I had a total knee replacement with Dr Ehrhart just after my 50th birthday in May. I am a very active person---I've spent my adulthood skiing, climbing, mountaineering, and biking, much of which I did right up until surgery. While Dr Ehrhart seems to have a good reputation, the surgery did not go well. At the two week follow-up, I told Dr Erhart my pain was significant and I wasn't gaining much range-of-motion. I told him essentially the same thing at my two month follow-up. In both cases he suggested everything was fine. Finally at my four month follow-up his PA took an xray and it was clear the implant was put in incorrectly and/or moved immediately after surgery. I had to have a complete revision surgery in January. Sometimes things just don't go right, I get that. But, Dr Ehrhart didn't really acknowledge my concerns after the surgery, so I lived with substantial pain and pushed very hard to increase range-of-motion for months on a knee that just wasn't going to improve. I did the revision surgery with a different surgeon and have been working hard on rehab yet again. Its going okay, but I'm still waiting to determine what the long-term will look like. read more

I highly recommend Dr. Ehrhart! I am two weeks post partial knee replacement and I am so happy with my progress! He spent time with me prior to surgery answering my questions and his team is very professional! He uses robotic assist in his procedures which ensures only the portions of bone that is damaged is removed. The precision of this process makes implant placement and recovery so much better! The nurses and anesthesiologist at Providence St.John's put me at ease the morning of surgery and made the whole experience at the hospital very pleasant. read more

I can say that having Dr Ehrhart perform knee replacement surgery was absolutely the worst decision I've ever made. Post surgery my leg was crooked and the overall outcome was appalling. After doing all the rehab I was in more pain than before the surgery. Less than a year later I had to have the surgery done again. There were so many problems with Ehrhart's effort I'll never be able to walk very well. Essentially this man crippled me. One thing I should add is that after the second surgery I got a pulmonary embolism which was less than ideal. Thanks for all that Ehrhart. Perhaps it's time to retire and not risk destroying anyone else's quality of life. read more

The Doctor and his staff have been very responsive since my surgery. I was having more prolonged pain than hoped, and his PA took time to call and discuss the situation, ensuring I had enough meds to get through the weekend. I'm only a week in, so I can't speak to the final outcome of my new knee, but to date I have been happy with their responsiveness and the care I have received, to include the hospital staff which were amazing. read more

I filed a complaint about Dr Ehrhart through Kerlan-Jobe. He hadn't put his "after visit notes" up. He put them up shortly after I filed the complaint. The ENTIRE report was a lie. I can't believe he can get away from this. Remember when I mentioned that he threw my mental illness up and told me 3X to see a psychiatrist? His notes said I was opiat dependent. He said I told him I took 6 percoset's a day. NO, I told him the script says I can, but I only take 2 maybe 3. My pain mgmt. Dr. is not concerned. I was there for an injection on my knee on Thursday and asked for a drug test. I told him I want to protect him. He (My pain mgmt Dr.) said he is not at the least concerned about his report. I asked him to randomly perform drug test on me and he laughed. He said I'm the only patient he has that asks to be drug tested. He said he would. When I read his notes, I immediately responded and called him out, and reminded him of what was really said and done while I wasted my time with him. It was bad enough to basically tell me my pain is all in my head but then to write that I am dependent on drugs. Yeah, this is not going to end well for him. read more

Dr. Earhart performed partial knee replacement on me. After a year of suffering much pain and numerous return visits with no solution, I went to USC. Surgery was performed and it was discovered that a poor job had been done the first . A part of the replacement was not glued in correctly and slipping, hence the pain, Also, cement was found loose in my joint. My USC doctor asked many questions about who had done my initial surgery because it was evident that care had not been taken. His words, "You have to be a little OCD when doing this surgery." My doctor at USC subsequently wrote Dr. Earhart to let him know what happened. What a long painful journey. Thank heavens I'm doing great now. I hope this helps others. read more

