As I went to checkout an employee came over and asked if they could help me use the self checkout I explained I would rather wait for the employee who was at the standing register where they controlled the transaction as I know you cannot price check on the self checkouts and I was buying multiple glassware items and vases I needed wrapped. She said okay then when the employee at the register finished with her transaction she walked away from the register I explained why I wanted to use the register ran by the employee not self checkout and she didn't even let me finish but said I'd have to be helped by self checkout denying my request when I stood and watched her check out 2 other customers that way. As we were at the self checkout register and the prices were coming up I asked for things to be taken off as again there is no price check option she had to click several buttons and type in her employee and badge number each time making the process much longer, then started walking away when the transaction was complete I asked her to wrap my items and lo and behold all the wrapping equipment came from the register she was refusing to help me on. She then had to walk back and forth between where she took me to the self checkout and where the original register was with all the supplies I asked if she wanted to move back there to make it easier but she said no. While I was waiting for her to wrap my items 2 other customers who came to the line asked to be checked out by a person at a register rather than the self system and even though there were 3 employees standing at the self checkout registers they were both told no as well. This is the only craft store left now and I get extremely frustrated at each checkout. They have so many home decor items and things that need to be packaged when you leave it's not crazy to prefer to have an employee help you and give you those options. I had reached out to the store the last time I had a similar experience and was told that employee assisted checkout is always available upon request and that they were looking into it and making changes yet this was my first time back and it was the same if not worse. Highly disappointed in the lack of customer service and made to feel like a burden each time I try to checkout which is a shame as the selection and products are top tier. I love how the store is laid out and organized but I have walked away without buying things several times and even thought about it for this experience as well but decided to stick it through as the items were unfortunately needed in the space I am decorating. Hope they can finally do better at checkout to make me WANT to come back not just need to.

Aaron created bespoke artwork for us that celebrate our heritage in macadamias, that was created into a mural, merchandise, and expanded also into community events in Hilo as well as Honolulu to celebrate our partnership. Mauna Loa is the heritage macadamia brand from Hawai'i, and it was an honor for us to work with Aaron to give back to the community that we are both a part of. Aaron is from Hilo, and worked with the local schools that he went to- Kamehameha Schools in creating the mural. We threw a Mauna Loa x Aaron Kai community event that was extremely well received, and our staff have commented on how the mural has lifted morale at the plant, as it is such a beautiful piece that everyone sees on their way to work. Aaron is a pleasure to work with, professional, and has become a friend personally since the completion of our project. We hope to work closely with him again in the future. Unfortunately, it received some damage requiring a good portion of it to be restored. Carole was recommended. It was a process and took much effort but she was able to restore the mural and what she was able to do was beyond belief. Some areas so little was left, but was able to keep the mural true to form. This review is long overdue. 4 years ago I remodeled my bathroom. Coming from an interior design…read morebackground, I'm extremely particular about who I have work on my home. I put a lot of time, money and creativity into the remodel, and therefore I was very particular about who I wanted to work with me on it. I hired Carole to paint back in the details on a vintage, Asian TV cabinet, that I turned into a bathroom vanity. Needless to say this wasn't an easy job. The vanity was initially orange and black, however, I had it painted a light turquoise color. When this was done, it completely concealed all of the intricate detail work underneath it. My former faux painter tried to come in and repaint all of the details back in, however, wasn't able to. The vanity has raised figures on the doors, which take a very delicate touch to get just right. There's also intricate gold fretwork around the doors as well as on the sides. When Carole came in, we sat down together, and discussed how I wanted it to look. We went over colors, different shades of gold, the overall feel of it, etc. She painted in not only on the raised figures but also elaborate artwork on the doors as well. Luckily, I had taken pictures of the cabinet prior to having it painted, so she was able to reference the previous artwork, and not just duplicate it, but make it 100 times better! It turned out to be a masterpiece! It is one of the star attractions of the remodel. Everyone who sees the bathroom is absolutely starstruck at how unique it and beautiful it is, and Carole's expert hand was an integral part of why that is. I can't recommend her enough and if you're lucky enough to have her to work in your home, you'll feel the same way. Her skills are easily on par with those of the old world masters. I hope to work with her again in the future, as I have a couple of projects in mind that I would like her to bring to life. Thanks again, Carole. You were a joy to work with.

