Dr. Engert did my 5th gum graft. This is my first gum graft with him and I would have to say I highly recommend him out of all the periodontists I have seen. First, he knows his craft. I had the least amount of bleeding this time around and he did two teeth. I was able to return to normal activities within a week. I took 3 days off and then returned to work in the office. Within a week, I was back to running with no bleeding. Second, he does take insurance so all I owed him was a re-consult and a co-pay. My graft was delayed by over a year because I got pregnant and then I was nursing so I did do a re-check to make sure we were on the same page. Third, he reads personalities very well. I didn't want to do it (again); I didn't want to be there so he made it super efficient. He placed my prescriptions to my preferred pharmacy ahead of time. He recommended I bring an audio book to listen to during the operation and broke up the procedure into smaller time increments. For example, he would say "Okay, so now there will be 20 minutes of this.... 15 minutes of this...." Fourth, his front staff is incredibly kind and got me in for an earlier follow-up since my office is downtown. I was able to get seen at my convenience. I highly recommend him as a periodontist. Gum grafts are sometimes necessary but always uncomfortable. Dr. Engert will be by your side to make sure the process is as seamless as possible. read more

Dr. Engert is an extremely skill surgeon. Admittedly, my gum graft case was severe and complicated on my lower central incisors. I also have pretty intense medical anxiety and have moved many times over the last few years, so it's been a struggle to find a consistent practitioner who I had enough trust to move forward with this procedure even though I was very aware I needed it. First, I'll say this -- if you try searching "gum graft" on the internet, your search will return disparate experiences both in procedure and healing experiences. It makes it nearly impossible to get a good handle on what the experience will be like and how to evaluate a potential surgeon. From my research, Dr. Engert takes the best approach I've seen -- he protected the graft area with periodontal (clay-like) packing, which for me, lasted until my post-op and kept the area safe and secure. The surgery itself was manageable (again -- I suffer from medical anxiety and was appreciative for the mild sedation), and I had very few bleeding experiences (which given the size of my donor site, was honestly impressive). The pain was also very manageable (surgery itself isn't painful; I took strong ibuprofen preventatively for the first few days and then weaned off it around Day 5/6). A week out, and everything is healing really nicely. I couldn't have actually imagined that my gum health would be on its way to being restored to this degree. I'm very appreciative to Dr. Engert and his staff for the care and support and highly recommend him. read more

I have had two gum grafts done with Dr. Engert and was really impressed with the level of care he took with the surgeries. Dr. Engert took the time to explain to me all details involved with the surgery and answered all of my questions. I was very nervous about the procedure and the level of pain that might be involved. His staff (office) where so on top of everything. They called me prior to the surgery to make sure that we ordered all prescribed medications including something to help me with anxiousness morning of surgery. During the surgery I was able to relax (as much as possible) and I think one of his assistants even held my hand during the 1st surgery. The follow up appointments where a breeze. I had incredible dental pain and a friend recommended this man highly. I give any business a one star if they neglect returning my phone calls after I have left five messages for them to call me back and still after four days, NO REPLY or RETURN PHONE CALL. He obviously does not need to make any money because he does NOT want any business. Do NOT bother to WASTE your time or probably HIS. Instead, call as many recommended Dentists as you can and as soon as you can!! Leave a message and whoever that can get you in first without any DENTAL LAWSUITs are the people you want to have treat your condition. Most REPUTABLE medical/dental practitioners will get back to you as soon as they can if they are interested in your well being. The ones that don't are making more money that they can stash into their jacuzzi and could care less about you unless you are "CONNECTED". Yes, he does list his emergency contact number, but he does not answer it and it goes into his voice mail, which he does not bother to take the time to call you back on. We are talking about your health, well being and common courtesy...which, by the way is lacking in this man's practice...Yes...he is still PRACTICING.... You have been warned. Learn from this experience. EN-(g)-ert is iNERT. Repeat. Do NOT WASTE your time and continue in excrutiating pain as you wait for this En(G)ert's non-existent return phone call. It will NOT happen. If you are at all squeamish, or have a fear for the dentist .... you may not like to read this. I am going to describe a subepithelial connective tissue graft. I was given a prescription of Lorazepam to take an hour before my procedure. That was to help with anxiety, but I am not sure if it helped. I don't have much fear of the dentist, but I figured something to take the edge off might help. They make an impression to make a plastic cover to cover the roof of my mouth. I get numb with a few shots on my lower gum and one on the roof of my mouth. It wasn't as bad as I thought. I plug in my iPod as the Novocaine starts to work. Here is where it gets dicey. To take the gum from the roof of my mouth, they make an incision and fold it over to make a flap. Then they cut out the sample they need, fold the flap closed and suture it shut. The graft site if prepped and the sample from the roof is stitched into place and held with packing that looks like bubble gum. Done in about 45 minutes. The worst thing about the whole process was the lack of teeth brushing. I wasn't supposed to brush, especially the surgery area for a few days after. I had NO pain at all, and just minor bleeding. I was able to take off the plastic cover after about 6 days, and the packing came off just after that. Completely healed, even the donor site in about two weeks. As for the doctor, Dr. Engert is all business and doesn't mess around. Not much of a bedside manner but I couldn't hear much anyway with my ear buds in. He has odd hours and is not in the office every day. I will have to go see the doctor once a year for deep cleanings due to bad genetics. I gotta have some flaws. Get over it and see the doc if you need a gum graft, aka soft tissue transplant. read more

