I had the most heartening experience at this agency yesterday…read more I was looking for an address nearby to pick up my grandson at his school bus. My gps was not showing a map in the cloudy, rainy weather and I could only remember some landmarks during my arrival by taxi the previous night. Also, I couldn't find the high beam on the rental car. Initially, I went to the gas station on the corner. They're supposed to help travellers in distress, right? They heard my problems and sent me across the street because "there was a car rental agency there which could help me" ( not mine as it happened this time). So I walked in for help at Hertz. Trevor at the front desk, greeted me pleasantly and asked how he could help. He recognized the street name I wanted; pulled out his cell phone to confirm directions ( 2 minutes from there if you knew the way). Then he put on his cap and walked over in the rain with me to my car, parked literally by the front door of the gas station, and showed me where to turn on the car lights. Before he left me he reviewed my route and reminded me that we had just over-ridden the automatic lights. I would have to switch back when I arrived. It was a perfectly competent, helpful and generous effort. This Hertz agency defines a good neighbor. I am happy for the people who live here. I got to my grandson's bus on time.

On April 6 I reserved a car through Expedia from Rent-A-Wreck of Philadelphia Intl Airport. On the day of my trip, April 9, during my layover, I noticed an email in my SPAM folder from alternativeracnj@gmail.com (a random gmail account, NOT a Rent A Wreck or any corporate email account) claiming to be Rent-A-Wreck PHL and asking for credit card information and a photo of my driver's license. This email did not list the reservation number, had grammatical errors and odd formatting, and looked just like a typical phishing scam. If I sent you an email like that from my gmail account claiming to be some business you might have used and I asked for your credit card information and photo of your driver's license, would you give it to me? But I called the Rent A Wreck phone number shown on the Expedia reservation to make sure everything was OK and was told that my reservation was canceled because I didn't respond in time to that shady email in my SPAM folder. Now I was left with no rental car on arrival. I've rented cars dozens of times and never once had to reply to a random email with my credit card info *after* I had already reserved and *paid* online. The woman at Rent-A-Wreck I spoke with that day said she would at least refund my payment. But... I just got the credit card bill later and the full rental charge is *still there*, even though their own rental policy lists $50 for late cancellation! I called Rent-A-Wreck PHL again to ask for a refund and was told by Kelsey they would *not* issue a refund and that the woman who told me that on the 9th no longer worked there. I suppose they feel they are not beholden to a former employee's promises, nor to basic fairness for that matter. They set unreasonable expectations for customers that no other rental agencies set by expecting them to respond to emails from a shady random account that could end up in a SPAM folder. Then, they violated their own policies by charging the full rental fee instead of the stated $50 cancellation fee. Finally, they were completely dismissive in their interactions with me. Expedia won't do anything about it without authorization from the rental company. Avoid this business and any others run by Carlos Machuca at all costs.

Last week, I called and made an appointment to have an energy chain link installed in my van. I explained clearly that I would be traveling from New York, about 80 miles, and I spoke with Rigo, who assured me they had handled this type of work many times before. When I arrived for the appointment, I handed over the van on time and spoke directly with the mechanic to make sure he understood what needed to be installed and how. Right away, I felt concerned because he did not seem familiar with the job. Still, I trusted them because I had been told they could handle the work. After about an hour, the mechanic could not locate the electric plug. My sister had to show him where it was, which made me even more surprised and concerned. If they had done this type of work many times before, I expected the mechanic to be more familiar with the process. After several more hours, nothing meaningful was completed. I was told they were calling someone else to help guide them, but still nothing was resolved. After waiting around five hours, I was finally told that the part I brought would not work and that they would have to order another part. I was willing to leave a deposit for the correct part, but then I was given a bill charging approximately $508 for diagnostic fees. I was shocked. I was not clearly informed upfront about this diagnostic charge, and after waiting so long with no repair completed, I felt this was completely unfair. In my opinion, the shop should have been honest from the beginning if they did not have the right experience or mechanic available for this type of work. Instead, I drove a long distance, waited for hours, left with the van still not fixed, and then was presented with a large diagnostic bill. The owner came across as a smooth talker, but based on my experience, I did not feel treated fairly or professionally. Overall, this was an awful experience. I would not recommend this dealership or repair shop. Anyone considering using them should be very careful and ask for all charges in writing upfront before leaving a vehicle there.