Master Woodcarver - New solid walnut drawer, fitting perfectly

I needed to find a wood carver and museum quality restoration expert having recently locally purchased my "Rosebud" quest for 50 years: a large 19th century, German, coin operated, mechanical music box in a 130 year old walnut cabinet sitting on a matching disc storage cabinet. The music box cabinet had some issues- some side panel and door warpage so that the door did not come close to closing, overall dull finish compared to the storage cabinet, missing the top pediment, bubbled veneer, trim molding glued on badly in earlier repair, cracked trim, large cracks in the back soundboard and the top soundboard (negatively effecting the sound), a missing dovetailed walnut coin drawer with lock, and a missing dovetailed, intricately fitting and scalloped walnut and glass dust cover for the motor. My plan was to have the music box cabinet "machine out" restored, while the motor was being cleaned and lubed by another craftsman. Boris gave me an extremely fair and reasonable estimate for all the "lost art specialty" work to be done. While he is a warm, friendly and humble man, he exudes confidence and ultra "having his act together". You'll know you've come to the right place, the moment you enter his organized shop and see the magnificent, one of a kind wood carved creations he has made for 40 years, since he apprenticed in the "Old Country" before moving to America 30 years ago. There is nothing he can't do with wood, and his precise measurements and engineering. And he has binders of photos of his creations that establish his creds. His work ethic is like you don't find here anymore- 6 days a week and about 10 hours a day. And he will be finished in the time he tells you, or even sooner in my case. I couldn't believe how fast, considering the amount of work. My job, was a relative walk in the park for Boris, more in line with furniture restoration, although the job he did on fabricating the dove-tailed walnut coin drawer and scalloped, wood and glass dust cover- exactly mimicking the originals I found in reference pictures, and carving for the top pediment, could not be done by an ordinary "furniture repair/ refinisher". Also, the door was severely warped and would not close. Boris made magical adjustments so that it closes perfectly and installed period mortise locks exactly centered and carved, that look like originals. That's the difference between a museum quality restorer (what Boris did in his native country) and a refinisher/repairer. He restores and keeps everything original that he can, not just slapping on stain and spraying lacquer. I'll let these project pictures speak for themselves. If you're a straight shooter, honest person, looking for a wood carving artisan and a fine human being as well, and you're not looking to cheat a craftsman, and you just want to get a project done beautifully for the price you agree to pay, go see Boris. If you're a jerk or trying to cheat an artist and good man--- please go somewhere else.

My grandfather had a crazy idea: he wanted to create a display board for my horse show ribbons,…read morewith a hand-carved headboard. He asked my uncle, an artist (Craig Pursley, check him out), to find someone who could create a custom headboard and my uncle found Boris via Google search and his website. I picked up my grandfather and drove him to Boris' shop. As we walked in, we saw amazing carvings, from delicate landscapes to giant tables. The back room was the workshop and there was a large tree trunk awaiting Boris' attention. We explained the idea and immediately Boris started sketching a few thoughts. He explained different options for materials, color, and design, all very patiently (neither my grandfather nor I are artsy). My grandfather was very impressed by his knowledge and expertise. He's an 89-year-old Italian so respect isn't something he offers easily. Boris sent me the fully-sketched design later that evening. We discussed the font for the text a bit and he was very open to suggestions. A few weeks later, I picked up the board. It was amazing! Boris chose the most beautiful piece of walnut, with graining and flow that highlights the curve of the board. The lettering and gold highlights were perfect. The horse silhouettes were perfect. Boris ensured so many thoughtful touches. The steps and pedestals below the silhouettes, the balance of the sizes of the letters, the small notches to highlight the end of the boards... it's a fantastic creation. Boris is truly, truly a master craftsman and master woodcarver. I will definitely go to him again if I ever need something, or perhaps if I want to simply treat myself with something beautiful.
