Both companies work with ultra-high end real estate, and have designers on hand to attractively style the home with furnishings. I was particularly partial to Phoenix because of Hannah. While the prices of both companies were comparable, the contractual terms were less favorable with Phoenix; however, I really liked Hannah. She has an art background, and does design for a living. She was impressed by the art in my unit, and knew a good deal about quite a number of them (impressive!). I had to commit to 5months of rent for Phoenix's furniture, at about $2200/month, even knowing my unit would sell in a month or so. 2 of the 3 bedrooms were staged, along with the public rooms. The alternative high-end staging company had a one month commitment of $5K, with each subsequent month being prorated by day (@ $2K/month). This alternative company didn't have Hannah, though, and her design eye. I took the bite and committed to Phoenix knowing my gorgeous unit would sell in a month (it did!), and I am glad I did. Thank you Phoenix Rising, and Hannah!

That, along with a few other cautions, set our expectations before starting our project with Kitchen & Baths Unlimited. For my wife and me, however, the experience turned out very differently. We cannot say enough great things about Nancy (design), Owen (project management) and the entire team that meticulously executed the remodel. While I work from home and my wife commutes downtown, we decided to move forward with gutting and remodeling the vintage kitchen in our 100-year-old farmhouse in Evanston--and we couldn't be more pleased with the outcome. Yes, the demolition phase was a bit loud, as expected. But after that, the usual construction noise--hammering and drilling--was manageable. The team did an excellent job minimizing disruption: adjacent rooms were carefully sealed to contain dust, wood floors were protected with panels, and window treatments were wrapped in plastic. Design selections were also made easy thanks to Nancy, who guided us through choosing colors, cabinets, and countertops that matched our vision. The result is a beautiful transformation from a neglected, dingy farmhouse kitchen into a bright, modern farmhouse space. The Italian tile backsplash complements the quartz countertops with subtle veining. The lower cabinets are a soft gray, while the upper cabinets are white, creating a clean and balanced look. We also upgraded our appliances and fixtures, including LED ceiling lights, a Bosch microwave drawer, a professional KitchenAid range with a matching hood featuring an infrared sensor, and a modern stainless-steel farmhouse sink with a gentle bow. Despite an initial delay with the permit office due to a previously applied for permit that KBU helped us manage, the project stayed on schedule. We made a few minor upgrades along the way, but thanks to Owen and Nancy's guidance, we remained on time and within our overall budget. The KBU crew was professional, punctual, and highly skilled. Communication was seamless--especially since I was working from home--which helped address questions quickly and keep the project moving efficiently. In the end, we passed all inspections and received written approval from the village within a day. For us, this remodel was a great success. I worked with Julie (designer), her team led by Jesus, and of course, owner Owen. Julie came up with ideas I hadn't even thought of and was able to convert an old, smaller space, into something that felt luxurious. Jesus and his team were super hard workers, pleasant to deal with, trustworthy, and highly efficient and knowledgeable. Everything was overseen frequently by Owen. I was blown away with the gorgeous result and the seemlessness with which this project was completed! I highly recommend KBU to everyone!

We had wanted our dining room, living room, and two-story stairwell painted to match the rest of…read moreour lower level. This project included painting some slatted sliding doors, which house our furnace and hot water heater. We also wanted to get 4-inch plantation shutters installed on all of our downstairs windows and in our master bedroom. We also had a few miscellaneous things that the owner said they could help with, including fixing some molding that our previous floor/door installers had left off/too short. The work was scheduled quickly. The painters were so friendly and nice. My elderly dog got sick and they called me at work and let him outside to go potty. The were pretty good with what they painted, but I soon noticed after they left that there was paint splattered on random things--fine sprays of paint on the side of a cabinet, drips on my winter coat hanging in the laundry room, the floors, hardware of the slatted doors, drips between the slats, etc. The molding they had made to fix a previous contractor's boo-boo not only looked awkward, it also wasn't painted. I wish I had said it looked bad at the time he'd shown me before install, but I wasn't really sure how it was going to look after he'd put it in. I'm fairly sure the owner said they'd fix the other door with the same molding issue, but because it wasn't specified on their invoice, I didn't bother to say anything because after all, I wasn't happy with the other one. The shutter installer came a few weeks after the painters once the product arrived. He told me he realized only had received product for one window and the other product needed to be tracked down. Within a few days, it was found and we scheduled another installation date. He came and installed the rest. My husband was home and working and didn't realize that the dining room was missing the split at the 42" mark so we let in light without losing privacy. They came back out again to quickly adjust the shutters. Ewald Interiors came recommended on Facebook to us. Pricing was reasonable based on other quotes we'd received. The house looks better. I love my shutters. I've cleaned up the paint I can. I continue to hate the molding. Would anyone else really notice? Probably not. Would I use Ewald Interiors again? Also, probably not.

They were exactly what I needed. Spoke with the office manager who was able to set up an appointment in a short time. Tom Ewald came to the house, and discussed what I had in mind. He made suggestions based on my style of decorating and the age of my home. The selection of samples was wonderful and I found one I liked. He also suggested a shutter for one window to provide more privacy, and measured everything precisely suggesting the hardware that would blend nicely with the metal already in use. The order arrived in a timely manner and everything was installed before Christmas. The quality is excellent, the installer was a perfectionist and did not leave one spec of dust, and I am so happy with my purchase. I splurged a little, but they had selections for many price ranges.
