This place has a fantastic selection of vinyl records! I love how organized everything is. They have a wide variety of music genres, from hip-hop, soul, rock/r&b to soundtracks. Their rock/r&b section was pretty big but majority of the records were sorted by artist which made it easy to browse. I ended up spending a decent amount of time in the store because I kept finding albums that I rarely find anywhere else. Prices are generally in line with what you'd find online, but if you catch one of their sales, you can score some great deals. The cashier was also incredibly friendly. First off, we got rid of our record player years ago and after finding out about Everyday Music, we now deeply regret it. This music store has a wide range of LPs and CDs from all kinds of genres and decades. There was also a stack of $5 CDs and honestly, I may now have to find myself a CD player as well! The only issue I have is the cost of each one, especially the newer records. I didn't expect it to be almost $30 each, but that's coming from someone who's not fully aware of how much these cost nowadays. I was just surprised, that's all. Woo Hoo this is a great record store! I found some gems in the new arrivals like an Emmitt Rhodes debut record first pressing from Dunhill Records.. Mind you I already had a first pressing of this record but, this one was in great condition and reasonably priced. So you got to get it right! Lots of new LP's and used, and great cd selection. They were playing cool stuff I had never heard and the staff was super nice! the store had a great vibe and if I was more browsing the day instead of on a mission I could have spent a longtime in here making the rounds! read more

I've bought vinyl and have sold vinyl here many times and had the best customer service. BUT unfortunately upon my last visit I had to endure one of the most negative customer service experience I've had in Portland. It felt as if my presence or any question I had was excruciating to the employee named Michael. To find out that he's the MANAGER was astonishing. Very dismissive and condescending. Overall, meh. Cool shop, definitely have a huge variety of music. I was really hoping for a bigger selection of vinyl records, I think there were maybe 25 in the whole store. If you're looking for CD's then this is definitely the place to go to. They probably have 10,000+. They also have a really big selection of DVD's, and a lot of those are 50 cents. Went to a concert at the crystal ballroom and had an hour to kill before doors opened, so I decided to mosey over to the record shop across the street...and WOW. I could've spent hours in there and spent a month's rent. Amazing selection of vinyl (and used CDs in the other side) from wall to wall. Definitely made me miss my old local favorite vinyl shop. Because I was flying home, I used restraint and only bought a copy of the Eels album, Souljacker, which I had been hunting for years. Make this a stop on your trip for sure, if you are a crate digger or just an avid music lover. So glad places like this still exist. read more

Ah memories. When I moved to Portland, I didn't know anybody! I would wander through downtown alone and spend my evenings digging through the CDs here. I'd put on a pair of the enormous headphones and listen to the latest albums or staff recommendations. They used to be open until midnight so I would first go to Powell's (open til 11), then wander over here and eventually make my way back to St. Johns on the 4 late into the night. Then one day, it happened. Alex L. was peeking at me through the large windows on West Burnside; somewhere between the Electronica and Rock section, we fell in love. From that moment on, the soundtrack to our relationship has varied from low-fi indie to gangsta rap (okay, mostly gangsta rap) and I know that whatever phase we're moving through, Everyday Music has the tunes to match. As the worlds becomes more digital, I find myself placing sentimental value on the more tangible items like books and CDs. In particular, I was given a record player for my birthday this year (can you guess from who??) and I know that Everyday Music will play a huge role in building my record collection and even more memories. There's an entire half of the store devoted to records - it's ridiculous. They even sell wooden crates so I can look hip and impress people with my hoarding. Aside from the sappy feelings I've attached to this place, Everyday Music has always been my go-to place for music shopping. You don't have to be afraid of the staff here, they don't follow the pretentious stereotype and will talk music with you at the counter. If you wake up one day realizing your 14 year old self did not like very good music, Everyday Music will pay cash on the spot for those horrible CDs that you've been hiding from house guests. Not very much mind you, but it's less hassle than selling them online for a penny. And no one will ever know how much you loved emo music. read more

Less than a year ago I acquired a turntable and my parent's old vinyl collection. This was the start of my addiction to record collecting. Everyday Music has been one of my favorite spots to go browsing, especially when I'm bored and looking to get out of the house for an extended period of time. There is something magical about getting lost in the store flipping through the almost endless bins full of records. One of the nice things about EM is that they sell both used and new records. The used items seem to be priced based on quality, (Fair, Good, Fine). Any time I have needed help, the staff has been nice enough to answer any of my questions. For the most part the staff respects the privacy of their patrons and allow them to browse the day away. I have also typically enjoyed the music they play overhead because record shopping would be a little too lonely if done in a silent room. The only thing that I'm not totally keen on is they seem to not want to exchange things, even if the record skips like crazy upon getting it home. For this reason I try to closely inspect all used records before I purchase them. read more

