Barry seemed uninterested and did not have a pleasant attitude. Every time I opened my mouth to explain what type of fence I wanted, he shot down my idea and just kept saying it's expensive. My perception is that he didn't want my business or he assumed I couldn't afford it or he couldn't honor my request. I let him take measurements but honestly I don't know if he did because he was gone as soon as I came in the house. Perhaps the little rain scared him off. Barry later sent me photos of fences he's done rather than an estimate of what I requested. He wasted my time and his. I do not recommend this business. There's plenty of fence companies where you can get what you want without the hassle of discouraging you. read more

I recently moved into a new house and quickly needed a fence installed for my dogs. Barry and his team were great! I tried ordering an incredibly expensive vinyl fence (Illusions Fence) through Barry. He promised to come through, but for almost two months he failed to reply to emails or return calls. When I was told I'd get a call, no call would ever come. The few times he did pick up, it was more promises of "soon." Several times I requested an invoice or some sort of order number for my own records, which also went unanswered. I don't know why he would pass up the opportunity on such a big job. His lack of communication and unprofessionalism was incredibly frustrating. SUPERB work by a seasoned crew. On Monday, 7 FEB, I saw a neighbor had a new fence installed and so I called Mill-to-You Fences for a quote. Barry, the owner, said he would be in the area the next day (8 FEB) and offered to come out, which he did. After explaining that he is a local business-owner, and that they buy their material from Mills in Canada directly and finish the product locally, I was intrigued. When he told me he preferred to use cedar for the fencing, and wooden caps for the posts, I recognized that this was a company that took pride in the quality of their work and I was sold. He provided a competitive price to me that night that was only slightly (slightly!) higher than another quote I received that used standard treated pine lumber and I decided to proceed. On 14 FEB, I got a knock at my door from Barry's site lead, Delso who told me that they would be starting. From the initial quote, to design discussions, ordering materials and the build, Jay and Barry were great to work with and the fence was installed within a few weeks from first contact, with the actual build completed in one day. We have given Barry and his staff at Mill-To-You enough time to rectify the issues that emerged after their installation of our fence in October 2016. They have not done so after promising that they would on multiple occasions via text, phone, and in-person; therefore, we are posting our concerns online. We feel that Mill-To-You should only be considered as a last resort--and even then, one should be careful. Thus far our experience has convinced three of our neighbors to go with other companies. Mill-To-You built our fence in October 2016 and we paid nearly $4800 which from other quotes we got was around the average price for the job. After completion we noted to Barry that the front and back gates were built very poorly. The front gate was, and still is, wobbly and not supported. The back gate doesn't align properly, creating problems when we try to close it. When we told them about the problems, they promised to come out and fix the issues. After many phone calls they came out twice. Each time they came unannounced instead of scheduling a date as we had asked. The problems were never resolved as the issue returned within days each time. Unfortunately, the last time they came out they said they were missing a part to actually complete the work and left, never to be seen again after repeated phone calls. The gate issues persist. During installation, there were other issues as well. For example, we had chosen a photo from the Mill-To-You website of what we wanted the fence to look like; Barry's crew added aesthetic features that were not part of the design we provided. In retrospect we wish we would have pushed for a signed contract. At the time Barry seemed honest enough and we moved forward on a handshake. We would be willing adjust this negative review if Barry and his crew would come out and finally fix the problems - a courtesy phone call before their arrival to agree on the best time to come would be appreciated as well. read more

A very strange experience. When Mr. Potter took the job (to modify a fence), he wrote nothing down about the work I asked for. He insisted they had to start work that day, and I agreed on a handshake--no written estimate. (Never again!) I gave him a check for half, even though he hadn't asked me to, because it seemed like the right thing to do. The next morning Mr. Potter called at 7AM to tell me that he would not be at the job site because he had to go to a funeral and that I should supervise his workers. It became apparent, when I tried to get a breakfast order from the workers (my treat) that they spoke zero English. The job went badly from there. With Mr. Potter unavailable, I called Mill To You and spoke to someone who conveyed instructions to the workers in Spanish, but there were other problems that could not be fixed with the materials at hand. I tipped the workers $120 on an $885 job at the end of the day and figured I would work out the remaining problems with Mr. Potter. Then I wrote an email to him in which I offered to pay more if necessary to fix the problems with the fence. I never got a response to that email or an invoice for what I owed or a receipt for the half I paid. After a month of silence, Mr. Potter showed up at my house unannounced--angry, muttering, and demanding the other half of the payment. The first thing he said to me was "I wish I had never taken this job." He said he lost money on it, but I don't see how that is my fault, given that I paid what he asked me to, would have agreed to pay more up front (other estimates were $1800 higher), and offered to pay more to fix the fence his workers built. He refused to acknowledge that there were any problems with the work or his workers. He said that I should have supervised his workers more closely and that the language problem was mine. He was so angry, I shifted our conversation away from my porch and out to the sidewalk so that my neighbor's security camera would record anything that happened. I paid him the other half and asked for a receipt. He said he would email me one. I never received a receipt, though they did cash the checks! The fence has major problems, and because they used nails to attach the pickets, I can't fix it without destroying it. It's really depressing. I think this company uses quality materials and that they are capable of building a good fence. But, Mr. Potter expects his clients to be fluent in Spanish, to supervise his workers, to know carpentry, and to give him money he didn't ask for! Mr. Potter, if you're reading this: You need to write things down to create a shared understanding of the work to be performed. You underbid the job. I would have paid $2000 more if you had just asked. read more

