5 stars for the actual work. Erik and Eden came out to my house last month to do some trimming of nubs and dead wood on our trees and shrubs. Everything looks great! Erik even talked me through the correct way to trim, so we can keep up with the shrub work. He threw some of the nub-cuts in for free and even cleared our roof and gutters -- for free (granted, this was with a blower and ended up being messy, but they managed to clean it up pretty well). 3 stars for all the other things you need to do to run a business. Maybe I managed to catch them on a couple of bad days, but they were late and didn't call both for the estimate and the day of work. For the estimate, they couldn't make it for a few hours, so I pushed it a day. For the work, I called them about 45 minutes after the end of the time range they'd given me, and they were 3 minutes away from my house -- with reasons for being late. I also called once to set up the work appointment, and Erik couldn't talk to me because he was tired. A little strange, but I went ahead and hired them, and I'm glad I did. They're interesting people, they love trees, and they definitely know how to take care of them better than whoever hacked up ours -- and a lot of others in our neighborhood -- before we arrived. read more

I had Erik come out a second time (see my previous review on 7/10/08) to do a pretty major reduction and pruning job on two cherry trees and an apple tree in my front yard. The trees hadn't been pruned in at least 7 years and they were starting to encroach upon the power and cable lines coming to the house from the street. It also seemed like the fruit production was less than optimal on the apple tree and I was worried about the weight on some of the branches of the cherry trees. They definitely needed some TLC.... Anyway, Erik and one of his main guys (the tree whisperer aka Justin) were able to come out, give me a quote, and then get started on the project the very next day. It took all afternoon and into the evening for them to do the pruning work. Then, towards the end, a *huge* cleanup crew arrived (around 6 people) and they hauled, chipped, and swept up what appeared to be half a dump-truck's worth of debris. I honestly think my yard and my neighbors yard are cleaner now than before they started. Needless to say, I think Erik & co. did an excellent job. The fruit trees now have a nice and balanced shape to them and the power lines have plenty of clearance. I'm really looking forward to seeing how they fill out over the next year or two. I don't expect the fruit production to be that great this summer, but next year.... well, it should be worth the wait. :) The most important thing though, is that I felt comfortable letting them work on my precious trees even as I watched large branches being lopped off with a chain saw. Justin did most of the pruning work on this job and he spent a lot of time explaining what was going to happen beforehand. I can tell that he really knows his stuff and he has a deep respect and appreciation for the beautiful trees we all enjoy in the pacific NW. I think Scott R's review on Erik Nye, "Tree Guy", is spot on. Erik is passionate when it comes to trees. I appreciate his attention to details and doing things right. I'm giving him 4 stars because the day the crew came out, their power equipment broke. Rather than stopping and scheduling for the next day, the guys tried to finish through with hand tools. We weren't happy about the results and ended up calling Erik to fix the project. I was concerned that he may not agree, but Erik was quick to come out to see, he immediately noticed the problems and put his top guys on it (with power tools). And he made sure that the job was done to our satisfaction. It took a little longer than we scheduled. In the end, we got good work. And they did an exceptional job with the clean-up. read more

I highly recomment Erik and his crew. I hired him to clean up an old maple tree that had been topped and had developed some dangerously heavy branches hanging over my house. His "tree whisperer" did a fabulous job by saving and beautifying the tree and saving my house from imminent danger. They also removed several old trees and shrubs that had not been cared for by the previous owners. Erik and his guys went above and beyond the original bid/proposal that we agreed upon. The bid was $5000 for removal/grinding of 5 large stumps (each about 3.5 ft diameter) and removal of all blackberries and ivy in my backyard. It took 3 long days with 3 guys. In the end they did all that was discussed in the bid, they hauled away all the debris, they rented a rototiller and evened out all the soil, they took care of and buried dog poop piles, they edged a strip of grass, and washed debris off the windows. When Erik gave me the bid, he said he does 110% of the bid, and he kept to his word. These guys do great work, the only thing you need to provide is flexibility...They work on their own schedule (worked each night until dark). Erik is free-spirited, he will want to say a prayer over the stumps at the beginning of the job. In addition, if he wants to rent machinery or buy new tools, he will ask for a small fraction of the cash at the end of the work day to help offset expenses. Which is not a big deal, because at that point he had worked way more than the meager amount of cash he was asking for. If you are open-minded and want quality work, these guys will do the trick. read more

I found Erik and Eden on Yelp a few weeks ago. I had several trees and a bunch of Junipers to be removed. Erik and his crew did an amazing job. They all worked extremely hard and finished the job quickly. After they finished removing all the trees, they got everything cleaned up and even trimmed a few other shrubs around the yard. I had them grind down the roots of one of the big trees, and to my pleasant surprise, they ended up grinding down all of the smaller trunks as well. Anybody who says that Erik is more than just a Tree Guy is right--he's an experience!! He and his associates took down 7 huge, dead trees in our side yard with style, compassion (the lowering of the largest involved the invocations of a tree shaman and blessings), and the most amazingly great bid you can imagine. Once the trees were down, he chopped them into a mountain of firewood that we're still enjoying. As well as the stories from that portentious day--he and his crew pulled up in a converted disabilities vehicle, in which they were raising 6 baby crows. Erik and his crew just completed a tough tree removal job and did a great job. Initially, we did not want to cut down the tree. Erik was very helpful in trying to save a 100ft gorgeous cedar. When we discovered tree rot from termites and the roots in the garage, we had no choice. Erik's arborist background was helpful. Even recommended a type of maple to replace the cedar While it took about a week and 1/2 to remove the tree from a tough spot above our garage, Erik's crew helped out in other areas by trimming a couple of other trees on our property at no additional cost. He provided great service at a reasonable cost. His pricing is very reasonable. Even left us some chopped wood. If he can also include mulch removal in his service (from all the trunk grinding) that would be great. Erik may also want to hook up with tree planting to complement his removal service given his team's arborist background Overall very pleased with the job he did and we are calling his company back to trim our hedges. Great service. I called on a Saturday for a quote and Eric came out within a couple hours. He said they could do the work Monday and showed up with a crew early Monday morning. They pruned an apple tree and cleared a lot of blackberries out of bushes, which was the agreed work, but also pruned another small tree and cleaned up some of the bushes while they were at it. read more

