I'm bummed to say that despite coming here after my own wedding for simple alterations to bridesmaid dresses, I would no longer recommend ette due to the cost alone. A $99 Azazie dress was quoted as needing alterations for roughly $400-450, which including hemming 2-3 layers and taking in the waist and bust. Ultimately, I negotiated down to $300, but I still left feeling defeated knowing I could've gotten the same quality of work down the road for a third of the price. read more

My dress turned out beautiful, but the process to get there was unnecessarily stressful, expensive, and disappointing. This place was recommended by the bridal shop where I bought my dress. I loved that shop, so I just trusted their recommendation without doing any research - big mistake. THE GOOD: The dress was perfect in the end. After several rounds of fittings and some last-minute changes (literally made on the spot at pickup), the dress did come out exactly how I wanted. I'm really happy with how it fit in the end. The shop responded quickly when I had a meltdown. After one especially rough appointment, I called in a panic. They got me in within a few hours and the manager stepped in to help, which I appreciated. THE NOT-SO-GOOD: The pricing is outrageous. I paid over $1,300 for basic alterations (some taking in/out and a hem). For reference, my friend had her whole dress redesigned at a different place for $800. I wish I'd known before everything was pinned. $50 guest fee?? Yes, you read that right. You have to pay extra to bring someone with you to your fittings (on top of already paying a premium for alterations). It's incredibly frustrating to be alone during such an important part of the wedding process, especially when... The tailor barely spoke to me. My alterations person was quiet, not collaborative, and honestly made me feel like an inconvenience when I asked questions. There was no excitement, no reassurance - just a lot of vague answers and some light gaslighting when I said things didn't fit right. Terrible lighting. It was hard to even tell how the dress was looking because the fitting room lighting was so poor. For a process that's all about visuals, this is a big issue. Manager follow-through was disappointing. Even after stepping in once, she never checked in on me again, even when she clearly saw me at later appointments. That felt cold. The vibe just wasn't it. Fittings should be fun, or at least feel special. Instead, I had anxiety before every visit because I felt like I was the only one seeing the vision for the dress. I constantly had to advocate for things that should have been obvious. Tip screen shock. At your final appointment, a tip screen pops up which defaults to 25%. On top of a $1,300+ bill, this just felt wildly tone-deaf. read more

My daughter worked with Ette to make very straight forward simple changes to make my wedding dress hers. We consulted with dress makers at boutiques to try to find a good fit for the fabric and were sent to Ette (2nd choice but seemed easier). Wrong choice! The turn over of staff was appalling- never the same seamstress twice. They changed things without asking. My daughter left in tears twice. They do not allow a friend or parent to be there without charge. I flew in across country because it was going poorly- all new people again. Zero communication from appointment to appointment. The custom purse they made out of a bow from the dress broke on the wedding day...not even used once! That was about $400. The bustle was not done properly so we ended up using a pin after carfeully videoing exactly where they intended to put loops so it could be done well...they neglected to add the proper loops- awful. The owner was attentive after very much trouble when I finally called and sent many emails (somewhere around fitting 6 or 7). She was empathetic and even told me we would be compensated for the mistakes but we were not. The price at Ette is high and the quality is low. I know running a small business is tough but the bridal industry is about helping the bride feel her best- brides go in looking for expertise...there was none! Poor pinning, poor communication, poor detail work. Thank goodness the adjustments asked for were small (still took 7 or 9 appointments) and the bride was stunning on her day. This is just fair warning. Keep the owner involved from day 1 if you choose to go to Ette and even then what you are told/sold may not be what you get. read more

