The atmosphere is nice with the outdoor seating and open air setting flowing through the indoor space and the indoor music flowing to the outdoor patio. Only a couple local draft beers, the rest are more US brands. $12 cocktail menu and plenty of happy hour specials with a generous 12-6pm happy hour. Had the fish & chips- not pictured- but the larger portion offers 2 fillets and the smaller portion offers 1... decided to share the large portion at $27 and it was perfect with a hearty amount of fries. A crispy beer batter on a flakey fresh clean cod fillet, and soft but deep fried hand cut potatoes for fries. Malt & Vinegar options here along with ketchup. Gayle and I recently spent a nice evening at Green Sleeves. We enjoyed a nice meal (chowder from me and chicken stir fry for her) while listening to a wide variety of live pop/rock/country music by Peter Vance. We had a nice table seat for the show, including a good view of the room. Our wait guy was also fun and engaging. As with other Canadians who asked "where are you from?" we did need to point out that we're from Northern Nevada (near Reno), not Las Vegas. In the last days of summer, with actual sun in St. John's, what else should one do but enjoy a beer and a bite on a patio on George Street? Green Sleeves is one of the less sketchy spots on St. John's infamous drag of bars, as it serves food, has a patio, and isn't just some whole in wall with a liquor licence. The pub itself is pretty standard with darkly-stained hard wood chairs and tables inside, with a large bar and a small stage for live music, but given the weather my buddy and I opted to get some sun out on the patio. Boy was that a mistake though, as World War Wasp seemed to be happening on the patio, and as we would later discover, most of the downtown. There were seemingly a couple wasps hovering around us at all times, despite killing several over the course of our meal. Things were so bad that every table had its on fly swatter! A full beer was even lost to one of the flying buggers when it met its untimely end in it. Bothersome pests and wasted beer aside, I was still hungry. Even though I'm from a coastal province myself, I felt I had to indulge in some seafood, so I ordered the two piece cod fish and chips. Upon being asked if I wanted dressing a gravy, I decided that I did, and that I would respond in the affirmative whenever asked on this trip. I cannot get enough of summer savoury seasoned bread and gravy. Ever. After some sips of Rickard's White and awkward battles against hordes of wasps, our food arrived. Although it was something else to defend against the flying devils, it was worth defending. The pieces of cod were quite hefty, and flaked apart as properly cooked fish should, and the batter was light, crispy and a nice golden brown, without too much grease. The fries were of the handcut variety, but still had a respectable amount of crispiness, which helped them withstand the onslaught of gravy that I gave them. A good-sized ramekin of the brown goodness provided plenty of gravy for all of my dressing and french fry needs. A standard pub, Green Sleeves isn't going to blow your mind, but it's a solid spot for a drink and a bite to eat, and for a few more drinks as the night comes andthe wasps settle down. read more

I had a pitcher of sangria with my colleagues & an order of calamari. The Signal Hill Sangria was flavorful & dynamic (with fresh fruits). I would suggest any group coming to Green Sleeves in the summer season ordering a pitcher of it, although it was a bit diluted compare to the other sangria. The calamari was fried crisply without losing any of its textures. Good job, and I especially love its marinara dipping sauce. It was good stuff. The reason I could only give Green Sleeves 3 stars because I believe the price is still a bit too high for the amount of food. I remembered paying almost 30 dollars for ordering an appetizer of calamari & sharing one third of the pitcher of Sangria. It's fairly pricey. Also, my colleagues were craving for fish & chips at the time, but the kitchen was out of cod at the time. I don't think this is an acceptable thing for an established restaurant in St. John's. We came on a Tuesday night, and it was pretty packed around like 9 - 10 and then died out a bit after that. It was great because they had live music and the musicians were great and invited people up to sing like the staff and audience members. It had a great atmosphere because you felt like everybody was family and you were part of that experience. The had indoor seating where you can view the music live and an outdoor patio that is connected but isn't as easy to see the musician but they do have speakers on the outside so you can hear. The drinks here were a bit pricey and their was only one waitress so at times it was hard to get hold of her. They also have a couple games in the back, I think they were mainly slot machines though. read more

This is hands down the best all around bar on George Street and in my opinion St. John's. Live acoustic guitar every night, playing everything from current hits to 70's classics, definitely something for everyone and the crowd reflects it. On a weekend it can be very lively, but will draw folks most nights. The menu is 100% bold flavours only, I always order seafood (catch varies), but if that is not your thing their standard pub fare is head and shoulders above what you've likely come to expect. So grab yourself a refreshing pint of India, some delicious seafood (pan fried cod or grilled halibut recommended) and sit back enjoy a true St. John's experience! read more

I'll start by saying the service here is fantastic. Employees were super polite and welcoming. The food unfortunately is a bit overpriced for what you get. It tastes alright, but certainly not worth the price in portion or quality. It's not "bad" food, just nothing noteworthy. We had just ate at a more posh place the night before that had comparable prices, but we received much better food at the other spot. Not bad overall. read more

Really wanted to like this place. I came here with two other people on a Wednesday night (which is not the best night to come here, but I wanted to just be a tourist and then GTFO). I headed straight upstairs to the patio excitedly waiting to order a beer and relax with a nice view. We sat there for 10 minutes and nobody acknowledged our existence. The atmosphere was good and during the time we were there they had live entertainment, which was great. We had a few seafood items (calamari, blackened cod, shrimp) and each item was well prepared and delicious. We ended the night with some draft beer and listening to some great music. read more

The food is excellent but the people make this a memorable place. When we came in we were concerned about the loudness of the singer...."no problem...we can find you a table further in the back"..... then we ordered the fish and chips..how many pieces?...."one I said"...it arrives with 2 large pieces"...."not to worry....the pieces we thought might be a wee bit small so we added another...but will only charge for one (which they did)....and we know you will love it"..."Huh???"...this is not Kansas Toto"....Had a truly lovely time and the people running this place are the best of St. John's....go there..you will see.....the people working here take pride in this place and it shows! read more

My husband and I had a fantastic time here. We were immediately greeted at the door and given the best seat in the house to watch the live entertainer. The food was fantastic and the drinks were great. The live entertainment was funny and he interacted with the crowd while playing some great music. Service was absolutely fantastic as well. As a pub, this place is great. There's always live music from local musicians playing a mix of Newfoundland classics, classic rock, Top 40, and originals. The patio is a great place to spend sunny afternoons, but fills up fast when the weather is right. The beer selection is good, but the food is just ok. read more

Good food, but we were completely ignored once more tables filled. We ordered immediately, but after we received our drinks we weren't checked on for another 40 minutes. Most tables around us (who arrived well after us) received their food and were nearly done when we had to inquire about our order to 2 separate wait staff. Another 20 minutes and our two plates of single fish and chips and one order of lukewarm tacos arrived. We were charged full price ($72) with no concern or explanation as to why we had to wait an hour. I'm sure the other patrons had a pleasant time but we were very let down and most definitely won't be back. This all happened on this date at approx 2:30 - 3:30. read more

This spot is fine for drinks. If your looking for a meal this is not a place I can recommend. Extremely over priced for what you receive. Service was poor at best. The server could not keep a stray cat from pawing at table tops near us, other guests were not amused. read more
