Food was great, atmosphere was great, but needs better management. Only one waiter was placed in charge of all of the tables outside, and he was spread too thin. As a result we received subpar service and it was next to impossible to flag down our waiter whenever we needed something (like to order-- it took 1 entire hour before the waiter took our order from the time we sat down at our reserved table.) Cardboard boxes littered the back parking lot, blocking a slot in an otherwise full lot. Gave off a negative, messy impression when we arrived, but in retrospect was in line with the rest of the disappointments. The food saved the experience. read more

This was our first time at España's and we were blown away. The decor is welcoming, elegant, and comfortable. The waiter was the best professional waiter who treated us like we were the only customers he had, he new the food and drinks, and was able to help us decide on our choices, and was at our table at the right moments. We started with Saenz tapas that could have been a meal in itself. The goat cheese was creamy and dense with chicken and the pecan pralines gave it a nice sweet crunch that added dimension to the flavors. My husband had the sea bass and the mushrooms and peppers added taste and texture that complimented the flaky sea bass (the skin was crispy with a perfect seasoning). We compared it to fish dishes we've had at Mama's Fish House in Maui, Hawaii and España's was much better! I had the Osso Buco (lamb shank) which was tender (I only needed a fork) and had potatoes in a creamy, delicious sauce with asparagus spears in a ring of acorn squash and a sprig of rosemary that was out of this world delicious! His drink was the Holy Smoke...it came under a dome that when lifted allowed you to take in the smoke that added flavor to the drink and I had a Watermelon drink - wow, this drink was amazing, you have to have one to truly appreciate the delicacy that it is. Ending the evening with a Spanish coffee is the way to go, perfection- the right amount of sweet, cream and liquors with coffee. We will become frequent visitors, you have to try this place! read more

Amazing experience. The menu is a culinary tour de force, focused on small plates, tapas, and shareable paellas. Every item we tried was excellent. The service was terrific. Our waiter was friendly and efficient - my two favorite qualities. The wine list is well curated, and there are many well crafted cocktails. The outside patio is spacious and eclectic as you would expect with Isaac at the helm. There was live music on the (Friday) night we were there. Put this restaurant on your short list. I was excited to try this restaurant for our 5th year wedding Anniversary. We had a reservation for 7pm and the restaurant was almost empty, maybe 2 other tables and and 1 party of 10 or more. We ordered the chicken and the fish and it took over an hour to be served, my wife and I received part of our meal as we were walking out of the restaurant. The worst part of the whole experience is that out of the 2 owners/ mangers that apologized to us, one was working their butt off making sure there customers were comfortable and taking care of while the other sat at a table and was tasting wine with three young girls and the worst part of it all was that while my wife and I were waiting over and hour for our food, this owner/ manger received 4 plates of food from the kitchen and had the nerve to come over and say the kitchen was backed up because of a "big" party. Probably not going back, better off going down street and having a good meal at SALT. Also, as soon as you walked in the restaurant it smelled like a clogged toilet with mold on the side. If your going to charge me 6 dollars for a bottled beer, please make sure your restaurant doesn't smell like a clogged toilet. read more

The place is beautiful, with great live music which sets the stage for the dining experience. I was really looking forward to taste the delicious food and drinks posted by other customers. Terrible service. Unfortunately, the service was so bad that after waiting over 45 min for our appetizer, we left. When we arrived - no one greeted us. Three servers saw us waiting, not one said anything even like - be right with you. Finally, I walked further in to find one of the servers that had seen us to tell her I made reservations. The server just said ok and sat us at a two top. We were only the fourth table there. She asked what we like and I asked for menus. She rudely said to go to website to see. She took our drink and appetizer order. Like I said, only 4 tables inside. She didn't check on. She gave us our drinks and the after 30 min reconfirmed my appetizers. Then 10 min later brings our appetizers and they are cold. By this time, I'm getting upset and really not wanting to spend my anniversary dinner being disappointed with such awful service. Even after I advised the service was lacking, the server was like ok whatever. So we got our bill and headed over to Bodega. Of the apps I tried, the Saenz was really good but the escargot was cold and flavorless. But truly, if your going to spend that kind of money, you need the service to help elevate the cuisine experience. read more

This place is definitely not fine dining, set a reservation over a week ago! I called in days after the reservation to confirm it and I was told I would be receiving a call back to confirm my reservation only because the menu for Valentines was not yet ready, a week later now all real dining places are booked and España has yet to call me back to confirm, and that's because I was told I would have a for sure reservation because I set mine up in advance, I guess they just forgot about me. All the one star ratings are true if you asked me, don't waste your time or money here folks, there are real fine dining places here in McAllen they are not hard to find! My boyfriend and I came to pick up some food to go on a Friday night. From the moment we walked in, there was no one at the front to assist us. We didn't mind initially because we were still looking at the menu, however it took at least 20 minutes for someone to finally come to the front to ask if we needed help. We expected a bit of a wait considering the outside seating looked full although inside only one table was taken. We did not expect the entire 1 hour 30 minutes they took for us to finally get our order. Their service was so messy. We watched another customer walk in hoping to be seated and wait 15 minutes before resorting to walking around the restaurant to find someone to seat him. He then left after finding no one to help and the indoor seated area wasn't even busy . On top of the already extremely long wait time and subpar service, they charged an automatic 12% gratuity on our togo order. The food was good, but no food is worth the wait time and messy service we received. If you're planning on visiting I would recommend coming before you're already hungry. read more

España is, without doubt, a top-notch restaurant with delicious Spanish food. I have visited Barcelona and Mallorca - the Spaniards would be impressed with España's Paella. Fresh seafood, well-selected and perfectly prepared meats, great wine selection, exciting ambiance, beautiful art, and classy décor; España could compete in a much larger city, and we are blessed to have it in McAllen. The outdoor patio has an intimacy tucked in an historic neighborhood rather than many near traffic noise. And, Isaac Guerra, the owner, attracts top musical talent from outside of the Valley as well as the best RGV entertainers. read more
