is to what I have had. First off, the ambience is great. Greenery open air and lots of natural light! The service was great also. Servers are attentive and food comes out fairly quick! The star of our meal was the empenadas!! Pack w filling and several different types! I would come back for these! Next was Seafood Paella and Roasted Chicken. The Paella was good in general. But it does not stand up to what Ive had recently. LOTS of rice filled the platter. More mussels than shrimp, calamari and fish. Rice heavy dish. Nothing scream cuban flavor to me but again a good Paella. The Chicken also lacked true Cuban spices/flavors. A bit overcooked, but in general was good. The Mojo sauce has a hint of Cuban spice. The plantains were great! Like a dessert, so sweet and caramelized. Guava cheese cake to end the night. The cheesecake was good but the guava seemed like it was not fresh made. Almost like they used Guava paste as a based. The food here is good. I do recommend anyone wanting Cuban food to try Havana Grill! But compared to legit Cuban food Ive had in Miami, this does not rise to those flavors. But I would have to say its the best Cuban we have in SD. I will be back to try their Cuban Sandwich. It took a while to be served the empanadas at the 'bakery' counter and right before we paid, the server went to serve someone at the outside walk-up window. Uh, hello...?! We sat at at the bar where the service as well as the empanadas were luke warm. The bar tender was wearing one earphone and obviously taking a phone call while 'working'. It was difficult to get her attention between her prepping limes, her phone call and her disappearing every so often. We could have easily walked out and not paid for our drink, but we were honest. This is the second location for this iconic Cuban restaurant. We were formerly regulars at the Clairemont location, which closed recently. So we decided to try Havana Grill Mission Valley and we weren't disappointed. The ambiance of this location is much better with lots more space and legitimate table service. Sandwiches are gone from the dinner menu but you can still order them. Dinner is full service. Customer service went downhill. We came at 8pm and they couldnt sit us inside the main dining area even though there are open tables. They were reserving it for a larger group of people in case there is a rush of people 1 hour before closing time. They sat us near the entrance. Then While we're still eating about 30 before closing they are already cleaning ane lifting the chairs around us. Almost signaling us to hurry up with our dinner. I still like my Ropa Vieja but after this experience I don't think we'll come back anytime soon. read more

The food is just as good as always but their new model in service is not that great. So now you don't order at the counter and take a seat. Now you wait to be seated and they do full service. It takes a bit for them to bring you your check etc etc. Plus they don't have the sangria by the pitcher and need to do glass by glass. We wanted to sit in the main dining area but they wouldn't seat at at a table that was for more than 4 because there was only 3 of us and they were saving it for a larger group but was less than an hour before closing. Plus the lunch and dinner prices are different. And they don't have the sandwiches listed on the dinner menu and so you need to ask for them if you want one for dinner. It just seems more inconvenient and more of a hassle with the new menu and pricing etc etc. and I get the impression that ordering by the glass, Waiting to be seated waiting for the check is an excuse to charge more than they did before by attempting to making it more fancy. Idk. Could be wrong but that's the impression I got. The service was ok but I guess I just preferred the old way where you order at the counter pay and they bring the food to you and so I'm when you're done you don't have to wait and look around for a server to get your check. I have been to the Havana Grill in Clairemont and was so excited to see that they had a new location in the Mission Valley mall. First, there is ample parking, the parking at the original location is a little hard to come by. I wasn't originally getting anything to eat at Havana Grill but when we saw the line at Cava, I opted to get a drink and a little snack to tide us over. I ended up getting the guava lemonade which was super refreshing especially because it's been incredibly hot lately. Then I opted for a little snack and got a lechon empenada, the dough was super flaky and flavorful and that lechon was so tender and juicy. The parts with the yuca was more mashed potato-y which was perfect with the lechon. Not sure if they offer sauces but I definitely wanted to douse it in some sort of sauce. I ordered from the outside, so I didn't have to go into the restaurant itself but the inside from looking in was beautiful. If you're at Mission Valley I would highly recommend checking them out, for either a full meal or a light snack! read more

I had lunch here with some friends. It was my first time at Havana Grill. I ordered the Citrus Grilled Chicken Breast that came with sweet plantains, brown rice, and signature black beans. I thought it was just ok, the chicken was a bit on the dry side. My favorite part of the dish were the sweet plantains. I had a taste of my friend's Arroz con Pollo. This dish was more flavorful than mine. They used dark meat for this dish and the way it was cooked left the chicken very tender and full of flavor. We also tried the Cubana empanadas--not recommended. The Yuka fries were good. Overall, I enjoyed the food but felt the service was a bit off. Food was delivered to our table within a good turnaround time; however, I had to wait quite a bit for my utensils. The server miscounted and didn't have enough at the table. Service was ok, not the best. The restaurant wasn't busy when we visited, but we had to flag down other servers since ours wasn't available. She was sweet, just not very attentive. "I've been wanting