Dr. Ehrhart may be a fine surgeon, but my experience with his affect and care for his patients shows only arrogance and dismissiveness, and in my case, led to almost two years of avoidable pain. Dr. Ehrhart performed a hip replacement on me in early 2017. Since that time, I experienced relentless pain, despite following all post op instructions, undergoing a series of cortisone injections, and diligently doing physical therapy. At each office visit spaced about three months apart, Dr. Ehrhart wavered on a diagnosis for the cause of pain, angrily told me either that I had no pain, that the pain was related to my attitude, or that I would always have the pain. He offered only more cortisone shots. During an office visit a year post op, Dr. Ehrhart spit out, his face only inches from mine, that I was lucky not to be in a wheelchair, and that he could do nothing more for me, except another cortisone shot in a few months. I was frustrated, angry, and sad. Determined to find an answer or even a diagnosis, I decided to obtain a second opinion through UCLA orthopedics. After getting an MRI, an action Dr. Ehrhart never suggested, the UCLA doctor found that I had a traumatic necrosis and that surgery was necessary to relieve my pain. The subsequent surgical pathology report showed that I had both the necrosis and a traumatic neuroma, both of which was addressed through a relatively simple outpatient procedure. If Dr. Ehrhart had decided to take my complaints seriously and showed only a bit of professionalism curiosity, I could have avoided over a year of unnecessary pain and cortisone injections. Because of this, I believed it was incumbent upon me to share my experience so that others could avoid this kind of situation. read more

I don't know where to begin. The motivation for my writing a review is the last negative one I read regarding Kevin Ehrhart. That person probably has anger issues, because so much of what he writes just can't be true. Kevin Ehrhart is a world class surgeon with a world class great personality. He has replaced both of my knees and both of my hips over a ten year period. All of the surgeries were total successes and he has taken the time to treat all of my concerns before and after with kindness and respect. I saw him for the first time in a few years recently and after having x rays done told me I'll never wear them out. I'm 72 and will try to live long enough to prove him wrong. I was a professional athlete many years ago and destroyed my body. I was in great pain for many years. My knees and hips are pain free now and I have no limitations. There were no complications or infections after the surgeries and all of them allowed me to drive two weeks after surgery even though most other people I know who used other surgeons took three times as long to recover. When I read a review of a surgeon and it includes reading material as part of the review I have to wonder about their priorities. Waiting for a good doctor is part of the package. I don't want to choose a doctor because they stay on schedule, because that means they would leave me with questions unanswered for sake of a clock. I was taught good things take time. To make it simple I need a shoulder replaced and if Doctor Ehrhart replaces shoulder s I'm going to fight to make him my doctor. read more

Dr Ehrhart replaced my knee two and half years ago and made such a mess of it that I had to have it replaced by another surgeon less than a year later. Ehrhart didn't even manage to put my leg back together so it was straight! On the bright side it did get a lot of laughs from friends and colleagues. I had a bad knee before Ehrhart butchered me and now after two replacements it's worse than it was before I started. Dr. Ehrhart did my total knee replacement surgery, and the outcome has been excellent, I'm 59 years old, and had significant arthritis from an old 1970's meniscus removal that made it difficult to walk my dogs around the block. Now, over a year later, my knee feels as it did prior to my original injury in 1974, and I can run, hike, snowboard, bike, etc. with no pain. Everyone at SMOG was friendly and professional, and I found Dr. Ehrhart great to interact with every time I met with him. He took the time to listen to my questions and provided answers tailored to my rehab plan which involved pushing my new knee to allow return to work in less than a week, with vigorous training and less discomfort than anticipated for 2 - 3 months after surgery. I am a highly unsatisfied patient of Dr. Kevin Ehrhart at Santa Monica Orthopedic Group. I begin seeing Ehrhart about one year ago for knee pain. Ehrhart fits the reputation to a tee of the type of doctor who is arrogant, emotionless and unhappy. He is not a people person. While he is in his early 60s and clearly knowledgeable, his knowledge does not appear to be any better than alternative doctors in the area who have the people skills that Ehrhart sorely lacks. I will try to summarize the following key problems with Ehrhart: 1. He overbooks his calendar so the average waiting time to see him is usually an hour. When he finally sees you, he either gives an emotionless apology or no apology at all. 2. He refuses to talk to patients over the phone. In order to speak with him, one needs to make an appointment which requires at least an hour of waiting and costs money. 3. Often Dr. Ehrhart will not even see the patient, but instead Ric Campbell, Dr. Ehrhart's "physician assistant", who does not have a medical degree, will see the patient instead. Ric Campbell has on several occasions given me medical information that has contradicted what Dr. Ehrhart has told me. 4. He is either lazy or overworked or both. I first met with Dr. Ehrhart about a year ago, and he didn't realize a very obvious cause of my knee pain until a follow-up visit almost six months later. 5. The person who answers his phone, Patricia (not to be confused with his lovely office manager Ginger), is incompetent. She is incredibly difficult to reach and it can literally take days for her to come back to you. She is not very friendly and generally a hassle to deal with. 6. Dealing with Dr. Ehrhart's office is incredibly laborsome. His staff is lazy. It often takes them weeks (or even months) to do things that should only take a doctor's office a day or two. For example, it literally took them two months to get an approval from my insurance company for a certain medication for pain. The magnitude of the delay was exacerbated by Dr. Ehrhart deciding to take vacation without addressing my medication before he left. 7. He is bitter. As an orthopedic surgeon in his 60s, Dr. Ehrhart is a bitter man who seems to have had enough of his job. 8. Parking is very expensive. It costs approximately $9-10 per hour t o park in the medical building and the parking is billed every 15 minutes. Over the last year, I've made a significant financial, time and emotional investment into Dr. Kevin Ehrhart and the return on that investment has been terrible. My knee pain has not changed since seeing him. Dealing with his office has been incredibly stressful. My advice to anyone looking for an orthopedist is to look for someone else. read more

