It's been a while I had Ethiopean food and I took my friend from out of town to impress her with their amazing platter. Ordered veg +meat combo platter. My friend was impressed. However My knowlege of Ethiopean food is very shallow, I only know some names such as "Tibs"( meat fried with butter, garlic , onion & pepper), "Injera"(fermented flat bread) "Doro Wat" "Awaze"(sauce), etc. Their menu description in English was very confusing. Almost all the meat dishes had different names but they were mostly sauteed with butter, garlic, onion & pepper. Wait staff was trying to explain that there are various options of meat such as spicy, non spicy, ground meat version, etc. but I was not even sure, I was served with what I actually chose. For example, if you look at #60 &#61, only difference I see is one is served on sizzling plate. However their names are completely different. 60. I went to Rendez-vous recently and enjoyed myself. I had a solo combination plate that included some vegetarian dishes, salad, as well as 1 meat dish. The veggie dishes were good and included tikil gomen (cabbage with carrot), gomen (collards), keyser (beets and potatoes), and potato with carrot. For the meat, there are several choices. I chose the lamb Nech Tibis, which was a bit too tough and overcooked for my liking, and didn't have much flavor. I wouldn't choose this again. Service was good, kind and accommodating. SO SO SO SO GOOD. Everytime I come back, I feel like it tastes better than what I remembered. We got the Veggie Combo, Meat Combo and Doro Wot. This was easy to share with 3 people and all of us were full as we asked for more of the Injera. The injera has an interesting spongey texture and complements every dish so well. Anyone that wants to try Ethiopian food should come here and be prepared to eat with your hands and get dirty! Also recommend having it with a beer, the best combo their beer bottles are also not inflated like crazy ($4-$6.50 a bottle) so eat and drink to your hearts content. Note: we subbed out the Kitfo (raw beef) from the meat platter for some Cha Cha Tibs as my friend cannot eat raw beef but would love to try it next time! read more

This was my first time trying Ethiopian food, and it was fantastic! First off, the ambiance was great with nice mood lighting and vibey music. My coworkers and I came for dinner around 5:30pm on a weeknight, so it was quiet and no resos needed. My friend who was well versed in Ethiopian food gave me a quick run down of the menu and I ended up getting the Rendez Vous Special Tibes with potatoes. The dish consisted of beef chunks with onion, garlic, green pepper and potato. The beef was flavourful, but a bit tough in my opinion. Next time, I'll for sure go for the Rendez Vous Solo, which comes with a choice of meat and a few veggies. My dish specifically only came with a small side salad. The dish might not look big, but holy with the Injera, it was super filling, and I even got to bring home leftovers for dinner the next day. Overall, it is a hearty affordable meal. The food was a 5 for me, but service was a 1. Given that we visited during the height of the omicron variant (Jan 2022), Canada had pretty strict restrictions and mask mandates. That being said, we felt very unsafe with our waitress being unmasked and her constant coughing without covering her mouth. I felt that she was also rude and impatient with us. It was my family's first time trying Ethiopian food, so we asked for some recommendations from the menu. She made it seem like we were doing her a huge inconvenience despite us being the only seated party at the time. I don't quite know what we even ordered because she half-heartedly pointed at several dishes so we just went with her recommendations. We had to wait a very long time before getting our food and noticed that those who ordered takeout were waiting for quite a while as well. On the bright side, the food was pretty darn good. The flavors were different than what I was used to, but I enjoyed it. As Asians, we're used to eating warm food, so we wished that the injera bread was warm but understand that it's probably just nothing how it's supposed to be served. The texture of it is so light and spongey, almost pillowlike. The taste of it is slightly sour, but no different than the way that sourdough is. First I must say, I'd never had Ethiopian food before this visit and didn't know what to expect. I had seen videos and pictures and to be honest I wasn't sure if I'd like it. Now I can say, I've tried it and that it's really good! I thought it'd be a mostly vegetarian meal but I was pleasantly surprised to see it was much more than that. My boyfriend wanted Ethiopian food for his birthday dinner so off I searched for the best Ethiopian restaurant. I came across Rendez-vous on Yelp and made a reservation. Upon arrival, I was a bit overwhelmed by how packed the restaurant was and coming in during a pandemic to this was a bit unsettling. The restaurant itself is narrow and long so seating was a bit tight but workable. We figured we were here to enjoy food and we just had to be extra