"Cam" and his feathered friend "Rio" who was happily sitting on Cams shoulder:) were beyond helpful! I had so so many questions about 2 recently rescued reptiles and Cam was absolutely AMAZING! He wasn't just a salesman trying to sell me a ton of stuff I didnt need, he was knowledgeable and personable and "Rio" made the interaction even better! The store was clean and I purchased moss to assist with humidity at a price that was comparable to online prices. THANK YOU so very much for your time and just being sweet! I am... very disappointed with my interactions so far. I'm writing this on Sunday the 29th, two days after the purchase. I wanted to collect my thoughts and write the review with a level head and not from outright anger.. I'm out with a friend and I decided to go pick up some rats after lunch. Feeling a little more adventurous I decided to try this store. They were nice while I was there, though they initially thought I was buying feeders to feed a snake when I said I wanted two large/Jumbo rats and then one of them asked me how big my snake was. I politely corrected them and stated I was looking to take some home as pets. Now. There were tanks labelled "Rat pups" "Small" "Medium" and "Jumbo." I also got from the question the store associate asked me about the snake that the place primarily sold them as food, which is normal.. He asks if I want a few of the pups and I decline. I have cerebral palsy where one of my arms and hands doesn't work well but am still quite mobile. I don't say this to him obviously since this is more for the review. I picked out two small rats, one silver (a mixture of brown and silver) and a hooded rat (white with brown "hood" on head and snout as I know it's better when rats are in pairs or more for socialization. Both were picked from the same tank they had for the smaller ones, probably from the same feeder batch. Anyway, I went to checkout after picking up a new cage and some food for them. It was around 2:47pm. My place is in the Southwest section of Roanoke, in the Cave Spring area, so my friend and I try to make the ride back as smooth as possible. We got back to my place around 3:10pm. He helps me set up the cage and I put food, water and some bedding in. I am getting a bigger cage I bought online this evening. At 3:20pm or so, I go and put both rats in the cage. I start with the silver one, who I named Leva, into the cage. I then went to reach for the hooded, who I named Leena, and noticed something odd... Back to Leena-as I was putting her in, I noticed she wasn't as skittish as Leva, something kind of off. Normally rats are very skittish when first brought home due to environment change and fear. When I put her in the cage entrance, I noticed she was also kind of cold to the touch, which is abnormal because rats do radiate some heat. She wobbled in and went for the food before going over to the little hut that was part of the cage to huddle with Leva. I leave the rats alone since I have learned to leave the rats alone for a few days and just replace food, bedding, and water. I go for an hour to catch up on a TV show I've been meaning to watch. Around 5:30pm, I went to check on the two and noticed Leena was on the bottom floor of the cage, stretched out in a way that is usually when the rats are really comfortable with their environment... or in the process of dying. I gently went and scooped her when I noticed she was lethargic and involuntarily twitching, usually something that happens when they are dying. Again, she was very cold to the touch. I took her back with me to my desk and gently laid her on something soft. I coo and pet her, knowing she was about to go still was painful knowing a rat was dying right after I brought that home. In fact, this was the first time that it ever happened. I do the next best thing and go to call the store. And this is where it gets really suspect. Leena passed at 5:45pm and I called them at 5:50pm. As soon as I get an answer, I tell the associate my story. Now. When I'm stressed I tend to mumble my words due to my palsy. After I was finished, he took me saying she died five minutes before I called them as I just got home five minutes ago, which was not what I said at that exact moment. I then asked as I could get a new rat as compensation for the one dying and he went to ask the manager. I do not know what was said to the manager but the associate came back and told me he needed "proof. I begrudgingly took it, even showing the receipt. I'm quite appalled they thought I mishandled animals that I've had many years experience with and this was my absolute worst experience of purchasing rats as pets read more

The staff have been really helpful for my aquariums and terrariums! If you need a product, they'll get it in or tell you where you can find it. Every fish I've ever bought has been super healthy, and their reptile feeder bugs selection is so helpful for my picky eaters! I dont care if a place looks like a five-star resort.. Tried to return a fish that didn't make it through the first night the very next day. I understand a policy of "no returns on live animals" however the fish was obviously not alive when I tried to exchange it. That's all I wanted was an exchange for a fish I paid $4.99 the day before. The girl at the register (with a bird on her head) was rude and just kept pointing to the sign while I pleaded my case that the fish was clearly sick when I bought it. Just a fair warning as every pet in the store is highly marked up so you could potentially buy a sick $100+ animal that doesn't survive one night and you're just out that money. Pet smart not only has a 14 day return policy but they test the fish and a sample of your tank water to determine cause of death.. to piggy back off of that when I brought the dead fish to Pet Smart it turns out the "Threadfin Rainbow" fish was in fact just a highly overpriced guppy after all. I also want to point out that the other four fish (guppys) I bought prior to the one that died are still alive and well. read more