I completely disagree with Ben F. I recently underwent a total hip replacement with Dr. Erhart in December 2012. I was so relieved to have found him. I had been dealing with I diagnosed hip dysplasia for o rr seven years. I was referred to Dr. Erhart through a friend of mine that had a knee replacement with him. We both play tennis together and she said he had her back on the court in 8 weeks. So I went to see him. I found his bedside manner very friendly. Actually he has a funny personality and made me feel comfortanle and heard. He spent quite a long time going over my MRI's my exrays and previous surgery. He explained to me everything there was to know about the surgery. I felt very comfortable. He is rated one of the top doctors in his field. I have had several surgeries in the past and something that stands out for me with Dr. Erhart was the day of surgery . It has been my experience for the do for to be the last one in the operating room, but not Dr. Erhart he was there the whole time I was being prepped and I could tell he was preparing himself. I felt very confident and he did a beautiful job with my new hip. My scar is minimal and I feel great! Anyway I won't go into every detail but I would like to address some other concerns that Ben experienced. I have been to his office 5 times and the longest I have waited is 30minutes. This is not unusual, I don't think I've ever gone quickly in to an appointment with a doctor. A wait is to be expected. I always get a return phone call from Patricia, I even recently had her call me back at 7 pm, long after she should have been home. She said she didn't want to make me wait until the next day! I had my six week post op and am so thrilled to know that I can retur To the gym and all of my previous activities including tennis . I would recommend Dr. Erhart many times over. I was so disappointed with this so called Dr. Who should retire immediately. I came with my MRI's and X-Rays of my hips and left knee from a fall. He told me I have a little tendinitis in my right hip. I asked " What do I do, I'm in so much pain. He said there's nothing really but I do have a cortisone shot, do you want it? I said YES if it will help. He had me lay on the table on my left side and pulled down my pants. I was totally exposed and he received a phone call so he walked out and left the door open where my bottom was facing the door for everyone to see. I pulled up my pants and he came in 5 mins later only to say he was sorry he left the door open. He gave me the shot and I was on my way. I was still in so much pain that I went to Dr. Todd Lanman who immediately told me " Your bone on bone in both hips and you have a torn minuscus on your left knee. It's crazy to me that Dr's really don't know what there doing and all they want to do is charge your insurance. He will get -50 stars from me...ASSHOLE!!! read more

