I lived at 2121 Belmont for close to six years…read more As of 2021, in terms of build quality and customer service, it's difficult to think of a better building in inner SE! - Originally built as condos, so great quality build, including hardwood floors, granite countertops, thick walls, etc. Weirdly, I could hear when my neighbors opened and closed their sunshades, but I could never hear dogs barking, loud music, etc. - Some ground-level apartments with private entrances available if you have a dog or bike that requires easy access to the street. - Parking spots available, package lockers, small gym, and a dog wash. In six years, I maybe lost two packages, which is remarkable! - Along the 15 bus route, so easy commute Downtown for work, with easy transfers to NE along MLK Blvd. If you bike: very easy to access anything in SE, Downtown, the Pearl, or inner NE. Wonderful location to pick up cycling for transportation! - Within easy biking distance of tons of coffee shops--very ideal outside of COVID times! - Across from Colonel Summers Park, next door to a cemetery (quiet neighbors!) that's nice for walks. - Generally pretty friendly neighbors. I lived in the building for close to six years, but one of my next-door neighbors had lived there even longer! - In six years, my rent went up about $75. There are a few caveats, however: - Most of the units do not have "true" bedrooms; if you look at the layout diagrams, the bedroom is in the middle of the apartment with no windows. I didn't realize how much that affected me until I moved out. The darkness really does get to you, even if you purchase a smart lamp. - Relatedly, the building is North/South facing, so in most of the units, you don't get great light--especially during winter. - There are lots of things "nearby", but very few things right outside your door: a couple restaurants, one bar, a dispensary, an LGBTQ clinic. I wouldn't call the area walkable so much as bikeable. If you have a car, it's no trouble at all, though. - The quality of the building really relies on the quality of the staff. For the first year I lived at 2121 Belmont, it was amazing! The past few years have been great, as well. There were a few years in-between, though, that were sketchy at best: no cleaning the trash rooms, no cleaning pet waste in front of the building. Once had a maintenance guy walk into my apartment without notice while I was in the shower--that guy no longer works there. Otherwise, a great building. Would have stayed much longer if it weren't for COVID--I moved to a more walkable neighborhood, since public transit is best avoided.

Yeah I did still look around for other options but this still beat all of them without a doubt. The rooms are absolutely amazing! My favorite features are the hardwood floors, high ceilings, floor-to-ceiling windows, and the excellent security, especially the package room. Even though I lived in a studio, the space feels much larger because of the big windows. The natural light that floods the room is incredible, and I love it! That said, there are a few things I wish were different. For instance, I wish the 1+ bedroom units also had hardwood floors, the showers were walk-in instead of tubs, and the washer/dryers were updated (they look a bit outdated but still work great). Despite these minor dislikes, everything else more than makes up for it. The leasing office team, Rhea and Kennedy, along with the concierge, Robert, are incredible and always a joy to talk to. They go above and beyond to help with anything you need. Another huge plus is the location! The building is situated right next to the MAX train, with one side taking you to the Portland Airport and the other side to the Hillsboro Airport. If there is an availability, I would consider this place for anyone!

I am then told by concierge that she was a temp and they went out to lunch until 2. I advised I had an appointment and she said she could not do anything. Fine, I waited. At 1:55 three members arrived back and I informed the manager I had an appointment to which the manager (Kristen) stated that must've been AI generated and someone would be with me shortly. Daja arrives and says hi Terrence, sorry for the wait. So the fact that she knew my name without me saying it lets me know you did know you had an appointment to see a unit and chose to blow it off. I go on the tour and she had a flat affect, not rude, but certainly not pleasant. I toured the unit only because I waited and paid for parking. It is irritating to deal with unprofessional behavior. If the manager who apparently does not understand how to run the leasing department, she should not be there. And for $3k for an apartment, perhaps be pleasant to a future resident.

I was told by the current manager that the corporate lawyer for DSL would not pay for the damages to my bedroom furniture as it was 'weather related', also my rental insurance did not cover my damages bc it was obviously poor construction. DSL did no maintenance/construction to fix this issue. I also heard that the 4th floor leaking problem has been an issue with other apartments on the 4th floor as well we East 12th apts. During my 2 years at DSL I saw a very high turn over rate of managers and leasing consultants float through the door. Also the back bike cage was broke into 3 or 4 times by tweaker guys which was unsettling especially due to the number of people coming in and out of the back door at all hours of the day (espec. walking their dogs). I was relocated to the floor below and I was immediately unsettled by how loud the tenant above me was. I could easily hear every step. Even though I complained, it didn't do much. These walls and floors are paper thin and I am deterred from renting a 'modern' apt in Portland ever again. Even though these apts look nice I know multiple tenants at IDM properties that have broken their lease bc they are so unhappy living there. I absolutely do not recommend living here...

