I had this former funeral home and morgue converted into a bar and speak easy recommended to me by the folks at Thunder Bacon Burger down the street. I thought the place was cool looking but on this tuesday night on a hot July night at about 8:30-9 PM there were only about six folks in this basement location and after sitting at the bar for almost 15+ minutes not a sole came over to me to take a drink order. Tough Luck club is a little basement bar but has all the personality of your local Midwest dive. Their menu offers a great verity of cocktails while also offering a decent beer selection. With no obvious signage, and a location that's literally underneath our beloved Reilly's Pizza, I am going to be trite and call Tough Luck Club a good ol' fashioned speakeasy. Theirs is a fun cocktail program comprised largely of some solid classics (my negroni is always great here), and delicious guest cocktails that borrow recipes from throughout the region. There are also a few good beers. And if you're brave, you can roll the shot dice and hope you roll something good (like Mezcal). Saw this advertised as a speakeasy throughout social media and if I'm basing my review off of that, I'm unimpressed. Unlike other speakeasies I've been to, they didn't require reservation or any "special" way to get in. The menu has some interesting drink choices, but actually tasting it was a different story. I ordered the Spezzatura and it just tasted like a club soda with a splash of flavor. A friend ordered one that tasted like an air freshener. Both lacked alcohol. Bartenders weren't unfriendly, but hardly approachable. They seemed like they wanted to avoid customers for the most part. This place is more bar than speakeasy and finding it was fun and unique, especially for Tucson. I like the space, but I wouldn't return for anything else. read more

Last night my wife took me out to celebrate my birthday and this was the first stop. We arrived shortly before opening time, 6 pm, and were the first customers in. The place is located in a basement and is dark. I ordered my drink, Bikers do it meaner, and it was quite good. I went back to the bar to ask a question and stood in front of two other bartenders, a young women and guy, for five minutes and both of them ignored me. They did look at me nor speak to me. There were about six other customers in the establishment and they just would not acknowledge me. After serving in the military for over 20 years, I have been to a lot of places and have never felt so disrepected and treated like I just didn't matter. I will never be back. read more

Went here right when they opened, after eating at Reilly's upstairs. They're under the same umbrella parent company. I like cool little hidden gems like this (you have to walk through the restaurant, then through the beer garden, then down the staircase and around a couple corners to find it- definitely something you have to seek out vs randomly coming across it walking down the street). If you see a bright painting of a pug wearing a cone on its head, you're going in the right direction. My friend tried two of their cocktails - a Manhattan and a dirty martini. They have booth seating and seating all along the bar. Dimly lit, cute menus but I think they'd be cuter if they weren't paper that got easily crinkled :) read more

I think I am a super fan, after one visit. It took me a year to check this place out after someone on a plane recommended it but I am so glad I did. We had dinner upstairs so it totally made sense that we go downstairs for drinks after. You go through the restaurant and beer garden down these stairs to the basement. The bar is a long bar with booths set up against the wall. We loaded down two tables and went for at least three rounds on this visit. The special for the night was 'Coors & whiskey shot' for $4. Like, who can beat that deal? It is not what I had but a couple people in our party took advantage of that. I had awesome drink (I had 2, potentially 3) that was Vodka with 'stuff' in it and 2 bamboo type leaves. Honestly, it was so good but I can't remember the name. I got the feeling they change up the cocktail menu often. My sister-in-law ordered 'Firing Squad' and it was delicious after I snuck a sip. Ok everyone who is giving this joint bad reviews because it isn't a "real" speakeasy need to sit down, get on Etsy to buy yourselves a better hobby, and shut up. I've been to the real real. The red light in a basement window in North Portland. The Chicago apartment that only serves beer trucked in (as in pickup) from Wisconsin. Chinatown kitchen back entrance in New York? Check. Sketchy AF call a number leave a message warehouse parties in Detroit? Check. Naked gogos through a metal grate in D.F.? Check. Don't make me go on. Just because the nice woman at the host booth didn't make you say Donald Duck and tap on the wall 3 times doesn't mean you aren't getting the real deal and if you need a literal secret password experience to get what a cool bar this is then you are a child, should not be drinking anyway, and Disneyland is half a day West. To the person who said it was fun to find and a good experience and then gave 2(!) stars I hope whatever god you worship sees fit to find mercy on your boring entitled soul. Ok the bar. The bar is great. Booths on one side and the bar with seating running the full length of a small but not cramped space. The cocktails looked great but I did not try them as I am not a cocktail girlie but I almost did because they have an entire section of the cocktail menu with drinks going to mutual aid for hospitality workers worldwide which I have never seen anywhere. I did have (twice) the special which is a 12 oz Coors Banquet in a can and a shot of surprisingly drinkable well whiskey neat for $6. In the year of our lord 2023 if you ask a bartender for something and they hand you 2 drinks for $6 you have discovered a secret password whether they asked you at the door or not. Get it together. Lighting was low, music was present but not blaring, bathrooms are clean and spacious, and oh yeah you are in a basement which Tucson, AZ does not have really so feel free to try to recreate this experience anywhere within a 100 mile radius because you won't be able to and should appreciate what you have instead. On the Friday of parents weekend at the U of A with hoards of suburban zombies roaming the streets and a packed pizza restaurant upstairs it was a small self-selecting group of chillers in the basement enjoying great hospitality and cold drinks. 10/10 haters stay away. read more

We did a beer crawl in downtown Tucson, Az. There are so many incredible new places. I went to the University of AZ many years ago and of course didn't have all these nightlife options. This place was our first stop of the night. The history is interesting. My brother said the building used to be a Mortuary with the crematorium in the basement. It is now a pizza place and bar. We decided not to eat here but have a drink in their Speakeasy downstairs bar. What a cool place. The bar downstairs is where the crematorium used to be so it was freaky fun seeing the closed in walls. The drinks were unique and the atmosphere was great. It is also a huge place with several different rooms. I really enjoyed this place but didn't give it 5Stars for 2 reasons. One-we didn't sit or eat in the restaurant so I didn't feel like I could rate it. The second reason is that although I liked that the drinks were different, I didn't think they offered enough sweet options. The only one I saw on the drink menu in the downstairs bar was a Strawberry Daiquiri. That drink is pretty generic for such a unique bar. The bartender took such care & pride when making these crazy drinks that I'm sure they can come up with more novel options for a sweeter palette. Other than that, this place is fun & very different for Tucson. I definitely recommend it and would love to return to try the restaurant! read more

A small little tavern in the basement of Reilly's pizza. On a week-night Tough Luck Club is an intimate and quirky place to have a drink. On the weekends, this place is so small it gets busy quickly. I definitely prefer the weeknight vibe but I'm not one for a weekend bar adventure anyhow. Our most recent visit was on a Tuesday night, post dinner at Reilly's like many who come here. If you're into dark and moody bars that make you feel like you're taking a break from your epic fantasy quest, this is the place for you. Or if you want to get dressed up like you're in the 1920's and pretend you're sneaking away to the local speakeasy...which I'm sure is more so along the lines of the initial theme of the place. Either way it's a great place to have a drink on a quiet night. They have a well-stocked bar and friendly bartenders. I don't think they have this feature unless it is hidden behind some secret entrance somewhere, but a private room to host themed dinner parties would be amazing. read more

A hidden cozy bar in Arizona! When my friend told me it used to be a morgue, I was a bit afraid of going to it... but it actually turned out to be the perfect environment for a snug place to drink with friends! They have a very creative special, so make sure to try that. I noticed a younger crowd there, so it may get a little bit rowdy if you go later in the night.
