This review is long overdue: I had Expert Fence remove an old chain link fence and install a privacy fence on our small urban lot back in 2016. At the time there was a tree in the fence line and Expert Fence expertly installed a fence right up to the contours of the tree (with a little room to spare). But when in 2017 that tree came down, I had Expert Fence come back, remove the existing panels (for grinding the tree stump), and install a new post and panels to match the rest of the fence. Finally, just this week in 2019, when a gate post warped so much that the gate slammed shut and the mechanism wouldn't latch, I had Expert Fence come and put things back in order. So, to be clear, I've had several experiences with Expert Fence. Each and every experience with Expert Fence has been great. On the original install I asked for cedar boards and stainless steel nails, which they delivered on, and I don't have any streaking on my fence. I also had a 16 foot wide car gate installed: Jose engineered a structure using steel 6x6 posts, steel frames, and a header to keep the gates from sagging, and to this day they are working perfectly. I've had several neighbors ask who did my fence and I proudly display the Expert Fence sign. For followup needs, it's easy to get a hold of the office, schedule a visit, and have the work done. Their team is great and clearly know what they're doing. The craftsmanship is top notch and I recommend the company to everyone with fence needs. I see no reason to look for another company: call Expert Fence. read more

I don't know what happened it it seems like this company has gone downhill recently. They installed a six foot high stockade fence for me 10 years ago and did a decent job. Two years ago I asked that they replace two post - at my expense of course - and they did except the post are 4" shorter than all the others. I've called them back about replacing some panels and they never call back. read more

The best fence company in Northern Virginia. Had a front and backyard fence put in by them and the process was so easy. I wish I had a choice of minus stars, from beginning to end the decision to go with this company was a mistake. I had a promise of work to start 10 to 15 days after they received the signed contract and my deposit. More than a month later I am calling them asking when they are going to start. I asked the sales guy for the same fence I had, but six foot. A picket with a dip, not hard. The guys showed up with a Gothic style picket. After that was resolved, it was one thing after another. The chief installer called me out one day and told me that he didn't know why the sales guy sold me the gating system he did since it would not work and it was a bad design. I changed it at his recommendation. After the recommended solution proved to not work, the sales person blamed me for changing what he proposed. Little did he know his own guy would backed me and my decision to change the gating system to what he recommended. After that the sales guy pulled the guys from the job that day because of rain in Richmond and no work was done (it was a beautiful sunny day that day). Now keep in mind, they are more than triple late on starting the job, the two day job is now on day three and they are not close to completion and we have all of these problems. This sales guy shows up, just to pull the guys off. They don't need any one's money if they have that disregard for service. The crew also took an hour and a half to two hour lunch everyday sprawled out on my front lawn. My husband had to ask them to please work when their break was approaching the second hour. They began installing the fence 4 to 6 inches above the ground. Please see the picture. This is my fourth fence that I have had put up in Northern Virginia at different properties, I used Long Fence on the other three and made the mistake of not using them on number 4. Save yourself the agony and choose anyone else for your fence. Our fence looks cheap, doesn't run with the land, and the back gating system had to be fixed too. They may be experts at something, but not fences and customer service. Oh yeah, and for a 3% fee on the total fence they will take your credit card. Seriously. read more

We needed to completely fence a very large Silver Spring yard in 2009. Expert gave us a quick estimate and a crew came a week later. Not cheap, but competitive. 2 years later as we get ready to sell the house we noticed a few issues. 4 or 5 really warped or denailed pales and one of the cedar gates that wouldn't close anymore. They're warranty is typically not this long but the new owner agreed to send someone out when they were in the area. As promised, they stopped by and fixed the issues. So, good product, on-time and price delivery and, in the end, great customer service. read more

I was just threatened by the owner of Expert Fence because I deducted a small amount from my invoice for work they didn't do and I had to pay others to do. He said it was my responsibility to make sure they did what they were supposed to do, as opposed to the estimator communicating to the men who did the work, which boards to replace in my fence. I was disappointed initially when my painter told me there were still rotten boards, but now I am furious. read more

