We had a vintage chair covered and cushions for the window seats in three rooms. Everything has held up well over the years. I like that they pick up and deliver. I have been to a couple of shops who expected you to bring the furniture to them. We live in Los Angeles. We are happy to patronize local businesses. Too many reviews here suggest the patrons live well outside of L.A. limits yet expect Ernesto's to work on the cheap. Eye roll. I always have used them for slipcovers they literally make them so fitted you wouldn't notice their covers. The owner is so kind. She recently made a cover for a chair and a half and her sons brought the truck right to HomeGoods, met me there for pickup. This chair was done in a deep teal green velvet that she had the swatches and fabric for. I could not be more in love with this chair. She also fixed an old couch with new foam and reinforced it like new. I wasn't able to give up at this old Williams Sonoma couch-and upholstery made it like new! Walked in here randomly as there are quite a few upholsterers on this part of Pico and they were the first I passed. I needed 3 sofa cushion covers to be fitted over the cushions. The sofa is mid cent mod style, the fabric is cut incredibly tight and after washing them I was finding it impossible to fit them back on. I asked the lady in charge how much and she said $60. HUH??? No, that's way too much. Ok, $30 she said. I decided not to haggle anymore and agreed, pleased to see that the man who had already started working on them was using spray glue to attach some of the stuffing that had come loose back on to the foam. It took about 30 minutes to get it finished. Sometimes it's easier to let the pros do it. read more

I had Ernesto come to my home to look at a Burton James sofa that i have owned for 20 years. This sofa has down filled cushions and heavy duty hardwood frame. Due to it's age, as well as the wear and tear, it was time for it to be re-upholstered. We wanted to update the look and make a few modifications from the original design. My wife requested that Ernesto bring by swatch books for material samples. Ernesto arrived at the appointed time with sample books. We went over what we had in mind for the work to be done. We even drew on paper some of the details that we wanted incorporated into the design. My wife and I are familiar with fabric stores downtown and wanted to pick out some embellishments of our own. Ernesto advised us that we could go and pick out what items we wanted to add, and he would purchase them and provide the receipts for those purchases. We agreed on a price. Ernesto said it would take approx 2 weeks depending on the availability of the fabric. He and his worker carried the couch out. We gave Ernesto a deposit of half the cost. In the mean time we went and picked out cording and tassels. The sofa took 3 weeks to make. Ernesto and his workers delivered the finished product. We were completely blown away by the finished product. This sofa looks better that new. We had corded fringe added to the bottom of the sofa. We also had tacks nailed the face of the arms. All of the pillows had additional tassels added. I have not been able to find any flaws what so ever, not even extra loose thread. This was money well spent. This sofa originally was cost $3500.00 20 years ago. This sofa now is valued at $7500.00 The shop may look like a whole in the wall, but the work that take place behind those walls rivals designer shops on the westside. They have a huge selection of fabric and leather to choose from. Maria a nice lady showed me all the swatches and was very helpful to me selecting the right fabric and wood finish I wanted. I had them do seat covers for a butterfly chair I have and they made it incorrectly. I went back asking them to fix it and the owner was completely drunk. The employees told me they would have it done the next morning and when I showed up the next morning they all of a sudden " don't speak English" basically I paid $500 for two seat covers I can never use and on top of that wasted $100 on leather. I met someone at an estate sale who recommended Ernesto's and I'm so grateful! Initially I was concerned since I'm in San Francisco and he is based in LA - but that was not an issue. Ernesto arrived in SF to pick up the couch + chair and brought a variety of fabric books for me to choose from. It took me quite some time to make a decision on the fabric and he was incredibly helpful and patient. (I was even in LA and went to his shop to look at more fabric books!) Do not, I repeat, DO NOT use this upholsterer. It took two large men and a phone call to the police to finally get my piece of furniture back. My beautiful wood framed antique settee now has two large cracks in the wood frame. This person does not deal well with women in general and really with anyone who is