Crossfit to me is about two things. 1. Community and 2. Coaching skills. The community at this gym is ok. People are generally friendly. The coaching however is deeply undertrained. The coaches mostly watch us exercise and give little to no meaningful feedback. A bunch of friends and i dropped in to take what you can call a reunion wod. The coaching staff and the facilities are great. The coaches are attentive and will help you master your technique/workouts. They have different options when it comes to their classes. Up stairs they hold Rx class for conditioning, which is good for those who are looking for cardio and/or strength. The downstairs section is a small but don't let that fool you as you'll get a great workout by taking their crossfit classes. The programming incorporates high-intensity interval training, strength training, and olympic lifting movements. Yoga and mobility classes are also offered and they have their own olympic barbell club for those just looking to focus on getting stronger in olympic lifting and even compete. I know crossfit is intimidating to many but give this workout a chance and thank me later. Although this was my first Crossfit gym, I'm reviewing SPOT after I've been a member at several different CrossFit gyms in the New York area. Here are some of the benefits: 1) It's a small gym with a max capacity per class of 12. This allows for more personalized training. 2) The WODs have a good amount of strength training. The workouts are posted online, so see for yourself - anyone can view them. 3) Trainers are kind and knowledge. 4) The juices and smoothies are amazing!! 5) One of the cheapest CrossFit gyms in NYC. There are two downsides to this gym, which justify the cheaper price point: 1) Since there is a max capacity, you may be locked out. However, if you know your schedule and book early, you'll never have a problem. 2) There are only two showers, and the locker room is on the smaller side. I showered at home. Hope this helps! The last six weeks at this box has taken me to the next level of my physical fitness. I love the training protocol, which has improved my endurance and strength. It has also given me a huge amount of body confidence, learning how to move effectively and efficiently. Coach Billy and staff are great motivators, knowledgeable and kind. The small group classes are scaled to each individual's capabilities within a supportive environment. They've integrated technology into their training sessions using Bluetooth Polar heart rate monitors with stats projected onto the wall so you can see how hard you are working. The bi-level facility is clean and locker room is decked out with all you need to shower up and go (toiletries, towels, hair dryer). This is for the RX30 fit location not CrossFit spot. If you're confused..don't get me started. I loved this class a lot! I used up my 10 classes and an extra free one if you write a nice review about the class. Now I wrote a nice review before all the new changes. One day during the evening I get a notification about something that didn't make sense. Their classes went from 45 mins to 30 mins. One of their best trainers Zachary isn't there. They took away many time slots. I noticed that there earliest weekend class is 10:15am. If I'm not mistaken I'm pretty it use to be 7am. Also why cut a workout from 45mins to 30mins? Fine if you do that at least give me an explanation as to why and not have me call the place. I also called to see what happened to Zachary and no explanation was given (big mistake) I really hope they don't let Shira go (she's also amazing) I'm so happy I used up my 10 classes before the new changes. But even happier that I didn't purchase more because I would've been highly upset. read more

I'm so hot and cold with any place to workout (especially if there is a contract). I was part of Lifetime Fitness in New Jersey (quit when I moved to NYC), crunch in NYC (quit because they didn't offer many early morning classes) and Equinox (amazing facilities, but quit because I didn't feel a sense of community and the classes started to become quite boring). I had always wanted to try Crossfit, but never wanted to pay the CRAZY amount for it. I started here because I saw a groupon deal (I think it was under $100+ additional groupon promos) so it was a no brainer. In the first month I was there, the instructors knew my name and I had started to become friends with other members so I knew I had to continue on, but what about the price?! The gym did such a great job of promoting inclusion (staff and box goers together) that I didn't want to leave it and was willing to pay a bit more for that and the BEST workout I've ever gotten. Most boxes ONLY focus on the crossfit part which means they have zero cardio - if you've ever ran a Spartan race, you need both crossfit strength and incredible cardio. This one really stresses conditioning and kicks your butt in every class. Even in my fittest days at equinox, I couldn't do a pull up - but 3 months at this gym and I am able to do them! The instructors help you work toward being strong and healthy, not just looking fit. If you are very new to crossfit or just gym-ing in general, don't be scared - there are people of all levels and ages and everyone is there to cheer you on. And if you are very fit, you'll still be sore after any of the classes. read more

Changing my rating to 5 stars because the bathroom sinks have been repaired. I graduated the New You Challenge and joined as a regular member. The difficulty level keeps increasing and I've never been in better shape. I work out at my fullest every single class. Coach Will, who designs all the daily workouts, is the best. You will never get a harder, more fun, more satisfying workout. The spirit of camaraderie and support is amazing. I'm hooked! read more

