I saw her looking intently at my husband in a decidedly unfriendly way. Thinking that perhaps she was thinking about something else and was just looking in an unfortunate direction, I turned back to my husband and we continued the discussion about the most appropriate sized planter for our new fig sapling. He continued to look and I took my child's hand we started to move around the booth to see what other options were to be had. The woman was still frowning at my husband's back. I tried to meet her eye, but was unable even though I walked right by her and smiled in an attempt to open a conversation. I decided not to purchase. Did she think that my husband, a former military reservist, was going to pick up a 3x3 cedar planter and bolt leaving my son and I standing there? She clearly thought it because he was not white. We circled the rest of the booth on our way out, admiring a clever bench with a plastic lined planter on either side. Even though we audibly commented on how neat it was, neither she nor the man working in the booth acknowledged us in any way. We ended up going to Fred Meyer and getting a ceramic pot. Not nearly as clever or nice, but at least the cashiers didn't look at him as if he didn't belong in their world. Won't ever purchase from this company.

NW Gas Lines (aka NW Performance Heating) was engaged by the company that we purchased our gas…read morefireplace from to trouble shoot a non-functioning, brand new unit that was installed by a different contractor. NW Gas Lines did a great job trouble-shooting the problem, with the ultimate resolution being the installation of a different, better-suited gas fireplace. At this point, I was very happy with their service. However, they forget to install a thermostat when they installed the new fireplace. After they installed the thermostat, we couldn't get it to work no matter what we tried and the contractor hadn't left the owner's manual or model number, which we could've used to trouble shoot the situation. So I reached out via text. Then email. Then voicemail. They never responded, which I found odd because they were very responsive throughout the trouble-shooting and installation process. Over the course of about two months, I sent two or three emails and texts, and left one voicemail all asking for a link to the owner's manual or the model number. But I never received a response. Eventually, I reached out to the salesman who sold us the FP and the contractor responded with an angry, snarky, unhelpful, curt email that didn't address anything I asked via text, email or voicemail. The kicker was: every communication from me was very positive and limited to the same brief message (i.e. I need the owner's manual) every two to three weeks, so I wasn't hassling him. I wouldn't recommend this company because their communication skills are nonexistent and when they finally were forced to respond by the company who sold us the fireplace, it seemed like their reading skills were also nonexistent as they still didn't answer my simple request for the model number and/or owner's manual.

Michael walked us through the a variety of options and rough estimates of the all-in-costs and timelines. His information led us to buy a different house instead of building out a basement. He also provided us with fantastic information about how to assess concrete in basements in Portland, as well information on build years and neighborhoods that frequently had suspect basements. His "concrete school" lessons were so valuable as we sought a new house. I am certain he saved us tens (hundreds) of thousands of dollars by preventing us from making offers on homes with suspect foundations or at least building repair costs into the offers. One house we turned down ended up having sewage leaking into the finished basement! If we do any excavation or concrete work in the future, Michael will 100% be our excavation and concrete guy.

My house was one of the ones hit with a citation to repair our sidewalks in North Portland…read more Immediately after receiving the citation from the city the contractor bids began to pour in. I was amazed at how many contractors gain access to the sidewalk repair notices and just start assaulting homeowners with their bids, (Seemed a bit lazy, desperate, and unprofessional to me). Sidewalk Solutions was not one of the companies that sent me a bid in the mail. I found some reviews online and was impressed with the photos on their website. I received word back very quickly once submitting a request for a price quote. The bid I received was not the cheapest, but also far from being most expensive. The great thing is there were no hidden or unexpected fees. Even the city permit and the tree inspection were included. The bill is not sent until the city comes out and approves of the work that has been done. Chris scheduled my sidewalks to be completed along with some others right in my neighborhood. The workers were respectful of my yard and cleaned up all their mess. My sidewalks look fantastic now and are totally up to city standards. (Also comforting to know that people will no longer trip right in front of my house)

I got the owner at the birth of his first child he was very considerate even though he was awfully distracted at the moment. Even though he was distracted he took care of everything with the city showed up did the job a little under budget so all is good. He finishes on time (or early) and communicates every step of the way. His work is impeccable and all of his subcontractors exceeded my expectations. I have hired them repeatedly and have no intention of stopping. Josh and I went over a list of things that my previous contractor had convinced me were necessary, and he declared most of them were not and gave me cheaper alternatives to fixing issues. As he worked, he was able to call out things that would need fixed and give me timelines on what might happen and when so I could prioritize when to do which projects. (Don't worry previous, horrible contractor is out of business.) I am disabled and wanted my bathroom to be safe, but not to look institutional. Josh had me work on the aesthetics with Alissa, who I now call the color whisperer, and she helped me achieve something far better than my imagination could ever dream. BUT THEN... once the bathroom was framed out, Josh, Brandon, the funniest plumber on the planet, and I met in the space and they literally had me sit on the shower bench and marked the reach of my tiny t-rex arms so that every grab bar and the hand held shower head would be in easy reach and give me the SAFEST bathroom in existence.
