After our initial meeting where we verbally agreed on the garden wall shape, size, requirements, and design, I received a very general, non-specifically worded contract. I was told the garden wall would be constructed two-weeks after I provided my deposit. Six weeks later I received a email stating they would start the next day. The built a nice garden wall. I did a lot of research on several landscaping companies to install my paver patio and decided to go with Stoneman Landscaping. I'm glad I did! I looked over some Techno Bloc brochures and told Alberto the vision of what I wanted. Be very careful that you review your county's rules and regulations for permitting! I requested an estimate from the company and they sent an estimator to talk through the work with me. I provided all the details and asked for a couple of simple options to deal with concrete and backfill options. During this process, the estimator let me know that they "don't do permits", which seems like a fairly alarming thing to hear when you're considering a contractor. When I received the estimate it contained only about 60% of the requested work, didn't include any permitting explanation for the options I requested (remove & replace vs remove and soil/sod/etc). In requesting a more detailed estimate and clarification on the permit situation with the company, I was told that it is "not how we do it" and that they would decline the project. In summary, be very careful if you choose to go with this company as your work may not be permitted by the municipal authorities, and if you call them out on this they may decline to consider working with you at all. read more

Alberto and his team are great, and we are so thrilled with how the space was transformed from a choppy backyard with a deck that was falling apart with an ugly concrete pad to one big open space where we can host family and friends, and not worry about our young kids playing there. He worked with us on our color and materials preferences and had great solutions when some unexpected complications arose over the course of the project, like fixing damaged brick from the deck that was against the wall and not appropriately waterproofed, and figuring out some transition connection pieces. We could not be happier with the job Stoneman Construction and Landscaping did for us and would highly recommend them to anyone looking to install a patio, retaining wall, brick walkways, or brick stairs. Let us start by saying that we are very particular people and we are SO pleased with the work Stoneman has done for us. And to make it even more exciting, we did not know exactly what we wanted when requesting for quotes. In general, we wanted brick walkways connecting our front door to the sidewalk and to our driveway, a planter box in our front yard, and a patio in our side and back yards. But as far as design - we were at a loss. Alberto, Evelyn, and their team took our limited knowledge and easily filled in the gaps. The mid-range of three quotes we got, Stoneman's Alberto and Evelyn put us immediately at ease. He had a catalogue handy for us to see the types of pavers he recommended. As we did more research, we sent photos of a herringbone brick pattern for the walkways, patio/retaining wall styles, and timber boxes to finalize our contract. Evelyn always responded very quickly to our emails. Alberto gave us plenty of notice that we would need to wait about a month or so to get started. When it was time to begin construction, Alberto showed up with our photos in hand, and the Stoneman team was efficient and professional. It was a huge project with lots of moving pieces and they finished 95% of it in 5 days. At one point we didn't love the width of a step and asked for it to be widened. The widened step was done within a couple of hours and looks perfect. We had a few punch list items for them to come back and take care of, which they did timely with no need for followup. After we'd done the final walkthrough, told them how much we'd love it, and paid the final installment, we noticed a small gap after some dirt had settled. Alberto came back himself to make it right. Simply put, Stoneman delivered above and beyond what we expected. Alberto and his team patiently worked with our requests within reason. We contacted Stoneman back in late February/early March to estimates on a new patio. At the time we got three different estimates but we appreciated Alberto's straightforwardness and the company's reviews were great. Then of course COVID hit and we ended up delaying our project a few months. After we went under contract, the work started some weeks after and was finished within budget and the estimated timeline even with some rainy days. The gentleman always arrived around the same time, worked hard and left the same time. Yay! i found photos of the work Alberto and the subcontractors did! The patio is HUGE! One end has a long banquet for seating and the other end is a retaining wall tucked neatly under the deck, blocking the view of the ugly underside of the deck. The sides are slightly raised where need be to prevent erosion from spilling mud onto the patio when it rains. The stone work was superb... and earthquake is not going to move these stones. The deck was also enormous -- maybe slightly bigger than the original. SOLID work. We hung curtains to offer privacy in the hot tub and protect from the sun when dining outside. The patio was used for sunning/napping/reading in lounge chairs and night time fires and family chats. We never enjoyed our outdoor space before the improvements Alberto made. I am building a house far from DC, otherwise i would definitely hire Stoneman again to build my outdoor space for family enjoyment and entertainment. read more

Outstanding work. We recently (as in this Monday)got the grass removed from our front yard and got it paved with Belgard pavers. We shopped around quite a bit for a reasonable quote and Alberto's quote was very good. Since the reviews on yelp were good I was pretty optimistic, but they went above and beyond our expectations. The communication with Evelyn prior to the job starting was easy and courteous. She worked with me on accommodating our timeline and Old Town parking issues. Stoneman replaced a flagstone walkway from my driveway to my front door, including the portico. Their pre-job quote was competitive with Merrifield Garden Center, who had built the walkway about 15 years ago. Since I was getting slow response from Merrifield, I went with Stoneman. Despite some miscommunication about how long it would take to complete, I was completely satisfied with their work. I understood it would take them 2-3 days and approved their starting on a Monday, knowing I would be going out of town for 3 weeks that Wednesday. Part of the problem may have been that the project turned out to be more difficult than expected, since the underlaying concrete base, which they hoped to reuse, had to be jackhammered out. The job took them 6 days to complete. They honored the agreed upon price, though, without complaint to me. The weather was really hot that week and their guys really worked hard. I set up a canopy for them in the front yard for some shade and a cooler with Ice on the days I was home. I'll try to post pictures of the final result. read more

The other four contractors kept telling me that certain parts of the job were going to be overly difficult and prohibitively expensive and priced out different, cheaper options. The folks at Stoneman came in, listened to what I wanted, and sent me a quote that beat everyone else's prices by a good margin. I was a little nervous that maybe they'd cut corners but I kept asking questions and they kept answering them to my satisfaction so I went with them. They finished my project in two days. They built a 35-foot privacy fence along the back of my property, a 12x12 cement patio in the backyard, laid sod down on a 35x35 area, and repaired a slate retaining wall that fell into disrepair several years after a local, reputable landscaping company put it up. They did fantastic job! Quality construction all around with no corners cut. There were also an incredibly professional organization. The other contractors were all late to come by for estimates, took a while to get quotes back, etc. Stoneman was at my house promptly at the time agreed upon, got me a quote within a couple of days, didn't complain when I asked for more time before I made a position, and had a team at my house less than two weeks after I signed the contract. We were so satisfied with Stoneman, that we used them again. And are considering using them for a 3rd project. We first asked them to put down a concrete driveway for us, with a pad near the garage, and 2 concrete strips closer to the street with gravel in the middle. Unlike other companies that came out, they measured the concrete strips based on the width between our vehicle tires, and size of our tires, which guided their recommendation for the strip widths.
