I consulted with Dr. Im regarding some teeth that had thin gum and gum recession. He recommended a connective tissue graft. I had also consulted with two other periodontists that teach at UCLA...they recommended a free gingival graft - not a connective tissue graft - as the best treatment given my circumstances. I transitioned to Dr. Im a few years ago when Dr. Mukai retired. Dr. I'm just recently did 2 gum grafts for me and I was very pleased with his care. He and his staff take the time to explain exactly what is needed and what is happening, and I never felt rushed. On the contrary, they make me feel like I am the only patient they need to tend to. I have had to call the office multiple times to reschedule due to my own conflicts and they have always been accommodating and gracious. Billing is also an important factor with such practitioners, and they have always been very transparent with upfront costs and efficient in submitting bills to my insurance so that I get reimbursed promptly. I went to Dr. Im on the recommendation of my general dentist and very positive online reviews, and had a terrible experience. Dr. Im recommended a gum graft to address gum recession on one of my dental implants to avoid the possibility of peri-implantitis (infection that can compromise an implant). After the procedure the graft became infected and did not heal properly over the course of several months and multiple follow-up visits. He attempted to address the infection with a laser procedure but it did not work and my gum receded back to where it was before the initial procedure. At this point he finally performed a 3D x-ray and discovered that he'd failed to diagnose that my implant was already infected before the graft was performed. He recommended a course of treatment of having the implant removed and replaced and I scheduled (another) oral surgery with him. One week before the second surgery I emailed Dr. Im some follow-up questions about the procedure. Two days later I received a voicemail from his admin staff saying that Dr. Im had decided that my trust in him was compromised and he was no longer the right provider for me and cancelled my surgery. I have since found a new periodontist who was able to resolve my infection with a much more minimally invasive LAPIP procedure than the implant replacement Dr. Im had recommended. I hate to write reviews like this but I had plenty of confidence in Dr. Im based on all of the reviews here and felt it was important to share what a terrible experience I had over the course of five months in his care. read more

Wanted to see Dr. Mukai but he's now retired so was referred to Dr. Im at the same practice. Their office had me update my patient profile and submit my dental insurance plans weeks before my appointment so I did that. On the day of appointment, Dr. Im performed the exam and his staff took x-rays in their in-office machine. However they neglected to inform me ahead of time that Dr. Im or his practice is not "in-network" on any my insurance plans. Ended up paying out of pocket for the evaluation and x-rays for nothing. Over 5 years ago I was in need of some extensive periodontal care. I interviewed 3-4 different dentists, but was not satisfied. A friend referred me to Dr. Terry Im. I knew immediately that he was who I had been looking for. He and his team performed the necessary periodontal surgery with skill and care to my complete satisfaction. I've been a patient of Dr Gunstream for a year now. Spend 5 minutes with her and you will realize you are with someone who is extremely smart and ridiculously competent and what she does. I could not be happier with my care. Her chair side manner is friendly, direct and understandable and her recommendations and conservative approach to care can't be beat. Her staff is no less terrific. I was just in today for a 6 mos follow up and was just so impressed with the quality of care I received from the hygienist prior to my consultation with Dr. Gunstream. My previous dentist told me I needed $15,000.00 worth of work done in my month; extractions, implants, braces, and other oral surgeries. Dr. Im, examined me, said there were some concerns, but we would take it one step at a time. I've been seeing Dr. Im for less than a year, and I feel great and more confident with my teeth. I never had visibly bad teeth, certainly didn't look like $15k worth of damage, but now with Dr. Im and his team, I feel like I might have my own teeth for a little while longer. And even though Dr. Im is not in my provider network, I've still only paid less than $2000 for 1 extraction, oral surgery, including a bone-graft and multiple deep cleanings. I've also learned how to properly floss (now it's a habit) and have been introduced to other inexpensive tools to help keep my smile great. Dr. Im and his team also have great bedside manner and seem to genuinely care about their patient's oral health and not how much they can bill. read more

Choosing a good dentist is pretty hard but I'm glad I went to Dr. Im. I had a front tooth that needed to be pulled out and an immediate implant placed. I couldn't be walking around like the dude in The Hangover. I knew I would be a difficult case because I'm pretty picky about my teeth and how they look. Dr. Im knew my concerns and succeeded with flying colors. His chair side manner was very professional and office staff is awesome. I don't normally write review (in fact this is the first review I've ever written!) but I had such a great experience with Dr. Im that I felt I just had to write. I had some major work done on my gums and Dr. Im was terrific. During the initial visit he did a thorough exam and then took the time to patiently explain all my options without the medical terminology that allowed me to understand what was going on. When I finally went in for my procedure he again asked if I had any questions and did a great job of allaying my fears and concerns. A first rate doctor and first class practice. I don't know anybody who likes going to their teeth worked on, but if you to, do yourself a favor and go to see Dr. Im. Dr. Im is wonderful! I was initially very apprehensive as I've had some less-than-pleasant experiences with periodontists in the past (I've actually put this appointment off for over a year as a result). However, Dr. Im was very knowledgeable, personable and confidently reassured me that my dental issue could be resolved. He took the time to show me the pictures of my teeth and explain the procedure thoroughly. Additionally, he was considerate of insurance needs and said the office schedules these procedures a few weeks out to allow time to determine insurance coverage. I'm extremely happy to have found Dr. Im! If I had to point out a negative aspect, I will say that the practice has an answering service all day on Mondays and Tues-Fri 12-2:30 pm, during which you cannot call to schedule appointments. Unfortunately the answering service representatives are not particularly clear on this matter, so it took 4 phone calls before I was able to determine the days/times during which I could actually call to schedule an appointment. This morning went back (10 months later) for a 'healing abutment' to be fitted (i.e. dig through the healed gum and screw something new onto the implant now it's set; next step after this is the crown. Anyway, Dr Im absolutely rocks. He was in and out as nearly painlessly as you could imagine, in practically no time. He's really nice guy. His staff are cool. Honestly, if you need serious stuff done (like implants) he's the nicest guy in SF I've found and he's somewhat less ruinously expensive than the other local options. FWIW you could also consider flying to Costa Rica if you're on a tight budget and lots to get done - I've done that twice, first time great, second time not quite so great but I still recommend it - something like 1/8th the cost of SF. read more