to try Havana Grill for ages, so I finally made it there yesterday--and wow, it delivered one of the best meals I've ever had! I started with the Vaca Frita, their signature crispy fried flank steak. What went well? Everything! The restaurant was beautiful...a clean outdoor vide without being out doors...bright and festive, trumpet based music over the speakers (not loud just right). Our server Jake, knew the menu backwards and forwards and had a detailed explanation of everything which I needed not being Cuban or having visited many Cuban restaurants. My colleague who suggested we visit this restaurant is Cuban and was impressed with everything from the ham croquettes and yuca fries to the Lechon congris to the "materva", a soda from his childhood, to the mojito...he loved it all, high praise coming from someone who was born and raised in Cuba! We arrived as a group of 8 and were told we could not be seated because the kitchen "needed a break." At the same time, the restaurant was seating other guests in smaller groups without issue. We were then asked to wait 90 minutes for a table, despite visible availability. When I asked to speak with a manager, I was told there was no manager available and was instead given a name and told to call and speak with Alex Cervera later. As a result, we were effectively discouraged from dining at their site which felt like poor operational planning rather than a customer-friendly approach to handling larger parties. After having a negative experience at another nearby restaurant, my group and I recently walked over to Havana and had a great experience! I personally had never been there before, but had walked by a million times and was recommended by coworkers. The venue itself was very pretty and aesthetically pleasing - Clean, warm, and welcoming! We were immediately greeted and sat by Sandy, who ended up being our waitress. At first, I admittedly felt bad for Sandy. My group is notorious for not being "easy" and although we don't flaunt it, we don't shy away either ha! My friends are loud, obnoxious, and impatient - and they know it Ha! Well, cudos to this server and staff. Sandy handled us perfectly and what was suppose to be a quick dinner, lasted well over 3 hours enjoying our time. My friend took me here for lunch on a weekend and we had a great time. There was plenty of parking at the busy Mission Valley Mall. This place is beautifully decorated inside. One of my favorite spots but lately I'm not so sure. They've been removing some of my favorite dishes from their menu. Mostly their beef dishes (Oxtail, Osso Buca). We came on a Sunday about 3 PM. There was nine of us, but we were seated quickly because the restaurant wasn't very filled. We must've asked three times for an additional glass for water before we got it. Also, when the water ran out both bottles were never refilled. I believe they were very either understaffed or taking long breaks. My order was simple or so I thought. Three empanadas for $15 and a side of Cuban fries. I got the order of fries and one empanada with everyone else. But by the time the other two empanadas came, I finished all my fries waiting for my two empanadas. There were two of us that ordered them and had to take them to go because the group was all done with their meals. We kept asking for them, and the server said that they were still making them, but not sure if that's actually what was happening or they have forgotten our empanada orders. The server was apologetic and offered me sauces for my empanadas to go, which I didn't know there were sauces. I accepted them, but then they never came and I wasn't gonna keep waiting for them. The server was nice and apologetic but I felt should have compensated us. When my bill came they added 18% tip because I was part of a party of 8. Multiple people in our party tried it and immediately said we should tell the waiter. We did that and the new steak did not come out till literally the rest of the group were done eating and we had to check in with our waiter multiple times. Near the end of our meal we realized our water cups all had sediment at the bottom. Not a little. A LOT. Upon checking with our waiter, the owner came up and pretty much gaslighted us. It felt like she didn't believe us that we didn't add the sentiment ourselves. She offered us fresh water which at that point we didn't believe wouldn't have the same issue. We also mentioned the issue with the steak and her comment was pretty much like ... Well did you get the new steak? At which point we told her it took forever for that to even come out and be addressed and she didn't seem to care. Treated my friend to dinner for her Birthday. She had a Cuban stepfather and loves Cuban food. Her favorite dish is Rabo Encendido. I told Her Havana has the best Rabo and that she would love it. I have been to Havana Grill about 3 times and each time I have ordered a different item. WE were disappointed it is currently not on the menu. I guess it's seasonal or something. So I ordered the half chicken plate and it was very tasty just a little to dry for my liking. I took home because portion was a large and I could not even eat half. So I shared with my Hubby at home. MY sides were brown rice and black beans. I am not a fan of black beans but the black beans here are so tasty and good flavor. More like 3.5 but I'll round up... let me explain Atmosphere was great! Food was flavorful and service was okay. When we arrived, there was a woman with a child and the hostess left to figure out a high chair situation. When she got back, she basically asked the woman how do you plan on seating the child. It was weird, why didn't you grab the high chair? Regardless, the child sat in moms lap. We didn't get water until we asked which was towards the end of the meal. Expect food to come out within minutes of ordering. Definitely a dine and dash. Lastly, we paid half with gift card, the server made sure to point out the suggested tip was based off amount after gift card. It was just an awkward situation.