I brought my mom's custom wedding dress to Ette for a "vintage revamp" so I could wear it on my wedding day in Ireland. I live in downtown Chicago and do not have a car, so Ette was one of the only nearby options. In hindsight, it would have been much better and more cost effective to go somewhere further away. There weren't many cosmetic changes needed, but Ette still made the process frustrating & time consuming. Ette charges extremely high prices, for bad service. There is no communication in between appointments and no way to know what changes were made to your dress. At one appt. I noticed the way they pinned the dress was not how I asked. The tailor did not offer any solutions, just looked at me and said "you're right, that looks bad now". Almost every alteration had to be redone bc they either forgot what I asked for, or messed it up. Ette does not hire professional tailors. It's an amateur business with high turnover, low skill, and poor business practices. At my last appointment I had 4 tailors working on my dress that I HAD NEVER SEEN BEFORE AT ANY OF MY 6 PRIOR APPOINTMENTS, none of them introduced themselves to me, and the appointment took 5+ hours to correct all their errors. This was my 7th fitting and they were still making alterations I requested during my 1st appointment. Other Experiences at Ette: - At my 2nd to last appt, I noticed they altered part of my dress without my permission. I left the appointment early and in tears. The owner of Ette who was helping me said "I don't know how this happened". - Ette "highly discourages" guests to come to fittings, and threatened to charge me $50 per guest when I asked to bring my mom (who flew in from Seattle) for support, note taking, and photos. I wish I was joking. My aunt brought champagne to celebrate, and they refused to let her open it. - We had to add 3 dress fittings to my schedule, including a re-do of the 1st appt because so many details were missed (7 total appts). - My dress was so wrinkled the 2nd appt. it had to be rescheduled. It looked like it had been bunched up in a corner on the floor. The new tailor I was assigned clearly never looked at my dress or any notes about it beforehand. Complete waste of my time. The tailor was incompetent, inexperienced, and clearly overwhelmed. - I had to ask for my dress to be cleaned and steamed, and they agreed for an additional charge (around $200+). Cleaning was not offered as an option to me at the start. - No photos were ever shared with me except for the ones my friends took, who technically weren't allowed to be at the appointment per Ette's company policy. - Biggest complaint is the customer service. During appointments, and over email, I was being talked down to by the tailors and gaslit any time I had a question or pointed out something I wanted changed (many changes I requested were due to their errors). Once I voiced my complaints in person and via email, the owner was apologetic and took my concerns seriously. Unfortunately, that does not fix the terrible alterations or un-waste my time. I dreaded each appointment at Ette and felt like I was being judged every time I asked for something changed on my dress that they didn't originally have planned. I was scared to bring a friend to my fittings because they say you can't. I had 9 different tailors help with my dress over 7 fittings, & there was zero consistency. The changes could have been made in 1-2 appointments if I went to a professional. On my wedding day, the $400 custom purse Ette made for me broke, and a bustle loop was missing from my dress, forcing us to use a safety pin. These errors reflected the lack of professionalism I experienced throughout. This review will not come as a surprise to Ette given the many apologies I received throughout the process for their blatant incompetence and lack of professionalism. It would be embarrassing for Ette to respond to this review with anything other than further regret. I will never get this experience back, but I hope this review can save other brides. read more

A complete failure - stay away! This place is overpriced for VERY low quality work. On my final fitting I discovered that they took in way too much of my dress and it was too tight. When I flagged my concerns, they told me "wedding dresses aren't meant to be comfortable." And sadly one of my biggest requests with the dress wasn't addressed at all, despite them working on the dress for 3 months. This all happened 2 weeks before my wedding - so I ended up taking my dress elsewhere. I couldn't trust a place that royally messed up my dress over 3 months. I had my grandmother's/mother's vintage Priscilla of Boston wedding gown revamped by Kpoene' and her team. The entire experience was truly spectacular, and the end result is a work of art. The 60 year old dress needed quite a bit of love-- stains, fit issues, and a very stuffy lining. Ette made me feel like anything was possible. I had such a seamless, straight-forward experience working with Ette for my wedding dress alterations! Goli, my fitter, was super professional and easy to work with. I wasn't sure what to expect when it came to gown alterations, and both Goli and Autumn were there to answer all of my questions. Email communication was always a breeze. Ette made it happen and my friends all raved about my dress! That said... I did need to speak up when we noticed asymmetry in the back and a tacking issue between layers. One thing i would say is i was caught off guard a bit when the machine i used to pay asked me to tip. I honestly feel like words can't describe how wonderful I felt in my dress, the look on my face all night shows even more than I could express! I fell in love with my dress when I tried it on at BHLDN, and fell even more in love with it after it was tailored to fit me perfectly. Not impressed. The top of my dress was a bit too revealing, and the Ette team agreed they could line it. Got the dress today, and the lining doesn't match the rest of the dress at all!!! I was told the color was closest they could get. Ette should have called me before proceeding if they couldn't find a match, so we could consider other options. And I had specifically asked about matching the color because they had showed me the color they ultimately used at my prior appointment, but had assured me they would order something closer in color because it wasn't right! Ette will charge me another $500 to remove the terrible lining! Ugh! It is four weeks until my wedding, and I have no idea what I'm going to wear because this looks awful. I showed my bridesmaids, and everyone thinks I should take this to another tailor to fix. Also, I was obviously very unhappy with my dress and no one really cared. I had the amazing opportunity to work with Ariana. She was so wonderful to work with. The moment I can for my first alteration, she welcomed me with a warm smile and a cheery presence. She was very professional and talented. I had some issues with my flutter sleeves of my dress and she creatively found a way for me to lift my arms for our first dance without the sleeves strapping me down. I had a mostly good experience with Ette tailor. The staff was very friendly and they made accommodations for my busy schedule. I had a few alterations done to my wedding dress since it was too big. Overall, I loved the length of my dress and the increased mermaid silhouette, however, my waist and torso didn't work out quite as planned. When I booked my first fitting in the spring, they said July should be enough time for my September wedding. Sadly, it wasn't. My dress was too tight at my waist at the second fitting and had to be let out - easy fix they said. However, since I had ribbon at the waist and they cut it and did not save the leftovers, it did not fully fit around my waist anymore upon pickup. Also, I had gapping at the top of the back of my dress and a tiny spot on my hip seam hadn't been fully sewn shut (I didn't notice until a day before my wedding and they fixed this after my wedding in just a few mins). My waist and hips fit perfectly at pickup. My bustle was also perfect. I think with an additional fitting and some more suggestions it would've been a better experience. I would still recommend them and return to them for alterations, just make sure you ask for about 3-4 months before your wedding for alterations! (my dress versus model pic). read more

