I saw Dr. Thordarson about 8 years ago after spending at least that long in pain from a fallen arch. It was a crazy surgery where he took different bits of my leg and foot and created a new arch. I call it my Frankenstein foot, though other than 4 scars, it looks normal. I went to see Dr Thordarson at Ceder Sinai off hospital campus offices for my severely broken foot. While he saw all of the breaks (11 or 12 breaks in my midfoot bones) he only addressed a few of my problems. The few he addressed, 2 out of the 3 he automatically said would have to be fused to be fixed, that there was no other fix, and the 4th reffered to my ankle replacement, that he said was bad, and would wait until it caused pain, and then again would need a fusion. Talking with another Dr not to be named, he wants to try fixing the same foot problems with hardware first, and tack up the ankle replacement to try and extend the life of it rather then fuse any of the joints. Researching the options, I found out that fusing any joint puts stress on the surrounding joints causing future fusions. At the same time, he never addressed any of the other breaks or problems. While I believe he's a good Dr, I believe he's a little old fashioned, and sticking to what he knows. I think that if I end up having to fuse, I think he'd be the right Dr to do it. read more

My question is how can one be abusive to someone they never saw that day? And what is his definition of abuse? Dr.Thordarson is the best! He was willing to do a complicated foot surgery on my mother's right foot after several botched surgeries by other podiatrists and orthopedic surgeons. My Mom is 84 years old and very active, yet spent the last several years unable to walk without significant foot pain. First, Dr T resolved a painful issue on my Mom's left foot due to a screw coming loose from prior bunion surgery (which was misdiagnosed by another podiatrist who kept giving her steroid injections that didn't help). Dr. Thordarson has been my foot and ankle surgeon since 2001. I started with him at USC and followed him when he moved to Cedars-Sinai. Due to a rare nerve disease and autoimmune disease, when I first saw Dr. Thordarson 17 years ago, I was unable to walk. Dr. Thordarson has seen me through 8 successful surgeries and has completely reconstructed both my left foot and left ankle to get and keep me walking. I am disgusted by the people who have written bad reviews. Do not believe them. Some people are just unhappy people and looking for a reason to complain. Some things can't be fixed entirely and they are looking for someone to blame. Arthritis is arthritis. I have pain and problems that cannot be fixed, but that is not due to any fault of a surgeon. I found this Dr by 2 referrals who were my clients. One was an orthopedic surgeon & the other an anesthesiologist. As they put it to me, he is the guy that Dr's go to. So 11 yrs ago he did a bunion & hammertoe surgery on my right foot. As I recall I had pain for 4 days. After that swelling from being on my feet all day at work, at the end of the day. Lasted 4 months. My foot is still perfect. Now I have a new hammertoe on my left foot. So I will be going under the knife with Dr Thordson again. Dr Thordarson and his staff are the BEST! He completed 2 heel surgeries on me. I had surgery at another Dr's office and after 4 months I went to Dr. Thordarson for a 2nd opinion. Dr Thordarson had to remove 7 screws and a steel plate because of a serious e-coli infection that had turned into a blood infection and spread through my body. I had to wait to repair the actual fracture until my blood tests came back clear of any infection. After 8 weeks of antibiotics I was cured of infection and Dr Thordarson did another surgery to repair the fracture. He fixed it with 2 screws instead of a steel plate and 7 screws and he only had to cut me on one side of my foot which minimized the pain dramatically. The first Dr cut me open on both sides. Dr. Thordarson is my hero. He saved my foot and probably my life if the infection would have continued untreated. They were great at managing my pain and they were there to answer any questions I had anytime I had them. I could contact them via phone or email anytime. Dr. David Thordarson is a snake of a surgeon, when he creates a problem or a failed surgery he does a disappearing act. I had a Talonavicular Fusion done back in (December 2012) and everything seemed fine, I did exactly what I was suppose to do, yet I was still in quite a bit of pain!! Yet the purpose of the surgery was to get rid of the pain and Dr. Thordarson kept telling me oh its Arthritis but it took a Podiatrist to find out what was causing my pain which was a (stress fracture). Dr. Thordarson was highly recommended and I also previously saw him at USC. After