not a Hispanic man. First he said he could find me the fabric. He could not. He claimed he had connections with the fabric store but he did not. I asked him to send me pictures of the piece when it was finished, before he delivered it. He did not. He kept promising it would be finished then pushing it back and back and back. I asked him to please look at it carefully to make sure that it was done properly. He did not. It showed up at my house with a very big stain on the seat. I made the huge mistake of letting them take it back to fix it. on the phone, after that happened, he yelled at me, saying that the stain could easily be brushed out with the correct kind of brush (as though it was my fault and of course I should have had such a brush! Seriously?). He said he would call me the next day to tell me when it was finished. Of course he didn't because that was not the case, the brush story was a lie, much like everything else he said. The entire seat needed to be re-done with new fabric. You would think that, since he made a mistake and delivered damaged goods, he would do the right thing and prioritize my job at that point. He did not. I had to call him and call him in order to make sure that he was actually getting the fabric. I told him who to talk to to get the fabric. He did not talk to that person and so he got fabric that was, supposedly, damaged, resulting in more delays. Weeks went by. He finally said that the piece was finished, this was when I asked my Spanish-speaking friend to call to speak with him just to make sure nothing was getting lost in translation. He told her that it wasn't him on the phone, and then when I picked up the phone I said, "I can hear that it is you - I know your voice," he admitted it was him. Why do that? At that point he stated that he would only deliver after I came to his storefront to check it out and pay him in full in CASH. I then received a texted photograph of the piece. It had a big pile of fabric right on top of where the stain had been. He ignored me when I asked him to send another picture that showed the entire piece. As you can see, I had no choice but to go there and take my piece of furniture back. Upon arrival I discovered that the wood had been badly broken in a couple of places. Of course he denied that he had anything to do with it, and refused to accept less money. He had also texted me to demand that I give them an extra hundred dollars for the caster wheels that he had put on, even though that was included in the deal. While we were trying to negotiate, he actually closed the door so that we were sort of locked inside, and his guys started pulling the piece of furniture away from the door, trying to block us from taking it. It was a horrific scene. It was only because one of the guys with us was Hispanic that we were able to get out of there -- to pay what I owed him (again, NO discount for basically RUINING my piece) -- without the added $100, because they were able to speak Spanish together and whether or not he wanted to admit that the casters were included, he had no "approval" of the extra cost from me. Thankfully my friend was savvy enough to explain that to Ernesto and he finally calmed down, just in time to avoid the police as they were about to arrive and seemed to be considering it to be a hostage situation. This is a VERY BAD person, a VERY BAD businessman, not someone you want to deal with in any way. Do Not Trust This Person! Do Not Use This Service! read more

Showed up five hours late for appointment. Sofa wasn't even close to design that was written on the work order after first delivery. He then took sofa back and a week later delivered it again and the cushions were too small for the sofa. When I told him I didn't want him to work on it again he then proceeded to tell me there was something wrong with me. He doesn't take responsibility for his work or actions. In my 15 years as a designer, I have never experienced such poor craftsmanship and work ethic. When I said I didn't want to pay for work that wasn't right he the proceeded to tell me I couldn't afford the sofa! I just wanted to be done with him and the company. I have had to ask him to redo jobs more than twice on my dining room chairs and fixing my antique furniture. Today he brought back the dining chairs 2 hours later than expected and completely opposite of what I asked him to do and instead of offering to fix them, Ernesto charged me the full price. I only wish I had checked yelp before I took my chairs to this place. Not only did Ernesto change (and ruin) the way my antique chair was covered, but it took many arguments to get him to fix. He refused at first until I went home and found a picture of the chair to prove to him that what he did, changed it. Six months later, I got my chair. It still wasn't how it was originally, but I didn't have