I wanted so much to love Soybean, but it was all around average. I started with some curry puffs. They were supposedly chicken, but we're actually mostly potatoes and very bland. Really pretty though. Then I opted for red curry duck. The duck was fine, but the rest of the dish felt like it came out of cans. And there was a preponderance of pineapple chunks. Absolutely the best!!!!! We have been going here for 25 years +. The service is great, very fast. The owners ( Peter and Ahn ) have been so wonderful, you feel like family. There is plenty of parking out front. Bathrooms are kept clean. The food is hot ( temp ) when it comes out. I was not that excited to come here but my dining partner wanted curry so we were checking it out. It had a nice vibe to it and the waitress was prompt and friendly. I wasn't that hungry so I went for the papaya salad. This decision had my dining partner change their order from curry to pad Thai. What?! We were there for her curry! She said the pad Thai would go better with the papaya salad. Ok. The food came and it was good. Really good. My non-curry ordering dining partner stated that it was the best papaya salad she's had in her life! Now coming from Hawaii where we can eat a lot of papaya salad, that's a huge statement. My dad and I came here for lunch one day :) It was pretty empty since it was a weekday but we saw a bunch of people get take out orders. I got the Thai ice tea which was good but made with the wrong milk so it tasted alittle off. We ended up getting the lunch specials of pad Thai and pad see ew with shrimp. For appetizers we got the fried gyzo which was really good and the fried tofu (just okay alittle dry). The pad see ew was really good! Seasoning and noodles were perfect. Great find in Pike Creek Newark area! Amazing Thai food, got Chicken Satay to share and Pad Thai, Pad Phed, and Drunken Noodles entrees for dinner on a weeknight. Was pretty slow on the weeknight we went in, 1-2 other parties dining in around 7:30pm. Nice ambiance, spacious, quiet, and clean! Loved the food, and our server was so kind, joking around with us and offered to take a picture of our group! Very kind people, service was great. Be wary of the spice level! Thai spicy is pretty spicy, especially with the food being freshly cooked/hot as well, definitely need regular water refills! Also loved their Thai tea, a classic. The noodles are always perfectly cooked, with a delightful balance and savoriness in the sauce and the protein (I chose chicken) was tender and well-seasoned. Really great Thai food and very friendly service. I had the Tom Yom Koong to start. I asked for it spicy, and it had good flavor, but it was not very spicy. I still enjoyed it. My entree was the Pad Woon-Sen with chicken. It was a very nice dish with glass noodles and a sweeter, not biting flavor. Very well done and not something I normally see in Thai restaurants. The rest in my party enjoyed their meals, too. Service was friendly, but quite slow. They seemed overwhelmed and understaffed for an early evening. Definitely would go back if in the area. read more

My Pad Thai was pretty solid, as were the spring rolls, but the chicken satay was dry, and my wife found her teriyaki to be disappointingly bland. Also, I was disappointed that the establishment refused to honor an unused gift certificate (issued by the restaurant for their own establishment, dated 2017, and given to me as a gift). The restaurant cited a policy that their gift certificates are only valid for one year from date of issue (but that's bordering on stealing money if the purchaser or holder gets nothing in return for the money spent). To their credit, the establishment did offer a 20% discount on the meal instead, but that amount fell short of the actual gift certificate amount...a disparity that becomes greater when considering the impact of inflation: it wasn't a large denomination, but the amount of money paid for the certificate back then went *a lot* farther than it does today! read more

We decided to try a new place for Asian food on a Friday night. The service was slow throughout the night so I was glad we weren't in a major rush, but it left the evening a bit long with kids. Overall, the food is good. Not too spicy for us and a bit sweet. Enjoyed the roti chanai as a starter to the meal. The roti was nice warm and flaky. The tom kha gai was sweet and lemony, very flavorful and a hit with our group. We shared the other dishes, which were panang curry, pad thai and pad see you. We found the portions to be healthy size for thai dishes, even the pad see you, which was a kid portion. We had to take leftovers home, which we enjoyed the next day. Soybean is one of the hidden gems of Pike Creek! I was referred by a friend years ago to try their General Tso's (think hangover Chinese takeout but fine dining quality and more flavor) and I wasn't steered wrong. Soybean's array of menu options and consistent delicious taste have me hooked as a loyal patron. While the General Tso's is no longer my go-to, it's only because the rest of their menu is just as delicious. I swear by the Pad Kee Mao. And their mini dim sum appetizer is a crowd pleaser. Consolation shout out to the Tom Yum soups! They used to be dine-in or take-out but have added additional pick-up/delivery options through DoorDash, etc. The most cost friendly way to order is by calling them directly. DoorDash adds a bunch of fees. PRO-TIP: if you're getting shrimp as your protein, they'll take the tails off for you if you ask. #soybean read more

Family members have a combined history of eating here over 50 times and when our 2 year old grand daughter, Lily devours Pad See You with 2 fists in a gleeful fury while asking "more", this restaurant wins. 4.7/5 Pad See You. "Pad" means fried, "See You" is a house recipe soy based sauce, fried on yummy soft, pliable, flat rice noodles with chicken seared slightly but not dried. Served with onions, bell pepper, and a small amount of beaten egg and a mild Thai spice make for a flavorful dish. We share this big dish with our 2 year old granddaughter. Cut up large noodles are easy to grab and the cut chicken chunks are delicious even for toddler. 4.5/5 Pad Thai: A fried, moist noodle mixed with small amounts of beaten egg, scallions and a very good sauce. The family favorites are served with chicken or small square shaped tofu chunks. Get extra ground peanuts on the side and don't be afraid to add the lime to taste. I prefer the chicken version. You can ask for a three dish hot spice condiment selection that will give you any degree of heat. 4.6/5 Mee Siam. Very good. A dry, soft, wok fried, super thin angel hair, rice noodle with hints of beaten egg, onion, large bell pepper slices, celery, and curry powder. I eat this with extra chicken and combine all the ingredients in each bite. This is a mild dish so don't be afraid of the hot pepper rating on the menu. Mee Siam means Siamese noodle in Malay similar to Singapore Mai Fun but drier and less yellow in color. 4.7/5 Gang Kiew Wan - Green curry. This soupy coconut milk base with chicken is the bomb. The healthy coconut oil (good for the heart) pulls the color and fragrance out from the spices. If it is good enough for the monks, you will love the taste experience. All the curries are good but our favorite is green. This is a big dish so we order extra rice at the end and take leftovers home. It does not have a lot of spice heat, but the key to enjoying this dish is mixing it with rice to balance the spice to your liking. Thai ice coffee has sweet condensed milk, Also good. Soybean is not about soy food. It is great Malaysian food served by a Malaysian husband and wife team. Restaurant decor is intimate, with soft music and a bar is available but most customers populate the tables. Soybean honors a Christian Sunday as a holy day, worthy of shutting down for the day.
