I recently walked into Music Millennium and immediately saw a PERFECT copy of the Xanadu motion picture soundtrack on vinyl, sitting in a bin. Two things came to mind: 1. Who sells a perfect copy of the Xanadu motion picture soundtrack? What's wrong with you? 2. Only the best record store on the entire west coast would know to buy a copy of the Xanadu motion picture soundtrack. And there you have it. Music Millennium is the best record store on the entire west coast. Oh sure, I have about 5,000 other reasons, but that's the most recent one. I've yet to pay a visit and walk out without buying at least 3-4 albums. Add the CDs, DVDs, and all manner of other music/movie-related goodness and this place is the gold standard. read more

Music Millennium has been a trailblazer in the PDX community for decades now and is by far one of the biggest record shops in the area that I have been to. They are located in the Burnside area where street parking will be your best bet. Inside, they have tons of physical media ranging from vinyls, CDs, DVDs, and more. Prices are very fair here and there is a huge selection. All of the staff are friendly and welcoming. You definitely need to give yourself at least 1-2 hours to really look through everything! read more

My wife and I were in Lake Oswego to visit my sister and brother-in-law and he is an avid record collector and I was allowed to pick out one album for him to remember us by, so off I was. We entered the vast store and you are even able to order a beer while you walk among the cacophony of sound. I got a lager. I came upon soundtracks and decided to get him Pulp Fiction, one of my favorite movies and a heck of a soundtrack! They also got a Johnny Cash record, so it was a pretty good haul. The clientele and staff are all very "Portland" but everyone was super helpful. Records have gotten expensive, but my sister's record was in the discounted bin. I really loved the non-record selections as well.. they have everything from DVDs , to cassette to VHS' , boardgames and CDs . They even sell record players too ! This place really reminds me of amoeba as they also have in-store performances and even a bar within the store!!! Really cool place to take someone out on a date or just to hang and find hidden gems with friends. One of my favorite places that I visited in Portland by far. Also of course has the new stuff for those that still by CDs and the vinyl section is always fun to go though. What a collection! They have everything from classic older records to the brand new stuff being released. We spent at least an hour here and still didn't make it through all the records. You'll find vinyl that will transport you back in time, as well as, help you ride into the here and now. Albums are of course arraigned by genre and artist. You could spend hours both upstairs and downstairs perusing through everything, and selecting treasures to purchase. The staff is laid back, but happy to help or answer questions. They'll even help search for items for you, if you can't locate them. MM is also the go to hot spot for anyone in the music business, performers included. This is one of the places that defines Portland. Terrific place to shop for CDs or vinyl, and it also carries DVDs, music-related books, and "lifestyle items" such as socks, T-shirts, novelty goods. The place serves beer and coffee, so you don't have to leave if you're getting thirsty! And there are frequent events: in-store concerts/signings by local and touring acts; the annual Customer Appreciation BBQ in the parking lot, with free live music, food, beer, prizes etc all day; the sidewalk sales where you might find a great item for $2; and Record Store Day. Do you need a record or cd? They probably have it, and have it used so you can save a few $. They even have a few kpop albums (mostly boy bands and twice). Make sure you know what you're looking for or be prepared to spend the whole day going through the huge collection. Also, check for events and if your not a fan avoid them, the rows are a person and half at best so getting around when the place is crowded can be a bit difficult. The only issue is parking, as it can be a bit of a mission to find a spot close so you may need to do a bit of walking. read more

In some ways this is one of the best record stores in the city/country. It does have plenty of flaws though. It's very cliquey (have known numerous bands and musicians ignored when contacting this place) and after going here almost two decades one gets bored with the pretentious service (although not at all offended and sometimes amused). I wouldn't recommend bringing CD's here, they are extra picky and only give you 30%. With records they are also picky. For records I go to Mississippi, they give you 50-60% of selling price for good records. It's not even worth the gas to drive out to Music Millennium, they have the longest wait and unless you've got a lot of rare items in perfect condition don't expect to get much if anything. Living in Portland has been pretty rough and so I've had to sell my collection the last few years, the only times I go in now are to try to sell them back the records I bought from them and then leave frustrated that I even drove out here. The good memories of this place are fading so I thought I'd write a decent review before it turns all bad... read more