I had meniscus surgery with Dr, Ehrhart and had excellent results. Both knees done 3 months apart. Now, 15 years later, I had a partial knee replacement. I am so appreciative of the great team and their availability- Patricia, Ric & DrE. The follow thru with arranging g home health nurse & PT at home was seamless. I had an ACL rupture 18 years ago in a skiing accident. I was a professional ski guide in Switzerland and a pro footballer in Australia. I went to see Kevin and had a straight patella graft. My knees were tight due to muscle mass and this procedure made it even tighter. I am glad it did. Over the years the knee loosens up and is still perfect. I dropped the brace after 6 months and never looked back. He told me then 50% was the surgery and 50% what you do afterwards. I worked hard and got back into triathlons, riding and running. I'm 52 now and my knee is fantastic. As a sports related veterinarian (equine and canine) I knew something about the knee and its incredible complexity. Kevin was patient, kind, caring, very attentive, and most of all he was able to debate the merits of the various procedures and discuss the latest research. The surgery went well then and I have been back recently. Instead of rushing into surgery he recommended exercise and come back. I'm back, its much improved but not 100%. He's the only guy I will have touch my knee. My daughter is 16 and plays club soccer and today her MRI showed an ACL rupture. Kevin is the guy I am calling tomorrow. He's trustworthy, considerate and highly knowledgeable as well as being a great surgeon. read more

I went to Dr. Ehrhart because I had a huge Baker's cyst behind my knee. He assured me that a partial knee replacement would take care of it. It did not. I went to his office numerous times because I was experiencing pain and the cyst was enormous. He said my body just didn't act like other bodies. I knew something was wrong. Frustrated, I researched other doctors and found Dr. Paul Gilbert at USC. Thank heavens! Dr. Gilbert first scoped my knee to try to figure out where the pain and inflammation were coming from. Finally, he did another surgery and opened up the whole knee! Dr. Gilbert discovered that Dr. Ehrhart had not cemented in part of the replacement correctly. I was experiencing pain from loose part slipping in and out, and inflammation from the cement fragments. He replaced the faulty part, and the cyst and pain went away immediately! Dr. Gibert told me you have to be a bit OCD when you do this surgery. I wish Dr. Ehrhart had been! Dr. Gilbert sent Dr. Ehrhart a letter and pictures. He has not heard back from Dr. Ehrhart, and neither have I. It has been a long journey and 3 surgeries. Dr. Gilbert has done a partial replacement on my other knee and my husband's hip . Kevin Ehrhart did a total knee replacement on my right leg back in 2009 and the same for my left leg in January 2016. I met with several surgeons regarding a total knee replacement. I live an hour away from Santa Monica but heard about this group and met with Kevin. I liked him from the first day, Kevin spent all the time I needed and I had lots of questions. I indicated that I wanted to get back to my active life as soon as possible and Kevin mapped out a plan and said if I was willing to make the effort on the rehab end, it was attainable. I was 61 years old in 2009, play a lot of golf but by no means a super fit athlete. Everything went as planned and I will be the first to tell you total knee replacements are not fun. It is painful and at times frustrating but with the right attitude, you should have the same positive results that I have now had....twice. I was back playing golf in less than 8 weeks and am on target for the same this time. All doctor have busy practices these days and I saw several complaints about wait times. In all fairness, early on I did experience a bit more time in the waiting room than I liked but instead of complaining I did something about it. With some advance planning, I made all my subsequent visits early in the morning, usually between 8:30-9:30 and it solved that problem. It is like teeing off to play golf at 11:00 AM or 7:00 AM. One is a 4 hours round and the other is 5+ hours. I want to specifically give a shout out to Cheryl, Tony, Ric, Katherine and of course, Kevin. These are good people and I know first hand how they helped me regain the quality of life that I now have. Just remember, you will get out of it as much as you are prepared to invest. The most important qualification for a surgeon is that he or she is a master at surgery, the rest is much less important, but Dr. Ehrhart is also great at explaining the surgery, answering questions, and providing followup. I had a total knee replacement 2 weeks ago, and am already walking (around the house and a bit outside) with no walker or cane, and have had virtually no pain (never needed narcotics in or out of the hospital). I asked a doctor friend of mine why she thought I had no pain and a great recovery and she explained that really good surgeons are very good at carefully minimizing tissue damage as they operate, not just getting the new joint in right. I'm so relieved and pleased with my outcome that I'm suggesting my relative from out of state have her surgery here with Dr. Ehrhart. Staff Patricia, Tony, and PA Rick were all fantastic too. read more

