The Covid distancing, 3 at a time works great. But when it was my time to order: The WORST customer service in US history!(In my world )The workers-they had dead eyes-looking like they hate their miserable lives. They stare and react they truly don't give a muck. The cashier actually laughed in my face when I asked the texture of brisket-right to my face-looking at each other and co-signing the ignorance and giggling. Hell, I've never had it before-"Is the texture like rib meat? The all giggle, cashier says,"Naw"-that's it-Just creepy. I actually felt afraid somehow. The tall rude guy handing out food-EGADS! Impatient, rude, disrespectful, tired cashier-very "#TheHillsHaveEyes". Creepy a$$ work crew-zero class. So how do you think the food was with that energy popping off? Sloppy and creepy just like the customer service I ordered links/brisket(2Way Split) 2X(introducing my friend to what used to be great energy, and yummy bbq)=$64Bucks later- Gross syrupy over the top HOT links, the brisket tasted like a distressed leather belt. A total waste, and unfortunate experience. Top it off, there was a short hair in mine. We thought maybe they did that to spite-who knows-I just move to the positive. Sat the drippy over slopped containers in the back seat. We got yummy fresh fast food drive thru. Got home, rinsed boiled the the links and brisket-and gave them to my pups. That's really what it was-dog food! js I was throwing away the containers and my friend said you should complain! I said "To whom?"Not the creepy workers, management must be off chain, hinge! We laughed I thought #yelp-and so it is... So here's my honest opinion: If you go and you get or sense that disrespectful creepy energy-walk away. I hear that other locations are better. Being from Missouri, I had given up on BBQ in the Bay Area. It was overcooked, dried out, all boil/no smoke (bleh)... not to mention the lackluster sides. A friend told me about this place and promised it wouldn't disappoint. Nothing exceptional to note as far as the service, which just consisted of taking our order. By default, food served in to-go fashion, and we dined at outside tables. We got the 2-way Combo: 1) Ribs & Brisket 2) Green Beans 3) Mac 'n Cheese 4) Peach Cobbler If there were smaller gradations on the stars, I would have given 4.5/5 (90%) if this was Missouri, but I upgraded to 5/5 as far as other (limited/bad) options in this area. It wasn't perfect, but everything was really good. We were there on a Thursday about 2 P.M. It was only us and another couple. Everything seemed scratch-made and fresh. Cobbler was superb. Good potion size (this order fed 2 women with a bit leftover). Reasonably priced (total without tip about $39). They only have bottled water to drink. The outside seating was good/clean, but being an introvert, the people approaching you for a lengthy talk just to ask for money was off-putting. I spent about $25 for a 2 way dinnerof beef brisket, links, mac & cheese and potato salad. The quality of meat is fine, but the portion of meat given isn't great considering the price. Hmm... when I tell you, this one had me stumped for a while. I was at lost for words. Not only was i continuously told this place was fire , the best, and unmatched. Aside from the raving reviews. To me, that goes a long way. Bbq has a deep portion of my soul, and I saw (out back in their mini shed) they used wood for their ovens, so that gave me the security that I am coming for the real deal. I ordered something light due to me being hesitant. Brisket, green beans, Mac and cheese... simple right? wrong... The brisket was super dry and tasteless, and honestly tasted like it was sprinkled with liquid smoke. The green beans tasted as if it was out of a can (don't act like we all don't know how that tastes) and I was given baked beans, not Mac and cheese. I sat in my car upset because I'm like, I was hungry and was really hoping for the best. This is my experience. This is not to say I won't be back, but I don't know.... When I first called to phone in an order for pick up, I called passed 4pm (they're cut off time) but the lady was still willing to take down my order which I thought was dope! Anyway, I guess they sell different sides at different locations because she told me they don't sell yams here, not a big deal but worth noting. Luckily, they got their own parking lot because being located on University Ave. can be challenging. It's nothing fancy, they got a TV in there, some toy quarter machines, a little side table top and hella stickers covering the walls. The counter is covered in family photos which I thought was pretty unique and loveable. The staff was super friendly and quick. The menu is pretty straight forward - you got your combos with your choice of meat and sides. I ordered the 2 way combo with chicken & ribs with potato salad and baked beans for sides. Maaan, let me tell you! Them ribs was smackin, tender and the sauce was nice! The potato salad was hella flavorful too! The chicken wasn't my favorite maybe cause it was white meat. I was a little disappointed that they served the meal with regular bread and didn't have cornbread on the menu. That would've