The Doomed Valentine's Day Special was a great choice for a first-timer at this event. It was…read morenonstop fun, from beginning to end, lots of impressive moments, and plenty of comedy in unconventional ways. The personalities on stage did not disappoint this past Friday at the DNA Lounge in SF. The doors opened one hour before the listed showtime, with a small line that went quickly, and I was a able to snag one of the few non-reserved seats on the floor (reserved seating costs extra). There were just a few of these folding chairs in the back row of the main seating area and a couple booths on both sides of the venue. A few standing tables between the seating area and bar in the back. And bar height stools lining the balcony upstairs. Great music played in the background before the show, songs from the 70's, 80's, and 90's fitting for the event, including If It Isn't Love, Take My Breath Away, Baby Come Back, and You Make My Dreams Come True. The show started on time with some contests for audience members, one related to guessing song lyrics and the other with participants performing fake orgasms on stage. The main stars of the show consisted of two parts that I believe are equally deserving of praise, the performances by the house band as well as the actual storytellers. Readings of secret diary entries and aol conversations, talks of being half fingered, and fantastical hilarious drawings of teenage love (borderline stalker-ish thoughts illustrated on paper) with great commentary to go along with it. And that's just the half of it. I seriously could not stop laughing. The improv house band (D-Minus Kids) were comical and remarkably talented! Beatboxing, looping, rapping, the sounds of the keyboard and vocals... they did it all, improvised on the spot, following the performers' readings of old journal entries or stories written about their naive romantic pursuits and experiences. The band poked fun at each performer in between each act, through funky tunes and clever lyrics, and I just couldn't get enough! Can't believe it took me this long to finally check out this event... makes me reminisce about my own old journals and creations, stuff that would definitely be mortifying if I wasn't choking on laughter looking back at it today. Needless to say, I highly recommend this show!

For entry, a woman checked our names off a list then we walked down the flight of stairs that had prohibition era decor. The venue is intimate. Seating is extremely tight (definitely seats less than 100 people). I would suggest that if you go, do NOT sit up front for obvious reasons (like being the subject matter and/or ridiculed), but also because those in front rows were literally spit on (unintentionally of course) by the headliner that raised his voice/yelled as part of his skit - from the side view where we sat and because of the spotlights, we seriously saw the spit travel through the air, land on people who then retracted a bit in shock - we were disgusted, especially in this post-COVID pandemic climate. One of the other comedians stopped his skit and reprimanded those in the audience that were talking - he was so annoyed and wasn't shy about it. We parked in the parking garage across the street, $20 for less than 2 hours wasn't exactly worth it. I wouldn't be against returning as long as there are funny, well known comedians scheduled and marketed - but we won't sit up front :)

If you like to hear others' stories or enjoy sharing your own, this is the event for you. Because it was part of SF Sketchfest this past Saturday, there were a lot of comedic elements integrated into the material, on the theme of travel. But they do different themes on different nights, and can evoke all kinds of emotions from storytellers and audience members (some of the storytellers ARE audience members), so there's lots of room for creativity and expecting the unexpected.

After the workshop we went out for a team dinner and everyone shared their favorite game and we decided to do one of the activities on our own over dinner! Vivek was great to work with, communicative, and friendly and asked all the right questions. The goal for our workshop was to have fun and all leave knowing each other a little better. We had 2 new team members joining us and they both shared what a great time they had and how it was such a helpful intro to the team. Highly recommend Speechless and Vivek!

In a perfect mash-up of event and venue, Twisted Cabaret is currently being staged at Chinatown's long-shuttered, seedily hip, one-time airer of un-subtitled Bruce Lee films, the Great Star Theatre. Best ticket deals are through Goldstar.com where, for $16 apiece (including Goldstar fees), a laissez faire seating policy allows one to "sit anywhere except the first 4 rows". Watch the show and breathe a sigh of relief; seating within the first four rows might land you onstage, an unwitting participant in some humbling (and hysterical) part of the stage show. Alcoholic drinks are available for purchase in the theatre as is popcorn and cotton candy with a glow-stick center. The show is adult oriented but there's nothing there that wouldn't slay a teen or make you too uncomfortable if you were were sitting beside your own teenage offspring. Laughter is indeed the best medicine and laugh you will. The alcohol greases the wheels, so to speak. As a friend put it "I'm not sure I would've liked it as well without having drank first". So party on. Still not convinced? There's a tongue act. I rest my case.

Last night's performance of La Cage aux Folles at Theater Rhinoceros was absolutely fabulous. Every cast member delivered such wonderful acting, and may I say, the blending and harmony of everyone's voices was truly beautiful. The energy, talent, and chemistry on stage made for an unforgettable show.it was a fabulous acting from everyone. and may I say, blending of everyone's voices was great. Vibe was great. Audience was engaged. I loved that the cast had interacted with the audience. Space is tiny! If they will expand in the future, a bugger stage would be great so first row won't get on their way. Parking is street parking and limited. This theater is tucked in the center if Castro, so give yourself time to hunt for parking.