it in me to go back and forth anymore. At one point he called me a 'bad person' because I was mad that he ruined my chair. he even went as far as to tell me that the way he covered it exactly as it was. Even when I showed him the picture he still fought me on the matter. It took one of his employees getting involved, to get him to fix it. i think that employee actually had to recover it himself, behind Ernestos back. I've read past reviews where the reviewers say stuff like 'one star is to many' and I used to think to myself what entitled, dramatic A-holes and then ladies and gentlemen I dealt with Ernesto's upholstery. As I read the reviews of the other poor frustrated souls that have dealt with him I empathize in a way I dont want to. This guy is straight up retarded and yes he was drunk most of the time because how could you not smell such a profound amount of alcohol on a mans breath like that and side note -he's super rough on the eyes too. I didn't hire him myself but in fact he was a vendor for my company and my boss had been using his services for a while. The man is an obtrusive, uncouth boar who has invented a new category of shady for his business practices. Ernesto upholstered our booth at the bar in a completely different color shade and design than the booth we had and the whole time he claimed he had the whole roll of fabric to replace it with. And he only did half and then he said he needed to be paid in order to do the other half. WE WERE NEVER GOING TO DO THE WHOLE BOOTH BECAUSE IT DIDN'T NEED TO BE REPLACED!! We were only going to do a small section that was damaged because he said he had the same fabric which he had originally installed for us himself. So we're left with an odd two toned booth and now we find ourselves negotiating a price for a completion of a job we didn't want nor need. The job grew from $450 to over a $1000 i got him down to $550 and even after he finished the job the he was trying to keep the booth as 'hostage' and tried yanking up his prices. Ernesto threatened me and told he was a dangerous man to which I retorted that he was going to regret the day he met me. After a brutal and ugly couple of phone calls and confrontations , we got our booth back. Ernesto tried to become apologetic by blaming it all on a soured business relationship with my boss ,but he wasn't dealing with my boss , he was dealing with me. Ernesto didn't threaten my boss because he's to chicken shit and his futile threats were just what I need to do what I needed to do next, I'm not proud of what I did but I had to show this scum bag that I could play even dirtier than he was , looked , and smelled and i did all this just to get a booth reupholstered and re-installed and that's the most insane part of it all. read more

All i can say is NGHTMARE!!! Ernesto came to my house to pick up my sofa and for me to pick out some fabric.His inventory was very limited so i decided to find my own fabric. When he took my sofa he never measured it, but we both agreed since it was a 8 ft. sofa 20 yards would be enough.After two weeks i found the fabtic i liked at Cisco Homes. Because they had a store close to ernesto's i asked him if he could pick up the fabric at their factory which was close to his shop, he said he would pick up the fabric the next day and wanting to get the job started. . This is the begining of one screw-up after another. After two weeks i called to see how things were progressing, that's when he tells me the person he sent was unable to get the fabric.They would not give the fabric to this person without some basic info like my name. . So instead of calling me to let me know there was a problem he waits 2 weeks to tell me, only after i had called him to see if my sofa was done.( FIRST BIG RED FLAG).After another 2 week he had fiinished the( shell )of the couch, this meant he only had to do the cushions. I drove to his shop because i wanted to make sure i picked the right feeling foam.After i made my decision, instead of him wriiting down what i had just picked out he asked me if i could write it .I told him he should be the one to write this. SECOND RED FLAG! Now another week goes by and he calls me to say he doesn't have enough fabric to finish the cushions.he says he does not know what happened,that this has never happened before to him. I was so angry! Nothing but delay after delay. I told him that there was no way that just the shell of the sofa should take 18 yards, by the way he told me he had only 2 remaining yard of the initial 20 yards left. I told him i have no idea what went wrong but i had aready spent $ 780.00 on fabric and could not afford to pay another $ 300 on 9 more yards of fabric. This is the time that the truth is finially sinking in i'm dealing with TOTAL FLAKE! This guy will not take any personal responsability for his mistakes. I decided to