I love Marwa and Gabe, they are the best!! I went to Enigma for the first time ever last night. I was a little nervous because I had never been there before, and wanted something pretty drastic--a light ash blonde balayage which is reaaally hard to get on dark Asian hair. Plus, my hair had been previously dyed and was a pretty orangey color to start with. So they would have to color-correct that as well. Marwa was super patient with me and answered all my questions. The shop normally closes at 7 pm, but she stayed till around 9:30 pm (!!) to make sure everything looked PERFECT before I went home. She wanted to make sure my hair was lightened enough first, then brushed through it again with darker dye to make sure the transition looked super natural. And she threw in a quick trim in for free! So sweet of her! I felt bad I kept her so late but she really did a great job. My hair came out beautifully and was the perfect pale ashy color that I was looking for. Nobody has ever been able to get my dark, thick hair this light before! Plus all the orange was GONE. It was a miracle! For the cherry on top, when Gabe was giving me instructions on maintenance etc, I said that I'd never heard of a wet brush before. With that, he pulled out a new one from a box, and gave it to me for free! I've never had such great service at a salon before. And the results were beautiful! False advertisement. They advertise a Japanese straightening on Groupon and when I called to inquire the guy who answered said it's not what they offer. I told him it clearly states Japanese straightening and he said "no". So my eyes are lying to me? I called Groupon right away to complain. This is like many businesses to do, they try to get their name out with Groupon but don't like that you actually use it. It's pretty sad. If I can if this place zero stars I would. Gatsby themed party, I wanted Gatsby waves, vintage waves. Instead, I left with dry, unpolished, un blowdried, dried up, hair sprayed beach waves. I was willing to pay any price to get what I wanted. Showed her pictures. I interjected and told her to pin the curls to start molding the wave, so she did. I started to walk her thru the process... WHY?! 80 dollars at check out and I told them there was. O way that was an 80 dollar job. They brought it down to 48; but price was not the issue for me, I had an event to attend, I wanted to look the part. I was so disappointed. They did reduce the price but I wish someone would've seen the discontent in my face which was clear and offered to help her. I know that's stepping on someone's feet, but this was so important to me. You go to a salon to come out feeling better, for that boost of confidence, I left so insecure and unsatisfied. After a six year state search for the perfect stylist, I found her, Marwa, at Enigma. Her and the salon are fabulous. I have also witnessed some of the most amazing cuts done by the owner. For more than a decade I have been getting highlights and was never once told bout "highlight touch ups" vs partial or whole head highlights. This is done so the hair doesnt look over highlighted. Then came Marwa who cares more about making you look like a million bucks vs draining every cent from her customers. I have long hair and whenever I have asked other stylists at other salons to give me a new look, they have only ever given a basic trim. However, Marwa was asked to do the same thing and gave me the best cut of my life. I have never had so many compliments, nor taken less time to fix my hair. This place is just amazing. read more

First and foremost let me just say that the Owner Gabriel Colon has been doing my hair for 13 years. I can say that Gabriel Colon is a true artist in his trade. He is a true professional. He is kind and very accomodating. The Staff is fantastic. They are all genuinely friendly and professional. They all have great personalities. They smile, they talk to you, they offer you drinks. These are good people... Secondly, the decor is quite amazing Very decorative, very unique. I love the path they chose for designing the salon. It feels "cool" to have this as your "go to salon". Now, we established that the staff are super friendly and that the place looks incredible.. What about the skills though? Very quickly, I will say that they are AMAZING. Super. Fabulous. Awesome. You pick the word that suits you! So now to Sara B., She had hair past her derriere. She wanted her hair cut to her waistline. So you can figure out how much was cut. I consider that more than just a trim. She looked wonderful and she even attested to that. As far as her saying that she was missed misinformed, I highly doubt that. Worst experience ever! Will never go back again! I was so excited to try Balayage and now I need to find a place with an experienced colorist. I now need to find someone to fix the mistake of one very inexperienced hairdresser, if you can call her that. Marwa has no idea how to color properly and instead of giving me gorgeous blond streaks I ended up with a cooper mess. On top of it all she gave a streak in the middle that makes me look like a skunk. What really upset me the most was her reluctance to take ownership for her catastrophic mistake. To make matters worse knowing that I was not happy in the least with the end result I was still charged full price for a service that was horrific. Beware of getting your hair colored by Marwa. Because of her and the lack of respect I received I will never again be going to your hair salon. read more

