First of all one star is a star too much...my dad found EVCO thru Google. He wanted to reapolster an antique chair that was my mother's. Straight forward back and seat only. Ben came to the house, explained services and priced job at $1200 saying he might have to retire springs and foam back. After approx 2mo. Receiving a call, he wants $700 to re tie springs, which we agree. 2 weeks later says he needs $400 to do the foam. Daf says fine do it and bring it back. A MONTH LATER.....he wants dad to scotch guard for $200 and when we declined, was not happy with that decision. When he finally dropped the chair off, my dad confronted him about the poor service and Ben tried to pull the "you're talking down to me" card,, which he is around the same age as my dad!!! As you can see the company had my furniture for almost a year. There was no telephone contact to advise that the original estimate had been reached and that it would cost an additional 1,600.00 to complete the job. The only person I spoke with was the receptionist who advised she would reach out to let me know the progress and the possible completion date which never happened. The individual called me once in June to ask if I wanted them to fabricate a leaf that was too warped for an additional 500.00 I said no. Their response sounded angry in disbelief and I was asked if they should just throw it away. I advised that if the leaf was too warped to repair - please throw it away. It is interesting that they did deliver the supposed irreparable leaf which to my eyes didn't look at all warped. I had three couch pillows I wanted reupholstered, but I decided to cancel the order the next day. He convinced me to go ahead, but when they were delivered they were the wrong color and as firm as bricks! My lovely couch is now ruined. I met with Ben today, he was 20 minutes late to appointment because he needed to make sure someone was present, so called me a few times. This was totally unnecessary as I spoke to a lady at EVCO just two days ago, and I asked her to email me an appointment confirmation. Instead, I got an email advertisement list of all the reasons why to reupholster rather than to buy a replacement piece of furniture. When I spoke to Ben on phone because of delayed timing, he was a little off putting asking me to describe piece of furniture, which was a worn faux leathertop ottoman table. He asked what I wanted to replace it with, leather or something else. I said I'm not sure if I wanted to go with leather, which he still proceeded to give me a ball park estimate of $250/yd. anyways. He said I have thousands of samples, so he wanted me to narrow it down. I said I'd still like to meet and see samples. Ben got to my house another 20 mins. later, but before that on the phone, was asking me for specific directions how to get here. I was flustered because I'm new to Sac so didn't know which direction, North or South, from where he was coming from, which seemed less than 2 miles away. I thought it was odd of him asking me for directions, like he's never Googled directions or use GPS?? Anyway, to make a long story short, he says for adding leather and 4 hours of labor at $85/hr (which was a senior discount rate), it would cost upwards of $700-800 to reupholster, and his calendar is backed up by 3 months. He also never let my husband and I look at his "proposed thousands of samples" in his dented van with absolutely no logo writing of EVCO on it, so a little 'shady' for a so-called business, because he wanted us to make a decision right there and then, before he even pulled out samples! He was condescending too about his labor rate of $85/hr and repeatedly mention this was "discounted", but that he normally charges $110/hr. Then he says, "you can't even find a mechanic around here for $85/hr. labor." Anyways, for $700, I'd rather go with a company I feel good about that has good representation and EVCO wasn't it. I don't know why I didn't read all the Yelp reviews before I had my dining chairs reupholstered. What a scam! Ben came to my home in October to look at my six dining chairs. The dining set is forty-five years old and in excellent condition. I just wanted the chair seats re-done. I chose a fabric from the extensive collection of fabrics that Ben showed me. Each chair required one yard of fabric at $90 a yard (high price, but Ben said the fabric was quality and durable). The initial quote was $230 per chair. I figured the cost would increase when foam cushioning was added, although it was strange that Ben had no idea what that cost would be! He said it would be 8-10 weeks before they could pick up the chairs and then about one week to complete the work. That was fine with me. I gave him a $300 deposit and felt good about my decision. The chairs were picked up on January 8th. At that time, Ben told me it would take 4-6 weeks to complete the project. When I reminded him that he said it would take only a week, he told me I was mistaken, and he never would have said that. Then, the costs began to pile up...One call to say all the chairs needed to be re-glued $450...another for foam cushions...$450...and lining fabric to cover the foam...$100...And, the final call...$100 to spray fabric protector on the chairs (discounted from $150 for seniors? Um, no) The chairs were delivered back to me on the 22nd. I am satisfied with the overall work; however, the final cost per chair was $430. Ridiculous! read more