The only complaint i would have is that their cd selection seemed limited. I looked for several popular bands such as My Chemical Romance and Car seat headrest and was met with an empty stock with the label still there. I found a ton of old classical music on vinyl, but the majority consisted of music I never heard of. There was also a decent sized collection of Neil Diamond.. unfortunately I'm not a fan. So i called in to the store a day in advance as the website suggested to get there current buying status. Lady on the phone told me to bring it in and that in 72 hours they would look over my collection and give me a price. Made the drive downtown from Forest Grove, paid for parking and went in. Immediately they got on my case about not wearing a mask, even though only 1 of the 2 of them were wearing one. I said sorry, forgot it in my car, but doesn't that mean you should be wearing yours as well? She replied "I'm going on my break!" Sorry, but thats not the way it works, but i guess it is for the hypocrite with the "Do as i say, not as i do" mentality. Employee one goes on her break, while employee two gives me a hand truck to walk back to my car with and lug my fairly large collection of cds in. He looks at the large clear case, doesn't even open the lid, and says sorry, were not interested in any of these. Every genre of music was in there, all mint condition in there cases. Made some excuse about downsizing? Why didn't they mention this on the phone the night before? In the end, he doesn't even offer to walk back with me to my car to help load and take back his hand cart. Never going to this store again, and will recommend all my friends do the same. read more

What in the world is better than spending some quality time on Burnside scanning through Powells Books? Everyday Music is what. Great big place chock full o' music and always playing something over the stores music system that I guarantee you've never heard. I know it is a hip and cool place, because I only see hip and cool people working there, but it would be nice to get some decent service there just once. I guess if you're not showing some world class legs or have clevage falling out of your top you're just not worth their time. Swear, only time I see one of the employees run is when a equally hip, cool or goth chick is at the register. But they have my tastes, whether they like it or not. My rating does not reflect their selection. They have a very large selection of music, from vinyl to cd to even cassettes. Everything is organized by genre and they have practically any title or artist you could be looking for. I even found a rare jazz diva that I've been looking for and multiple albums at that. The three stars is really due to their pricing scheme for their vinyl. Now I realize vinyl is back on top for music lovers and, like everything else in life, it's not as cheap as it used to be. But even their used vinyl of generic music was overpriced. I can even begin to afford some of the more worthy titles. And rare titles are completely off the discussion table. The staff is definitely quiet and off to the side. If directly asked a question, they are on point with their musical knowledge. But none are too eager to offer opinions or suggestions, which I found odd but to each introvert their own. Overall, if there's something you've been looking for and can't find or buying a friend a special album, this most definitely is your place. If your just adding to your collection or looking for a more common album, this may be too pricey for the trouble. read more

When selling vinyl records regardless of the condition you WILL be told that your stuff is "pretty scratched up" as an excuse to pay you less $. If it was that bad condition they just wouldn't buy it because EM does have a huge selection of new releases. Considering the size of their storefront and the number of employees working, they need to cut corners by ripping the seller off. OK to buy from if in the area, but dont waste your time selling your stuff here read more

Everyday Music is like therapy for me. What I love about this place (and its sister store on NE Sandy) is not only how vast the selection is, but also how roomy it is. Other excellent record stores in town can oftentimes be marred by feeling like you're packed into a can of sardines with no room to pass other people and essentially getting trapped unless you ask someone to move down the aisle to let you out, or having someone stand there waiting for you to move even though you're busy flipping through records. It's like trying to pass the drink cart in an airplane aisle. No fun, and distracting. EM doesn't suffer from that problem. Some afternoons I'll show up and spend hours going through half the alphabet of their vinyl and leaving with a huge stack of records. It's such a pleasant and enjoyable experience, and the record selection here is massive. Seriously, whatever you're looking for, you're most likely going to find it here unless you're after Discogs-type rarities. I see quite a few comments below where people are complaining about the staff. Welcome to record stores. "Exquisite customer service", "sublime manners" and "genuine smiles" aren't what anyone is interested here. Record shopping is an introvert experience. read more

I called on Record Store Day a few days ago to check inventory. I was transferred to someone in the back, and instructed to ask for Augie. The guy who answered said Augie was not available. I then said "Listen - I totally get it's chaos there right now, but any idea if you have this specific record left, as far as you can tell? I completely get if it's not possible to check!" Here's the answer the guy gave me: "We don't check inventory on Record Store Day," and then hung up the phone. No other words came out of his mouth. No problem about not checking inventory - obviously I get it, which is why I prefaced my call with my above comment. Hanging up on someone who is being nice, though? Uh - not ok. To the jerk who hung up on me, here's the deal with life: when someone is really understanding upfront, don't hang up on them. Even if someone isn't perfect upfront, still don't hang up on them. Unless someone is unmistakably abusive, don't hang up on them. To the manager/ owner of this store: I might recommend identifying this individual, and removing him from your staff. Doesn't Record Store Day prove it's already hard enough to stay in business as an independent record store? This employee is hurting, not helping, Everyday Music. read more

This is my least favorite Everyday Music of the three in Portland/Beaverton. It's pretty big, with the CDs and Vinyl separated in two different rooms - but if you're looking for anything rare or obscure, you're likely to have much better luck going to the EM on Sandy - which has much better selection both quality and quantity wise. If you're just looking to get the latest mainstream vinyl or cd, then you'll be fine going here, but expect to pay more than you could get it elsewhere. Parking is also an issue - expect to drive around for a while trying to find a spot on the street (which will also cost you.) The staff is always friendly here, but if you only have time to go to one Everyday Music - go to the one on Sandy (which is, in my opinion, the best record store in the state.) read more
