It was a colorful mini train with a driver in the engine trailing two train cars with two rows each, just big enough to fit a dozen small children. The kids went nuts for this train. There were too many of them to ride at once, but they took turns for the first few rides until some of them started to get bored and returned to the rest of the party. The remaining die-hards, including my son, kept the train full for the remainder of its contracted time. I think it was there for one hour, and my son was on board for more than 45 minutes. The parking lot was small, and the train had a tight route: two loops followed by a dizzying finale of mini-train donuts. The driver moved fast, swerving and accelerating to delight the children. They were all buckled in, with the driver checking himself before each departure, but it did feel a little bit dicey. I am not shocked that this Yelp page is mostly 5-star reviews, with a smattering of 1-stars due to child endangerment. (There appears to have been an incident in September 2017.) My boy and his friends had a blast, though, and no one was harmed by this hour of Trains on the Move. If you have little thrill seekers and moderate risk tolerance, your kids are guaranteed to love the speedy baby train.

Is this train ride worth $80 for a family of three? That's the question I kept asking myself during…read morethe trip. Most people probably expect a premium Christmas experience at that price. Instead, what you actually get is a one-hour train ride, a tiny carton of chocolate milk, a small candy cane from Santa that seemed like it had been sitting around for a while, and a cookie... except they had already run out by the time we got ours. There were enough people on the train that they were probably bringing in well over $1,200 for a single one-hour ride, yet two seats were covered with plastic bags because, I'm guessing, some kids couldn't hold their hot cocoa. Little details like that made it feel like corners were being cut. The train staff, however, were fantastic. The conductors were genuinely friendly and treated my daughter wonderfully. Santa was believable, warm, and exactly what you'd hope for. The kids also ended up singing Christmas songs together because none of the staff were really performers, but everyone did their best to keep the atmosphere festive. Here's the funny part: while I spent the whole ride mentally calculating whether we got our money's worth, my daughter couldn't have cared less. She absolutely loved it. To her, it was magical. In the end, that's what matters most to me. I still think the value for the money was pretty questionable--and, honestly, it felt like quite a racket--but seeing my daughter so happy made it hard to stay cynical. It's Christmas, after all, and that joy counts for something.

A lot of people didn't know that you could actually take public transportation from the desert to the city, including myself. Found out that from Union Station, the connection hub with Amtrak will take you to Fullerton where you connect with the Surfliner Shuttle Bus which will take you all the way to Palm Springs with stops at Morongo, Downtown Palm Springs, the PSP Airport and lastly Palm Desert and Indian Wells. This main hub is the center to the city. Besides the Amtrak that departs and connects here, you have all the metro lines. Everything kind of ends here and connects to each other. Start here and you can get to Long Beach with the blue line, Santa Monica with the gold line, North Hollywood with the red, Pasadena also with the Gold and even LAX. Everything connects to each other and Union Station would probably be the main and sometimes the last stop. It's a nice station with some food stalls. The lobby waiting area is quite nice with the full train station vibe. Just outside, you have downtown LA to one side, Chinatown to the other and literally across the street, the fame Olvera Street. Train tracks are quite well organized. Schedule tends to be good with schedules showing on the boards that's scattered throughout the station. It's a nice station if you haven't been. A cool place to check out.