It's been around for 50 years and has outlasted all the chains like Tower Records and Sam Goody for a reason. Everyone who works there is a walking wiki of music. Every corner (and the upstairs in the back) is packed with vinyl and CDs. You can usually grab a beer there - which makes the hours you'll spend flipping through records that much more enjoyable. How in the world have I never reviewed Music Millennium before? In a word, Music Millennium is the best you'll find! The selection is huge (vinyl, CDs, DVDs, you name it), the staff is friendly and knowledgeable, you can get all manner of unique candies (and beer, if you're into that), and there's TONS of easy, nearby street parking. Particularly noteworthy are the appearances and performances by so many truly outstanding solo artists and bands there. I've seen lots of really amazing favorites at Music Millennium over the years. Terry Currier, the owner, is always there, and is one of the friendliest and most helpful people I've ever met. He TRULY cares about his customers, as is evidenced by his annual customer appreciation day, and his employees passing out snacks and refreshments to those waiting in line to get into the venue to see performances. I've been to dozens of record stores all over the U.S. in my time, and Music Millennium is far and away the best I've ever encountered. Definitely stop in...frequently. Yes the music millennium falcon! One of the larger record stores I've visited in this weird city called Portland (weird but lovely). So much to be found either new or used. The used and cheap ones are below the bins. Takes a lot of effort to sort through but your patience will be rewarded. That's what I love about record shopping. More than records, there's plenty of cds and dvds avail for sale and trade. Everyone who works there can drop knowledge on any type of music or film so ask away. I'll be back again some day. It's wonderful to know that places like this still exist. I was helping my other in law clean out some things which included a large amount of old records, 45s, cds and more. In Los Angeles, where I currently reside, it's a whole big to-do to try and sell media like this and rarely do they take anything. So I wasn't sure if the effort would be worth it, but I was very pleasantly surprised! Call ahead and make sure there is a buyer in-store that day before lugging all your stuff. The buyer on duty was very friendly and took care in assessing what I had brought. In the end I was able to walk away with almost $100 for my mother in law which leads me to really trust the store. Sure, you'd make (much) more if you took the time to sell everything yourself... but who has time for that??? I walked away feeling positive and not like I was getting hosed. Not only that, but I asked the buyer if the rest (that he didn't take) was goodwill material or if he had any suggestions, and he was honest with me and said to try Everyday Music, which I did and made another $7! So I really respect their honesty here. While I waited, I wandered around the LARGE store and it's amazing what they have! Records, 45s, CDs, Dvds... even cassette tapes!!! They had some really rare stuff too. I almost walked away with a Beatles bootleg of Yellow Matter Custard, but this particular trip was about selling... not buying... But in the future, I know where to go! They had some pretty rare vinyl as well. All around very fun and brought me back to a nostalgic time when you could go into a record store and really explore and find some gems. There's PLENTY to explore here! read more

I always think of Music Millenium as the Amoeba of Portland. They sell a similar stock and volume of music, and equally feel like institutions with their respective music scenes. That being so, I often find myself making an excuse to stop by MM when I'm in town. Their vinyl selection weighs pretty heavily on new stock, but they have some used stock too and you can sometimes find a good deal. The new records cover a variety of genres, of course heavy on rock/pop, but a decent amount of soul, hip/hop, soundtracks, and more. I do feel like the prices here are somewhat on the high side (similar if not more expensive than Amoeba in some cases), but at least there is no tax. And as a random bonus (that I noticed on my last visit), you can now buy beer here too! Bringing beer and records together in one place is always a win. read more

This place racially profiles customers. Was followed around in store by multiple staff members. It's a really terrible vibe. If you are a white man, you'll be fine. I observed multiple white men milling about the store unbothered by staff. The value is not great. Most things are overpriced, and the selection is: meh. I'm writing an updated review for Music Millennium because I've been able to spend two long stops there in recent weeks while visiting a family member who moved to Portland a few years ago. This store has to be among the 10 or so best record shops in the United States. The stock of CDs and vinyl records of all descriptions (new, used, etc.) in just about any genre you could name is among the most bountiful I've seen anywhere. There aren't many record stores like this left! I enjoyed my interactions with the staff, who are very knowledgeable about music in general and the shop in particular. Everyday is Record Store Day at Music Millennium! A huge selection of used CDs and new and used vinyl, you can really find anything your heart desires here. I was pleased to see a vinyl copy of Loveless, and also a few CDs by some of my favorite indie rock Milwaukee bands. Shop keepers are helpful. I've been coming to Music Millennium for years. When in Portland it's a must stop. Always find something I need. Last stop I even found a cd by NW 80's artist Johnny & The Distractors & Crazy 8's CDs and I had to have them. And if you need KEEP PORTLAND WEIRD swag well they have a nice stock pile. Also the vinyl selection is not bad. Good mix of new and used LP's at a fair price. Buy local and shop at MM, or you'll regret it. read more
