I've been coming here since I moved into the city in July. Love the facility and the people. Community is great- they host regular events, members on Saturdays will get brunch and drinks afterwards at times which speaks to the genuine camaraderie we have. It's not just a few classes I come to a week to improve my fitness and strength, but I've made some friends here which I'm excited to keep in touch with. Coming back from an injury where I tore my hip labrum from powerlifting, I've been able to see the results of my recovery and improving strength. We use MINDBODY and SugarWOD to log our workouts and check the schedule each day. The coaches are all great, are very knowledgeable, and have the perfect balance of motivating you, but not so much so that you're going to hurt yourself (Ex: Steph telling me to increase my weights after seeing my breeze through the workout). They watch your form and tell you to scale down if the form needs work. Ryan also runs a lifting program which is extremely legit complete with an excel spreadsheet where he planned out each workout to optimize your strength improvement for CrossFit in addition to adding isolation exercises that can target muscle groups that might not be as commonly used during CrossFit workout. Definitely a great addition for people who love to lift. The manager, Colin and all the front desk staff, they're very responsive on the phone and will answer all your questions for memberships. If you're going on vacation, they'll pause your membership without the hassle that comes with being a part of larger gyms (like when you thought you paused your membership but ended up getting charged several months over the summer). Customer service couldn't be better, no complaints. If you're thinking of joining up, be sure to ask about a hospital Mount Sinai discount or a student discount if you're a broke graduate student or resident. Saw a free class on Instagram and was curious about CrossFit. Great introductory class, amazing space and community, and shout out to Alex Miller making the class so enjoyable! The intro class was very informative but also a lot of fun. Crossfit has always been intimidating to me because of all the heavy-weight lifting. Alex was able to not only explain through his own journey with CrossFit but kept it easy to understand. I learned that CrossFit is actually an individual challenge for yourself to not only perfect your techniques but push limits you didn't know you could. That is what captivated me. The class begins with a series of warm-ups and stretches. Alex stresses the importance of form to avoid injury. He gradually transitions into your every-day exercises such as squats and then introduces a PVC stick to mimic the barbells. We did use a barbell with weights for the last set. I finally learned how to do a proper deadlift with a barbell. Alex offered plenty of direction and adjustments, which is great for someone who is starting to get into weight training. For the last 15 minutes of class, he set circuit challenges that incorporate the moves we learned. EVF shares the space with RowHouse. Rowhouse is located on the first floor and EVF gym is located on the basement level. The basement level was big enough for two classes to be happening at the same time. My only complaint would be that there are only two bathrooms for both studios (both gender neutral and have showers in them). I believe they strategically schedule the classes in order to avoid both studios end class at the same time and create chaos. All in all, I would love to come back to attend an EVF 360 class and maybe another CrossFit class with Alex! read more

I've taken several EVF 360 classes at this studio through Classpass now and every single time, it's kicked my ass. They offer boot camps inside (downstairs - upstairs is Row House) as well as boot camps outside, where they take you by the Hudson/Riverside Park South. All of the trainers here have been very encouraging and friendly and aren't judgey (on newcomers or those who are trying to get into shape. Sometimes I go to classes and the trainers basically leave you be and don't correct your form or give you any tips or even encouraging... not at EVF! While the studio itself isn't the cleanest thing (the floor leaves you very.... gritty and dirty from the little pieces of black stuff that come off the floor), I feel super accomplished after every class. I also like that each time I've taken it, it's completely different. Most of the indoor ones I've been to incorporate some kind of cardio like jump rope, rowing, or ski erg-ing. It's kind of out of the way for people who don't live on the fat West Side, but definitely worth a trip! read more

