The concept of reviving old items has been applied to the reupholstery of our couch, which started 5 years earlier with Ed, the owner and craftsman of Customer Upholstery on Auburn Boulevard. Our sofa had a classic frame with oversized seat cushions and feathered back cushions approximately 20 years old, and the fabric was showing signs of wear and tears in two distinct areas along with the frames fabric. Ed suggested semi-firm foam replacements which was perfect,and thought that the fabric would be fine for now, but consider a fabric change next time I decide needed new foam cushions. So 5 years later I decided this October to replace them again, Ed suggested that future cushion replacement may not be feasible due to the fabrics extensive wear. He suggested that I consider reupholstering as we were unable to find a suitable replacement in the market. Our needs required a comfortable couch that could accommodate two dogs and two humans. The market was lacking style and craftsmanship. So I made an appointment with his lovely wife Lily, who manages the showroom. Lily suggested we browse through the MULTIPLE design books, guiding this upholstery fabric novice on what would and would not be great for a sofa especially if we catered to spoiling our 4 legged friends. We spent several hours carefully deciding on a texture and a color until we found the perfect one. To ensure that the project was completed before the holidays, Ed's plan was to do this project in 2 phases so we'd have something to sit on while the reupholstering of the sections was happening. The process was seamless, Ed and his team made sure that each sections transport was properly packed and protected since of course it was time for the rainy season to begin. The final result is a beautiful couch with fabric that will last for years. They went above and beyond to make this project a success even as the holidays approached they were confident that I'd have a new couch Christmas and they delivered! Best place to get your quality furniture reupholstered at a fair price! Lilly and Ed are easy to work with, have pride in workmanship, and deliver as promised! My husband was ready to start shopping for a new sectional but after talking with Lilly and Ed decided to have them replace the seat cushions on our recliners that are part of our large sectional. I went in on Monday and dropped off a sling for a nursery glider that needed to be repaired. Lilly told me her service guy was in the field and could I come back in the afternoon? I said I could not but perhaps tomorrow. I called on Tuesday and was told that Lilly was out by the service guy and he could not help me, I had to wait for Lilly. No calls from them on Wednesday. On Thursday I went in to pick up my sling. Once again Lilly was out of the office the service guy could not help me and he went to get the boss who was out back fixing his car. I have a pub table that I keep next to my pool table. The pool table, pub table & 2 stools came as part of a set that I bought for my man cave 10 years ago. After a decade, I noticed that the leather seat portion of my pub table stools were in pretty sad shape. I contacted a few Re-upholstery companies and was appalled at the outrageous prices they were quoting me to reupholster 2 stools. (One guy wanted to charge me $150 PER STOOL plus material.) I could easily go on marketplace or some other sites and BUY 2 STOOLS FOR $150. In any event, I contacted ED with Custom Upholstery & asked him what he would quote me to reupholster my stools. He gave me a fair & reasonable price. I dropped the stools off at his store on one afternoon & the stools were done the next morning. What a great craftsman. Ed & Custom Upholstery are phenomenal. Custom Upholstery did a horrible job. Ed smiled and said "yes" to everything I asked him to do...and then didn't do most of the things I asked for. He did not replace the cushions for the two chairs and couch back that I requested (because they were 16 years old and needed to be replaced). He did not replace the ottoman cushion. The couch cushions he did replace, after me explaining at length that I needed them to be soft and comfortable, are rock hard and tilt down toward the back of the couch (which they did not do before), so the seating and laying is completely uncomfortable. My pieces are very square and a lot of the seems are not straight. The fabric on the back of the couch came apart within 3 months. Also, I provided the fabric for the trim (the cording for the seams on the couch and one of the chairs). There should have a been a lot extra and I asked him to make some pillows, to which he agreed. No pillows were provided to me upon delivery. And after several requests via phone and email, he did not provide any pillows and did not return the fabric to me. He ignored all my further contacts. I worked with Ed for years on upholstery projects and I will never work with him again.. At first he was responsive and was on time with each project but slowely over time he became less and less responsive and would randomly leave town for weeks at a time leaving his very unprofessional employee to handle his shop. After a few bad experiences, I gave him one more chance and brought him a large couch which never ended up getting completed. I came in months later and saw the couch taken apart and was told it would be done shortly. I never heard from Ed again and now a year later he was confronted and either took my sofa or is acting although it never existed. He is not to be trusted. read more
