It is hard to know where to start. We were referred to Dr. Klapper by good friends. Dr. Klapper replaced both my wife's hips a couple of years back and now I have had both my hips replaced by Dr. Klapper in 2025 (6 months apart). Honestly, I feel fortunate to live in Southern California to be able to have Dr. Klapper as my orthopedic surgeon. I was and am aware that he has an outstanding reputation which is why I went to him regarding my hip osteoarthritis. I had a posterior left hip replacement (and will be getting the right hip replaced). He performed a perfect surgery. I had an easy recovery and was immediately walking without any pain on that leg with absolutely no issues. And I had no worries knowing I had one of the best surgeons around. Dr. Klapper has a wonderful interaction with his patients, you can see he likes people. He is also no stick in the mud for sure...he is very outgoing --has a zest for life. Title: Disappointed with Knee Surgery Outcome and Follow-Up Care I had surgery with Dr. Robert Klapper on February 8, 2024, after struggling with knee pain for over 7 years. Based on the doctor's recommendation, I decided to start with my right knee, with the understanding that recovery -- including physical therapy -- would take about 6 to 9 months. Unfortunately, 6 months after surgery, I returned to the doctor with concerns that I wasn't seeing any improvement. I still experienced the same pain, especially when working or using stairs. The doctor noted that more time might be needed for recovery and sent me home. At my next follow-up, another 6 months later, I reported that the situation hadn't changed. I still had the same pain and discomfort in my right knee. Instead of a clear treatment plan, I was told again to give it more time and was asked whether I was ready to schedule surgery for my left knee -- despite no improvement in the first one. I also met another one of Dr. Klapper's patients at my gym who described a similar experience, which confirmed some of my concerns. Now, on September 8, 2025, I am still having difficulty working and climbing stairs. Dr. Klapper has been my orthopedic surgeon for about two decades. He successfully performed arthroscopic surgery on one my knees in my mid-thirties. And recently, I underwent hip replacement surgery under his care. Dr. Klapper is highly confident in his abilities and possesses a superb can-do attitude. He is also personable, positive and gregarious. Most importantly, he is honest. My hip arthritis was diagnosed over 8 years ago. Dr. Klapper never pushed me to get surgery until I was ready. Once my hip pain began interfering with my daily activities is when I decided to take the plunge with his blessing. The surgery per se is the easy part from a patient perspective. The rehab is not. I am an informed patient and had plenty of questions/concerns during my post op. Dr. Klapper and his staff always replied via the CS portal. Kudos to Sandy for being there for me! As others have noted, the only negative is the relatively long office wait. Just plan on waiting at least an hour after your scheduled appointment to actually see him. As I see it, this is small price to pay to have a highly sought surgeon to take care of you. Also, he talks loudly and you can hear he takes his time to get to know each of his patients. He does not rush you through. In the end, we all look for a surgeon who has an excellent track record and possesses good bed side manners. Dr. Klapper has both qualities. There's certain powers at work here, some tangible and easily identified as exceptional, as in matters of interaction with the staff or the doctor's bedside manner. These are easy to identify, both the front desk and the back nurses are kind and well trained and professional. They are focused and pleasurable. It's the intangible elements that are more difficult to define here, existing only in faith, that you know you're in the right place and everything's going to be okay. And it's all of it. The waiting room isn't sterile and mauve with plastic baseboards and a sterile nervousness. Here, sculptures sit catty cornered and framed photos of European lands take you out of the moment of where you are in West Los Angeles and into a broader mind-scape of art and creation. Beautiful waves under lovely blue skies broadcast on a loop from the television and contribute to the ease of atmosphere you find yourself in. Then there's the voice of Dr. Klapper in the back, who presents himself somewhat with the countenance of a country doctor, joyous and sensical, along with a Mensa like quality and eyes that shutter between smile and snipe. With a lower voice going into surgery for my knee replacement he told me "I'm the only one who's touching your knee." And months later post surgery he said "This is why I do this, for people like you." These are words of a wise man and it's a privilege to be his patient. Whether there's more than meets the eye here who knows, but I can say after encountering this physician and having a full knee replacement successfully performed that life seems less agnostic and more of purpose. Dr. Robert Klapper, in my opinion, is the Michelangelo of knee surgery. Making an appointment with Dr. Robert Klapper was the best decision I ever made. I have never waited more than 15 minutes in the waiting area. His staff are kind, courteous, understanding, compassionate and excel at what they do. He examined me, looked at my films and clearly and concisely explained to me what the issue was with my knee, why it was occurring and why he was recommending a Total Knee Replacement for me. The next best decision I ever made was to agree to have Dr. Klapper perform my Total Knee Replacement. From the moment his team greeted me in pre-op, to his visit just before the surgery, I felt I was in the most capable and gifted hands I could possibly be in. Once out of surgery I was up and walking within the hour. I walked several times that day and did a series of stairs with physical therapy.