My wife and daughter went in to meet with Gabriel to discuss options for her very curly/frizzy hair. My daughter is 15 years old and very unhappy with her current look, and Gabriel said that there were many options for her. When my daughter went in the next week for her styling, however, he never discussed styling options with my daughter, but instead said, "let's do a trim", and preceded to do a small cut, and then put her hair in a wet braid. My daughter, who is very shy didn't say anything during the process, but upon picking her up we were appalled, not only by the fact that Gabriel didn't even attempt a style, but that he charged her $79 for basically nothing. We called immediately to say we wanted to take her back in to get the kind of styling we had discussed previously, but they could not fit her in on that day, so we asked for a new appointment, but for no additional charge since we had not got the type of styling we had been promised. Engima flat out refused to make good on their satisfaction claims, refusing to give her a styling for the amount we already paid. The most upsetting part that the excuse they gave why they couldn't give her a new style without paying all over again was that she "deviated from what they had discussed when she was in the chair." The entire process has been traumatic for my daughter who was looking forward to a great new hair style, and now feels awful because she didn't feel confident speak up for herself as Gabriel proceeded to work on her hair. ... Now that Gabriel has responded, my daughter wishes to comment on Gabriels points. 1. Time of consultation. Gabriel said it was one hour. My mother and I were there for 15 minutes. We had eaten at Jin Glatt and stopped into Enigma afterward. My mother had to leave for work so we were paying attention to the time. 2. "I wanted my hair long, and my mother wanted it short." Not true, we wanted to know what he thought would look good. 3. "She was not shy in stating she did not want to go short and demanded to keep it long" Before I saw Gabriel I was brought to the lady who washed and deep conditioned my hair. When I was brought to Gabe, I thought he would make some suggestions on styling, Instead, he just asked, "do you want a trim?" and I said OK. He then said that I was one of his only clients that don't talk much. That was the extent of our conversation. 4. "She did not want to have her hair blow-dried, so we gave her a complementary braid instead." After the trim, he never offered a blow-dry, he just said, "How about we put in a nice braid?" I said, "OK." 5. "She wasn't happy with the braid, and she was incredibly difficult to work with." After the braid was done, I said "I don't like middle part," and he said "Oh, you can take it out." I then said, "Thank you, paid and left." 6. "So we gave her the deep conditioning and braid for free, and only charged her for a long haircut." No, he charged $79 for everthing. 7. "Later on you wife called and wanted us to redo the entire service for free." My mom called as soon as she saw the haircut. She wanted him to take her back in to style it, but he said he didn't have time. My dad then called and spoke to the receptionist who said that he'd like to make another appointment with Gabriel to give me a style like my mom and I had discussed during our consultation, but he didn't feel he should have to pay for a whole other cut. She said that she would speak to Gabriel after work hours and leave a message with us saying if the appointment was made, and if he would agree not to charge again. (We would not be able to pick up the phone because Shabbos was that night and the next day and they were closed on Sunday and Monday and Passover started Monday night.) We got a voice message that they made an appointment for me on April 19th, but they didn't mention how much it would be. 8. "Recently you (my dad) called and stated that you wanted an appointment to have the hair style done for free." No, Enigma phoned us to say we had the appointment days before. My father called to see if Gabriel had agreed to do it for what we'd already paid. 9."During the phone conversation you were explaining her special needs." What special needs? He said I was shy and didn't speak up to say I wanted a style, not a trim and a braid, but I figured that Gabriel knew what he was doing. In the end I got a beautiful style at Ulta. It cost less and they were very nice. I would actually like to forget about the whole thing at Enigma, but I don't appreciate being called "special needs" and having to read all of this BS, so I wanted to set the record straight. read more

If you're hesitant to make an appointment just do it my hair was so over bleached and broken that I used to have one here and every time I walked out of my old salon my hair was getting shorter and shorter her. This place is amazing especially so close to home. They offered coffee right when you come in. The staff is very friendly and helpful. It is quite pricy especially for barely a trim which costed me $30 on top of the balayage. Other than that, I am very happy with my hair and I will come back to get a $30 worth haircut and probably even another coloring. read more

DO NOT GO HERE IF YOU WANT QUALITY SERVICE!!!!!!! This is the 3rd time I have gone and walked out about to break out in tears. When you walk in, they greet you and talk you up into thinking you're going to get this fabulous hair cut/color. Gabe starts with giving you all these cool ideas that get you so excited to get your hair done. As time passes and he realizes he has other clients to tend to and/or the salon is closing soon, he will completely change his plans for your hair in order for him to accomodate the other guests. I scheduled a cut and FULL highlights for myself. I DIDN'T EVEN GET A HAIR CUT. I was told my hair was beautiful dried naturally (every other time i went I've gotten it blown out) I also only got "TOUCH UP" highlights WHEN I DON'T EVEN HAVE HIGHLIGHTS IN THE FIRST PLACE. When I first walked in, Gabe said I was in desperate need of a haircut - by the end of the night a hair cut wasn't even mentioned and Gabe slyly slipped out through the back and left me to deal with the receptionist. My hair looks no different from when I walked in the place. They didn't even BRUSH it after it air dried. I was stuck under the dryer and left there alone and then that was it. Save your money and bypass this salon! I had an average experience the first time. I thought that I should give Enigma Salon a second chance and what a mistake it was. Gabe and I looked at pics and agreed on a color for my highlights. However, he applied a different color to my hair without my approval because HE FELT that the color we had initially chosen would be too orange. Aside from that, he does not take care of the customer throughout the service. He had another stylist blowout my hair. In addition, the water they provided had black chips of something in it. Gabe did not say much about it but quickly took it away. Needless to say, Enigma Salon does not meet the standards of a person who is looking for quality service and professionalism. I now have no reservations in returning to the more expensive and distant salon I have gone to in Montclair. I thought I would save money by going to Enigma but it cost me my wants and happiness. read more