They are great to connect to most of Portland, I should know I ride them almost every day. The area has some nice walkable coffee shop/ restaurants/ convenience store/ bars. Nice mix of people and ages and but run like hell if you care that it be "smoke free". The cigarette and weed smoke will flood your apartment and management will tell you that if you can identify which of your neighbors is smoking and prove it (how exactly?), they will take action. But they will do nothing to get the smoke out of the hall. I've never seen so many smokers except passing the local AA meeting on their break.

There are drawers in the closet stairs. There's a combination safe that I never cracked, and I like to think there were secrets locked away inside it (probably not). The apartments have the original fixtures and glasswork, mine had the original telephone and clawfoot tub as well. It was just a lovely place to live, and it was wonderfully managed by Darlene. My partner and I just left for bigger space, but we wish we could have taken Darlene with us! And we wish we could have stayed there forever. One thing to know about the area, however, is that it's very near Jeld-Wen field. That means that if you drive a car, you'll have to plan a head on Timbers game nights as there will be zero parking anywhere nearby. If you pay for monthly parking right beside the building, you'll also need to plan ahead for Sundays as the lot fills up with church-goers on Sunday nights. This is no slight against The Gentry - they can't help it! But it's something I wish I had known going in. That said, plan ahead, and it won't wreak havoc on your life at The Gentry.

Today I chatted with her about the security in the bike room. She didn't promise to make all the improvements I proposed, but she listened carefully, thought about them critically, and is going to investigate a handful of them. There also hasn't, to her knowledge, been any theft from the bike room since they installed digital locks for the bike room (and throughout the building) about six months ago. Natalee also was very helpful the other day with some internet issues I was having. Long story short, I got a new router and needed to contact whoever deals with the networking equipment in the building, CenturyLink is terrible, but Natalee stuck with it and was patient and responsive throughout the process. She was thoughtful enough to recommend ditching CenturyLink in favor of Astound, which I did. Now I am paying like $40/month less for 10x faster internet from a provider that has great customer service. There are, however, some issues that stem from corporate, as opposed to our on-site management staff. Digital keypads were installed on our apartment doors to replace physical locks and keys. In chatting with other residents, people seem pretty frustrated by them. The flat touchscreen provides no tactile feedback. It's easy to "misclick", especially when your hands are full. Etc, etc. Management never consulted residents to see how they feel. Similar story with (presumably expensive) renovations to the common areas. Ultimately though, they are issues I could live with. Aside from management, I think what I said in my initial review is still mostly true: super convenient location, clean building, nice common areas, thick walls that seem nearly soundproof, no bugs, fantastic maintenance, but sketchy homeless people and drug use around the building and the Safeway in particular. I think the sketchiness around the building is probably a big thing you should consider. Some people are bothered by it more than others. If you mind your business, objectively, I don't think the risk is anything to worry about. But subjectively, you might feel uncomfortable. I'd recommend stopping by after 10pm once or twice to get a sense of how it makes you feel. On a more positive note, I'd also recommend getting a feel for the location and the area. Think about what destinations you frequent and how easy they are to get to. Supermarkets, gyms, restaurants, bars, farmers markets, parks, dispensaries, coffee shops: there are lots of good options close by. I really like that Asa is pretty centrally located. Head south and you'll hit downtown and PSU. West and you'll hit Nob Hill and 23rd. North and you've got Mississipi, Alberta and St. Johns. East and you've got various cool neighborhoods. And it's all easy to access via foot, bike, streetcar, bus, or MAX. I don't have a car and make my way around the city just fine. If living at Asa (or another centrally located building) allows you to get rid of your car and save $500-1,000/month, that might be worth paying a premium for.

Its new, its convenient to shopping and gyms and bars and seems to have very friendly neighbors living here - no awkward silence in the hallways or elevators at all. If you choose this place its in the middle of a big city. Your going to have all the problems and concerns of living in a big city with a lot of people. If your young you probably are willing to deal with that trade off - if your married and have a couple kids - you probably want to find a quiet suburb on a hill away from everybody else. I liked the door code to get in the building and the lobby. Is the door code 100% sure thing somebody who doesn't belong there sneaks in? No, but it probably weeds out 99.5% of the riff raff. I visited my friend here - he had a beautiful place with a very rare outdoor large patio - not a balcony as many might have here - he had a full blown outdoor space - very very nice. Maybe you live here and don't like it - well, you've got the wrong unit - sour grapes. Don't be like that. What I enjoyed most was being in walking distance to all the bars during my visit. Really its all about location - and I think the new clean building with views and amenities is the cherry on top.

Our friends that visit say it looks like we live in a big treehouse since the greenery comes so close to our balcony. On any given day, there are loads of chubby squirrels to watch and we really enjoy the quietness at night. Our apartment is large and a great value. We have a couple of cars and were able to purchase multiple carport spots. We had a problem with one of our toilets when we moved in and maintenance was super quick and friendly they even replaced a light bulb for us while they were here. We are planning to live here for a very long time.