Do yourself a favor, don't use this company. Just don't! They get one star because honestly, the work done on our antique couch was beautiful. But, and this is huge, the estimate was $2,795. Actual price was $4,843! Yes, we knew the estimate would increase due to webbing, cushioning, etc. but NEVER did the owner mention how much it could increase! Very deceptive business practices. Lure you in with a good estimate, and then charge you outrageous amounts at the end. By the way, the $1,000 for new webbing wasn't really needed. I saw the old webbing, it was fine. If we had known an accurate estimate was close to $5,000, we wouldn't have had the work done. This company, and the way it does business, is the worst! Never! Again! And now I need 6 dining chairs recovered and this is the last company I would call. We had a 30 years old sofa with great bones, in great.shape except that the cushions we broke down. Ben came out and gave us an estimate of $1000. That was $250 per cushion. I thought it was a bit high, but the couch is a solid name brand and worth the investment. We originally had him quote an entire recover job. $6000 he said with a straight face. When Ben came to get the cushions, he brought 2 samples of the foam we could use. One a bit firmer than the other. We chose the firmer one. When he returned the cushions a month later, they looked great but were hard as a rock and terribly uncomfortable. I told him this and he just said, it's the foam you picked. The foam he had brought had been sat on about a million times so of course it was softer. When I paid the bill, it had gone up $200 because, apparently, there was an additional $50 charge to actually put the foam into the covers. What? Weeks later I called Ben to tell him the couch was wildly uncomfortable. He never returned my call. The first couple of time someone sat down on the couch, one of the zippers separated because the fabric was so tight over the foam. So there I am, out $1200 and I'm fixing my couch with a needle and fishing line. I have 6 dining chairs that need recovering and you can bet I will not be calling Ben at Ecco. read more

Unless you have priceless antiques and an unlimited budget, don't even consider Evco Upholstery. The owner, Ben Cator, seems to be a very nice older gentleman but he will give you a price that he can sell, on a sales order that you can't read and then upcharge you at the end. My quote for two, well built but ordinary, chairs and an ottoman was roughly $5500, which I thought was high anyway, but I was looking forward to them being done correctly. The fabric came in late for the deadline that I had because I was moving and I offered to purchase the fabric. I was told that I couldn't do that for some BS reason. He promised he could get it done for my move, so I proceeded. Little did I know that in those two weeks the price would end up over $10,000, with upcharges that they could not send me to review, but listed out over the phone so fast that I could not write them down and they would not provide me with a total. You see, they do not use a computer and do not email as the "laptop is kept in a file drawer". That call was for one chair. I got another call with more upcharges listed, again so fast that I could not get them written down as I took the call in my car. Again with no total. When I asked for a total of the charges, as I was getting more concerned, or sick to my stomach, I was told by his office person that she would have to check with Ben before she could give me a total but that I would get a revised invoice and contract upon delivery. Needless to say, I had a few words for Ben. You will never see a typed invoice that is readable, a typed list of upcharges, nor will you have any time to review them. He has been in business for 46 years, per him, and he knows very well what he is doing. Although I was able to settle with him for somewhat less than the $10K, he still probably laughed all the way to the bank. The chairs look good but the cushions are hard as a rock and it will take some time and use for them to really be comfortable, but they will "last me forever". I feel that I was taken advantage of due to my rushed timeline. He is completely unethical in his methods of doing business. Thank goodness for the people of the Sacramento area that he only plans to be in business for one more year. read more