surgery and wound healed I was still hobbling along in (quite a bit of pain), he ordered an MRI and stated your pain is coming from your screws, I think they are causing 80% of your pain and I think I should remove them. Well in (March 2014) I go under again for the (screw removal) and woke up screaming, somehow no one numbed my foot enough and I woke up and felt like someone had dug in my foot with me being wide awake. I screamed and the surgical team ran over to me and I eventually received a (nerve block) which covered from my knee cap down. What moron didn't make sure my foot was numb enough if your planning on digging out (screws) that were embedded in my bone since 12/2012. I continued to hobble around and Dr. Thordarson played dumb as if he couldn't realize the new (Problem He Had Created). He mentioned he simply could not figure out why I was still in (so much pain), yet he clearly knew. So while playing crazy he suggested I see a fellow Dr. Timothy Charlton I assume to cover for him and not tell the true reason either. So I took it upon myself to find a renowned Foot & Ankle Specialist Dr. Mark Myerson out of Baltimore Maryland at the Foot & Ankle Institute. I spoke to his assistant and forwarded to him my (before & after) films in addition to $100 for the Phone Consult. Dr. Myerson seemed to be very sensitive to my needs and informed me that he would be moving to California by the end of 2014 and I was offered the option to fly to Baltimore Maryland or wait until he arrived to come on board with Cedars Sinai in Los Angeles. Wow, I thought I was in great hands and I was, Dr. Myerson said in the meantime let me recommend a excellent Foot & Ankle Surgeon for you to see in the meantime. I said and who would that be he said "David Thordarson", I said thats who did my surgery and the call oddly got disconnected. I did call him back immediately on his cell phone and he mentioned he would send me some type of (Compound Cream) for some immediate relief, Dr. Myerson informed me the Fusion of your Talonavicular Bone is Fused, but the doctor " Created a New Problem which is by fusing your joint has put pressure on the joint directly next to it". Well after the renowned Mark Myerson found out his potential Business Partner goofed on my surgery he disappeared like a ghost, he declined to send the (Compound Cream) and much to my surprise he NEVER EVER MADE IT TO CELEBRITY HOSPITAL TO THE STARS CEDARS SINAI IN LOS ANGELES, CA. Wow, I wonder if the failed surgery interfered in his up and coming PROFITS WITH DAVID THORDARSON. Well, we're now into November 2016 and Dr. Mark Myerson of Foot & Ankle Institute in Baltimore Maryland oddly decided not to join the practice of David Thordarson that he so highly recommended. I wonder how either physician can even sleep at night to offer a Compound Cream and then say the hell with it, you wonder why either Dr. David Thordarson or Dr. Mark Myerson took that HIPPOCRATIC OATH? Sadly my reality is still acute pain and FAILED FUSION HAS TOTALLY THROWN MY GAIT OFF AND THEREFORE THROWS YOUR BACK COMPLETELY OFF. Dr. Thordarson is now a foot doctor to the Stars since Cedars is border line Beverly Hills, but he totally has dismissed the huge mistake he make on my foot and has disappeared like a SNAKE AND WILL NOT SEE ME FOR ANY FOLLOW VISITS. And he has the audacity to have a hair up his ass and my gait is significantly changed for life. They BOTH TOOK THE COWARD AND SNAKE APPROACH TO SLITHER AWAY, but I haven't forgotten their horrific manners. Is Dr. Mark Myerson just waiting for time to lapse before joining Cedars Sinai in Los Angeles as planned in 2014. This is our Medical Field Folks and I was taught that (Specialist) are held to a higher standard, but just not FOOT AND ANKLE SPECIALTY. It is rare to find an orthopaedic surgeon who deals soley with foot and ankle disorders etc. Most surgeons who deal with diseases of the foot and ankle specialize in other areas of orthopaedic surgery however, Dr. Thordarson is one of the very few ortho's who does specialize in the foot and ankle. He's well known throughout the world. He deals with all types of foot and ankle issues and is very very good with complex cases as well as redos when things have gone wrong with another surgeon/podiatrist. Most ortho's are somewhat cold and too the point. Dr. Thordarson is a very calm, caring and compassionate man. He is very communicative and helpful. Dr Thordorson had done a very simple bunionectomy 15 months ago on my right foot. I did the same surgery 17 years ago and the results was far more better and easier than what he did a year ago on my other bunion. After surgery I noticed my toe was far open between the big toe and the second toe, he kept telling me it will go back to normal. He asked me to tape my toes together for