7 classes in and absolutely love this place. Julia and Nazar are the coaches that I immediately liked and stuck too. They are informed, friendly, and very attentive. And they make sure you get and keep the technique right. Then to add, they have clean, spacious, and individual shower, toilet, lockers facilities to use for free. I find this gym such a gem that I prefer to commute an hour each way from Crown Heights, even though there are a couple of highly rated gyms (and I've tried them) that are walking distance from my home. I found Crossfit Spot through classpass and I have done 2 RX classes so far. I definitely think that RX is a great circuit training workout, and I look forward to coming back 3x a month (classpass' cap on visits to any specific studio). Pros: - Nice showers - they even have hair towels, and their shower products (shampoo, conditioner, and body wash) smell fantastic - New location - Heart rate monitors they give you to wear around your waist during class gives you stats like how much of your max you are working at and the amount of calories burned - Liked the partner segment at the end of the RX classes that helped you have more of a sense of camaraderie - Liked the introductions at the start of class where you find out everyone's name and everyone answers a random icebreaker question of the day Cons: - Only 2 showers - For some, it's location on Amsterdam and 62nd could be a con since it is pretty far west here, but it is actually convenient for me since I live 10 blocks away - Small-ish changing area in the locker room - Only one hairdryer, and it is weak - suggest that they get more hair dryers - at least 2 to match the number of showers they have, and get ones that are more powerful Overall, this is definitely a great place to work out, and I will be coming back to their RX classes (still a little scared to try out their Crossfit classes) read more

This is an incredible CrossFit box with stunning, brand new facilities, incredibly knowledgable and motivational instructors, and a real sense of camaraderie. Oh, and there's a fancy juice bar upstairs. :) I've gone to a few CrossFit classes (better if you've done CrossFit in the past and are familiar with Olympic lifts) and an RX class (really intense cardio/conditioning with medicine balls and the like). One cool thing they do which I've never seen at other gyms is give people heart rate monitors to wear, which project onto the wall -- they're a great way to make sure you're pushing yourself. The studio is on ClassPass which is awesome! The only downside is that the class packages are quite expensive -- still well within the range of normal for New York CrossFit, but more than I could afford on a student budget. Overall, though, if you want to get into CrossFit, this is a great gym to do it at! read more

I found Crossfit Spot on Yelp when I was looking for a box that wasn't super busy, since I wanted to change up my workout routine. I was very happy that I found it! I took the 1 month challenge (I was only looking for a short term thing/I'm happy at Equinox). At first I enjoyed it, since the classes were small (2-6 total) at the times I went. In comparison to Equinox, you get a great work out for a semi-private training class. After the 2nd week, I found that the classes weren't really what I was looking for. They were Metcon/tabata styled classes, and I joined to learn and start doing the olympic lifts/workouts that is known to crossfit. This was pretty much a deal breaker for me, since with 1 month membership, you're only doing the groundwork type of classes. They have these style of classes where I currently go, so it didn't make sense to repeat them when I already have that option as is. I would definitely recommend the one month plan IF you were looking to lose weight and change up your routine. I can definitely see their athletes getting results because the coaches are very personable and push throughout the classes. The facilities are GOREGOUS, very clean, well thought out, and new... they even have showers if you head straight to work. If you're a guy like me, looking to learn some new tricks and lifts, and put on some muscle/not lose weight, I'm not sure if I would recommend it (the 1 month challenge). If you do the full membership, that's when you see the types of workouts you join crossfit for, then yes join. Overall it was a positive experience, and in the perfect world, I would have liked to have a membership here and Equinox, but that was cost a small fortune every month. Dropped in on a Thursday from out of town. Emailed with them prior to coming. They responded quickly and clearly. Coaches were great. I came in hurting a bit from an injury and advised them I couldnt perform a few of the exercises on the board for the day. They were extremely understanding and adjust my workout accordingly. What I really responded to was they treated me like one of their regulars and didn't just ignore me knowing I would be gone in an hour. Mike and Morgan ( the coaches) both critiqued and gave me some great tips on my form for some of the movements! Totally recommend dropping in here! read more

