Their staff are slow, inefficient and unprofessional. They're great at wasting my afternoon. I do not recommend Escondido Metal, do yourself a favor and go to Industrial Metal Supply Co. off of Ronson Rd., San Diego. I've done business with Industrial Metal Supply Co. for years, I'll continue to source material from them. IMS is open on Saturday, their staff is helpful and professional, their supply is robust and their prices are reasonable and realistic. The staff was super helpful with letting me know they had the aluminum piece I was looking for. I called ahead and the woman who answered the phone checked stock and had an answer for me in seconds. When I got to the warehouse, I checked in with her and she showed me around to the area where I could ask one of the warehouse employees for help. I got the piece of metal I needed and they cut it in half for me so it'd fit in my car. I was in & out in under 10 mins. Great service and the quality of metal was exactly what I needed! I'm not an everyday customer of Escondido Metal Supply, but I have made many purchases there over the years. I just did so again today. All of my experiences have ranged from acceptable to excellent. (Today was excellent.) I saw the poor ratings here on Yelp and read most of them and would like to offer a different perspective. First, if you go there when they are really busy, you will have to wait a bit for help. This is a professional metal supply business which also sells to the public, so don't expect the Home Depot grab it, scan it at self-checkout, and be out the door in a few minutes. They have a process and are going to follow it to make sure you get what you pay for - no more and no less. Don't get annoyed at the guys who check your receipt on the way out. They have never found an error that was in my favor, but they have found an error which would have cost me money. Second, the world of metal working is hot, loud, dirty, hard, heavy, and harsh. Many of the customers who come in here live in that gritty world and can be a bit rough around the edges. That might be the cause of some of those complaints about the cashiers. When they deal with harsh people all day, maybe they get to be a bit calloused, themselves. I am always pleasant to them, and to everyone really, and they have always responded to me by being pleasant in return. I can think of one time when it took a bit of work on my part to get the cashier to lighten up, but we both ended up in good moods. I have never been to that metal place down in San Diego that is mentioned in some of the reviews. Maybe it is a better place to shop, but if you live in the north county it will cost you a lot more time and vehicle cost to go there and I doubt that you will gain enough value from the experience to make it worth the trip. (Have you ever calculated the total cost per mile to drive your vehicle? It is a LOT more than just the cost of gas.) read more

How Escondido Metal Supply works: 1) Yard staff takes your order and writes it up (you can call this ahead) 2) you pay for it at the counter 3) yard staff picks the order for you. EMS is a full service shop which has a good inventory of industrial metals. Because they're in North County they don't have as big of a client base as Kearny Mesa companies, so they're not as big or as staffed. However they do have busy times, you want avoid the following: 1) early morning - staff is unloading trucks 2) lunch time - everyone is heading over at their break 3) closing time - everyone else tries to get in before the door locks. So during busy times it can be hard to find someone to take your order, etc, but the staff works hard within the process at the shop. It's not perfect but it's good service. IMS is bigger, has more staff, etc, but they're so far away that it's a 2 hour trip. If you're in the North County and have a good order this is the place to go. Please remember this is an industrial shop. If what you need can be found at Home Depot, this place is not for that order. read more

Needed a piece of 3/16 scrap for a small project. Got stuck in Friday afternoon traffic and called at 4:50 asking the woman that answered if they could please give me an extra minute or two before closing since I was driving a long distance and traffic was bad. I said we'd be there very close to closing. She said they have a strict policy and a hard 5:00pm closing time. We pulled in at 5:00 on the dot and one of the workers with a beard told me they were already closed and that I couldn't purchase anything. There were 4 people in the yard and several customers. They were still cutting and moving stuff with fork lifts and I explained I only needed a sheet of scrap. No cutting or anything. He told me to come back tomorrow, Saturday morning. I just spent 45 minutes driving there. If they think I'm ever going back there, they are mistaken. The woman that answered the phone saw us pull in, she said she'd only been there a few weeks and really wanted to help us but said there was nothing she could do. At least the new people have some compassion. The guys in the yard couldn't care less. It's too bad the guys in the yard are the face of the place. They should leave customer service to the people that care about the customers and give them the authority to make a difference. read more

I've been getting small quantities of metal there for over 6 years. Mild steel, stainless, aluminum, etc. Their scrap aluminum is a good deal (around $2 per pound) if they have the shape you want. Prices: Maybe not the best, but way better than metal prices at a retail store like Home Depot or Lowes. They once special ordered an unusual aluminum alloy tube for me...no problems. It's grungy. The help and service are OK. They don't seem to be set up for giving advice on metals, or anything like that. You can walk around and pick through stuff without being hassled. read more