Nice enough young lady who answers phone however she doesn't have access to the purchase orders and it takes her two days to answer any question - no matter how complicated or uncomplicated the question. And the owner spent about 2 hours with us and helping is select a fabric in which we selected a tapestry. The sofa needed to be reupholstered and refinished in the springs were coming out underneath the sofa. Stupid me, I didn't ask for a written estimate so what he verbally quoted me was going to be $500 came back at $750!. He also verbally said that they would need to replace the chair cushion. Stupid me didn't check for that on the work order, but 5 weeks out he informs me I have to pay another $50 for the cushion otherwise the chair wouldn't be right. Why would he have taken the chair without wanting to bring it back right in the first place? The whole experience was like dealing with a crook. They didn't answer their phones and didn't call me back when they said they would. Their email address is worthless too. $20,000, that's right, twenty thousand dollars is the amount Ben tried to trick me into paying to recover 4 small chairs & a tiny loveseat, 3x the original estimate. He tried to justify the extra cost by insisting the pieces needed repair described as spring tightening & new padding. I would never authorize any extra costs primarily because his yellow page adds clearly state "all necessary repairs & padding come with one sensible price". Equally shocking was seeing my furniture recovered in a grossly cheaper fabric than what I spent hours selecting. I chose a thick brown grainy leather for a small office chair. He covered it in a thin orangey plastic looking material. I chose a thick salmon velvet for the tiny loveseat to match the walls. He covered it in a thin cheap velvet in Pink. Ben performed cartwheels, handsprings & jumping jacks to get me to pay. I refused. The next morning his attorney called me. Then he mailed documents threatening to ruin my credit & sue me. My attorney sent them a letter inviting them both to my new upholstery shop to witness the stripping of his cheap fabric to replace it with quality fabric & also expose the non existent repairs. My attorney & I never heard from Ben or his attorney again. read more

I will never use this company again, and you might consider the same. I had the work done about 4 years ago, but just ran across the receipt a few days ago and started getting worked up all over again. Here's our story .... because my husband and I couldn't agree on a new family room chair and ottoman we decided to re-upholster an existing one. We needed new foam and springs, the whole works. We knew it would be expensive ($4,000+!) but decided to go ahead because we loved the chair and would get two matching pillows for the couch. The owner seemed solid and nice. Although the work was delayed and took a long time, we were still hopeful. Hopeful, even though we got a couple calls while he had our chair and the price was raised. But then we received the finished product. Imagine our surprise when we received the ottoman and it had been changed in appearance! Evco added brackets all around the middle section without asking us, saying he thought it would look better and asking if I was pleased. I was not pleased, I was furious because I prefer a clean look. Then within a year all the new heavy duty foam broke down (the seat now dips over three inches in the middle), the wood chair legs broke off, and the fabric frayed. It hardly looked any better than when we took it in. Very disappointed. Worse decision we made in our 20+ year marriage. They overvalue the time spent by owner beyond a minimum largely useless initial cost estimate; he will visit for free and provide a useless estimate and try to gouge for his time if he spends any more time to bring in fabric samples that could be available if EVCO had a visitable location. Do not, I repeat, DO NOT use this shop!! They quote you one price, then when they get the furniture to their shop, they start quoting other exorbitant price increases in order for you spend exponentially more than the original contract. Ours was $1,995, plus $595 for the matching ottoman. Price finished $3,616.00!! (i.e., $500 for Stuffing, $200 questionably necessary Wood refinishing, plus unsubstantiated high hourly labor costs.) They site their expertise in "restoring" antique furniture, demanding you rely on their unproven expertise. The fabric choices were limited. When they started "nickel and diming" us for supposed necessary additions, they had already done the work without approval that we were stuck with. They were condescending in pointing to the "Contract" when we questioned the necessity and very high costs for the additions. "They are professionals -- The only ones who do this kind of work." Well, they may be the only ones doing this kind of work, but I