I could have sworn I already wrote a review for Dr. Engert after my surgery because I was so happy with him but apparently time got away from me. My general dentist referred me to him for gum grafts/surgery. Happy 30th birthday to me. Well, Dr. Engert was very patient and explained everything clearly. I also was petrified of having the skin graft to cover the gums so Dr. Engert went through all the pros and cons of using my own skin versus someone else's (I forget what polite medical term they use for using someone else's tissue, but they used to use pig tissue- he assured me mine was human tissue. Rest assured my brothers got lots of pig mouth jokes in prior to the clear up). Dr. Engert's office submitted everything to insurance early so that we knew exactly what insurance would cover of the cost prior to the surgery. The surgery lasted a while- I think longer than planned and I was the last appointment of the day, which to me means Dr. Engert really took his time to get everything right when he could have tried to rush through it and call it a day. I honestly didn't look into any other periodontists before this surgery because that really just sounds like a nightmare that will only induce anxiety and I trust my dentist's professional opinion. I did look Dr. Engert up on Yelp though along with his website and decided the high reviews were good enough for me. When I met him I felt comfortable moving forward with him as my surgeon. We had a few followup appointments after the surgery to check healing progress and everything went great. I'll be back when the other side of my mouth is ready for some fresh protective flesh too. read more

I just had my second graft surgery and I can just say the best - not only about Dr. Engert but about the entire team there. The staff is super helpful and friendly- from scheduling appointments, follow ups, check in, assistance during the appointment, insurance questions etc. In my initial meeting with Dr. Engert to talk about the procedures he took his time to examine, explain and lay out a treatment plan for and with me. I felt very comfortable and he is very professional. Also, the costing and insurance procedure was explained nicely and transparent - no surprises. He used a different method than the shots and I actually did not think it would work, but it work fantastically. Dr. Engert is the consumate professional. He was a good fit for my personality and needs. He is courteous, attentive, informative and above all, direct as well as honest. He gave his honest opinion and did not paint any false pictures. I decided to have him perform the crown lengthening surgery needed to correct a very poor crown preparation in San Jose by a dentist with very poor skills. I had been suffering for over 5 years, as I was afraid the correction may be worse then the problem. After it was completed, it turned out much better then I expected. I don't really care about pain if something is done correctly and a relatively pain free experience was the added benefit. After a month of tissue recovery, a very nice crown was placed by the dentist sending me to Dr. Engert. Today I am very pleased with the result of Dr. Engert and Dr. Chad Lyew DDS. I must note that reading the couple of negative comments, good providers are busy providers. Bad ones are always available, as they should be. Dr. Engert is busy for a reason. Perhaps it takes a while to get in. Perhaps your message may be lost. I am not seeing a healthcare provider to feel like I am the most important person in the world. Dr. Engert is awesome! I had to get a gum graft (due to night-time teeth grinding) and the surgery was painless and healed quickly. He fixed me up with a mouth guard, and unlike Gentle Dental, he took the time to shave down the molded plastic to fit my mouth. While I found Dr. Engert to be quite personable and fair, his receptionist was rude and didn't appear to be very competent. I had my initial consultation in November and my surgery was scheduled for January 13. Without getting into all the details, during those two months, she never bothered to reach out to me nor my dentist when she found the insurance information she had was incorrect. So the day of my surgery, the paperwork / coverage was not available. Dr. Engert did offer to go ahead with the surgery and sort out the insurance later, even offering to do it for free should there be issues with the insurance (which I believe he knew there wouldn't be). While discussing this, a woman came in, 10 mins after my scheduled appointment, and was immediately escortedinto a room. On her way, I heard her ask if they had her nitrous and she was told "it's in the room waiting for you". She was there only for a "cleaning". After Dr. Engert and I discussed the insurance matter and I agreed to go ahead with the surgery, he said "well we have another problem. The woman getting the cleaning has the nitrous you were supposed to get". When I asked how this could happen, especially since I was there for surgery and she was there for a cleaning, he said "I guess we dropped the ball on that too". I left and personally do not feel comfortable having surgery there. read more
