I had my right hip total replacement surgery last Tuesday May 16th. I have received my primary care at UCLA since 2010, and Urology care since 2003. I started initially with Dr. Vighill Orthopedic Sports Medicine Clinic who help me manage without surgery my bilateral knee osteoarthritis with a conservative approach and when he was leaving he referred me to Dr. Nattive who has continued providing excellent care. After she observed an XRay that Dr Brown Orthopedic Sports Clinic had done in 2015 they both noted that in the future my right hips and knees are candidates for replacement. I was referred to several Orthopedic doctors there all very well qualified and board certified. However after meeting with Dr. Zeegen and his suggestion of an anterior approach and the team care post operative I decided to go with him. I am home recovering as treatment plan specifies and the follow up has been excellent. I have Medicare Part A & B which allowed me to have a nurse visits and physical therapy in my home initially through UCLA. I cannot say enough about the promptness, professionalism to my questions to Dr Zeegen and or his staff. WARNING: DO NOT HAVE HIP REPLACEMENT BY DR. ZEEGAN. I am writing this long overdue review with a heavy heart to share the devastating experience my mother had under the care of Dr. Erik Zeegan at UCLA Orthopedics. The total hip replacement surgery performed by Dr. Zeegan has left my mother with PERMANENT brain damage, and has caused immense pain and suffering to both her and our entire family. My mother was 100% independent before her hip replacement surgery, even with her constant hip pain. She was an excellent driver and took care of all her finances, errands and medical appointments. She was a vibrant woman who loved life, travel, was an excellent cook, and had a very active role in the lives of her grandchildren. Now, she lives in the memory care unit of an assisted living facility, is very confused, and requires help with activities of daily living. She has trouble with speech, comprehension, basic math, cannot pay bills, doesn't understand the calendar, can't track time, and was deemed unsafe to drive. She regrets every day that she had hip replacement by Dr. Zeegan at UCLA. She has said repeatedly, "I wish I never did the surgery because it messed up my brain." What should have been a relatively short hospital stay turned into a never-ending nightmare. The surgical procedure was described to us as a routine operation with a short one-night hospital stay. However, the reality was far from that, and started a LIVING HELL. My mother encountered numerous complications following the surgery, leaving her health in a permanently deteriorating state. During surgery, there was excessive blood loss. In addition to that, after surgery, my mother suffered a hematoma which was NOT addressed in a timely fashion, and resulted in more blood loss, requiring 3 units of blood. The day after surgery, she was so pale, weak, and listless and looked like death warmed over. Dr. Zeegan had his fellow and residents see my mother the day after surgery and he did not see her. You would think that the attending physician, knowing about the blood loss and other problems, would want to see the patient rather than push it off to training doctors. But no...Dr. Zeegan did not see her at the most critical junction of her care. Instead of being discharged after one night, my mother endured six long days in the hospital, with no respite from pain. After 6 days at UCLA hospital, my mother was discharged home. She only stayed there for a few hours before she was transported back to the hospital by ambulance. Even with a private duty nurse at home, extreme pain made her unable to even stand up with assistance. The next day, my mother was transferred from UCLA to a skilled nursing facility, where she remained for 32 days. Still in excrutiating pain and very confused, she required so much assistance that we had to hire a private duty nurse to be with her 24/7. Only at her 10 day post-op appointment was it discovered that Dr. Zeegan fractured my mom's femur (thigh bone) DURING surgery. Witnessing her suffer through the physical and emotional agony during this period was nothing short of heart-wrenching. The toll it took on my mother and our family was immeasurable. At that point, due to the broken femur, she had to spend 4 weeks in a wheelchair in the rehab facility, followed by 6 weeks using a walker. The prolonged stay also meant additional financial burden and emotional distress for our family. We spent close to $50,000 in private nursing care to assist her. The most devastating consequence of all has been the PERMANENT cognitive deterioration my mother experienced after the surgery. For a period of time, my mom was able to return to her home, but was never independent again, and required more and more help to the point where she could no longer live in her own home and was moved to assisted living. It is beyond comprehensible that a total hip replacement procedure could lead to such a severe and irreversible decline in her cognitive abilities. We trusted Dr. Zeegan to prioritize my mom's well-being and ensure a successful recovery, but instead, he has left her with a life-altering condition. The pain, suffering, and devastation of my mother and our family cannot be overstated and will haunt us for the rest of our lives. I strongly caution anyone considering Dr. Erik Zeegan at UCLA Orthopedics for surgery TO GO ELSEWHERE. read more

