I would say that Ethan Hair Salon will be the best place to go! I got my haircut from hair stylist Justin and he was awesome. He know exactly what type of hair & style I have right away. I feel like I've finally grown up, just a little bit. I had never been to a real hair stylist (is that what they call them?) before in my life. I saw a local barber, then Supercuts, then local variants of Supercuts, until this past month. The former manager of a SoPo Supercuts, Robin, convinced me to give her a shot at Ethan Hunter Salon, which is on the upper floor of the building across from Gritty's in the Old Port. Considering the hundreds of drunken walks I've taken down that street over the years, I was shocked I had never heard of it. There's a garage next door with validated parking, whick is key. And sure enough there it was, the Ethan Hunter sign. Let's just say it's a step up from Supercuts. While waiting for my appointment they offered free bourbon and wine (the "free" part makes it legal, hopefully). My hair isn't exactly a tower of curls, but Robin did an awesome job, and a shampoo comes with it. I know that sounds basic, but it's more than I've ever had before. Total price, $25. Nearly the same price as Supercuts. The salon itself is beautiful and all of the other stylists were friendly as can be. So I finally get a real haircut. Justin did an awesome job on my hair. It was clear he has extensive training and was even able to explain aspects of how he cut my hair that would make it easier to style. After years of going to a high priced salon, spending hundreds of dollars each time and ending up with the same cut and color (despite bringing in pictures or having suggestions for a different look), I decided to try a new salon. It had been a long time since I had had a really good haircut. One that feels right all over and grows out well. I'm from California and remembered back when Vidal Sassoon was in vogue and I got a great haircut once from one of his students. I looked online for a Sassoon trained hairdresser and found Ethan Hunter Salon. Justin was the man! I walked in with a messy mop and left with a precision haircut with a great style. SHORT STORY: I had the best haircut of my life by Justin. If you have a chance to get your haircut by him, take it. You will not be disappointed. LONG STORY: When I walked into the salon for the first time, what a warm and welcoming space it was. I couldn't help but notice the beautiful chair I sat in for the cut and I commented on it. Justin told me that the previous owner of what had been a men's barbershop was throwing it out. It was original to the space, probably from the 1920s. Justin immediately saw the beauty others overlooked. He had the handles re-porcelained, top quality leather put on the seat cushions and transformed what was once trash into treasure. He brings the same care and attention to his customers' hair. I entered the salon with a hairstyle I had for many years and left feeling transformed. Justin took the time to have a real conversation with me about my hair. He talked about the texture and asked me questions that no stylist had asked me before. As one of the other reviews suggests, the Ethan Hunter Salon is a bit hidden. Because it's on the second floor, you don't walk by thinking about it, there's a small sandwich-board sign on Fore St. but that's about it. Then you walk up a flight of stairs and there's this old-fashioned metal door latch (which I operated awkwardly the first time, okay still) that opens to a beautiful space with all the exposed brick you would expect, windows that overlook Fore Street, and someone always saying "hello" to you, regardless of what they're doing. As for the haircut, I see Justin and he consistently gives me the most wonderful haircuts at a very inexpensive price. It's the kind of place that once you find it, you don't want to let anyone in on your secret, which is why I've been reluctant to review it, but you have to give credit where credit is due. So happy I found the Ethan Hunter Salon. read more

I have been going to Donna at Ethan Hunter for years. Not only is she a great hairstylist, she's amazingly funny and comforting to be around. I love her so much that I plan my trips back to Maine to coordinate with my hair cuts. Some may say that's sad, but I just haven't found anyone in NYC that does her quality of work! Not only has DJ done a fabulous job on my cut and color--but I TRUST her with my hair. I have curly hair that has spent a lot of time in the sun, in the ocean, in the pool, and is abused by my hair elastics and non-committment to ponytails (up&down alll day long). STYLE- DJ crops my hair just right, to keep the fullness that I want. She also styles it to compliment my round face. My hair is curly too--- it is very hard to find a stylist that can understand the unruly and unpredictable CURL. COLOR- DJ knows creative color. More importantly she know creative color that LOOKS NATURAL. I get beachy highlights complimented with low lights. The way she foils makes the color look natural--not streaky and blocky. Often times people are shocked when I tell them it's not my real color. PRODUCT- I have fallen in LOVE with Morroccan Oil products. DJ told me about them--they are perfect for my dry locks. She also beleves in her product lines--she doesn't pressure you into buying some goop to throw on your head. WAX- I have a forest above my eyes and DJ sculpts it into eyebrows! So, DJ is the real deal. And she has great personality! That goes a long way. A true professional--with good taste. read more

I recently relocated to New Hampshire from New Jersey and needed to find a new stylist. I tried out a number of different ones in Portsmouth New Hampshire. I am quite particular about my haircuts and I could not find any locations to my liking. I travel often for work and I have been to salons in many different states. I was a new client to E/H Salon and am so happy I went. Jessica is a miracle-worker! I had some serious hair repair to attend to and wanted a major change, to boot. She was able to give me a super flattering, fashion-forward, and well-executed cut that did wonders for the quarantine malaise and major correction I needed! She also did a fantastic job on the color (roots to ends) that took into account my skin tone, maintenance concerns, and the exact look I was going for (deep violet-y brunette)! In addition, she is a lovely and kind human being who really listened to what I wanted and took the time to make sure I was happy. Staff seemed nice, didn't really talk much to my hairstylist (wasn't one of the Hunter's.) Haircut came out good, but for a trim, $60 from someone who isn't the salon owner/master stylist is a little higher than I would normally like. But overall, nothing wrong with my experience! I have been going to Ethan Hunter pretty much since I moved to Maine 6 years ago, based on a friend's recommendation. Justin and Jessica, the co-owners, as well as DJ are always very friendly and professional. The shop is a very cool looking loft space, overlooking Fore Street and is very easily accessible, located right in the heart of the Old Port. Parking is right next door and they even provide validation to boot. However, what I like most about Ethan Hunter, are the people and the fact that they never take your business for granted. They provide a great overall experience, excellent hair cut and they always thank you for your business. I would strongly recommend Ethan Hunter Salon, for those looking for such and experience.