Best people, coaches and community! Hats off to coaches Patrick, Alex, Ryan, Ashley and the newly minted coach Nick for giving a great crossfit, powerlifting and Olympic lifting experience! Also to the front desk crew for always being awesome! My first experience here was the day before July 4th. I found EVF through my company benefits website and spoke with Colin who instantly put me at ease that this is a place I could be at home. I decided to try out a Crossfit session followed by their signature EVF 360 classes which are a mix of high intensity interval circuit type workouts just without barbells. My first crossfit class here was great with Alex coaching and giving great pointers for improving my squat. The EVF 360 class killed me after the Crossfit as the AC was down that day in the heat of summer. Ryan put us through our paces during EVF 360 and by the end I felt completely exhausted and ready to sleep. read more

It's really not fair for me to keep EVF CC a secret. I've been to a few other boxes in the city and nothing compares to the coaches and small class sizes at EVF. So far I've had Fred and Tim and both were fantastic. Regardless, all the staff is friendly and knowledgeable. They take the workouts very seriously and will push you to push yourself every class. I tried the other CrossFit gyms in the area and hands down EVF BOX is the best I found for several reasons. They offer a variety of classes beyond the standard CrossFit - ranging from strength to cardio. Regardless of which class you take, you'll spend all your energy and be back for more the next day. It's a small gym and small class sizes so you'll get lots of personal training and attention to work on techniques. I've taken classes with each instructor and all are patient, knowledgable, and a lot of fun. Finally, from the beginners to experienced CrossFitters - it's a real supportive community from the moment you walk in the door. So glad I found this place , my favorite class is the EVF 360 . Great interval training and wonderful instructors that are knowledgeable on training. Workouts are a full hour and I do notice a difference on my Fitbit and my body the next day. Upstairs is a rowing class that I believe is the same owner and I plan to try soon. This location is very clean and close to Upper West Side. This is one of the best places so far beside Rubble Boxing that I have been to in NYC. read more

I started last year during the 6 week New You challenge and rejoined this past Spring. My favorite classes are with Ashley and Miller but any are good to drop in on. I've never been a big fan of working out but the community here makes it fun. The front desk team makes everyone feel welcomed, especially Colin, who managed to get me to sign up for a 50 class pack. I was hesitant to join a crossfit box because I had heard all the rumors about people pushing themselves into injury. But I freaking love this box. The trainers are thorough and skilled, and your safety is paramount when doing your workout. The coaches are incredibly passionate about helping people achieve their goals. EVF was such a great experience for me! Originally, I purchased a package from GILT that included the on-ramp classes (pre-req for cross-fit) and a month of classes. On-ramp was 3 classes in one week to help introduce you to the program. Upon completion you could sign up for actual cross-fit classes. These were definitely informative sessions with a really small group (there was 6 of us) and you still got a good workout. However, I went the route of EVF 360 classes. These are definitely high intensity classes that are worth every minute. I've done a bunch of different classes before and this one BY FAR had me walking pretty slowly to the subway station. The hour would go by so fast! I would recommend them to anyone wants to get a great exercise in a class setting. I think that the price for these classes is reasonable - especially after you experience it for yourself. A bit about the actual space/employees: For being a 'box' this place was REALLY clean! I never felt like I was rolling around in someone else's sweat or anything. As for the instructors/employees - ALWAYS friendly and helpful. The instructors made sure you understood how to do the exercises and were always helpful in correcting your form. It was nice to not feel like someone was peering down on me the entire either. Unfortunately, my schedule conflicted with classes so I couldn't sign up for a monthly membership. But again, I would recommend this box to anyone!! read more

It was my first crossfit class ever - took an EVF 360 class through ClassPass and was definitely was sweatin it up! WHEN YOU GET THERE: - There's a cycling class on the first entrance floor and the crossfit area is below through the elevators, so be sure to clarify when you check in! - No key lockers are available - Showers are located in the one-person restroom but there is no locker room, so it's not really a place to stay and pamper yourself after a workout - If you're doing crossfit, there are benches in the sitting area so you can take your stuff with you if you don't want to use the locker CLASS: - Jumped right into it with a quick warm-up - Got split into four different groups and started circuits - Good organization and community encouragement feel COMMENTS: - Intense-ass EDM music with some hip-hop to get you amped up (I was so dead but then "Panda" came on and I re-found the energy to finish the last circuit strong LOL) - Good amount of space - If you're weak like me, you'll definitely be pushed! I have no upper body strength but the lightest weights were 10s **overall, I wish they explained form more. I love the intensity and energy of crossfit, but can also see how it can be dangerous since it's mostly about reps instead of proper form and posture - be mindful of how you do the moves and don't hurt yourself! read more