My good friend and her boyfriend both saw Dr. Zeegen for knee replacement surgery. Two years later, both are still in terrible pain. When they've reported this to the Dr., all he says is the equivalent of "hey, I just replace them, I don't do anything for pain". He doesn't FIX the problem! He tells them that "pain is normal, it's just how your body works". So, what? they just have to be in awful pain for the rest of their lives?! the whole point of the surgery was to NOT have to do that. My friends didn't want to put this review up themselves, for fear of the Dr. getting mad at them, but I'm standing up for them. My joint replacement was botched and I lost a lot of blood, requiring transfusions. The intern and residents caring for me did not recognize the problem and Dr. Zeegen was not around. The care at UCLA was terrible. Realize that if you have a surgery at UCLA, training, young and inexperienced doctors will be doing some of your procedure and caring for you afterwards. I wonder who actually did my procedure? Did the intern cut-up my leg? I suggest going to a private orthopedic surgeon who does not use interns to provide the care that the experienced surgeon should do personally. In summary.....my experience with Dr. Zeegen was not good because he lost a lot of blood and I needed transfusions. It is unclear why I bled so much. It is unclear who did my procedure. My results are suboptimal, the UCLA intern care was bad, and Dr. Zeegen delegated the important aftercare to inexperienced interns. I recommend that you go elsewhere. read more

Dr. Zeegen is the hip surgeon to consult! I had an anterior total hip replacement by Dr. Zeegen on February 4, 2021 and feel great. Have had other hip surgeries before and this surgery was very different. Left the hospital with a walker on the same day of surgery, which shocked me the most. My mother was refereed to him by her primary care physician,who called him personally prior to her visit. I fully recovered from my first surgery within approx 8 weeks and I was back to full activity for the 4 weeks leading up to surgery #2 and I expect to do the same or better with my right knee. My left hip was replaced a little over a year ago by Dr. Zeegen. I quickly recovered and have nothing but great things to say about him and his staff. No pain, no issues, guided through the process, all my questions answered, etc. etc. In fact, he did such a good my right hip is totally jealous so I'm making an appointment to replace that one too. The pain is chronic. When I asked Dr. Zeegen earlier whether I should do both, he responded very honestly by saying: "You'll decide that based on how much pain you want to tolerate." I'm now 2 months post op and doing great. Dr. Zeegan did my surgery, but since UCLA is a teaching hospital I know there was a licensed M.D. that did some part of the surgery as well under his supervision. I spent the night at the UCLA Santa Monica Orthopedic Hospital since we live out of town and left the hospital without a walker because I didn't need it. I did use a cane for a few days but was off the major pain medication in three days and off the anti-inflammatory and Tylenol after 6 weeks. I'm now walking 1.5-2 miles per day and doing gentle yoga. My incision site is almost completely smooth--it was stitched under the skin with sutures that dissolved on their own and the skin was matched up and (I think) super-glued together almost perfectly. I'm a bit stiff when I get up after sitting for a while but believe the follow-up PA that this is normal and will go away. I fully expect to be completely functional and pain-free in the next month. I highly recommend Dr. Zeegan and the UCLA Santa Monica hospital. read more

He is friendly and professional, as is his staff, and really answered all of my questions. He personally came to the hospital each day I was there, and he is most understanding. Dr. Zeegen recently did a total knee replacement on my other knee. Wow, is he terrific...in every way. He is a perfectionist, knows what he is doing, and is just simply a total pro. The first knee that he did has incredible movement, and the new knee is coming along as well. Just 4 weeks after surgery, my knee was a delight compared to the pre-surgery pain and mobility issues. Yes, there is still some pain that I manager with a little Tylenol here and there, and I use a cane once in a while, but I am doing great. Dr. Zeegen does not desert the patient after surgery, as some docs do. He has also been the one to see me at each office visit (and not just a PA or nurse). He is personally involved with and dedicated to his patients. That Said, he has a terrific staff That has also quickly addressed my needs and who treat patients as people they care about. I am very pleased with the experience of working with him as well as his office staff, and the Encino Outpatient Surgery Center, where he performed the procedure. I found him to sincere and very interested in my well being throughout my contact with him.