I joined Crossfit SPOT three months ago and there is no looking back! LOVE this spot! I'm a beginner to the sport, but the top quality, technical and patient coaching during the MySPOT intro session with Coach Jessica taught me the basics while giving me the confidence to keep going. Since then, I've taken full advantage of the amazing programs at Crossfit SPOT to build my strength and cardio. The barbell classes are great opportunities to practice weight lifting moments and even if I'm only moving a fraction of my peers, I've always felt welcomed. The RX classes (especially with Coaches Will and Stephany) are high energy circuit-style sweat sessions that keep you moving for a full 60 mins and the only thing it gets you comfortable with is the crossfit terminology as the exercises are intense and fast-changing. To practice the gymnastic movements of crossfit, the body weight classes are ideal. At first they appear to be more low key, but since no weights are required, you are your greatest challenge! The body weight classes encourage agility, build strength and mental commitment. And of course, I'm happy to share that I'm also enjoying regular crossfit classes too! Thanks to the positive energy of coaches Danny and Mike, WODs at 6am are the best start to my days! (Seriously!) CrossfitSPOT is a top notch facility with excellent coaching and a wonderful community atmosphere led by a great owner Coach Billy. I'm so happy that I took a chance to give it a try. Pretty nice gym. I've been 3 times now for drop-ins and have enjoyed the programming, but felt like the coaches really didn't pay much attention to form (today was a lot of heavy snatches, so extra details re: form and technique would have been very useful). I also found a lot cheering (also from coaches) on movement with bad form, both in lifting and in a metcon. Really nice and welcoming one-on-one, but some introduction of the newbie to the rest of the class would have been nice. Also, the drop-in fee is CRAZY $$$. I've been a few times because it's literally around the corner from my family's apartment, but it's wildly expensive and the coaching seems like there's a bit of room for improvement. But again, super nice folks! I'll likely be back again because it's fun programming, but I'm not sure I'd recommend it to people who feel like they could really use a good eye on form. read more

I've officially been a member of Crossfit SPOT for a year now, I just renewed my membership and felt the need to write an update. This place has really changed my life. I've lost a significant amount of weight, pushed myself to my limits and made some really great friends. I feel like I belong to a community and I really couldn't imagine my life without it. Even if crossfit isn't your jam, they have REALLY AMAZING conditioning and HIIT style classes (called RX on the schedule). They will kick your butt and make you feel like a total athlete bad a**. I highly recommend getting yourself to an RX class with Will Arrufat. He's a Nike trainer with a fun teaching style that will challenge and support you. Seriously. You need to take his class. All the trainers are fantastic, so you really can't go wrong. Facilities are beautiful and well maintained - equipment is new and high end, locker rooms are that of a "boutique" studio and there's a coffee/juice bar. Finally, and I really hate to discredit someone else's feelings, but whatever other reviewer said that Will was "uncomfortable" is completely off base. Everyone at this gym is beyond professional and has the credentials to back it up. Also, as a PSA, if you ever feel seriously uncomfortable in that way (at any gym or in life generally) then I don't think YELP is the most appropriate forum to have your concerns addressed or to find a remedy. Always talk to someone in a position of responsibility because that's a serious thing. I find it borderline disgusting that someone would be so flippant as to make accusations like that online. Will can push you to your max, but won't push you past your limits. The workout will be tough, but it will also be doable. This guy has worked at some of the biggest names in the city and (I'll repeat it) is a NIKE TRAINER - he knows what he's doing, his classes fill up with waitlists. Form your own opinions on that one. If you're ready to find a family and change your body this place is your home. read more

After seeing such great reviews on yelp, I signed up for 2 Crossfit classes through classpass and yesterday was first one. I was excited to find another crossfit gym that was also offering their crossfit class on classpass even though this is a trek. Once I arrived to check-in, I was immediately grilled on whether I've done crossfit before, how many times I've done, how much can I lift, do I know what's a clean and jerk or push press. Albeit I'm no pro and I'm a novice at best who's looking to improve but needless to say after being interrogated I felt extremely unwelcomed. Only after saying I'm just going to leave, did his attitude change and allowed me to take the class. While attending the class everyone was nice and encouraging exactly what I would have expected crossfit class. The WOD was Angie, since my pull ups and kipping is my weakest the couch was attentive in assisting in improving my kipping swing. The facilities is clean and well maintained. The equipment are new and adequate. Overall the class experience was good, but what really left a bad taste in my mouth was how I was interrogated to a point where I felt unwelcomed and had to leave what made it worse was that I was making this trek on one if the hottest days so far to get to that location. Needless to say, I have since cancelled the second class. If their intentions are to have pros in their crossfit class then they shouldn't offer it at all on classpass. Since they are offering it, then they should be more welcoming to those who are novice's looking to improve in getting better and stronger. read more

