Or massive lower prices at the Costco's in Washington. Idaho State Liquor Stores are price gouging its customers. It's sad Idaho feels the need to charge high prices and/or higher taxes on alcohol. I for one choose not to give Idaho my money. I go to Washington State frequently and I have no problem going to a Costco there and stock up until my next trip. You do the math! I can buy a 750ml bottle of Kirkland American Made 5 times filtered Vodka for $12. I cannot buy a 350ml bottle of Vodka here in Idaho for under $18. Hello Costco!

A quick google of liquor sales in Eagle informed us that like our current home state of Oregon, liquor can only be purchased in state run stores in Idaho. (As the good people of Washington state now know, there are advantages to the state run system. See This n That. ;-)). Made our way to this Eagle liquor store (one of two in the city) with about ten minutes to spare before their 8pm weekday close time. Spacious store. Nice selection of gin and other adult beverages. Delightful, friendly young woman behind the counter who being only 19 couldn't offer us any advice on whether the local distillery gin that was on the shelf with others was good. In Idaho you can sell liquor when you're 19 although you can't buy it until you're 21. Go figure. We bought a favorite gin, price was a couple of dollars less in Idaho than we'd pay in Oregon, a bottle of tonic and we were good to go. We'll be back when bourbon season rolls around. THIS N THAT: 1) PARKING: Street parking right in front of store was easy to find. I think there is also a lot in back. 2) ACCESSIBILITY: Level in at door and throughout. 3) HOURS: Closed Sundays I think. (Although there are other liquor stores in the area that are open Sundays.) Mon - Thu 10a - 8p. Fri - Sat 10a - 9p. 4) POLITICAL RAMBLING - STATE RUN ADVANTAGE (?): I am a life long, card carrying Capitalist and on the face of things it might have seemed like a good idea to me too, were I still a WA state registered voter as I once was, to get the State out of the liquor sales business. A couple of years ago when the good people of Washington state passed measure 1138 to privatize liquor sales, I thought it would be an interesting experiment to observe since we keep talking about putting a similar measure on Oregon's ballot. Alas, what has happened is that liquor prices have gone up, in some cases WAY up, in Washington state post 1138. Folks drive to Oregon, across the border from Vancouver into Portland for example, to buy booze since it is lower priced here at our State run stores. As illustration, Portland area liquor sales have gone up dramatically since WA passed 1138. Another example is a liquor store that opened up in Kootenai County Idaho, right across the border from Spokane Washington. Since 1138 passed in Washington state, that Kootenai County Idaho liquor store has had an astronomical increase in liquor sales, thanks to folks making the less than 30 minute drive from Spokane to get there, and is now among the highest grossing liquor stores in the state of Idaho based on a recent revenue report. Politics can be enough to make you drink, don't you think? For now I'm thinking if Oregon did float a ballot measure, like Washington's 1138, to privatize liquor sales while I'm I still voting here I'd toast to "NO" looking at what's happened to our neighbors to the north.

They have helped build a great compact facility filled with what I call distillery porn... the stainless steel tanks, and the beautiful Vendome copper still, the miles of plumbing going every which way connecting everything together in a marvelous Rube Goldberg machine of liquid magic... and the rows of new American white oak barrels filled and stacked and taking the liquid magic to an entirely new level. After the great tour where Rick went above and beyond showing us the system, Larry let us taste several of their products. Wow were we impressed! From their minimally-aged moonshine, to their fully-aged bourbon, we really liked them all... so much that we bought a mixed case. This is worth a visit. Highly recommended.

The store has a clean layout with good signage that'll direct you to whatever spirit you're searching for in the store. I ended up checking out two stores and the layout is standard, which makes for a consistent experience. The staff was super helpful and reasonably informed too. I chatted up the manager about bourbon and whiskey. He knew what I was looking for and was happy to share some insights into how you can find it in the stores. The selection really surprised me in the best way possible. Considering it was state run, I wasn't sure what I'd find, but I managed to find quite a bit, along with shelf stickers for some others that had recently passed through. The pricing was even better! Super fair with lots of sales even. Again, not something I'd expected to see. All in all a nice experience. I left with a few things for friends even!

They have pretty much everything under the sun liquor from lower end items that come in plastic bottles to very high end selections as well. Plus they have a great section that is dedicated to Idaho and have really enjoyed the selections I have gotten from there. The staff as well is always friendly and helpful. The only big downer are the prices. I am used to paying anywhere from $6 to $8 more a bottle depending on selection.

While there's no docent walking you through, you're still able to see the setup and get a good feel for the distilling process at your own pace, which we enjoyed. The gift shop is impressive, with a wide variety of quality items, though it does lean a bit on the pricier side. That said, everything feels thoughtfully curated. They do offer some small snacks to order alongside your drinks, which is a nice touch if you want something light while tasting. As for the spirits, everything we tried was delicious. They offer some really solid bourbons and ryes. We also picked up some incredible Vermont maple syrup and honey made right on the grounds, which were standout additions. The staff was very knowledgeable and friendly! Highly recommended!