SAVE YOUR MONEY! This place is a total rip off. Terrible service, very restrictive contract, they will over charge and under deliver! I went here based on recommendations from my bridal shop and seeing good reviews on yelp + google. When I received my wedding dress, I went in for a consultation to get a quote for the alterations. They assured me the alterations I needed were very standard, nothing out of the ordinary. I was very concerned about the fit of the bodice, and they recommended I use boob tape.. rather than actually fitting the bodice to me.. I thought that was odd, but I've never had a wedding dress tailored before. I also mentioned I wanted the dress to hug my hips, and they said they might not be able to do that or I wouldn't be able to sit.. So with minimal alterations to the bust, and also not guaranteeing the dress would fit in the hips like I wanted, they told me it would cost $650! Then when I went in for my first fitting, I said again that I wanted the dress to follow my hips, and they said that would cost extra, and increased the quote to $850!! I was getting skittish feeling like this is really expensive for alterations for a dress that only cost $2000 originally.. Then they sent me their contract. I read through it and it had all kinds of crazy stipulations like they are not responsible for altering your dress if you gain or lose significant weight.. without defining what is "significant weight." 5 lbs? 10 lbs? Who knows. They also reserved the right to charge by the hour for answering emails!! They have no promise of customer satisfaction and only outlined all the ways they could charge you EVEN MORE. Absolutely insane. I took my dress and left and found another tailor, who is charging me HALF what they quoted me. AND she is fitting the bodice to me (no boob tape needed!) and making my booty look amazing (and I'll still be able to sit down of course!). Shout out to Mary Catomy, my new tailor. I came to Ette at the recommendation of my planner and I am so thrilled I did. My fittings began pre-covid. At my first fitting, the team went through all of the details of my alterations as well as a very thorough breakout of cost and level of work. This was so important so I knew what was going to happen with such an important piece. We decided that due to some customizations, that I'd need 4 fittings. When I came back for my second fitting, the dress fit nearly perfectly already. The biggest adjustment was the arm hole as I had to reduce the amount of fabric in the shoulder straps for my shorter statue. By the final 2 fittings we were well into Covid but there was nearly nothing we needed to edit, just super minor seams only the seamstress could see. The Ette team is taking their precautions so seriously and I felt so safe in their space. I completely trusted them with my dress and the alterations. ette tailor was fantastic to work with for my BHLDN 2-piece gown. i had a few customizations i needed done - adding pockets to the skirt, hemming it/cutting off the train, making the top hit higher, and figuring out what was best to wear underneath a sheer lace top. kpoene fit me in quickly after a later fitting when i felt i needed adjustments after looking at photos of the earlier fitting. you can tell she's a fantastic designer and knows what she's talking about with all of her suggestions! ariana was so helpful and calming for every step of our appointments, even doing a last minute alteration at our final appointment so we could take it with us so close to the wedding. she had the original suggestion to add a memorable touch to my dress, saying they often add elements to reflect family pasts/etc. - i was able to add a piece of fabric from one of my late dad's old shirts that we had embroidered to go in one of my pockets. it was one of my favorite features of my dress. i also wasn't so sure about a veil in general, but as we got close to the wedding, they made me a simple, beautiful thin mid-length one that i decided to use for my ceremony (in addition to my flower crown). 'ette' is a super cute shop - loved the old fireplace in it and the fun, pretty decor! they go out of their way to make your dress truly yours for the big day. :) read more

If you have the budget, they are the best in the business!! My dress fits like a glove and they are so thorough in their alterations. Great customer service from everyone I interacted with.