We used Erik in September of 2011. He and crew were hired to trim a tree that technically resides on city land but was encroaching on our property. After receiving approval from the city to remove those encroaching limbs, Erik and crew went to work. They showed up on time, were efficient and did great work. We found Erik to not only to be the least expensive of the two other estimates, but he was also the most knowledgeable and thoughtful about the livelihood of the tree itself. Don't let his casual demeanor fool you, the guy knows his stuff. I received a call from the city's parks department and was told they recently did a walk-thru of the area and noticed the tree had been trimmed. A very highly regarded arborist who works up and down the West Coast accompanied park staff member. The arborist said it was one of the finest examples of how to dead-wood and trim a madrona that he'd ever seen. He even took pictures of it to keep a "best practice" example. Since then, we've hired Erik to do work at our rental house in Arbor Heights. He did an amazing job on thinning out a 50 ft cedar for a very reasonable price. I called Erik to help retrieve my cockatiel which had escaped, flew into a local green belt, and would not come down. Erik was very candid that his experience suggested a small chance of success (birds in this situation are often scared and fly off as a large object ascends the tree beneath them) and we agreed that I would pay him when he showed up. Erik was in Edmonds and I was on Beacon Hill in Seattle, and he showed up in about 30 minutes. Erik was very positive and he had no problem setting up my ladder in a stable position on the steep, rugged landscape which I would not have tried. We were able to scale the two trees on both sides of the bird (who was out on a limb) and had no problem coaxing the bird from the branch and returning him home. Money well spent! read more

He gave us fabulous service. The trees are elegantly trimmed to show their best qualities and he was able to help my ailing and elderly cherry tree. As an added bonus and because he said his crew didn't clean up the yard very well (they did fine in my opinion) he blew out my gutters around my house for free. His guys helped our elderly neighbor by cutting the cherry wood into 18 inch pieces. I would recommended him to anyone who wants to work with someone who respects the trees and bushes and who wants excellent craftsmanship. Eric and his team were great to work with. I had reluctance to cut down my tree for 14 years and when Eric first came to meet me, he said he tries to save healthy trees if he can, but after listening to my reasons (the Feng Shui of a tree directly in front of your front door effects on health and finances) he said if I had been waiting that long and had come to the decision to do it, I should do it. He offered to do it in the Native American way of honoring the tree. He smudged my son and I, and the tree, and it felt like such a gift to me. I am so grateful to have found the right person to do the work, as the last time I cut down the tree that made my house so dark, I cried for 3 days. I feel really good about Eric's work and his integrity. He cut wood in pieces we could use and wil help us make a bench with the log. He will take some of the cedar for Native American ceremony, which honors the tree. I was willing to overlook the few low ratings, given the other 5-star ones. Now, I'm wondering whether those other 5 stars are from his friends. Where do I start? 1) about 5 mins before the original appointment, one of his colleagues called to say that they were running at least an hour late (couldn't they call sooner). 2) they didn't write down the correct time for the revised time & were more than 45 mins late, after I called to ask where they were; 3) they couldn't read the sign on my front door, which said "Don't ring doorbell bc baby is asleep" & rang the doorbell anyways; 4) they never provided a bid for me after this entire ordeal (6 days ago). I am still cleaning up the mess Eric made two months later. I was in a hurry because my roofers were coming. I did not do proper comparisons. HE IS WILDLY EXPENSIVE. The trees near my newly purchased home had not been pruned in 50 years so when he was finished they looked good but it was all smoke and mirrors. Erik left the hard shaping work and clean up for someone else-both for me and the next pruners. The major limbs that needed to be removed to shape the tree properly still remain. The neat piles of firewood and recyclable lengths he promised never materialized. The mess he left took up my entire yard where he threw them instead of where I asked him to pile them. Erik told me repeatedly how great his work was. When I was unsatisfied at the end of the job he told me the only people who did not like his work are the kind who are never satisfied with anything. read more

The prices from this business were double the estimates from other landscapers, especially since it doesn't include cleanup or removing the pruned shrubs. That wouldn't bother us so much as wasting time waiting for a no-showed appointment, no calls for a reschedule, and no returned messages. It's possible his work might be ok but who knows? I hired Erik on the advice of a friend i respect. He gave an excellent price for cutting down two trees. I stupidly approved the work that he did and paid him in full, plus a bonus because the price was so good. The next day i discovered that he and his crew had left an entire tree (less the branches and leafs) in 20, ~100 lb parts in my neighbors yard. I cannot possibly lift/carry those tree parts to the curb (per our agreement that he would do it), so i will now have to hire someone to do that. i KNOW he is aware that those tree parts are there because my neighbor saw him retrieving his saw from her yard the next day from the area where the tree parts are. I think Eric Nye the tree Guy will give you a good price, buy he will also "screw" you if given the chance, so be careful. read more