Love the EVF workout! It's always challenging, but always different. The class incorporates dumb bells, kettle bells, rowing machines and body weight movements, but is doable by all fitness levels. Young, old, pregnant, out-of-shape, runners and meatheads all come together for these hour-long workouts lead by the very friendly coaches. Jamie and Garen inspire, critique and provide a lot of humor. These are the kinds of guys who are totally into fitness and Cross Fit and love to teach you all they know, but also like beer, baseball, Broadway shows and have real lives that require eating carbs. There is zero attitude and zero intimidation, which I see is a big concern for many who are trying out Cross Fit gyms. This gym is clean and the space is large. Definitely recommend incorporating this class into your regular fitness regime. Update: I've been taking Guthrie's classes the last couple months and I also want to shout out some praise for his coaching--A hunk of a man that's also a lot of fun to work out with. He will make you laugh right before he makes you cry (tears by air squats and burpees). read more

I love this gym! I take the crossfit and EVF360 classes. The coaches are absolutely amazing and friendly. And they try to watch every move you make to ensure that you are doing every movement correctly so that you don't hurt yourself either. The short version: One of the top gym experiences I've had and I've been to many through ClassPass. Everyone I've interacted with here, from the front desk staff, trainers and management have been friendly, helpful and professional. The facilities are clean and spacious. Equipment is well maintained and all in working order. Amenities include showers, towels, key-less lockers, basic toiletries, and dryers. However as mentioned in other reviews, the two showers are inside the two separate restrooms so this is definitely not the place to take your time and pamper yourself post-workout. The Long Review: I first found this place through ClassPass with their EVF 360 class which is a Crossfit based class without the barbells. First class was with Alex who was super welcoming and took the time to break down all the individual movements for me and give me corrections on form during the workout. Lot of regulars in the class and got a good vibe from the community. Eventually ran out of class passes to use here so I spoke to Colin, their membership services coordinator about a month-to-month unlimited membership. While they don't advertise it on their website, they do have an Off-Peak unlimited membership for 9am-5pm classes so if you've got an odd hours job like me you can go that route. Their Crossfit On-Ramp is a quick and hassle free 3 hour course you can knock off in one session and then get right into the main Crossfit classes or my favorite class there - EVF Barbells with Patrick which is offered Monday and Wednesday nights. Great atmosphere, excellent attention to form and overall kick ass workout. Highly recommend! read more

Awesome box! I joined this box about 6 months ago as a newcomer to CrossFit. Suffice it to say I was super nervous but my on-board coach thoroughly explained and modeled the basic lifts and movements, making sure that I was performing them properly and safely. From that on-board to my class this morning I am always impressed by the staff and coaches. The staff are friendly and helpful (even at 5:30am) and the coaches are the best in the business, always quick to provide encouragement or input/advice on form - shout out to Ryan, Patrick, Nick, Quinton, Alex. The workouts themselves are well-designed and challenging even when scaled by folks like me who can't (yet) do a muscle up. I've been comIng since August / September and I love it here. To give you an idea of just how much, there are no fewer than 5-6 gyms I can go to that are all more convenient for me. I go to EVF because the workouts are amazing, the coaches are attentive and helpful, and because the people are exceedingly friendly. I had been doing CrossFit for about 6 months when I joined, but the programming here has been so good and consistent that I have become far more proficient more quickly than I would have ever anticipated. Was very intimidated in the beginning by a bunch of tall very fit-looking guys and all the exercises I never heard of but it turned out to be a great class and everyone was very friendly. You can pick lighter weights to make sure you get technique right and not exhaust yourself prematurely. I plan to be back! read more

