I contracted Roy's landscaping to renovate my garden. This was a significant tear out and rebuilding job, which took them several weeks to complete using a crew of 3 to 4 people. Roy had a tear out team and another team of masons for the stone work. Everyone was very considerate and hard working. To begin, I met with Roy a couple of times and we walked the garden and discussed what was to be done. I had an old waterfall and pond (both concrete) that leaked and over time this had caused my redwood trees to break the drains under my old patio. Damage was done to the patio as well. I needed all new drains, a new flagstone patio and wanted dry stack looking stone walls and new steps going up to the rear garden area. Roy listened to my requests , added some ideas (lights in the walls, designing the slope and curve to the walls, adding pony walls by the new steps, etc). He then provided me with a detailed project proposal and cost estimate for each part of the job. Roy's proposal was not the cheapest, but as he promised (and did) it was the best. Roy and his team did an outstanding job in completing the work. They started and completed the job within the estimated timeframe. Every day the crew was here early, with a supervisor on site. Roy also came by about every other day to meet with me and his team. Where they found issues outside of the scope of the original statement of work (i.e.: tree roots had destroyed drains all the way to the street) we discussed what needed to be done and agreed up front on how to proceed and the additional cost. No surprises at the end. Each day the crew cleaned up after themselves and care was taken not to damage other parts of the garden (plants, etc). They also were considerate about my need to get my car in and out of the driveway through out all the construction. One thing I was really concerned with was drainage for the patio as my back yard slopes toward the house. Roy made sure this was addressed and the patio drains beautifully. The stone work that his team did here was nothing short of superb. My back yard is beautiful and easy to care for now. Bottom line, I found this company to be very professional and highly skilled. A couple of years later, he installed a dry creek bed. He answered my calls promptly when I had irrigation problems and care problems regarding the new plants. Although we were not able to afford a new irrigation system, he made modifications and has been available to troubleshoot and help with any and all problems. You would be hard pressed to find a landscaping company better than Roy's. When we bought our home in 2006, Roy designed our three different outdoor areas: front yard, courtyard, and backyard, and his company not only did all the landscaping but all the hardscape (stone work) as well. Roy has a designer's eye and a great sense of color and balance. Since the initial installation, Roy's company continues to do the maintenance for our property. His crew of three men come every week for 40 minutes and what they do each week far exceeds the "mow & blow" gardening service. They are diligently working the entire time they are here, taking the initiative to prune, trim, deadhead roses and other plants, and fertilize when necessary. Even though he is not here on a weekly basis, Roy is hands-one and definitely manages what his men are doing. Roy's landscaping has a talented and hardworking team of full service employees; The service includes landscape design, masonry artists, building retaining walls, irrigation, pruning, and routine maintenance. We were in need of some major help and didn't know where to begin. I knew the yard was going to be a challenging project from start to finish. We have very rocky and poor quality soil, steep eroding slopes, old, rangy bushes and lots of animals to consider when planning the design. Before starting the project, Roy made sure that he understood my desires. From that information, his artistic vision took over. He offered great suggestions as well as working with the ideas that we had. Most importantly, Roy understood that I wanted a landscape design which was consistent with and supportive of our country environment. He was willing to incorporate and utilize a lot of natural materials from our property i.e. rocks and plants into the design. The goal was to promote a much needed balance between nature and our lifestyle. Roy was very professional, organized and on schedule. His crew of employees were conscientious and thorough, always leaving the site clean. The project was finished in a timely manner. I recently terminated a two-year relationship with Roy's Landscaping and felt compelled to write a review to balance the 5-star reviews that appear to have been solicited in response to the first review by Len H. (1-star). My overall impression is that the problems that I experienced with Roy's were due to a lack of management and a focus on generating fees rather than on quality landscaping and client service. Roy's was initially hired by my general contractor to install my landscape and they did a satisfactory job. I subsequently hired them for regular