    I have to post this review - I had a great experience using Payless and saved over $150 for a 6 day…read morerental, over the car rental reservation I made through Costco at a larger Car rental company. The agent at the desk sits right next to Budget at the EWR rental car area so you can use the Tram to get there. They are definitely not as automated as the larger agencies, the agent was actually running out to the lot to make sure his car inventory was there. He gave me a brand new spotlessly clean Chevy Cruze which is a surprisingly nice smallish intermediate car. When I returned the car, I went to the Budget return area where I was checked in by a person who wrote in my paperwork (not a printed receipt) so I had to stop at the rental desk on the way to the Tram. I wanted to share my experience so that you would not be afraid to try them. I had made a backup reservation at a larger rental agency just in case something shady happened when I went to pick up my car. I had verified that both my regular car insurance and my credit card would cover my rental - I added no extra services. And I filled the gas tank before I returned it. I'll update again if anything unexpected happens with the charges to my card, etc, but so far so good.

The car is also dirty. scuffs on the ceiling, dirt in between the seat... but its a cheap company so I roll with it. The most annoying part is when I get back from the trip and see I was double charged for highway tolls when I specifically put my EZ-Pass up and made put their EZ pass in the correct, unable position. It took 2 months to get my money back and the only reason why (I belive) I got it back is because I threatened to sue; they did not answer my emails/calls previously to that message. I UNDERSTAND PAYLESS IS CHEAP, BUT IT IS A SCAM. YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR I GUESS.

My girlfriend was literally traumatized driving it and in poor weather you could image.     Please do NOT rent from here!…read more A few days before I was supposed to pick up my rental car, I get an email informing me that my rental was cancelled because they had overbooked. Considering I had booked the rental several weeks prior, and this was Christmas weekend, I was not happy to see this email. I called them up and they told me they could get me a vehicle but it would be much older and also in worse condition. At first they weren't willing to give me any sort of price break for this severe downgrade of a vehicle, but they ultimately did. On the day that my flight lands, I take a shuttle to the parking lot where the rental was located. I look at the car and immediately see a problem. The car is missing the front license plate. For a car registered in NJ (which this one was), a front license plate is required by law. New Jersey issues tens of thousands of tickets every year for this. http://www.nj.com/traffic/index.ssf/2015/12/will_you_get_a_ticket_for_not_having_a_front_license_plate_in_nj.html I also notice that the front windows are also tinted. Again, this is very illegal in NJ and leads to thousands of tickets every year. I called up Rent-A-Wreck and find out that they are closed on Christmas, so I have no one to talk to about this. I'm now stuck in a parking lot, on Christmas day, with only an illegal car to drive. Since I had no one in NJ that could pick me up or help me out in any way, I had to take the car. I call Rent-A-Wreck up the next day when they open. I'm told by the employee that they had said that the car wouldn't be in the best shape. When I reiterated that my concerns were about the legality of driving it, they didn't seem to understand at all why this was a problem. I ask to speak with a manager and am told that the manager wouldn't be back until Thursday. Considering it was Saturday and I would return the car by Monday, waiting that long was unacceptable, so I called corporate and registered my complaint. After a few days of not hearing anything back, I call back and wind up speaking to the manager at Sayreville. He told me that it was my fault for taking the rental. He said I should have left the rental there, taken a shuttle back to the airport and book with a different company. That is the MANAGER's response. He took no responsibility for the condition they had left the vehicle in and blamed me! Please, save yourself the trouble, these guys are sleazy and will screw you and blame you for it. Additional Notes about the condition of the car: 1. Headlights were so fogged over as to render them nearly useless 2. Gas was on Empty when I picked it up 3. Both bumpers held on by hardware store screws 4. Interior held on by hardware store screws 5. Interior had a moldy smell 6. It was a Mustang with 163,000 miles. I didn't even think Mustangs could last that long!
