I mainly do…read moreweightlifting there, and since there's over 10 racks there, I've never had an issue finding a spot to lift. During the middle of the day, it's fairly empty, so there's maybe only 1-3 other people there during off-peak hours. Even in peak times, I see everyone working in with each other without any hassle. Desmond recently gave the place a really nice renovation with some new racks, so it's looking good there. Even before then, the gym's got all the equipment I need to get my workout done and then some. I always feel welcome here, and Desmond greets me by name anytime he sees me come in. If you just want to lift and don't need classes/training, the $20/mo is absolutely a great deal.

I originally bought my membership for hot yoga, but stayed really for the Sparta/circuit classes because I do not have the equipments at home and I'm more motivated when working out as a group vs solo at the gym. It is the hottest yoga room I been to. Do wish them could turn the heat down a bit. In terms of yoga classes, they offer diff types of classes, which I'm glad they did. Ex topaz focuses more foundation while black opal is more yoga like. I like that because sometimes I just want to do easy stretches. I am on the student memberships, which is about 90$ per month and I think it's worth it you work out at least 2-3 times a week. If you are not unsure about this place and doesn't want to spend that much money for a membership, you can always buy the $30/month as a new member to try it out.

There are free classes at my school, but I feel like you need a certain level of understanding of the poses before going to those classes. I'm the kind of person that would feel VERY uncomfortable mimicking the poses in class without learning the ABCs first, just for the sake of feeling sore afterwards. I'm also uncomfortable when the teachers talk way too much about their spiritual journey. I respect other people's spirituality, but when it's hovering over the ENTIRE CLASS, it can be very distracting. Paul Sobin solves both of my problem. In the class we would move from pose to pose, but he'd always mention the mistakes easily made. So when I'm doing the pose, even when he's not nearby to correct me, I could still keep in mind what to avoid. He offers a sweet mix of the physical and spiritual practice. For example when we start the slow breathing at the beginning of class, he'd mention how life is always busy and stressful, and it's good to take just a couple minutes to breathe slow and deep to give yourself a bit peace of mind. I really appreciate this. The series are pretty flexible - if you can't make it to the class you signed up for, you can do a make-up with any other series class Paul/ Sommer teach. Whatever leftover classes you haven't used in this series can be carried over to the next one. Students get a discount, which comes to $10 per class. This is quite an investment compared to the free gym, but I'd be happy to skip a weekend drink for this. People seem very nice, chill, and friendly as well. They also offer a week of classes free before the start of the series. The only con I can think of so far: The class can be crowded, to the point that the distance between you and the next mat is half a mat's width. Come 10 mins early to secure a good spot.

(btw they have 2 Amys... the owner - who also has great classes, but I mainly workout with the other Amy who does private sessions and semi-privates Mondays around noon). The work out is properly tailored to challenge and strengthen. I love going here and only wish I'd started sooner. Working around my busy schedule has never been a problem. The owner is always present either training or leading a class, she hires the best trained/educated staff. She asked thorough questions to match me to the right trainer. I've never been so happy to exercise or enjoyed it so much. My background includes ballet, gymnastics (floor, balance beam and parallel bars) and tap dance. I've always been active either speed walking or swimming. Working with equipment is new to me and intimidating, no fear here the training is well supervised.

Let me start by saying I am not a regular participant in yoga classes. I decided to try out their…read moreprenatal yoga class when I no longer could comfortably participate in my other workouts like spin classes. I was just beginning my third trimester when I attended a prenatal class, and it was really challenging for me. Some of the poses we were in were pretty much impossible for me because of how swollen my legs were or how heavy my stomach felt. I had to do a lot of modifications. The instructor did come over a few times and assisted with providing alternative poses/stretches, but I felt pretty discouraged since I seemed to be the only one in the room unable to do a lot. I do want to note that I was one of the furthest along in this class, and many of the others were still in various stages of their first and second trimesters. One thing I did find different about this yoga class was that there was no background music, and it was hard for me to drown out the other class going on in the room next door and the traffic on the street outside. Yoga classes I have taken at other places had some very light, soothing background music. I had purchased the deal for new student special for unlimited classes for 21 days, but unfortunately did not return because it just seemed to be too much for my body. I think this may have been different if I was a person that regularly attended yoga classes...

Since Nov., 2011, I have attended Betsy Templeton's yoga class at the Wholistic Health Studio…read more Previously, I was a yoga student at a local women's club for about 8 years in an excellent experience that established much of my knowledge about proper execution of yoga postures. After the club closed, a few years passed wherein I intermittently (for various reasons mostly due to my too busy schedule) participated at several good studios, and irregularly practiced yoga on my own, until I heard about the class at WHS. Betsy's class has been wonderful. She is knowledgeable about body mechanics and is an expert at making certain that each person in the class is doing the poses, breathing, etc. correctly at each stage of the session. She "pushes you hard" to NOT push beyond your capacity or your level of ability in a way that avoids injury and overstretching. This part of her practice is an important asset that is often underemphasized in yoga. My only complaint in this aspect of this class is that occasionally, the class has been too cautious about adding skill that would stretch you farther because some in the class are "not there yet", but in opposition to this complaint, Betsy encourages and gives each individual instruction and space to move farther, as you need and desire, beyond the demand of each posture. Additionally, Betsy's instruction in how to execute various poses has been beyond any I have had in other classes. She excels in her knowledge of proper form and in teaching that aspect. Perhaps my favorite aspect of her class is her emphasis on the meditative attitude she encourages you to employ as you undertake your practice and to carry out beyond the class space into your regular life. Speaking of space, the class space at the WHS is beautiful and extremely conducive to the meditative qualities hoped for in a yoga practice.

After a couple visits with Stewart I was virtually pain free. After just a couple sessions with staff learning to stretch properly I was in great shape and pain free. I was amazed. Since then I am able to work and zumba 4 classes a week, garden ,run. After injuring my shoulder Stewart and Melanie helped me rehab and strenghthen my upper body. Most recently I trained with Melanie to do a 5 k mud run and obstacle course for the second year. I was stronger and better by 7 minutes. Stewart and Melanie are totally my heros!!!