I signed a contract on 8/2/21 to install a metal fence around our front yard in 3 months. In early November, I telephoned the office and was told that the materials had not yet arrived and that it would be another 2 months before the fence would be installed. In early January 2022, I telephoned the office again and arrangements were made to install the fence on January 12. The 4-man crew arrived about 7:30 a.m. and finished about 5 p.m. During the course of their work, the laborers cut 2 underground private electric lines. The foreman admitted that they had cut the lines accidently. They also left mud all over the driveway and sidewalks which I hosed down with water to wash the mud away after they left. I telephoned the office and said that I would not pay the balance due until the severed electric lines were fixed. The secretary pointed out to me that the estimate which I signed specifically stated: "Expert Fence shall not be liable for private underground utilities." So, we agreed to pay the balance due and we will not hire the company again when we replace the back yard fence. My warning to readers of this post is to be sure to read the very fine print! read more

We had a 4th of July incident where our fence was damaged, and he came out the same week to replace the piece at no cost to us. I recently used Expert Fence to replace my old fence. After making NUMEROUS calls to other fence companies, Expert was the only one to return my calls. The estimator came to my house two days after my first call to view my property and he gave me a written proposal ON SITE!!! I would absolutely refer anyone to Expert Fence. The crew arrived on time, they finished the job within the proposed time line, and left me with a gorgeous fence to boot! The people in the office were great, very friendly and knowledgeable. I first called Expert Fence on August 7th to request an estimate on replacing my 32 year old dilapidated fence. I was told that someone would be buy on August 13 @ 11 AM and the it was not necessary for me to be on-site. I don't know if anyone ever showed up but I followed up 3 times to ask when I can expect to receive my estimate and all 3 times I was promised that Jose was working on it and I should have it shortly. It is now August 21st and I get it... They're not interested. But I'm sure that if I had told them that me and 6 of my neighbors were looking to replace our fences they probably would have at least given me the courtesy of a call back or perhaps even a reasonable estimate. Based on reviews like the one above, I also had a Cedar fence built by "Expert Fence" even though I had lower prices quoted by other companies. The gate latches were installed wrong, and they had to come back to fix them. Within 3 months, several pickets had rotted out, and they had to come back. Now, within 7 months, THE FENCE IS FALLING DOWN (they seem to have just tapped loose dirt around the posts and expected it to stand up). Since my "warranty" has expired (it seems that they only warranty their work for 30 days), they now want even more money to come back and make their fence stand up! Terrible company. Shoddy workmanship. I will NEVER do business with them again, and recommend that you don't either. read more

I do most work around the house myself and I am particular about attention to detail and craftsmanship--for which I am willing to pay. I am often disappointed that I pay craftsmanship prices for amateur work. This was NOT the case with Expert Fence. They recently installed a cedar fence with gates and arbors for me. I was very particular and even took the time to provide a detailed line drawing of what I wanted. The workers paid particular attention to angles and fit which resulted in an extremely tight and neat finish to the work. We worked with Chris to have a cedar fence installed out front about a year ago. The whole process was easy, reasonably priced and our fence is beautiful! About one year later we had a picket that broke (not sure how, likely during one of the snowstorms) I contacted Chris and he came by and replaced the picket, no charge. Kris was imaginative in helping us think through how to reposition the back gate into the garden from the alley and he was very accessible and responsive when we had follow-up calls. Sammy was a star, as we are sure you know. He was steady and very consultative. He checked in with me a number of times when there were choices to make. The whole crew was very careful to avoid stepping on the plants in the garden, which required being considerate and attentive. It was a pleasure to work with this company. We will, of course, recommend them to our friends. And we greatly appreciate that the staff are employees, not hourly laborers, and have been with the company for a number of years. read more

We just had a really great experience with Expert Fence. Their salesman, Kris Pedersen, was very responsive, knowledgeable and had helpful ideas for how to make the fence design really classy for our yard. Installation was quick and we were very pleased with the quality of the crew and their workmanship. They also cleaned up nicely. We live on a cul-de-sac so in close quarters with 6 other neighbors, and I saw first-hand how careful they were with everyone's shrubs, beds and in-ground sprinkler lines. I too (like Robyn M) wish I could choose a minus star rating. This organization took over $14K to erecting our fence it is a nice fence BUT they chose not to follow the plot lines they were given and they got it wrong. When we asked them to fix what they messed up they want to charge us another $1,200 to correct their mistake. We got another quote for $500... interesting, no? Clearly a no brainer we won't go with "Expert" again, complete lack of expertise and goodwill, embarrassing actually. read more