Dr. Ehrhart is worth waiting to see. He is an expert hip doctor and is thorough with his explanation. He is worth waiting for. HOWEVER, do be prepared to pay a facility fee charge to St. John's Hospital. In light of this, get ALL necessary xrays and MRI's done elsewhere and bring them in. My insurance was charged a $900 facility fee because I had an Xray! It was a very expensive visit! read more

I have been to multiple doctors and finally, finally found Dr. Ehrhart. Amazing, smart, caring, listens and reviews all possibilities before making a medical decision. I have to say, "he is simply the BEST." I had to follow my heart and keep moving forward with knee pain and he is the only one willing to make specific challenges before surgery. This sports oath practice I have used more than several occasions. Every time regardless of what doctor you see it is first rate, great staff. Ok sometimes you wait a few more mins to see your doctor but hey its a busy practice, parking you pay for the convenience.You can park on the street if you want.I was there yesterday Paul was great got me comfy then I meet A Dr Natasha,lovely lady she listened looked at X-rays did a quick pre up then Dr Kevin Ehrhart MD did his thing I came out much better than when I entered. I am totally pleased with my experience with Dr. Ehrhart and my hip replacement surgery. He was always on time and i dont beleive i ever waited more than 20 mins for any visit. the office staff was always available and more than helpful. Everything was explained at least twice. the hospital stay was a very calm experience because DR. Ehrhart had explained it all to me and there were no surprises. I saw the DR. twice during check in and pre-op. he was in the OR to greet me and point out what was about to take place. all went well and i was up and walking the next day. I saw DR. Ehrhart the day after the surgery and again before discharge . Went to the post op visit one week later and was rechecked again by DR. Ehrhart. i am so happy with everything that happened and the best is that i am pain free and limp free and feel great. I would recommend DR. Ehrhart to anyone. read more

I have known Kevin Ehrhart for over 30 years, and there isn't an orthopedic surgeon that I would recommend more highly than this compassionate and highly skilled surgeon. Due to osteoarthritis, I have had to have three hip replacements. When Dr. Ehrhart did my first one in my mid forties, he said it would last for approximately 15 years - he was right on! He has since replaced that same hip and a year later replaced my other hip, both time the surgery and recovery were a breeze. I hear all sorts of nightmares about people who have had problems with the prosthesis after a joint replacement, but I have never experienced one single problem and I attribute that to Dr. Ehrhart's handiwork. Recently, I made the mistake of going to another surgeon who was located closer to my home, to have my knee replaced. Big mistake! From the onset of the joint replacement, I was unable to fully extend my knee. The surgeon who did the replacement, blamed it on me by saying that I hadn't done enough P/T, my body formed excessive scar tissue, etc., etc., he refused to take any responsibility or to fix the problem as he told me "There is absolutely nothing that can be done, there is no surgery to fix this sort of problem". I went to see Kevin Ehrhart, he reviewed the x-rays of my knee and expressed a concern about the angle of the tibial component. Not one to rush into surgery, Kevin took a conservative approach. He had me wear a brace on my leg and asked that I continue P/T. On my next visit, since the extension had not improved he recommended a manipulation. During the manipulation, he was still unable to straighten the knee. After a discussion in his office, I asked him to go in to the knee and see what he could do. The surgery was three weeks ago, He adjusted the angle of the tibial component and I was able to straighten my leg when I awoke, he even cleaned up the previous scar and made the new one less noticeable. Dr. Ehrhart didn't have to do what he did, he could have just dismissed me as he wasn't the doctor who had done the original surgery - but he didn't because he is the consummate professional doctor, he saw a patient with a need, he thought he could fix the problem and he did. A previous reviewer said that the wait times in Dr. Ehrhart's office are too long. Personally, I would wait all day to see the best hip and knee doctor in Los Angeles, he's absolutely worth it! read more

Being a patient of Dr.Ehrhart was the greatest experience ever. Both my knees were in bad shape ,but the right knee had been severed in several areas in 1972 from a automobile accident plus it was completely bowlegged from Arthritis It was a real challenge, Dr. Ehrhart explained all the issues I would face, so I was not in the dark about the pain and length of time on the healing process especially on the right leg. First surgery was September 2014 on the left leg and the. second was April 2015. I must say he is a amazing doctor and truly a God sent . By July 2015 I was able to retire my cane and walker.