few months so my big toe will go back to it's normal position. after few months I started to have pain on my ankle, there was a big bump on my joint where my toe is (bigger than my bunion) and I could not straighten my knee either. He treated me twice with steroid injections after noticing there were lot of inflammation around my ankle and my toe because of surgery. He asked me to come again for more steroid injection but I did not feel comfortable to take the injection any more. I was on Advil and some pain killer for a while based on his prescription. Since I always was athletic I really pushed myself to do PT as much as possible. But that did not helped my pain and flexibility. Now there is a big bump right on my joint where my toe is ,my toe has no flexibility, and it's wide open between my big toe and second toe, to the point that I can't wear any thong sandal anymore because it just comes off my foot. Right now is 15 months pass and I still have a lot of pain and swollen, my knee also is giving me a lot of problem because of compensation and more importantly my right foot (the recent bunionectomy) is now almost one size bigger than my left, also if I wear a close shoe, sometimes my third toe rolls in and I can't straighten it. I don't know what he has done to my foot?? I am extremely unhappy with his work specially I recently found out that he is specialize on ankle surgery, I have no idea why is he practicing for bunionectomy. I tried to stop few of my friends to go to him for the same problem. I have seen two other doctor for opinions they both told me that he overdid to straighten my toe and another surgery is too risky. Bottom line I am in much more pain and discomfort than before he did the surgery, and I can not anymore wear just any shoes. My choices with wearing shoes is very limited now. read more

If you're looking for a miracle for your foot, you came to the right place in finding Dr. Thordarson. I had a previous bunionectomy from another surgeon at a different hospital that had complications & needed to be corrected. I heard that Dr. Charlton & Dr. Thordarson are good with revisions. I saw Dr. Charlton first & he immediately noticed I had hypermobility, which no previous specialist had ever brought up. This led me to a genetics test that revealed an extremely rare connective tissue disorder. Connective tissue problems can cause hypermobility, so he was very astute in picking that up right away. Suddenly all my health issues connected & made sense, & now I know how to manage my symptoms better. I am grateful to him for that-it's changed my life, just a year later. I later saw Dr. Thordarson, & he was the first foot surgeon who was confident about being able to correct the previous work. I was using a cane by that time. I'm in my early 40s & never needed a cane before the previous bunionectomy, so it was disappointing that I needed a device & ended up even worse than before the surgery. It felt like a burden to drag my foot along wherever I went, so I was walking less & less. I was starting to lose hope & thought I'd probably be disabled for life. I still had to keep my foot elevated 18 mos. post-op & the pain was significant. I'd been to 5 foot surgeons before Dr. Thordarson, & he could see in the first visit that I needed a more aggressive procedure with additional hardware. The first surgeon had just used one large screw, which failed to keep the bunion from coming back about 8 months later. Dr. Thordarson used about 6 smaller screws & one plate, which ended up working out perfectly. He's had a lot of experience with revision bunionectomies & he knew what he was doing. I felt my concerns were heard & understood & taken seriously, then later addressed as promised. I was shocked that I was able to get rid of my crutches & cane just a day after Dr. Thordarson's surgery. I should mention that in my previous surgery elsewhere, I was wheeling myself around on a rollable desk chair for the first week, then I had to use crutches for nearly four months. Despite Dr. Thordarson's work being more complex & involved, my recovery time was significantly less. Everything about the recovery process was smooth & easy. Even the follow-up visits were efficient yet informative. When I had an email question, I'd get an answer from his staff who would relay Dr. Thordarson's message to me within a day. However, the recovery was so straightforward (as straight as my foot now is!) that I rarely needed to get in touch. Speaking of the straightness of my foot, I had no aesthetic expectations. I didn't expect to ever walk in heels again. I was beyond that. I just wanted to be able to walk on my own again, walk more than a block, & leave that cane stored in the garage where it belongs. Well, the foot couldn't be more straight now. I've never