cautious so we stayed. There was a slight hiccup in my reservation as they had misheard the amount of people we had in our party so we ended up having to wait an additional 45 minutes. Not so happy but we stuck with it as they checked in on us often to apologize. Once seated, the service was great and friendly. The food I must say was a pleasant surprise. Yes they had a slew of vegetarian dishes but also a ton of meat dishes as well. The injera (Ethiopian flat bread) was good, light and spongey which complimented the flavours of the dishes, soaking up all the spices. All the meat dishes were so good and when I say this I'm not joking. I'm not generally a lamb person so when my friends told me to try it, I was hesitant. I don't like gamey flavoured meat and my experiences with lamb are generally gamey. They convinced me to try it and said it didn't have that flavour at all. I've always loved Ethiopian food conceptually - communal, hands-on, comforting - but the extent of my exposure to it was Bloor West. Nothing wrong with those spots. I've frequently brought friends to Lalibela and watched them enjoy themselves. But not until eating at Rendez-Vous on the other end of the city had I ever understood how delicious Ethiopian food can be. One of the things I've enjoyed most about eating Ethiopian is the diversity of flavours you get on a single plate (or expansive portion of injera). You can order any dish on its own, but the fun for me is juggling flavours and combinations. That's why I ordered at Rendez-Vous the same thing I always order at any Ethiopian restraint - the plate for one. This included 4 veggie selections (spinach, beets, potato & carrot, salad) and 1 meat selection (I got the kitfo). It looks like a lot of food when it arrives, and it feels like double the amount of food it looked like when it's all in your stomach. I can't remember the last time I've felt so full. Don't quote me on this, but I heard somewhere that injera expands in your stomach, so maybe that explains it. Every bite I had was phenomenally delicious. The kitfo offered that bouncy chew that only raw beef has, spiced in an attention-grabbing way. When tossed in niter kibbeh (a sort of infused clarified butter), the result is a powerfully filling and satisfying dish that's hard to find comparisons for. In truth, everything tasted like more than the sum of its parts. Even the simple green salad somehow tasted exciting, the onion cutting the other heavier flavours. Unfortunately, I was so hungry I ate everything before remembering to take a picture. The service was extremely friendly, with a server who took obvious pride in the food on offer happy to talk about it. Oh, and their espresso was also perfect. Will definitely be back. read more

After trying Ethiopian at Addis Ababa in London, Ontario, and thoroughly enjoying the experience, I was very excited for Ethiopian downtown at Rendez-Vous. The restaurant is fairly small and narrow, and very dimly lit. The tables are cramped and the atmosphere lit by eerie red lights, with moderately loud music playing in the background. My friend and I shared the vegetarian platter along with an order of doro wat, a stewed chicken in spices with a boiled egg. The injera (sour flatbread with holes and bubbles) was a good vessel for scooping up the food, and its sour taste was fairly penetrating. There were some interesting vegetarian sides, mostly consisting of potatoes, lentils, beans, or cabbage in stewed or mashed form. The veggies were lighter and a great palate cleanser. The doro wat, however, was fairly disappointing. There was a potent mixture of spices, making it very difficult to pinpoint any one flavour. There was also a measly one piece of drumstick - I had expected more meat, and it was quite impossible to share the drumstick in bone among two people. Overall, a nice and interesting meal, but definitely not the most tasty Ethiopian I've ever had. read more

I've come here many times over the past couple of years and love it! Staff is always friendly, knowledgeable on the menu, and provide quality and timely service. The food has been consistently very good each time I've gone and is full of flavour. I prefer to eat in person because the presentation is so beautiful but I do take-out sometimes too, especially since the pandemic. Restaurant is very cozy and they have a some outdoor seating as well which was nice during the summer. My go to (which I highly recommend) is the Derek beef tibes and the veggie combo, which comes with small portions of vegetarian dishes. It's the perfect mix of everything! I find it enough for two people with some extra. Leftovers taste just as good especially since the Injera has had more time to soak up all the flavoury goodness! They also give you plenty of Injera which is like a spongy fermented flat bread that you use to eat with. On my most recent visit we were feeding 5 people so we got the meat (beef) combination and chose Derek tibes, Key tibes, and Nech tibes as our three options. We also got two veggie combos which all came up to about 75$ with taxes and tip. Just like on my previous visits, it did not disappoint! I cannot wait to go back! read more