Our review would've been five stars but things ended on a sour note. We hired Mill-To-You to build a wooden fence for our backyard. The whole process was smooth, the price was fair and the fence looks great. All was good up until we started having issues with the keypad lock that was put in place. It took several installation visits that lasted multiple hours for them to put one in place. We then started having issues with it not working every couple of months. They came out to fix it a few times at no cost, which was appreciated. However, when it broke again after just a few months, Barry initially responded to our email and then completely ghosted on us. We called their office multiple times and left messages with the person who answers the phone but they literally just stopped responding to our calls and emails. I understand that at that point, this level of expertise regarding the lock may have been outside of the scope of work they do. I would've completely understood if they called back and said, Hey, we've tried our best but we can't figure out how to make this work, we recommend you call X,Y,Z. They would've gotten a five star review from us if that had happened. However, that is not what happened. I think it's completely unacceptable to ignore a customer that has just paid you a lot of money. Watch out for them... read more

Working with Barry was an absolute nightmare. It started off fine, but by the end of the experience, we realized how careless and disrespectful he is. We hired him to build a new fence in our backyard. He was significantly more expensive than some of the other quotes we received, but he seemed knowledgeable and reassured us that his work was top notch. We specifically requested two gates (front and back) with locks. He agreed and charged us extra. When the work was done, the gates simply didn't work. The internal pieces in the lock mechanism weren't aligned, so the gates wouldn't close or lock. We could manually move the gate into a "closed" position, but a light breeze would swing the door back open. The whole reason for building the fence was to keep our dog from escaping the backyard. Without a gate that actually closed, it was useless. I then spent 10 weeks calling Barry again and again and again, asking him to come out and fix it. "Okay, I'll be there Monday," he' say. By Friday, there would be no sign of him. I can't tell you how many times he no-showed. Eventually, he came out on two different occasions, fiddled with the locks, and told me they were fixed. When I later checked, the gates still didn't close or lock. My biggest mistake was paying him before fully inspecting every inch of the fence. It only took him a day to cash our check, but after 10 weeks of begging him to come out and finish the job, we gave up. Bottom line: he acted like a total *******. We now need to pay someone else to finish his overpriced work. Do NOT believe this guy if he says we asked for "changes". The only "change" we asked for is for him to give us a working lock! read more

I was intitally impressed with Barry Potter's team's ability to remove the old fence and replace with cedar fence over a two day period. It was a pretty large job 400 square feet. The work does not merit a higher rating based on customer service followup. I asked for formal invoice and never given one. I had 3 gates put in. The latch hardware was of inferior quality to what I had on my prior gates. One of the latches was put in and now does not catch. I contacted Barry about this and he has yet to correct. Only time will tell, but I am now nervous about the quality of the cedar that was used for this fencing. read more

I hired Mill-To-You to take down a set of double swing gates to my driveway and to construct a smaller cedar single gate to provide privacy to my patio and back door from the driveway parking pad. Barry and his team could not have provided better service. I had a firm price within a couple of days and it even included a separate price for reversing the swing on the double gates to make them safer and more usable if I wanted to keep them, instead of tearing them down. I chose to remove them and have the smaller cedar gate built. They accommodated my timeline for completing the work and sent a skilled crew that finished building the gate on site and left the yard impeccable. When I asked him to do some extra removal of the old fencing - it was done within 48 hours! I couldn't be happier. I should say that his was the best of the prices I received from other reputable fence companies. I would use them again in an instant. read more

Mill-To-You did a great job of tearing down our old fence and putting up a new one and would definitely recommend. I was appreciative and impressed by their ability to do all the work in about half a day (~100 ft down one side of our property). The quality seems to be great, it looks amazing, and I was also impressed with how much care the crew took with the yard. A hydrangea only inches from the fence survived and they definitely put in effort to clean up the dirt and minimize the impact of digging new holes. On top of that, the price was comically lower than quotes I received from other companies (I'm talking up to ~40%, and I ended up with cedar where the other quotes were for pressure treated pine). It wasn't the lowest quote, but I think factoring in for the better material it would have been at worst darn close. Relative to one of the prior reviews, the mention of inferior quality is very surprising based on my experience. The only thing remotely negative I'll say is that they do appear to be relatively informal (i.e., didn't get a written estimate), not sure if it was driven by the small size of my job though. There was a minor increase from the original quoted cost, but as mentioned above on price, I thought it was more than reasonable and am very happy. read more
