The owner takes the time to write notes on each record about the quality of the vinyl OR just a quick word on the actual music. You can listen to anything before buying it both on headphones or over the store's sound system if you ask nicely (or maybe that was just for me cuz I'm so special??? :) There's a $5/$6 bin with some fun older stuff. 5 stars isn't enough…read more This is my favorite record store in the country (sorry Banana's Warehouse in Clearwater - your variety just isn't there) The owners and staff are super friendly and encyclopedic with their knowledge- I just go here and grab anything that looks cool or I've never heard of, pop it on at the listening station (crucial) and always leave with things I've never heard but am now a better music fan having purchased This store has been responsible for so much musical growth for myself and has even translated into my own art. I owe these fine folks a lot, certainly more than my monetary contributions over the years could ever even come close to - this is a Portland institution and I hope it stays open forever. Also - if you're lame or listen to super popular newer bands/acts, there's throngs of other places in Portland that will gladly take your money and sell you what you're after. If this is the case and you accidentally step into Little Axe, things totally happen but maybe don't feel compelled to leave a nasty review because of this. They're doing what they do at an extremely high level, even if it doesn't appeal to your (potentially) limited tastes.

But the true X-Factor IMO is the staff and how well they treat their customers, I am not what some would call a regular but I have been shopping with them soft the last few years and I am always greeted with a smile and asked if I'm looking for anything specific, and if there is anything they can help find for me. This store has stuff that doesn't look like the same stuff you can buy at any store nor the cheap stuff. Rather it's good quality and well designed. It's a little small and crowded but luckily I was just able go get my kiddo's stroller through. The woman at the shop was friendly. I'm glad we stopped here and found some cute things to bring home with us.

My friends live in the area and had told me about a delightful restaurant they both liked which turned into a cafe/bookshop. For years they set "Andie traps" for me as encouragement to move from the East Bay CA to the PNW. This was one of the places they baited me with and I was so delighted to get to experience it for myself with them as we just moved to Portland earlier this summer. The Bookish space is welcoming and adorable. If you think "there aren't too many books", you would be correct, but I'm a firm believer that quantity doesn't always win over quality when it comes to books. That is to say, you may not find a book that you're intentionally looking for, but there's a high probability an unexpected book is waiting to find you. There's a fabulous selection of books for just about every reader's tastes. The decor and arrangement is inviting and pleasing to the senses. There's space for events and classes and plenty of cozy seating around to enjoy your drink. We all enjoyed some iced chai on the back patio shaded by the trees overlooking Lacamas Lake. The folx working at Bookish are a freaking delight-- fun, warm, welcoming, and they craft delicious drinks. I can't wait to return with my friends and I also look forward to bringing my fam as we continue our exploration of our new home in the PNW!