I dare you to try something new and experience Ethiopian food at Rendez-Vous! Roll up your sleeves and dig into a traditional feast with your hands. //THE ATMOSPHERE// Super dark, aromatic, eclectically decorated, and slightly dingy. Coming in on a Sunday night, I didn't know what to expect! The restaurant was quite full with lots of local Toronto Ethiopians. It was neat that the servers brought out a pan of roasting coffee beans and walked it around the entire restaurant which gave it a very smokey & earthy vibe. The servers were also very attentive. //THE FOOD// We ordered a VEGETARIAN PLATTER to share amongst 3 of us. The servers also asked how many of us were sharing to ensure there was enough food for everyone. It came out on huge plate with a large injera (Ethiopian flatbread) under a colourful circle of veggie sides. It included mashed/stewed lentils, chickpeas, potatoes, beets, carrots, collard greens, split peas, cabbage, and tomato salad. It was so exciting to try each side because it was always a surprise of what the flavours, spiciness, and textures would be! They also served 3 additional flatbreads on the side so you can tear it apart and use to scoop up the food to eat. The flatbreads were like nothing I've tried before...it tasted like sourdough, but in a squishy thick crepe form. It also had a spongey bubbly texture that was great for soaking up all the sauces from the side dishes (yay!) but it would also easily disintegrate with how soggy it got (boo). Along with our vegetarian platter, we ordered some meats which they piled in the middle of our platter. We had the AWAZE TIBS (stewed lamb), DORO TIBS (cubed sautéed chicken), and CHA CHA (charboiled beef). My absolute favourite was the lamb, it was so tender & marinated with the special Ethiopian mix of herbs & spices, and the juices that seeped out of it was finger-licking good! My 2nd favourite was the chicken, it was also seasoned well and moist. The beef was disappointing as it was tough & dry, and the cook on it was borderline burnt. //OVERALL// This was my first time having Ethiopian food and I enjoyed every bite of it! It's a shame that the restaurant is so dark, so I couldn't fully appreciate all the vibrant colours of our dishes. First time trying Ethiopian food! I was obsessed with how cool these plates of food on a giant crepe looked, so obviously I had to try it. As 2 people, we ordered the Doro wat (spicy chicken) and a vegetarian platter (lots of lentils, salad, beets, chard, and other unidentifiable mush). Both were about $14/each. We had so much food we grabbed some to go! Service was okay but really friendly. Our food took 30 minutes to arrive. I would have really appreciated an explanation of all the food on the plate and maybe a quick how-to on eating this with the bread/your hands. I came here for 11:00AM but there was no one in the front to seat us and after about 10 minutes I went to the back to look for the waitress/hostess. I didn't know what to order but from the reviews on yelp my friend and I ordered a vegetarian and meat platter which ended up being $19.20 for each of us. When the food arrived after about 20 minutes my friend and I couldn't believe our eyes, there was so much food! We had enough to take home a good amount between the both of us. I loved the lentils and the different types of meats, two of them were spicy and so flavourful! I had the leftovers later today and they were still pretty good. Step 1: Don't be intimidated by Ethiopian food. Step 2: Invite this highly delicious cuisine into your life! Named #1 Best Ethiopian Restaurant by blogTO, I had to find out what all of their wats and tibs were about. You'll find this restaurant located in the East Danforth area of the city and I happily paid them a visit on a Sunday evening. I had made a reservation, which isn't a bad idea because every table in the place was full by the time that we left. The first thing that I noticed upon entering is that the space is small and dimly-lit with a very enticing vibe. The second thing that I noticed is the giant Italian flag on the floor made out of tile in the shape of Italy - clearly this had once been an Italian restaurant. We were seated at a table and I took in the alluring surroundings. The walls are painted a rust colour and are covered in gorgeous photography of Africa. There are some very cozy booths near the back that are covered with appropriately-themed thatched roofs. But it was the dim lighting that added a certain mystique that I enjoyed very much. Our servers were friendly and helpful with any questions that we had. I love seeing authentic beverages in restaurants like this, as opposed to the basic selection that you find everywhere. Their Special Spiced Tea sounded very good and I will definitely try it on a future visit. They also do traditional coffee ceremonies that serve four to six people. I decided to try a glass of Tej (Brewed and consumed in Ethiopia and Eritrea. It is flavoured with the powdered leaves and twigs of Gesho (Rhamnus