I like seeing someone go for the throat, even if it's doomed for failure. But then again, they are the Worldwide Leader, so they have muscle to make a go of it, and they are not exactly the underdog here. 890's main draw is also its chief liability - syndicated, national broadcasts. Mike and Mike and Dan Patrick (well, at least until August 17th) far outshine their EEI competition during the morning and midday in both the class and content department, though their coverage is necessarily more generalist and national than the hermetically sealed, incestuously provincial homerism of EEI. Both these shows make for better listening, but probably can't pull in the ya-dood yahoos that are sports radio's main bread and butter. Local programs (or program, really) suffer severely. Mike Felger - a refugee from EEI's carnivalesque afternoon shouting match hosted by the Big O - simply lacks the panache to hold listeners attention, is disagreeable and abrasive without being genuinely hateable, a la JT the Brick. The only ace up his sleeve is a regular spot by Peter Gammons on Thursdays - but why go here when I can see him regularly on ESPN TV. A negligible one hour Red Sox pregrame show runs between 6-7, and during the football season, Troy Brown hosts a weekly one hour stint which is agreeably listenable, but only because Brown is so agreeable himself. Though probably not destined to sink into obscurity any time soon, a la the Zone 1510 AM, I can't see ESPN making any real dents as long as they stay in the same neighborhood as their unassailable rival.

Instead of letting students take the lead, they hire a few cringeworthy amateurs like their insuffurable afternoon drive announcer and a host of their weekend Coffeehouse acoustic show who brings in the same six albums in her collection every week and plays the same one song from each. Last Saturday, I counted more than half a dozen songs which are played virtually every week. The careers of two of her favorites--Joanna Newsom and Broken Social Scene--hopefully be cut short by the international shortage of helium. They sound like Alvin and the Chipmunk tribute bands. Musical tastes are subjective but if the announcers don't know anything about the music, they should educate themselves. That's what college is supposedly about. The host of The Coffeehouse talks more about coffee than music. (Her conversation mirrors her musical choices--every comment on repeat). WERS might be able to cut back on their now incessant fundraising drives if they diverted some of the money they spend on MBTA advertising back into the station and if their management would more responsive to their students and their listeners.

My son has a disorder and is on an IEP; school has always been challenging for him, and at times, his guitar lessons had to take a back seat so he could focus on his academic needs. This summer, he was required to attend summer school due to those challenges. We communicated this to Zumix and asked if he could take a temporary break from lessons. The response we received from Jennifer was disheartening: "We've had to offer your lesson time to one of the many students currently on our waitlist who are eager and ready to jump in." While I understand there is high demand, this response lacked any compassion or effort to find a solution. It sent a clear message: that my child, who has already faced so many obstacles, is easily replaceable. Instead of feeling like part of a community, we felt discarded. There was no flexibility, no outreach, and no sense that they cared about my child's journey or well-being. If your child has a disability or needs some grace and understanding, I would strongly urge you to proceed with caution. This experience was a painful reminder that not all youth organizations are equipped--or willing--to support children with unique needs.

DJs are great but Jessica is phenomenal. If you follow her Instagram, she covers Boston sports local places to go to among other things also every summer she hosts a local artist night at Sylvan St., Grill. It is the highlight of my summer. She is such a great person with a great personality in a genuine heart. She makes listening to the radio, even more enjoyable. And I love how she plays all genres of country from Luke Bryan to Blake Shelton to my all-time favorite Morgan Wallen and Jelly Roll and we can't forget about tedy swims in Lainey Wilson.