Buyer beware! I contacted this business because my children had found a nest of five newborn mice. In the past I'd been able to purchase a mother mouse who had just finished nursing and she had adopted the orphans. I was told that they did indeed have a female who had just weaned a litter. And she was available for purchase. I came to the shop and made several purchases other than the mouse. When I arrived home the mouse was dead. In rigor. She must have been dieing when the employee boxed her. I immediately called and was told to bring the dead mouse back with my receipt and she would be replaced. Great! I did what I was told. When we got to the store no one knew what we were talking about. No, they didn't have any other nursing females. No, they wouldn't refund the price of the dead mouse. No, they didn't have a Sam (who I spoke to after the mouse died ) or a Cory (who had promised the refund) working there. We ended up leaving the orphans with them as I had seen for myself that they had an established breeding colony with at least four other mothers. I have no way of knowing what they did with the orphans as when I called the next day no one knew anything about the situation. Apparently, there is no management. No one tells anyone else anything and there are no established protocols for handling customer concerns. I did not receive the promised replacement or the promised refund. I would not buy animals from them and their other goods are somewhat overpriced. read more

If I could give 0 stars I would. 1.) They don't look after the animals. They sold me a bearded dragon and he was sick. He is severely underweight. I've had Derpy the dragon since the 31st of May. He had an injury while he was in the care of this store. His left arm is swollen, and he has a lump on his tummy. When the injury was found I took him in and showed them. I was grateful for their help. I came in today to possibly talk about them helping with the surgery he needs for his arm. The woman working today was so rude and inconsiderate. She said "we can replace him thats all we can do" Derp is my child.. he's apart of my crazy family. There is no replacing him. Honestly if yall actually paid attention to the animals you would have seen it. By far the worst experience I've had when it comes to a sick animal. They have feelings and that lady just made it seem like derp didn't matter. She didn't care. Do not shop here. This company used to have good vibes and i wish it would be like how it used too. Small little pet shop in Roanoke that has birds, lizards and fish along with supplies. Wasn't too impressed with their selection of marine life but the staff seemed eager to help and knowledgeable. Prices are quite reasonable as well. If you need to pick up supplies for your fresh or saltwater aquarium, I recommend coming here for a better value. read more

Cool store and friendly people, but some real problems at this shop. They do backyard ponds and the moving company that broke ours hired these guys to fix it. Daniel is their guy who does projects like this and he claims to be a real pro but he turned out to not know what the heck he was doing. They told us they guaranteed their work and if they didn't fix it the first time, they'd come back out and fix it etc. Well each time they came, they assured us it was fixed and then a day or two later we would find a leak. 7 times over 7 weeks they did this and each time was the same result and the same excuses. They also ripped the brand-new liner in several places while moving rocks around on it and refused to patch or replace it. After 7 times, they simply stopped coming out and Daniel stopped returning my calls. Had to call the store and he refused to get on the phone to explain himself. Instead he had his assistant explain that too much time had passed and if there was a problem now, they couldn't be responsible. This, in spite of all their promises. It was evident that this project was above their heads and they had too much pride to admit it. Full of excuses and full of themselves. If you can't fix the problem after 7 times then how do you even call yourself a pro? And then turn on the customer who showed absurd amounts of patience until the end. Shameful. After they refused to fix it, I, who have no experience at all with this type of thing and am no handy man, sealed and fixed it. It's now the next season and still no leaking. Well during our visit there my first impression was they were a bit overpriced. However, the employees were nice and seemed knowledgeable. It was my daughters birthday and she chose two hairless rats for her birthday gift. One was active and one was quiet. This was late Monday night. By Tuesday night the quiet mouse was lethargic. I called the store and was told sometimes rats scuffle and that one probably just got hurt a little but "good luck". Well come Wednesday morning, our quiet rat was dead and my daughter was devastated. We boxed him up and my husband went with her to return him to the store. Considering the amount of money spent $18.99 for each, and the small amount of time we had him, I assured her maybe she could get a refund or a replacement since the employees told her they do better in pairs. They were told no refund and no exchange at the store. They told my husband I signed a waiver stating this...I did not. I signed nothing. In fact I had walked out of the store to handle my loud younger child. So the only person who could've signed was my 15-year old. All I can say is buyer beware at this place. I can't believe they don't have a health guarantee for at least the two days we had him!! Absolutely ridiculous. The animals there are expensive and I will never purchase anything there again if they don't guarantee health even for a short amount of time! My advice would be if you're making a significant purchase, bring a vet with you to check him out before you buy him!! Shame on this place. read more

Bought some tiger barbs from here, not my first set of fish mind you, and took them home. After acclimating them, they were fine. Unfortunately the next day they were all dead. I contacted the store, which assured me a store credit was possible when I bought them in the event this exact thing happened, but the employees were pretty nasty with me on the phone. I cannot recommend this store. I've had much better luck with chain stores like Petsmart. read more

The animals are super healthy and friendly, the staff are super informed and it's easy to ask them questions, their pet food is always top quality, and they do great deals on things like oxbow so you're always buying the best food possible at the lowest price in roanoke. Outstanding experience today! They are always very knowledgeable and friendly. I entered feeling intimidated and unsure about what I am trying to do with my first aquarium and left feeling so confident and informed that I feel like I can do anything!