I've been working out here for about 4 months - I've been a member of the black box, and tried out and visited a bunch of other gyms in the area. This is the best gym in nyc. My cleans and snatches have gotten way better because of the coaching, both in the crossfit classes and the barbell club. Everyone is super friendly and the coaches do a good job pushing you hard but with safety and proper form in mind. The facilities are also phenomenal. built in olympic lifting platforms, top notch eleiko barbells and plates. It doesn't get better than that. I was going to be in town for work for a couple weeks and needed to find a gym. I came across CrossFit Spot on Yelp, and since it was so close to my hotel, it was perfect! The entire staff was wonderful to work with from my very first email correspondence with Billy, to my very last class with Danny. The facilities and equipment were clean and organized. The price was incredible at $99 unlimited for a month. And as if all of that wasn't enough, being able to be coached by some of the Fittest Women in America was an awesome experience. This place is fantastic! The equipment is top notch and the instructors are very patient and helpful. They do a great job motivating you to stay engaged in the class. I also like that they have class options for RX and Body Weight Mastery that are beyond the scope of traditional Crossfit-only gyms. I took the month-long Crossfit Spot intro course and really enjoyed it. They spent a lot of time teaching proper technique and form to avoid injury so that once you're ready to move on to the traditional Crossfit workouts, you're confident and comfortable lifting. While fitness has always been a large part of my life--I had always been skeptical about CrossFit (even though many of my friends and family members have raved about it for years). To be honest, my image of it had been skewed by the words I often heard associated with CrossFit in general: "Olympic weightlifting, paleo, cult"- an image that just seemed to drastic. I was also worried about the possibility of injury. However, my experience at SPOT immediately shattered all these stereotypes immediately. By chance, I ended up meeting Billy and the rest of the staff, who immediately put me at ease and made me feel welcome. After one class, I was hooked. For the person who doesn't think intensive weight training is for him/her, SPOT offers RX classes which are a mixture of full body aerobic, resistance and endurance training. Each coach I encountered has been incredibly passionate and motivating in a way that makes you look forward to class each day. In terms of results, I have seen my body change in the last few months. I've built muscle and feel leaner and stronger. As a distance runner, I find that the workouts at SPOT have still maintained my capacity for aerobic activity, if not improved it further. In terms of the facilities, SPOT is always impeccable, from the workout spaces to the organization of the workout equipment and right down to the pristinely maintained bathrooms. In short, as a New Yorker, I have tried various fitness programs, including the major cycling studios and "bootcamp" facilities. None of these come close to my experience at SPOT, and I would encourage and recommend anyone (of ANY fitness level) to give it a shot--even the former CrossFit skeptic like myself. read more

Great place, the staff are very friendly and professional, they create a perfect environment for athletes to give their best, work together and make progress, and also to make friends. You always feel looked after, the progress is monitored and there is great attention to safety. Only opened about a month ago, so plenty of space in the classes. Only dropped in, but have seen a lot of gyms/boxes and this one is awesome! They have a lot of different class options, upstairs is the conditioning classes called "RX", which are great if you are into cardio/strength building. Downstairs is the crossfit which is similar but also incorporates weightlifting and more sophisticated stuff... they also have mobility/yoga and other classes and fun special events. try it out, it's totally worth taking a chance!! I am not a costumer at the place. But by knowing how the owner treated me, you can have a idea how you will be treated.(You can also look at the other review to get a feeling) I was walking on the sidewalk a couple of days ago outside the business, and a group of trainees at the facility were running back and forth on the sidewalk(yes, they do this outside on the sidewalk, and they do it all the time). No surprise, one of them hit me, badly. Not even saying sorry, the trainee run away. I was fine at that time, but my phone dropped on the ground and the glass was broken. While I was checking my phone, the trainee is on her way back to the business and ran pass me again. I tried to stop her, and she just ignored me, went back to the business. I have no other option but to get in the store to ask for my justices. The business owner answered me, in a very demeaning way. I asked for the replacement of my phone glass. The owner offered to meet me half way. Being a very reasonable and generally nice person, I didn't argue and agreed. I got my phone glass repaired today, it cost me 140 dollars. And I went back to the store to ask for half of the money he promised. You know what he said? He asks me to be a trainee at his facility for two weeks! Of course I said no. Then he refused to pay me what he promised. What a credible business it is! And remember, how demeaning the guy talks. I got furious and left after some argument. You know what happened next? The owner run out of the store, and hit me again! from the back! And it is a downhill! I could have been seriously injured! And this is how the business owner treats people. Be aware !! read more

I discovered CrossFit Spot when I signed up to be a member of the New You Challenge the box was hosting. I interviewed with the owner Billy De La Rosa and was immediately impressed with the facility and with Billy. Yes, this is a business; however, Billy genuinely wants his members to succeed. I was super impressed that he remembered most if not all of our names and has attempted to develop personal relationship with dozens of new members. The facility is impeccably clean and well equipped. The trainers are very well qualified, encouraging and personable (Stephanie, Jessica, Will, etc.). Front desk staff is always helpful. Did I mention that one of the fittest woman on Earth (Kari Pearce) trains here! CrossFit can be intimidating to many particularly those who are new to the experience.