would say that swindling would be the better description of their expertise. Then, when the furniture was returned, the workmanship was inferior to the original! Now it looks like a cheap knock-off. For the price I paid for this chair, I was expecting workmanship at least as good as what they were given originally! WHAT A TRUE RIP OFF! I would only recommend that you use this shop if you had a project maximum written into the contract, and only if you are not concerned with practically burning your money! On second thought . . . Ben , the Owner came into my home, knowing I needed a firm couch for I am going in for Ovarian Surgery in four days, promised new firm cushions, etc. and now - no cushions, no pillows, and he will not deliver my stolen property he took from my home unless I pay with a Cashier Check! Our phone quote started at $980, then when he was an hour late to our Appointment, he quoted $1270 - my Husband and I were shocked and wanted a signed itemized invoice with the breakdown of $1270 - we have it - and when he has "Alaida" his Assistant call us she said it was $1515...what? That is a huge difference. Ben, the Owner, was yelling at me and my Husband threatened us, and said he will not deliver our cushons and pillows now unless we give him a Cashier Check for the $1315 - he already has a $200 Deposit - and he said he doesn't like my Husband and his tone so he will NOT deliver our cushions and pillows from our couch that he took on Monday, May 16th - this is unbelievable. He flaked on my delivery today, cussed and yelled at me, and is now holding our Couch items ransom and I am out a Couch from this man! read more

I needed my moms two 75 year old antique chairs reupholstered so I went to EVCO and they did an amazing job. I had picked an antique velvet fabric that I had them work on. They also were able to refinish the wood that was on the chairs. The pricing was also good for the two antique chairs to be reupholstered and to have the wood be refinshed it only cost about $3675. When I called Evco A girl named Lexie helped me. She was a very pleasant and was quite knowledgeable about upholstering. She set an appointment for the Evco rep to come and show me samples of fabrics I could choose from for my sofa. There was so much to choose from that were beautiful. After I chose the fabric I liked Ben The rep sat with me and went thru the entire process with me and clearly told me the cost for each step. Which was nice so I had no surprises when I received delivery of the sofa. I was amazed and pleased at the quality of the workmanship that had been done. I couldn't believe how beautiful my sofa was. Ben then presented the bill showing me the cost for everything done. It was the same price he originally quoted me. Which was nice because I hate surprises when payment time comes. In September 2013 I called Evco Upholstery to recover a recliner chair. I chose expensive fabric, gave a $300.00 deposit using a card, signed a contract leaving the balance $1595.00. Chair was collected in early October. Phone calls stating costs for additional work occurred. No verbal authorization was given for additional work, and no additional contract was sent with added charges requiring my signature. The chair was ready for delivery late October 2013 with the total now required $3140.00, a difference of $1545.00, nearly doubled what I was originally quoted. I refused to pay. Numerous conversations, explanations, and attempted mediation by channel 13 was pointless. In November the owner said he was going to start charging $25.00 a day storage fee if I did not pay. I was interviewed by Consumer Affairs who had had previous dealings with Evco Upholstery; and at that time I found out the contract I had signed was illegal. Late December I called Evco and offered $1595.00. Early January 2014 I received a summons to small claims court . Early March I appeared in court, Evco refused to work with the mediator assigned there, and after hearing the case the judge required me to pay $1000.00 for the recovering of the chair, and the chair was to be delivered IMMEDIATELY. Three days later I paid the $1000.00 to the court and called and requested my chair be delivered. Evco refused to deliver the chair until April 11th. As of April 21st, 2014, Evco has had his money for nearly 3 weeks. I still do not have my chair. I have found the owner arrogant, uncooperative, untrustworthy, undependable, belligerent and antagonistic. His secretary is redundant, extremely bothersome argumentative, and extremely irritating. My experience with Evco and my dealings with Consumer Affairs regarding this matter leave me no alternative but to recommend that no one ever do business with Evco Upholstery. The exorbitant price, the long term irritation, delays, excuses, and court expenses leave me no alternitave but to express my ABSOLUTE displeasure with the owner of this business.
