Windows and doors wide open you feel the fresh air off the water. Couldn't ask for a more perfect way to spend the afternoon or evening with friends or family over a drink +/- food. Despite the pub fare focused menu I threw caution to the wind and ordered the vegetarian pizza and it didn't disappoint. Good size for 2 people, light, airy, yet chewy crust (?wood fire oven) and full of flavour. Paired with a Mill Street Organic Lager and you've got a great Saturday evening meal. Our waitress was fantastic! Super warm and friendly. Made us feel very welcomed and comfortable. I give The Stone Jug 4/5 stars only because they do not have many "vegetarian options" on their menu (fish & chips, salad, and veg pizza) AND the building is not easily accessible to folks with mobility challenges; there is no wheelchair ramp.

Chips were light and the gravy was a nice touch as well. One of the better fish and chips I've had while in Newfoundland in terms of freshness. The batter was done with a lighter IPA and it was nice and crispy. Service was quick and efficient and I'd definitely come back. Looks like in the evening it would make for a good watering hole with some live music!

Kid friendly during the day, then at night it turns into a bustling bar with live bands and karaoke! Downstairs at hooligans always hosts fantastic pool and dart nights. Gayle skipped being in the ceremony, but watched enthusiastically as we both had a great time. Plus enjoying a couple of wee pints of Guinness ahead of time was a great starter. After all, Christian's Pub is a cool bar and lounge in itself. As legend has it, an American serviceman stationed in Newfoundland during the Second World War downed some local rum one night and let out a 'blood-curdling howl'. Someone nearby asked what that awful yell was and a Newfoundlander sitting at the bar said, "The Screech? 'Tis the rum, me son." And that's how Screech earned its name. I now have the certificate as an Honorary Newfoundlander. But first the ceremony! That involved a shot of Screech rum, flambé bologna, kissing the codfish (a real frozen one), receiving a a personalized certificate, and taking a photo with Skipper Lukey. Joining me that Sunday evening were people from all over the world, all of us having a great time. It was a whole lot of fun and Skipper Lukey put on a show that was also thoughtful, folksy, and educational, all in just under 30 minutes. Other George Street bars do this, but Christian's was the only one that another businesses on the street recommended. And Hell Yes! I'd do it again.

Christian's, being the oldest pub in St. John's on one of the oldest streets in North America seemed like the perfect place. Now, Christian's is no fancy joint, so let that be known right away. It's charming and a little edgy. Drinks are poured with love, and hope you're not hungry because you're lucky to get a bag of crisps. Or maybe a piece of flambéed bologna! But it's all served up with the typical Newfoundland charm. Fast forward to the Screeching in... Skipper Lukey is impressive! Memorizing everyone's name (all 40 or so guest) during our ceremony. Adding in his rough around the edges reminders on how the process works. You better be good at following instructions, because Lukey will remind you, not so gently, if you're out of line. All in good fun, I promise! Respect the ceremony and keep chatter to a minimum. It's a sacred duty to Screech in mainlanders after all. Overall a great experience and I highly recommend it to anyone and their group looking to become an honorary Newfoundlander!

We had reservations and were seated in an upper area with extremely uncomfortable bench seating. The bench was so high and narrow that my feet didn't even come close to touching the floor. The tables were packed tightly together with virtually no room to move. At the table beside us, one gentleman had to stand away from the table for most of the meal because the sloped ceiling prevented him from sitting comfortably. On the other side, seven people were squeezed into what looked like a space meant for four. The food was, without question, the worst meal we had during our two weeks in Newfoundland. My husband ordered gravy with his fries and it arrived dark, thick and congealed. Paying an extra $3 for it only added to the disappointment. I figured George Street might be better suited for drinks and live music, but unfortunately the beverages were equally underwhelming. I tried two different mixed drinks that had little to no alcohol taste, flat 7-Up, and overall poor flavour. The next two shooters I ordered were better, but I still questioned the alcohol content. I'm someone who gets tipsy fairly easily and after several drinks I didn't feel the slightest buzz. I won't go into the conditions of the Washrooms. The two positives were the music, which was excellent and our server, who was attentive and quick with drink service throughout the evening. What surprised me most was that when we left, there was a lineup out the door waiting to get in. I honestly can't explain it based on our experience. The music was good, so perhaps that's the draw, but the food, drinks, and seating left a lot to be desired. Unfortunately, this was not the George Street experience we were hoping for.

The waitress we had was almost clueless not to be rude but she had no clue what to do. She also had no clue how to split a check, it took atleast 30 minutes and us helping her. She ended up giving up and switched servers. She also sounded very sarcastic and was slightly rude almost. We then had a different waitress come over and ask if we had ordered a drink that we didn't order (which had happened many times through the night) and we tried it because we thought it was ours but then when we tasted it and it wasn't, we called her back and told her, she went to give that drink to another table- the one we had already had a sip of! So we just called her back and said we would drink it so she wouldn't give it to someone else. But besides the service the singer they have was very good and it was a very comfortable place.

Walking inside around 7pm on a Monday in July, I got a table for one right away. Within minutes, I was ordering a flight of four different sour ales. (They have six or so on the draft menu.) My favorite was the guava sour ale! To eat, I got the shrimp salad, which was really tasty! It comes with two skewers of shrimp, each with five pieces of grilled shrimp.
