This place has been my go to homework spot for the past 3 years of college. Service and ambiance have always been 10/10. Sadly, I don't think I'd return after today. My friend and I went before our class to take our practice exams, we had been there for about an hour when a server I hadn't seen before came up to us and asked "are you gonna order anything?" We were both in the middle of our exams so I quickly (and politely) replied "no no not right now." She then replied "just so you know that's not cool, to come in here just to study and not even order anything is so rude. I'll let you guys stay this time but next time-" My friend then cut in and said "I was here just a few hours ago and got my coffee but okay." She then started to stutter as she walked away replying "oh um it's fine then it's just a small family business so that wouldn't be cool." Because my friend and I are both in the service industry we completely understand what she was implying, what I don't understand is why she couldn't have delivered it politely. We have always treated the servers well because they were kind and deserving. Had she said something along the lines of "can I get you guys anything and just incase you aren't aware we do ask customers to make a purchase if they are going to be staying." We would have immediately gotten drinks like we usually do and told her we're sorry we were in a rush to finish our exam before our class that's about to start, and didn't feel time to stop at the counter (which I will include was empty when we walked in). I feel she could have apologized once realizing my friend had already gotten something earlier, but instead she went back behind the counter to whisper to her other coworkers which just makes the place not feel welcoming anymore. We didn't need to feel humiliated, we just needed a friendly reminder that it's mandatory to make a purchase if you want to sit. I've come here at least once a week for the past 3 years and this was the only bad experience I've had so it would be unfair to say all bad things. Many times I've been here the owner or manager has been around and he makes sure all customers are enjoying themselves, I've seen him treat artists playing on the street and even students walking by very kindly. So this review does not reflect the business in whole, rather the unprofessionalism of one employee. read more

Part of my matcha muchacha series! This place is mostly known for their hookah, but I went specifically for their Sunday morning open chess play for my son. I was told about it and wanted to check it out. They have some pretty decent chess players there! As far as the cafe is concerned, it's very artsy and has lots of character. I went to Espresso Art Cafe on University Boulevard last semester with a friend, and overall, it was a good experience. The service was excellent; the guy working there made sure my prickly pear tea (his recommendation) was just right by checking how much sugar I wanted. I appreciated that. My friend got French fries, but honestly, I wouldn't recommend them. They tasted kind of like freezer burn, and when my friend finished them, I could not continue eating them. They're not the best choice if you're looking for good fries. On the bright side, we got three free cake pops to take with us, which was nice. I love that this place is open until 12 a.m.; it's perfect for late-night study sessions. The coffee is some of the best I've had in the Tucson area so far. They always have seasonal specials, which I think is so cute. The owner is super nice, and all of the staff is super accommodating and nice. I love all the different lighting and the paintings that are scattered throughout the cafe. However, it is also a hookah lounge so it takes some getting used to in terms of the smoke. YOU GUYS REALLY NEED SOME NEW CHAIRS!!!! They are extremely uncomfortable! Really hard to sit back and smoke hookah for a long time in those hard wooden chairs with fabric covers in them. Not to mention the one I sat in first, before swapping it, was about to break. Getting a hookah and then a drink both took a VERY long time, but I was okay with it since my friend and I were there to hang out for a while. Cute place in the heart of the university area. Came here for tea and hookah on a Sunday night. Was able to get seating right away. The girl behind the counter was a delight. Hookah took a bit to get, and that was in part from a miscommunication when ordering, but the staff made it and brought a second hookah. The staff is friendly and kind, and it's obvious they care about people and doing a good job. We will definitely come back while we're in town for the jewelry shows. read more

FANTASTIC! This is a coffee shop mixed with a hookah bar. I can't speak for their coffee: Only that it's a comfy place, was great to hang out at, had the weirdest art, and the business is in a super cool old building. The hookah itself was delish. I believe my buddy ordered a minty, more blueberry flavored house blend. It tasted like blueberries with a hint of menthol. The hookah pipe itself was a traditional that didn't burn the product and it hit like Rocky Balboa. The worker knew what he was doing and made sure to rotate our coals frequently. GREAT PLACE. 10/10. This is my favorite cafe in Tucson. The lattes are good, inexpensive and the Wi-Fi is free. No, it's not the fastest place on the planet, but it's worth the wait and the conversation with the baristas. Also, the pastries are delicious! And they serve sausage and egg muffins here. Espresso Art is a darling little place on University -- a great addition to the restaurant scene. Danny, the owner, keeps a rotating art gallery, allowing local folks to show their stuff for free. And it's decent art, too! He doesn't just throw anything up on the walls. And when we're done with the summer, it is absolutely gorgeous sitting out front under the umbrellas. Really -- this cafe seems plucked right from Europe. The only complaints: The hookah and the piano. Hookah is served all day, but usually gets busy in the evening with orders. Beware those who have allergies or do not like hookah. The piano is open anytime the shop is open, which is so unfortunate. Nothing like a novice pounding away at 8:30 a.m. while many of us are just still waking up. Thanks for that. Customers here can be obnoxious sometimes. Perhaps its the location? Went to this place with high expectations. Ordered an affogato for $6.. this is the sad pathetic affogato we got. Like barely half a tablespoon of ice cream scraped into the cup as if its someone 's leftover with 1 shot of espresso. They charged 6 bucks for this shit. When asked they said oh that's how an affogato is, it's not a shake. Well, duh. I know Its not a shake, I ordered an affogato, I'm not an idiot. Along with that, paid 6 bucks for that sad looking samoan mocha. Can barely taste coconut or any milk in it, SUPER watery (you can clearly see in the pic). Had these drinks just cuz we paid 13 bucks for it but was fuming with anger the whole time. 13 bucks for these 2 things shown in the picture. Will never return and discourage others too. read more

I love this little place. I lived in Sierra Vista and would drive all the way to Tuscon just to visit. My husband and I loved the hookah and we especially enjoyed their house flavors (Ice Flower being my personal favorite). They don't offer fruit bowls or the ice hoses but honestly the shisha options they have more than make up for that. The staff was very attentive even when it was busy and would frequently check in and bring fresh coals. It's also very affordable. The bar had great drinks and the whole atmosphere was just overall pleasant. On weekends they have themed parties, karaoke, or a DJ so it's very lively. During the day the outside patio is also a nice place to relax and smoke with a coffee. We just moved to North Carolina and we have yet to find another hookah spot that even holds a candle to this cafe. We miss this place a lot so if you have the opportunity to go I highly suggest it! read more

Plenty of reading materials and Ambiance to help you wither the time away but then annoying people started hogging up the tables all throughout the day & they even started to blast annoying music, destroying the peaceful surrounding. Employees "hang around" all the time as well, which drops the service down to the toilet bowl, as they are yapping about nothing important. (+) Very good pastries. You really don't get any better for Tucson and it's actually a very unique place in the world.. Maybe conservative people might not like the vibe here, but it is by the university and not that kind of a coffee shop.. It's a super cool place to chill, study, or kick back with friends and enjoy the vibe. There's rarely any drama. They have places to sit all over and good wifi. Love the vibe here! Very kind and attentive staff.... I ordered the lavender latte which had a very lavender forward flavor which I enjoyed but the drink came a little too cool in temperature for my taste, but I really enjoyed the flavor! The back room is a speakeasy-ish style bar and I had a Bloody Mary which was quite delish and had the right amount of spice.