prinoides) - $7.50), an Ethiopian Honey Wine. I loved this! The Gesho plant is a type of shiny-leaf buckthorn and the flavour reminded me a lot of ice wine, with it's syrupy-sweetness. This is exactly the type of wine (or mead) that I enjoy. Candy in a glass! Onto the array of foods! Ethiopian food is similar to Indian food in the sense that forks are not meant to be used and instead bread is used to pick up the various items. This bread is called injera and it's very much like a crêpe made of sourdough. The dishes themselves are largely prepared as curries, some quite stew-like in nature. As with anything, you should try everything and you'll soon figure out which ones are your favourites. We tried to order some Sambusas as an appetizer (similar to a samosa) but were told that they didn't have any. That was a bit disappointing. However, we were happy to find versions of many of the other dishes that we have enjoyed in the past on Rendez-Vous' menu; Ye'beg Tibs ($13.99), Tikilgomen ($10.99), and Doro Wat ($13.99). Our platter arrived after a short wait, with folds of injera along side. There's always injera laid out flat (a huge circle) on the bottom of the plate with all of the various dishes served on top of it (this injera is the most delicious because it soaks up all of the juices!). There's also always some salad served with the meal. There was a little bit of table-side preparation involved as our server emptied some of our wats and tibs onto the platter. Everyone at the table eats off of the same big plate and we were so excited to dig in! As previously mentioned, there is no cutlery in sight. Instead, you tear off pieces of injera to pick your food up with. I loved their spongy, porous injera full of amazing sourdough flavour. Ye'beg Tibs is a good standby; cubes of tender lamb sauteed with onions, garlic, green pepper and awaze. Awaze is a spicy sauce made with chili peppers. I liked that they didn't hold back on the spice - the dishes were as firey as they were intended to be and I enjoyed that. This dish was a full mouth-blast of flavour. The pieces of lamb were tender as promised and tasted great with the vegetables and spicy sauce. Tikilgoman is one of our very favourites; cabbage, carrot, and potatoes in mild sauce. Yes, a vegetarian dish. In fact, Ethiopian cuisine usually entails quite a lot of vegetarian dishes, making it a wonderful place for vegetarians to dine easily. This version of Tikilgoman was the best dish of the night! The vegetables were stewed to a tender perfection and the sauce that they're served in was a buttery, delicious dream. The strips of cabbage are just the best. Lastly, we tried the Doro Wat, Ethiopia's national dish; spicy chicken sauce cooked with butter, onion, chili, garlic and other spices; often served with a boiled egg. This one was also quite spicy. The chicken involved was one solitary chicken leg, which seemed a little sparse. On the other hand, leg meat is the best and it was fall-off-the-bone delicious. I enjoyed the inclusion of a hard-boiled egg, because really, eggs and chicken make sense together. The salad was also very fresh, crisp and well-dressed. It's nice to have that added bright component on the plate to balance out all of the heaviness. At one point a server came through the restaurant with a smoking pan of Ethiopian coffee beans. The food, ambience and location are excellent at this place. I had the beef combo plate, the machiatto and a regular coffee and it was all excellent. My table mates were also very happy with their food. Not sure if the staff were having an off day, but the service seemed very slow. My friend and I went here for dinner at around 7pm on Friday night. I made a reservation and we were seated right by the bathrooms even though the restaurant was mainly vacant. My friend arrived on time and I arrived about ten minutes later. It took quite some time for the waitress to come by and ask if we wanted anything to drink after I sat down - at least ten minutes. When she eventually took our drink order, we asked for a couple more minutes to pick what we'd be eating. Another whole ten minutes passed before she came by again. After we had ordered, our food took a long time to come out. On top of that, the table next to us was receiving entree and entree. Although they were seated before us, we were one of maybe four parties there. You eat Ethiopian food with your hands. About ten minutes into eating our meal, another waitress comes by and drops off cutlery for us, assuming that we were not comfortable eating Ethiopian traditionally (with our hands). I'm sure she had good intentions, but just because we are visibly Caucasian doesn't mean we don't want the full traditional experience. The food was ok at best as well. The food is 5-star -- best Ethiopian in Toronto, except for the worms crawling in the fresh salad greens + the unripe tomatoes.