just go ahead and order 9 more yards of the fabric to complete the sofa. I went to Cisco homes again to reorder 9 more yards of fabric to finish the cushions, my plan was to deduct the money for the fabric off the price of the sofas cost of $800.00. The fastest way to get the 9 yards of fabric to Ernesto is for him to pick it up, it's also close to him. He agrees to pick up the fabric . I have a long coversation with him about the address and best time to pick it up. He agrees, and tells me how much he wants to finish the job. Guess what? 10 days later i call to see if my couch is ready, he tells me i never gave him the address. I know now that i'm dealing with a person with some sort of MENTAL DISORDER! By this time i cannot stand to deal with this person any more. I try to find someone who could maybe complete the cushion but the cost factor is not permiting me to do this. HELP! I'M AT THE MERCY OF ERNESTO'S UPHOLSTERY .0ne week later MR.. unreliable has finished my couch. HE CALLS ME TO LET ME KNOW THAT I OWE HIM 800.00 AND HE DOES NOT WANT TO DISCUSS ANY THING REGARDING THE AMOUNT DUE. HE ALSO LET'S ME KNOW THAT THE CHECK I TOLD HIM THAT I WAS GIVING HIM MADE OUT TO CASH, IS NOT OK. HE WANT'S 800.00 IN CASH. I called Ernesto after getting a flyer with his prices. He came over to Pacific Palisades the next day with the color samples I wanted: I previously had told him I wanted plain, washable slip covers. I chose the fabric, gave him a check for half the amount and he took the sofa, loveseat and wing chair. He said it would take two weeks. Ten days later, he called and said the furniture was ready for dleivery. His two colleagues delivered the furniture and fit the slip covers on. It looks beautiful - they did a great job. I called Ernesto to get a quote on several items and he was very quick to respond. While I made fabric decisions on a couch and ottoman, I gave him a chair to repair (our puppy ripped a hole at the back of the chair and I had no idea if it was even repairable). This chair was 1 in a set of 2 with very expensive linen (Raoul) and Ernesto did a magical job! You can't even see where the tear was - it's really like new. That sold me on his skill and had him pick up my couch and ottoman to reupholster. I wanted to change my couch from a 2 pillow back & seat cushion to 3 because it constantly sagged in the middle and had it reupholstered with Sunbrella fabric that I found at a wholesale store that was selling off their remnant bolts. I collected about 19 yards in pieces ranging from 5 yards at the largest to 1 7/8 at the smallest. Ernesto was able to use all the pieces so efficiently that you would never guess that the fabric didn't come from one bolt. That is true skill! As far as prices, I asked him to do some difficult jobs and for that I believe he was very reasonable. The complaints from the other reviewers are too bad. I had an excellent experience with Ernesto and would recommend him to anyone. I have 2 family members in the design industry and they were both impressed with the quality of work. Maybe he needs an admin to help him with logistical things, as I see him as the craftsman and not an office person. Although, I would much rather have a skilled craftsman than an efficient office type that is better about calling than getting the job right. read more

I read all the bad reviews after I'd already called Ernesto to come and measure my sectional for a slipcover so needless to say, I was a little nervous. But he got to my house on time and he brought his associate and they were perfectly nice and friendly. I chose the fabric while he measured and after we finished discussing everything, he told me the slipcovers for the entire sectional, including all the cushions, would be done in 5 days. I was so happy! He came back in 5 days as promised and everything looks perfect! He even did my sister's sofa and chair and they both look great. The other review is correct --the owner is often drunk and quite rude all the way to frighteningly assaultive. I paid in advance, but because of teaching/lecturing travel objects stayed there many months. Was in constant respectful contact with wife of owner Ernesto (Maria) regarding all this. Stopped by shop four times to settle up each time I was in town, to find no one who could talk with me. Finally returned from travels, asked for furniture pick-up, owner Ernesto verbally abusive and menacing--used array of four letters words and threatened my person and my property --said he would put my furniture on the street or burn it. Forced me to pay extra to get my belongings, delivered them stained and then lost a pillow to the couch. I had to go accompanied by burly man to pick up the replaced pillow after weeks of stopping by for it. The workers are equally RUDE! Dreadful, truly traumatic experience. Considering legal action.