maintenance and also for two smaller construction projects. The construction projects were completed satisfactorily. They were fixed-bid projects and based on the actual time it took to complete, I was grossly overcharged. My experience with time-and-materials projects was no better: for example, the most recent project cost twice the original estimate. Roy himself was knowledgeable in horticulture and landscape construction; however, the expertise stopped there. Although the maintenance crew was stable with only a few changes, there appeared to be no training and little management of the crew. Unfortunately the lack of management was a significant problem in the maintenance of my landscape. I had high hopes when Roy hired Laura as the "landscape designer/operations manager" and communication did improve in that she responded promptly to my messages, whereas Roy rarely responded. I expected someone, whether Roy, Laura or the maintenance crew head to monitor the health of my plants and devise a program for taking care of them. I found that that did not happen and I had to assume that role. Some examples: * There were errors and omissions on every plant order and I had to spend my time correcting them and inspecting plant deliveries. * When I pointed out a half-dead plant to both the crew head and Laura, I got a shrug and a response of "some plants just don't do well." I later checked the irrigation myself and found that the plant was not getting any water - this should have been the first thing that they checked. * I discovered a vine and a lemon tree both had severe infestations of scale which I treated myself - this should have been noticed and treated by Roy's. The final incident occurred when my three large tree roses were sprayed supposedly with insecticide. Within two days the leaves had turned brown and the flowers had changed color. I sent a picture to Roy and Laura and received a response that I could pay for Laura's time to come over to take samples of the plant and also the offer of books on roses. I took samples myself to the garden center and was told that the plants had been burned by the spray. Within a week the roses had lost all of their leaves and the other plants in the vicinity of the spray were also losing their leaves. Two weeks after the spraying, I insisted that Roy come over to look at the damage and his response was "just pretend it's winter" (this in the middle of summer when my roses should have been in full bloom). At this point Roy should have taken responsibility and replaced the plants but he did nothing. Finally, a month later and after several messages with photos of dead plants from me, he agreed to replace the plants. In the end I lost trust and confidence in Roy's ability and desire to maintain my landscape, to take responsibility for their work, and to charge fair prices. read more

I have a hillside wine estate property, with many challenging tasks required for maintenance and beautiful and creative landscaping. I tried 3 landscaping companies before who could not do the job. I even used the landscaper considered to be the best, who charged me twice the price and took twice the time to do the job. Roy's Landscaping was then referred to me by a happy client of his. It has now been 10 years with Roy! He is fabulous. His is a very tough job, especially with a complex property. So many things can and do go wrong, usually having nothing to do with the landscaper. Roy and his crew are dedicated and hard workers. And even when something went wrong, as when a bush died early, Roy replaced it free of charge! He always has bent over backwards to satisfy me. Of course, occasionally a worker would take a leave of absence or be out for other reasons, but the crews have been the same for years, with replacement workers being other regulars. I have referred Roy to a number of neighbors who also had been unhappy with their landscapers. They all raved about Roy's work and personalized service. Roy really cares, and his prices are among the best, especially considering the quality of work he provides. Further, he takes care of everything, without me having to go to "specialists" and pay a fortune for extra services. For example, I wanted a long stone wall and entry gate with stone columns. Roy did a fantastic job. I wanted a creatively designed stream and small pool for my dog, fed by a natural-looking stone waterfall. Roy did an amazing job. I wanted an olive orchard, a fruit orchard, and a berry farm, all with irrigation and installation. Roy did it all, and did a fantastic job. I wanted an original rustic patio and wine room. Roy did it again and another fabulous job. And on and on. all at prices that were a fraction of what I was quoted by others. I don't ever look for anyone else, as long as Roy says that he can do the job. If Roy says that a given request is out of his wheelhouse, he is honest and finds me someone who is also great--like when I needed replacement of some ornate railings. In summary, Roy's is a 1-stop company for all landscaping needs--owned and operated by the best and most honest person I have ever worked with.
