In February, they have Hellebore Days on weekends (also open by appointment), where you can peruse over 40 varieties of Hellebores. Ahhh! I am always itching to get out in the garden (no pun intended!) this time of year, but it is so early and many nurseries aren't even open yet. Here, though, they are celebrating many of the most special winter blooming beauties. They are located fairly far from my home, so I called before heading out and the owner picked up right away and happily answered my questions about prices and what she currently had in stock. And she was just as lovely in person! I was interested in a particular variety of hellebore which she found for me, then directed me to some others that had a similar look. Then I just had a wander around and pretty quickly fell in love with several other plants. They have a beautiful display garden along with a sweet corgie, friendly tortie kitty, and even the teeniest most adorable little serama chickens. I could have spent hours there! I ended up with a couple hellebores, a unique and new-to-me variety of Sweet Box, a beautiful and incredibly fragrant witch hazel (in addition to the hellebores, they had the largest variety of witch hazels I have ever seen) and a nice size Chinese Paperbush that I just could not walk away from (if you know anything about them she is Akebono and she is gorgeous!). I left behind a purple daphne that I'm still kicking myself about. They have a wide variety of plants, but they do seem to have special love for the more shade tolerant and/or fragrant varieties. Prices on all were good to excellent. I believe they had three designated parking spots, but there was another grassy section that appeared to be used for overflow parking, and I wouldn't expect them to get super busy anyways (although by the time I left there were several other customers there). This was such a great little nursery and an absolute pleasure to shop, I will absolutely be back.

I had a very disappointing experience with Trevor at All About Lands. I ordered what I was told…read morewould be 12 yards of material for a $360 delivery. After it was delivered, I had multiple people with landscaping/excavation experience look at it, and we determined it was nowhere close to 12 yards -- approximately 7 yards. I immediately brought this up with the driver, and instead of resolving the issue, the situation became even more frustrating. I then went directly to Trevor's yard and asked him to load 12 yards so I could compare it myself. He started loading my trailer, and I stopped him at around 10 yards because the trailer was already overflowing. I took that material home and dumped it directly next to the original delivery. The difference was obvious. The material I received as approximately 10 yards was noticeably more than the material that had been delivered as "12 yards." When I brought this up with Trevor, instead of trying to work out a reasonable solution, he became angry, started cussing at us, and insisted that I pay for the full 12 yards. I refused to pay for material I did not receive. For comparison, I later went to McFarlane's Bark nearby and purchased 10 yards for $170. Their load was actually 10 yards, the trailer was heavily loaded, and the people there were professional and easy to deal with. I've had a much better experience with them. After dealing with All About Lands for the past several days, I personally would not recommend them based on my experience. If you're paying for a specific amount of material, I strongly recommend measuring the load yourself before accepting it and comparing what you actually receive with what you were charged for. $360 for what I believe was approximately 7 yards is not acceptable to me. Every shovel full. Like it was 3/4 minus. Weird. Not what I wanted as I was using it for landscaping not a driveway. I called and they assured me I got what I asked for. Not that I expected them to say they messed up. I had them deliver me some 3/4 Ballston just a couple weeks ago. What I received todsy was not the same at all. Probably wont be using them again.

The cashier is at the front of the property in a greenhouse type structure that is incredibly humid. Staff were helpful and polite. They had live ladybugs!

So I made my way to Tony's to stock up and get started. The staff is friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. Prices vary from reasonable to very expensive but that's to be expected with such a grand variety. This last season I lost a couple of small grasses and a couple of lupine to the hot summer heat but everything else looks great. The large hanging baskets that I put into the large pots on my deck were my favorites. I'll be back in the spring for more things to beautify my yard.

When it's berry picking season, I head to Morning Shade Farm! They have so many varieties -…read moreblackberries, boysenberries, Marion berries, elderberries, raspberries. The blackberries and Marionberries, my fave. They are big, plump, and bursting with flavor. Plus, they are so much easier to pick at a farm where the bushes are staked to a trellis vs. the wild ones I pick on the side of the road. Don't get me wrong, I do pick the wild ones, but I'm usually covered in juice and my hands and arms get all pricked. When I'm here, I pick a huge bucketful so I can make pies. The berries are so sweet I just add a little sugar and lemon juice and the pies are perfect. Also pick enough so I can enjoy some plain, by the handfuls. Their blueberries are sweet and delicious, too! I make space in my freezer so I can have them throughout the year. If you don't want to pick your own, no worries, they sell containers and flats in their cute country store along with other food and gift items. This family farm is so picturesque! It's a lovely setting and it's well run with friendly staff. If you are picking fruit, definitely go in the morning to avoid the sun beating down on your back. And wear a hat!