I am enrolled in the EVF monthly membership, which allows me to go as many times a month as I want. I completely love how challenging each class is and how organized and fun the coaches are. I moved to NYC 2 years ago and started discover some workout studios thru ClassPass. EVF became a home for me since then. The coaches are very attentive, welcoming, challenging and super technique supportive. The studio is clean, the quipment is quite new. The workout itself designed for all levels, and I could see by myself how fast i evolved from complete newby, to quite advances HIIT user. Amazing box with good quality equipment, and strong coaches who do well to sense what sort of coaching you respond to (anything from happy to discuss all movements to picking the key areas to improve) and most of all just want to have fun. The best thing about training at this place is the use of the "360" cardio sessions and integration of ergo (rowing) with sessions to ensure its not just a bulk up meat fest. I signed up for EVF 360 because I had one class left on Class Pass for the month, and couldn't find anything open at my usual studios. I signed up for the class a few hours before class, and boy am I glad I did! Crossfit can be intimidating because it's a lot of solo work once the instructor explains the different stations. As a dedicated yogi and spin enthusiast, I was definitely out of my element here. The instructor, Ryan, was incredible! There were about 12 people in the class, but he still managed to give everyone individualized attention. He came over and helped me with every exercise, and when I doubted my abilities he reminded me that the most important thing is that I showed up - the rest will come with time. I love that Cross fit's mentality is about celebrating all participants, no matter if they can do 2 push-ups or 200 push-ups. I felt so comfortable in this class, and I'm really grateful that Ryan took me under his wing. I'll definitely be coming back every week for Ryan's class. As someone who was new to Crossfit, I would highly recommend EVF. All of the coaches have been awesome in instructing the movements and giving feedback and encouragement to both beginners and advanced which I found important since some of the movements can be intimidating just starting out. The members are very welcoming and friendly. The 360 classes are also a great option if you're looking to mix things up between Crossfit and overall high intensity conditioning. In terms of cost, it's on par with what I was paying previously for a higher end gym membership. The plus here is with the added level of attention from the coaches...it's like having a personal trainer being there to push and encourage you for the same price. They really are that involved with each individual, but that's from my experience going to the early morning classes where class size can range from 6-12 people. read more

I've been at EVF for a year and half now and enjoyed every moment. Something about this place really instills in you a passion for fitness - I came in barely having a single proper air squat and was able to perform a muscle up a year later, and I've seen so many other friends here go through similar progressions. I like the workouts here. I have gone here about 50 times (usually with Jamie) and I get a great workout without getting injured. These workouts have really helped to strengthen my body. I have a bad L4/L5 disc and I have to do stretches and exercises to keep myself out of the pain. If I come to EVF at least once per week then my back will not give me any troubles. Literally like I have not had any disabling issues at all this year. EVF not only makes me stronger but Jamie is patient and takes the time to reinforce proper posture and form so when I pick up heavy items or engage my core muscles, they do not burst a disc. This workout is not for newbies, though. You should have some experience with doing planks, jumping rope, push ups and sit ups before coming. read more

I really miss this box. After having to leave my fav bootcamp in Astoria, I had a hard time finding the right fitness community in the city. I had visited Brick Grand Central and Crossfit NYC, but they felt sorta cliquey and the trainers never took as much interest in me, a barbell newbie, as I had wanted. A friend recommended this place, and after a useful intro session with Jamie (to show me the ropes on BB cleans, jerks, and snatches), I knew that I had found my place. Those barbell fundamentals have stayed with me now that I'm training on my own out of a commercial gym. Jamie is also an awesome trainer. Always super pumped, motivating, and paying attention to everyone's form and trying to push them to go just a little bit further. My previous bootcamp was HARD and I'm in pretty good shape, but this place did a fine job of kicking my butt (especially in it's own bootcamp class, EVF 360, which was my fav). I unfortunately had to stop going after my hours changed at work, but this place and Jamie hold a special place in my heart. I'll be back EVF!! read more
