We had a wonderful visit here today. We came at the end of the day, but our docent Joe gave us a personal tour and I learned so many things about the Shakers that were new to me, and I've been to other communities and read much. This was a trip highlight!!

Just minutes off the highway, conveniently located. The Woods Lodge offers plenty of comfortable seating options to enjoy the deck, indoor dining area or outdoors. We had a beautiful catered grazing table that was not only impressive but delicious, cozy rustic bar and other amenities. A must see!

Elegant and Delicious!…read more Gather- The Woods new fresh al fresco venue is a delightful and unique offering for gourmet dinning in Central Vermont. Nestled in the grounds of the lovely retreat, Gather offers a small but well refined menu. Located outdoors, lawn-side candlelit tables ring 2 fire pits. These have comfy chairs for enjoying a pre-dinner cocktail. The atmosphere is classy and casual with friendly hosts and severs who take time to answer menu questions and be sure you have what you would like. With a full bar, vast wine and beer list featuring local selections, and a variety of non-alcoholic beverage options, there is something for everyone. Our meal began with a flavor packed broth soup, featuring lemon, parsley, chicken and rice. The hearty portion was perfect for 3 to share. Next came the salads: baby greens with pickled onions and homemade vinaigrette, and rubbed kale with cranberries and nuts. Delicious! The swordfish main is crafted with an amazing balance of sweet blueberry sauce and a touch of cayenne to make the flavors pop. The chicken dish featured a tasty glaze and features grilled lemon, a surprise twist. Both mains were served with a veggie side and atop smashed potatoes- creamy and flavorful, and with lots of texture. Dinner was capped by the featured dessert, blueberry lemon panna cotta. So smooth, creamy, and heavenly! Just the right amount of citrusy syrup to complement the richness. Gather features fresh and local ingredients. This family owned and run restaurant is one of many endeavors Lisa and Jonathan Burr have successfully fully created. You will not be disappointed with your Gather dining experience!

Finally, a babysitter and a date night with my wife for Valentine's Day. We decided to check out…read moreThe Oak Room as we love The Elms, another local restaurant with the same owners. Unfortunately for us, The Oak Room fell far from the tree family. Upon entering the vintage estate, you are met by 5/5 ambience and a truly enticing looking dining experience. This is the point where our dining experience peaked. Read on if you want the full tea. In a nutshell, our evening was a series of disappointments painted onto a theme of incredibly slow service. Regarding the service, at the 1:40 mark past arrival, we had still not received our entrees. We watched all the tables around us wait and wait for their checks, only to have to finally request the check. It was not busy. My small 6oz water glass sat empty most of our 2+ hours there. With how salty our food was, this wasn't good. Service 2/5. For the food, 4/5. We ordered the beet salad hors d'oeuvres, which was perfect. An amazing plate. The butternut squash soup was incredibly sweet and not what we expected. Tasted like 50/50 squash/brown sugar. The duck entree and tenderloin steak were quite good, but not memorable. $65 for 6oz steak and no side. Was the crust of the side bread salted? Was the steak actually salted? Hm. More water please. Now the intangibles. Weird intangibles. So during this 1:40 waiting for the entree, I spilled my red wine and unfortunately my wife had a white shirt on. ‍ Good thing it wasn't a first date! A little while later a man walks up to our table and says Hi. Hi we say. My wife and I glance at each other, both thinking "who the hell is this?" Normal clothes, no name tag. Next he asks how was our food? Oh ok, manager or owner. Good to know. Well, we hadn't received our food yet and took the opportunity to ask if we could have it. Oh yeah, he looks at my wife's wine covered shirt and says "I see you have plenty of wine" and asks me if I would like to order another glass of wine. Did the owner just make fun of us for spilling wine and ruining a shirt? Yes he did. For the inconvenience of sitting there with no entree and rarely water for 1:40, they offered to reduce the check. They took off the glass of wine that I didn't get to drink. Throughout all this, I'm sitting in a broken chair that keeps catching my sweater and causing a snag. Overall, our experience was 2/5. Giving the benefit of the doubt, I'll rate it 3/5. If I want to spend 2 hours spending $200 and getting made fun of by a restaurant manager, I'll be back. If not, I'll go elsewhere next time.

Started with some warm foccacia and a charcuterie board. For the entree, we shared the bone in pork chop with truffle mashed, mushrooms, and caramelized parsnips. Everything was flavored, perfect, and the pork was cooked perfectly. We will absolutely visit again in the future for any of our special occasions.
