They only accept cash so bring plenty or face a ~£2 surcharge at the only near by cash machine in Londis. After eating be sure to wonder around the vast gardens of Alexandra palace and grab a cake at the garden centre nearby. This is my favourite nearby place to bring my dog for walks.

And if you get hungry while browsing you can grab a little pie to eat there and then - I enjoyed my butternut squash & spinach, and my hubby devoured his chilli beef & cheddar before I could even snaffle some. If pie isn't your thing, there was also curries, toasted sarnies and all other sorts of goodies. So so for example, you won't get meats like Game from March to mid August or English tomatoes in mid December. What you will get is 'just-picked' fruit and veg super fresh from the farm and according to season. The bread is made locally from organic ingredients where possible. Cakes are also locally made and delicious. Little of the food is imported (with the exception of the chocolate that graces some of the cakes I guess!) so food miles are low and quality high. Stall holders are friendly and knowledgeable, happy to provide samples and offer tips on dishes and ingredient combinations that make for perfect meals. The farmer's market's take place every third Saturday of the month; most recently on 16th August 2008. Get down there between 10 am and 3pm. UPDATE 22/07/09 A fish stall now regularly makes the trek from Essex (Maldon) which just about completes the loveliness of it all. There is also an excellent stall selling marinated olives, marinated garlic (which is delicious BTW), artichoke hearts and more.

Generally I'm only in this area if I'm coming back from town and I can't be bothered to walk home from the station nearest to my house. I'll splash out on a cab from here instead (it's my little £5 luxury every now and again). The farmers market is right next to Blackheath station in the car park. The usual suspects are here. So the fresh fruit and veg, the organic sausages. All the typical stuff. But then there's the bakers and cupcakeries and I think that's where the place comes into its own. They're lovely. The stuff they sell is great, and it's fun to walk around. You wouldn't spend more than an hour here, but if you're in the area, it's a good place to drop into before strolling to Greenwich for Sunday lunch.

As one might expect from a market that takes place in a school playground it is pretty small affair. It is exclusively a food market. There are around 12 stalls selling meat, cheese, fish, vegetables and juices. In contrast to other markets there is little food to eat as you walk (pies etc.) so best to visit for staples if you live in the area. There are a good selection of quality items; the juices are particularly good. This farmer's market isn't spectacular but nonetheless sells good stuff and worth visiting if you're a local.

Fifth time visitor from the US to London and first time in the Hackney area! It feels very much…read morelike a hip/up and coming area, which celebrates inclusivity. The market itself is wonderful! Even midday on the weekend, it was much less busy than some of the more popular/tourist markets in London. The food!! So much variety with interesting local and international flavors. Really something for everyone. And the wares were actually good and shoppable. I really liked the colors and quality of the clothing, pottery, accessories etc that I was seeing. Sometimes I feel like market wares are kind of just souvenir-ish or cheaper looking, but this is stuff I would actually shop and buy because I really like it, not just for the novelty of shopping a market. The streets along the market are adorned with cute cafes and shops as well. Dog friendly, bike friendly. And a fun little canal walk nearby. In terms of getting here from Central London - I found the most convenient way to get here was via city bus, and navigating that was super easy. I just found the best bus number and route via Google Maps (though I know there's a more accurate city app of some sort), and you can tap to pay when you board using credit card, Apple Pay etc. I boarded at London Bridge so there were a ton of people, but the tip if you're at a bus stop alone is to make sure to stick an arm out to indicate to the bus driver that you want to board so they stop. Then before getting to your stop, there's a "stop" button you can push from your seat to indicate you want the bus to stop so you can get off. And then just walk off. Easy!

It was the latter for me, and I couldn't feel luckier to have found such a gem. Since that day I've learned that all that fruit and veg and cheese and meat and yummmmmm that I was drooling over all comes from within 100 miles and is sold (and transported) by the growers themselves. How legit is that? Oh, and it's the first farmers' market in the UK to offer only organic and biodynamic produce? I love you. The only downsides are that like any smaller seller the occasional fruit may be bad (though I did get a mouldy pepper from Tesco yesterday), the stock a little variable, and that they shut on most days before I get home meaning I have to go at the weekend.

The tricky part about this Farmers Market is that its location switches depending on whether or not there's something going on at the convention centre within Alexandra Palace: if that is the case, the parking lot - where the market typically takes place - is used for its intended purpose and the Farmers Market will be relocated to a nearby school yard. My tip: I usually never know where it will be, but I'm just following the string of people with shopping bags...

Speaking of birds, I'm a sucker for free range eggs from chickens that roam around in fields. One of the vendors sells "ugly eggs," those with flaws in the shells for 80p a half dozen. Vendors who sell things grown and made locally can have a stall every week, others are only allowed to sell their wares once a month.
