We kicked things off with edamame - simple and exactly what you'd expect (hard to mess that up). From there, we shared the chicken soup dumplings, which were loaded with broth and seasoned chicken. I always wonder how they manage to make those, but that's a mystery for another day. The vegetable spring rolls came out hot and crispy. They could've used more filling, but the thin wrapper made them extra crunchy, which I liked. Surprisingly, the star of the show wasn't the dumplings - it was the fried rice. Something about it just kept me going back for more. I'm usually not big on rice, but even my daughter said it was, in her words, "obnoxiously good." We also tried bubble tea (my daughter ordered it for me), and it was my first time having one with a fruity flavor inside the boba - "slamming" is the only way to describe it. Service-wise, the staff and hostess were polite and attentive throughout. Overall, I'd give The Ugly Dumpling a strong 4 out of 5.