seen a straighter foot in my life. It was so jagged & at such an extreme angle before the surgery that a bone was hitting a nerve & causing three of my toes to go numb after 5-10 minutes of walking, which meant I had to rest every 5-10 minutes. That numbness is gone. I can finally place my foot flat on the ground instead of walking on the outer edge, which has helped my hips become more even & less painful, & is also making me less prone to previously frequent ankle sprains. After the procedure with Dr. Thordarson, I asked him if he could remove the hardware once the bones had healed. He accommodated my schedule close to the holidays & removed all the hardware about 6 weeks ago. I am now walking as quickly as I can ever remember walking, even as a teenager! I was even able to wear heels & take dance classes again just a month after surgery. One more miracle has to do with the fact that I had problems with moving my big toe off the ground before Dr. Thordarson's surgery. My right big toe has a lot of flexibility, but the left big toe with the bunion was stuck at about a 12 degree angle. The right foot is at a 48 degree angle. Just 6 weeks after Dr. Thordarson removed the hardware, my left foot is already at a 42 degree angle, which is way beyond my or my physical therapists' expectations. And with more recovery time that left big toe could be moving as much as the right--which it never has before in my life. Gratitude alone doesn't express how much this brilliant, capable surgeon's work has changed my life. Being able to walk, dance, stand on my toes, feel the ground beneath my foot, wear heels, & get full sensation back after half a lifetime of problems is an immeasurable good deed. Surviving a crush injury to both feet (as well as other injuries) turned out to be the easy part, it's everything that came after that seemed unsurvivable: clinical depression, chronic pain, multiple surgeries, the overarching massive change to my life. Dr. Thordarson recognizes and understands how these factors impact my life; therefore, he takes a holistic approach in his treatment of my complex case. It's more than his surgical skill that makes Dr, Thordarson an outstanding doctor; it's his proverbial bedside manner, as well. WOW !! I have read a few bad reviews and I am truly sorry if that was the case. All I can say is, I work in healthcare and know that Doctors are just like every other person on the planet. They have good days, great days and bad days and are as human as the next person. That being said, I had ankle and heel reconstruction surgery with Dr. Thordarson, this was after I went to UCLA and met with a Doctor who's attitude made me think the pain was better to deal with. I researched and read an article on the 28 Doctors who Doctors go to and Dr. Thordarson was number on in Ortho... period. I met with him, he looked at a MRI from another institution which he didn't have to, he could have made me waste more time by sticking to protocols and retaking an MRI from where he was, then delay the process. He looked at the issue, told me what was wrong, told me the fix and away we went. The surgery was about 2 and a half hours, I came out and hopped around for three weeks on crutches, then was walking in flip flops in three weeks, though Dr. Thrordarson said it would be maybe two months. He was impressed with his own work. I had a number of follow up appointments with Dr. Thordarson and I never had an issue contacting him or his staff. He probably does not answer the phone directly because, that what his staff is for. It's hard to answer phones and do top notch surgery.. (ya think?) Many Doctors who I show my scars to comment that the work is clean and professional and when I say who did it, they all go.. "Okay, that's why it looks so good." A bit of advice to anyone going for surgery and seeking out medical assistance ... DO YOUR RESEARCH... if your insurance covers an EXPERT ... USE THEM. Not all Docs are the same. Find out who is the best in their field. Contact them and no matter how sick or stressed or overwhelmed you feel, BE NICE. It goes a long way with health care personnel who have heard every whine and gripe there is from people who have probably had way worse that what you might be dealing with. read more

Dr Thordarson performed my bunion surgery. From my first visit in his office, he and his staff were professional, kind, and thoughtful. He treated me as an individual, tailoring his recommendations and surgical technique to my anatomy and activities. He is unbelievably intelligent and knowledgeable in his field. Communication was excellent. Whenever I had a question or concern, my phone calls were returned in a timely fashion. I am a medical professional myself, and cannot recommend Dr. Thordarson more enthusiastically. read more
