Generally I'm only in this area if I'm coming back from town and I can't be bothered to walk home from the station nearest to my house. I'll splash out on a cab from here instead (it's my little £5 luxury every now and again). The farmers market is right next to Blackheath station in the car park. The usual suspects are here. So the fresh fruit and veg, the organic sausages. All the typical stuff. But then there's the bakers and cupcakeries and I think that's where the place comes into its own. They're lovely. The stuff they sell is great, and it's fun to walk around. You wouldn't spend more than an hour here, but if you're in the area, it's a good place to drop into before strolling to Greenwich for Sunday lunch.

It is family run and they are always every so friendly and welcoming. They are such a popular PYO farm that they even have coach loads of people come along to PYO. When there is no fruit / veg to pick in winter they have boot fairs. However all year round they do have a small farm shop / hut that you can buy produce from such as veg, honey, eggs, cream etc.

So so for example, you won't get meats like Game from March to mid August or English tomatoes in mid December. What you will get is 'just-picked' fruit and veg super fresh from the farm and according to season. The bread is made locally from organic ingredients where possible. Cakes are also locally made and delicious. Little of the food is imported (with the exception of the chocolate that graces some of the cakes I guess!) so food miles are low and quality high. Stall holders are friendly and knowledgeable, happy to provide samples and offer tips on dishes and ingredient combinations that make for perfect meals. The farmer's market's take place every third Saturday of the month; most recently on 16th August 2008. Get down there between 10 am and 3pm. UPDATE 22/07/09 A fish stall now regularly makes the trek from Essex (Maldon) which just about completes the loveliness of it all. It was the latter for me, and I couldn't feel luckier to have found such a gem. Since that day I've learned that all that fruit and veg and cheese and meat and yummmmmm that I was drooling over all comes from within 100 miles and is sold (and transported) by the growers themselves. How legit is that? Oh, and it's the first farmers' market in the UK to offer only organic and biodynamic produce? I love you. (Oh Portland, you crunchy little city, you -- you're just borrowing ideas from everyone now aren't you?)

At first glance it looks crap, but give it a go if you are nearby (having said that, I wouldn't make a trip over here JUST for this -- I like it because its near home and I can take my dog). Though this market runs Monday-Saturday, it is most busy on Saturdays and has the most stalls then. This is when I typically choose to go, as I have more time and there are more stands there to make it worthwhile. I usually grab a coffee at Barrel Boulangerie and make my way through... There seems to be very little cohesion -- but for the most part it includes: food stands, fruit/veg stands, some flowers, antiques (mostly junk, however), random furniture, many stalls selling cheap women's clothing, underwear, household goods, cheap shit, shoes, etc. However, the standouts: *An organic meat/egg stall right near the small park. Wonderful farm fresh eggs, bacon, cuts of meat, sausages of all varieties, whole roasting chickens, and more. We always make a stop here and pick up meat and eggs we can feel very good about! The people that run it are very nice, too. *Fruit/veg stall -- we like the guy that works here, too. Always making deals to offload his stuff, and to our benefit most of the time. *Women's clothing - there are a few stands that have overstock lots from Topshop (someone just commented on a top I got here and were so fascinated that I bought it at Hoxton Market!) -- the tags are usually cut out but you can tell that its from Topshop or M&S, etc. Not always great stuff, but sometimes a diamond in the rough. Worth looking about. *Household goods - if you need toilet paper, hand towels, small odds and ends, you will likely be able to find it on the cheap here. That's all -- again, it's not a destination type market like others around London but if you live in the area or are nearby its not a bad stop. Its not huge, so you can get through it quickly, its not crowded and the traders are quite mellow. Overall enjoyable.

'New York - Paris - Globe Town' written on the side of the stalls. Fruit and veg, fresh, abundant and affordable. It ain't organic but it tastes a darn sight better than so much of the supermarket grot. And then there is the fish stall which today had copious amount of fish roe perfect for making that home made taramasalata or for the less able like myself, undyed smoked haddock for a soothing chowder. And you'll never fail in having a satisfying conversation about the weather. We Brits love to talk weather. A little gem.

My favourite is 'Mike & Ollie' which is a street food stall that serves excellent high quality food at affordable prices. The people there are very friendly and it is becoming one of the best spots in London to buy great quality, affordable local produce. Mother Flipper has one of the best burgers in the London area and is a must for anyone who thinks they have already found their best burger, think again! I would definitely recommend Brockley Market to anyone who lives in the Brockley Area or around as it has everything for everyone! Perfect!