topped it off! Overall, glad I got to finally taste this place. I've lived in Berkeley my entire life and have been going to E&J for a long time. Honestly, it's been going downhill and the only things that remain consistently good are the sauce and potato salad. I honestly feel like BBQing myself and the just adding their sauce and potato salad. Plus the prices keep going up, but the portions remain the same. The links and ribs are the best items on the menu. The brisket is hit or miss. Sometimes I've got the burnt ends and it was great. Other times, all fat and a flabby cow breast ‍ Sadly, they almost have a BBQ monopoly w/ Flints being gone, KC's burnt down and Smoke not having good sauce. But what can you do? Unless you're ready to fire up the grill and spend 3-5 hours BBQing. You're best off coughing up $25+ for E&J, just don't hold high expectations! read more

This is a place that has a lot of history. There's some fun slogans on the wall and the counter top has pictures of famous athletes that have visited. There's limited seating inside so if you can't find a seat, there's plenty of seating outside. Street parking or shopping center next door. I did like that they cook in an old fashion wall smoker. I really enjoy spicy food so i chose "hot" (you have the option to select mild, medium, hot or on the side). I ordered BBQ ribs , brisket, sausage and chicken. It was all very tasty with good flavor. We called the Berkeley location to see if they had outside seating.....we were told NO outside seating at any of the locations....WE arrive at the Berkeley location and they have pinic benches outside for customers. I should have taken the 1st red flag and left before placing order, which was the customer service starts at the the door and they are truly lacking in that.....but we always try to support black owned businesses Less than 10mins after ordering our order was ready...another red flag We took our orders home....AND WE WERE TOTALLY SHOCKED, DISGUSTED, AND DISAPPOINTED IN THE FOOD. Considering I was the last customer of the night, and they were outta some things, I consider myself lucky. Flight delayed getting back to Oakland created a dilemma. It was damn near 10:00 pm not much open. I was unwilling to eat another meal at the airport. So I figured I'd get off I-80 at University and check out what's nearby. La Marcia is open late but I wanted something to go. At the corner of San Pablo and Univ., I spied Everette Jones signs saying open. So I pulled in right up front. Also takes Amex! Score. the crew was watching straight outta Compton on the tv screen adjacent to the seating area. They were enthralled having never seen the movie, which kinda shocked me. It was like a barbershop scene watching their reactions. The brother who waited on me apologized, they were out of a number of things and the only BBQ sause was spicy. I'm not gonna be picky so I got my trio of spicy hot links, chicken and brisket with baked beans and green beans 2-go. The brisket was my least favorite. The chicken was fall off the bone tender. The sausages sloshed over into the beans along with the spicy BBQ sauce, was the best beans n Franks combo I ever ate! As long as I was eating the heat of the sauce didn't bite. It wasn't til I sopped up the last bits with the bread slices that it woke up my nostrils and my tongue was hollering fi -ya, fi-ya! Ahhh but it was a good pain! The sauce was definitely packing heat, but complex flavors of savory and sweet were the pronounced notes. Unfortunately when I go back, and yep I will be... I have to have the spicy BBQ now. Anything else will seem weak. I've passed EJ BBQ a thousand times... being a BBQ snob from Chicago where they are allowed to smoke house cook their proteins. Here in health conscious Cali, the VOC's from a smoke house are illegal as it contributes to poor air quality. (Volatile organic compounds) The standard in Chi town is Lems bbq. EJ is the closest To replicating that smoked, all day, low and slow flavah. I see now why the times I've passed it's packed and busy. I went yesterday to Everett and Jones on San Pablo Ave in Berkeley 8/21/2022. I got there at 11:45 expecting to wait until 12:00 when they opened. The door was open and the OPEN sign was displayed. I looked in and there was a man cleaning windows and asked "oh did they open early?". The man cleaning the windows said "can't you read - what's wrong with you - are you blind". While I was sitting outside a black lady came to wait for them to open and he was all over her and they even exchanged phone numbers. I guess I was the wrong color for him since I am white. I'm sure the people that work there heard him because they overcharged me by quite a bit. I got a link plate, wish potato salad , and Mac and cheese at the West Berkeley location (first time). The plate was not appetizing at all the food was tasteless and cold. I've been to the other two locations ( both located in Oakland) and they were WAY better , hot food, had great flavor, and the meal size was well proportioned. Way too hard to eat. I know that good bbq should have some meat stuck onto the bone (it shouldn't fall off easily) but this was just not it.