(Keep tomatoes out of the fridge, then they'll ripen). My beef is that I was a weekly customer for over a decade and that they made an error, didn't fix it + left me in the lurch. I can't believe how my loyalty was so easily dismissed + I've not been back. The error had to do with the injera, which is traditionally made with gluten-free teff flour. Well, at some point they started adding wheat + barley to it. I explained that celiacs + GF peeps would come here because they had a GF-facility until that point. They didn't seem to care + continued to go down the road to get me teff injera. My last visit, they gave me the wheat added injeera after we specified for it to be teff only; I found out after I'd taken the order home to eat. I explained how dangerous that could be for celiacs but they just shrugged. No sorry, no interest, no replacement, no nothing. After this weeks UYE at Nazareth, which I could not attend. I have been dreaming of Ethiopian fare. Fast forward to Friday and I am begging the SO to take me to Ethiopian. Unlike most Ethiopian restaurants, the food took a very reasonable 25 min to arrive at our table, and the server was checking on us often. We split a beef tibs (for him) and a Veggie platter for me. The food was just as good as last time with a WIDE variety of currys. Seriously we had at least 10 different tastes. We were stuffed silly with food left to spare. This is a little gem of a place. Laid back restaurant but also could double as a sports bar. We went for lunch when there was a soccer game on so quite a few people checking out the game. The food is good - lots of flavours that just melt in your mouth. We got the lentils which were yummy and had a nice citrus finish to them, spiced ground beef which was good and had a tiny bit of heat (we asked for medium spicy) and the lamb. The lamb was my least fave only because I felt it was overcooked, but the flavour was there. Ethiopian way of eating is shared eating - food comes on a huge plate and everyone shares. I went to Toronto for the first time and we had an amazing spicy Kitfo, cha cha cha (the best one) and spinach rib (tibse) was excellent!!! The service was outstanding by the very friendly servers and by the owner including Ethiopian coffee ceremony. My and my boyfriend love this place! We usually get Lega Tibs with spinach. It's our go-to order. They have a bunch of options in the menu. The best thing about this restaurant is the service and ambiance. The staff are super welcoming, we became regulars because we often visit and the experience is always good. We get occasional hellos from the owner as well, she's a nice lady. Highly recommended! read more

I tried this place a couple of years ago it was below average for me they got the name on the reservation wrong it looked like everyone in the restaurnat was high there was a weird array of odour that I didn't like. I ordered some lamb curry they gave to much bread and it took them 26 to 30 minutes to make coffee which was ridiculously expensive I probably won't come here again read more

Best vegetarian platter in the east end. So fresh and flavourful. Comes with more selections than I have had at other restaurants. Not sure if the injera is the best though. I prefer a bit more sourness. Service is friendly. Favourite Ethiopian restaurant so far. I still have to master the art of eating with injera :) Definitely get the coffee ceremony if you can but be prepared to get wired if it is just two of you. read more

Huge portions for one with ample toppings and the injera in particular is so much larger in diameter and THICKER than what you can get downtown! I came here alone tonight to have a rendez-vous with food, my lifelong one true love. I love Ethiopian food, have tried a few different places in Toronto (all downtown so far) and in Philadelphia. Tonight I ordered the veggie (it's vegan!) combination platter for one ($13.99), which comes with 2 huge ass injeras and a dozen of toppings. To be honest, there's nothing more special about the toppings in terms of variety or taste here versus at other Ethiopian places I've tried so far. My favorite toppings were the collard greens (some may think it's bland, but I thought it was refreshing and less heavy so a nice change from the other chickpeas, potatoes, and beans-based toppings), something mildly spicy (maybe lentils or small beans?), and roasted beets! Very filling since you're eating plenty of carbs/starches (potatoes), fiber, and protein! Yes, Ethiopian food is so great for that protein and minerals + vitamins boost that vegetarians/vegans often need! Injera itself is made from teff, a whole grain that's loaded with nutritious vitamins, minerals like zinc, and protein. I ate everything by myself. Literally everything - both injeras in fact - and all the toppings. Anyways, I was sooo stuffed, center of mass definitely altered making the walk back home very interesting. I'm not sure if they give free refills since I never asked, but I doubt you'll need any since the portions are so generous. Relatively fast service. Not a lot of staff and the ladies are always on their feet, working fast. They do have outdoor seating, but the inside seating, particularly deeper inside, are so cool and cultural. They do take credit card. And free WiFi from the nearby Starbucks :P read more
